Because the adult dog is likely to be considerably larger than the puppy, it'll most likely be necessary for you to use a barrier to reduce the internal size of the crate. A wire grille or board will do just fine.
Alternatively, you can use a cheap crate (or even make one yourself) and replace it with a larger model as your puppy grows.
Using the crate for house training
Crate training works like this: your puppy is in that crate at all times unless she's sleeping, eating, outside with you going to the toilet, or being played with (active supervision.)

Crate training generally takes one to two months (depending on the breed of your dog and how much time you spend on the training process.) As the puppy grows older, you can begin to reduce the amount of time spent in the crate – but beware of doing this too soon!
Other crate training rules
- Your puppy probably won't be too happy to go in the crate the first couple of times she uses it. She wants to be outside, being showered with affection and attention, and hanging out with you (of course!) But it really is for her own good – in a surprisingly short time, she'll come to accept the crate as her own personal haven where she can go to relax and get a couple hours' uninterrupted sleep. It's important to persevere: do not respond to any whining or crying.
- The best place for the crate to be is the hub of the household: usually the den or the kitchen, anywhere where people tend to congregate. Just because she's in the crate doesn't mean she can't still feel like part of the household; it's important for her not to feel isolated or excluded.
- The crate should be a welcoming, inviting place for her to go. Lay a couple of thick blankets or towels on the floor, and place a few toys and a chew or two inside it as well. The door should be invitingly open at all times (unless she's in there, of course, in which case it should be securely shut.)

- Puppies' bladders and bowels are so small and weak that they have only a very small window of opportunity between knowing that they need to go, and having that need become an immediate reality. Because of this, it's imperative that you take her outside as soon as she wakes up (she'll let you know she needs to go out by pawing the door and whining), and within ten minutes of eating or playing.
- Behaviors that indicate she needs to go outside include sniffing the ground and circling. Again, because she's only little, she won't exhibit these warning signs for very long – so as soon as she starts, take her out straight away. Better an unnecessary trip to the yard than an unnecessary wet patch (or pile) on the carpet!
- The maximum amount of time that a puppy can be crated at one time is figured out using the following equation: her age in months, plus one. So, a three-month old puppy can be crated for a maximum of four hours. However, this is likely to be physically pretty uncomfortable for her (not to mention hard on her emotionally and psychologically: it's tough being cramped up with nothing to do), so you should really take her out at least once every two hours during the day. Being left untrained ISN'T it Of course you should not buy a ready-trained dog, you need to learn how to train a dog yourself (including the importance of helping your dog to love & respect you), and so the branches of the GSD Council of Australia hold training classes (for manners, for obedience competitors, for show competitors), and there are all-breeds training clubs if you don't have a GSD club within range.
First off, Australia has 5 types of GSD: ● Specialist show dogs, whose parents have passed a Breed Survey; usually those litters have a sire or 2 grandparents born outside Australia. ● DogSport dogs, whose parents have passed SchH, and usually have both parents born outside Australia. ● All-breeds show dogs, usually with a parent or grandparent that is an Australian Champion ● Obedience dogs , usually with parents having at least a CDX; the sire is likely to be an AOCh.
In all 4 cases, both parents possess ANKC registration, official hip & elbow certificates, and either posses a haemophilia negative certificate or come from Australian lines proven clear of haemophilia. Apart from parental registration, those requirements weren't the ANKC's idea - it was talked into them by the GSDCAustralia and the Australian club for Rottweilers. The ANKC was also talked into NOT registering any off-coloured GSD or Rottweiler. The result is that anyone who understands BIF-scores for hips & elbows can tell how safe or risky is the litter they are considering getting a pup from - ask a vet how much an operation to correct hip dysplasia or elbow dysplasia will cost you, and you will start to appreciate how much of a favour those clubs are doing people like you. Read about haemophilia and you will discover another favour you (and your future pet) have been done. In addition, the non-registration of off-colours means that pups from any of those litters will LOOK like a GSD, although a percentage might end up as long-coats
But, as I said, there is a FIFTH type: ● Crap from ignorant and/or greedy BYBs. The parents will have NO Breed Survey Classification, NO show certificates, NO training qualifications. They probably have NO hip or elbow or haemophilia certificates either, and so their pups cannot be registered. The "breeders" are probably no cleverer than you at looking at a pedigree and assessing whether it is relatively safe or relatively risky for various genetic problems, and they certainly cannot risk supplying you with a meaningful Guarantee. Although their pups might SEEM cheap, by the time you've paid the extra vet bills that tend to be required during the lifetime of dogs from such unproven ancestry you will probably have paid MORE than you would during the lifetime of a pup from a reputable breeder who supplies a meaningful printed & signed Guarantee stating what compensation will be provided should any of the genetic "unthinkables" manage to sneak past the testing & pedigree analysis done.
Dogs from all 5 sources can end up in rescue, but expect most to come from the 5th category.
Cost is totally individual. The Australian moderator of my chat group got her first GSD from a pet shop - which means poor breeding. She calls him ugly, but has trained him to be lovable as a dog, and there are lots of photos of him sleeping with the first baby. She got her second GSD "for free" by being vigilant & patient. It is a show bit.ch who had done ok BUT the breeder discovered that one of her parents was a producer of a serious genetic defect, and this breeder wasn't prepared to risk breeding from an almost-certain carrier of that recessive defect (a recessive doesn't affect the carrier, but it sure affects any individual that inherits a copy from both its sire and its dam). So the bit.ch went on condition that the breeder could reclaim her at any time during the trial period, and after the trial period she was to be neutered. The follow-up inspection some weeks later was fine; my moderator paid to have the bit.ch neutered.

