Obedience Training Your Puppy
Has anyone used the training that Petsmart offers for dogs?
Just wondering if the puppy class is worth it... What did you pay for your class and do they do them at night or weekends? Did the class work for you and your puppy?
We're not getting our puppy till June, but I'm just doing research on the best way for obedience training that won't break the bank. A local trainer wants $85 a lesson... I think that is pretty high. Is it? Petsmart's classes are 8 weeks long, so 85x8=$680 with the local trainer... Petsmart's gotta be cheaper then that...
Thanks Terra, that makes sense!
I took my pup to it the puppy kindergarten and am now taking my second as well. When it comes to the puppy class they are perfectly fine. They teach the basics like sit, down, wait, stay and coming when called. I payed $110 for the 8 weeks and we go on sat. When it comes to moving up in obedience I would get a professional trainer though as Petsmart trainers really aren't. It's also great with socializing your pup as the classes normally have 5