Just asking, if your planning to pad train you pup, are crates/cages still needed? I'm planning to another dog in the future and just wanted to know. I live in Vancouver and as you might know, it has a very rainy reputation. No one really feels like taking the dog out when its muddy and wet...My other dog came litter box trained so I didnt have this problem. Many use the crates for potty training, then break it down and store it for and never use it again. They are pretty expensive right now costing $50 +.
IMHO pad training is not the best thing for your dog. they need exercise even in rainy environments. Just train the puppy to love the rain by giving him/her treats and playing with her/him in the rain. pads are really the lazy way out and are good for the human only, not the dog. I crate train and continue to leave the crate up as they love to go into it as their special place

It will help with desensitize your dog to approaching strange dogs. Using your own body language when under stress as a cue for your dog to remain calm. Find a trainer who is up on the latest in canine behavior. I like the trainers: Patricia McConnell, and also Brenda Aloff. Both are great with aggression. I go to their seminars and just love them. I have seen Brenda Aloff twice and will see her again next year with two other trainers here for 3 days. PetSmart trainers will be unable to help you.

House Training Puppies - Crate Training Is The Most Effective Method
When House Training Puppies, crate training is the quickest way to get the job done. It works so well because when crate training puppies, it's very simple to get a handle on your dog's eating and toilet schedule, while making it very clear to your puppy where the toilet area is.
Some people have a difficult time with crate training because they feel it is cruel, and your puppy may fuss a bit about being kept in the crate, and that's normal. However, dogs like having a den area, and this creates a safe area for your dog that he knows is his "home". Crate training works because a puppy is very resistant to messing up his own space, and will hold off on relieving himself until he can get to another location.

Keep track of the times each day your puppy drinks, eats and goes to the bathroom throughout the day. Potty times usually happen first thing in the morning, after vigorous play, about 30 minutes after eating, and just before bedtime. For very young puppies a few nighttime time trips might be needed if they cannot hold it all night long.
When you take your puppy out of the crate in the morning, take him right to his toilet area. Simply carry him straight there and set him down in the toilet area if he tends to get distracted or run off. You should just stand there for 10-15 or so minutes, simply watching and waiting. If he actually goes to the bathroom, immediately give your puppy lots of verbal praise and affection, and you can also give a treat. If he doesn't go, then take him back to his crate, and in about 20 minutes or so, try again. Just repeat this pattern until successful, and once your puppy does go, reward the good behavior with playtime. You want to teach your dog that he needs to take care of business first, then he gets playtime. This sets up good habits.
In the initial stages, crate training puppies takes a lot of time and focus. If done right, you should see improvements quickly. Your puppy will need frequent breaks playing throughout the day, but for the most part he should stay in the crate during the early stages of the training process.
Whenever your dog is out of his crate, keep your eyes on him at all times. If you catch him about to have an accident on the carpet, shout No! and whisk him up and take him immediately out to the right area. This can be messy and chaotic, but it is really the only chance you have to help him understand where to go.
When you are in the middle of house training puppies, you should understand that accidents will happen, just be prepared not to call attention to it. Quietly clean it up without letting your dog see. You'll want to use proper dog mess cleaning products that take care of the smell of urine. It will take time and patience for your puppy to learn proper potty habits, so be patient with him.

Dog obedience training builds a closer bond between you and your dog. The more training he gets from you; the more he gets to understand you and what you want from him. How often should the training go?
First, see to it that your dog is happy while training is going on. Hold it for short periods of time. The first key is to stop the training while he is still interested and not because he is already tired; that takes about 30 minutes for some dogs and shorter for others. You can repeat the lesson later. The second key is to work on training your dog only while you are feeling good. If you are tired and frustrated, it will not help him learn, believe it! Rather play with your dog.
A dog obedience school is always a great place but remember that the lessons there are for you to learn. It is a place for you to see experts in action and ask all the questions you want, and then teach your dog at home, through patient and consistent practice.

I've heard that they are the most humane training device, they just look so barbaric to me.
They work great on some dogs and are really much kinder for a puller than a chain collar.
I am not fond of haltis or gentle leaders as they really don't work very well for most dogs.
If you have a dog with 'issues' I would NOT go the treat training route (although I have with some dogs). Pack leaders DO NOT bribe their pack. That is the problem with the PP people, they think there is a one size fits all training method, and there is not, all dogs are individuals. And I would NOT go to Petsmart, the Petsmart 'trainers' (and I use this term loosely) I have watched are totally clueless and have no business trying to teach anybody to train their dog.

My 4 month old cat loves to meow and scratch at my bedroom door at night. I don't want her in the room at night beause she either runs around making noise or she will jump on my face. Is there anthing I can do to get her to stop meowing and scratching at the door in the middle of the night? Is there such thing as crate training cats?
Try getting her interactive toys (rings with ball in center, batter operated swinging toy, lazer display/show, lazer ball, etc) that you only turn on at night. Get something that grabs her attentions and gives her something to do. The more exsercise/play she does, the more exhausted she will become. And hopefully learn its fun to be outside your room!
Have you had her long? It's going to take her a little while to get use to your schedule if you haven't had her long. My cat still do things at night that drive me crazy, but theres not much I can do other then to ignore them.
Another thing you can do, if you feed kibble, is to get a little ball with a hole in one side. Its kinda like a kitty kong/treat ball. Hopefully she will learn to chase the ball to get the treats out, and this will also help keep her distracted.
Other then that, I am out of ideas. I don't think punishing her or scaring her is going to work. I don't think she would understand, and probably would associate being with you, playing, or trying to get your attention as a bad thing. Not really what I think you are trying to accomplish.
Crate Training Puppies – Discover the Easiest Training Solution!
Crate training puppies can be hard…You see, I have a couple of Lab puppies and they used to relieve themselves in the living room!
These puppies are unbelievable I tell you - like 10 minutes after a meal, they would set up their potty business in my living room right next to the carpet (for some reason they don't actually relieve on the carpet, thank God for that).
It didn't stop there!
They even relieve themselves after just 10 minutes of training and playing! You see, puppies' metabolisms are a lot faster than adult dogs thus they urinate more frequently. This is something that you should keep in mind while crate training puppies.
Okay! Now what sort of method did I use to crate train my chocolate Lab puppies?
Believe it or not, I crate trained my pups via clicker behavior training! To me it's the easiest training solution because:
(1) It's easy to implement. (2) High success rate.
Really, crate training puppies can be easily done with a clicker. Here are a few tips to boost your chances for success…
(1) First you have to set up a proper crate training schedule. I didn't bother to do this at first so that's why my pups kept stinking up my living room!
(2) Apart from establishing a proper crate and house training puppy schedule, it's also important that you do not place your puppy in the crate for extended periods of time. At night crate him for about 5 hours and during the day, only him in there for 2 hours at a time.
(3) Establish a ‘relief zone' for your pup and use the same room access each time you take him there. In the relief zone, keep repeating your potty command to him and when he does his business there, click the clicker and then deliver the treat.
Tip number 3 should be done repeatedly to ensure your puppy understands what you're trying to teach him. If he doesn't do his business in the relief zone after 10 to 15 minutes, just take him back to the crate.
Also be sure to click accurately when crate training puppies using clicker!
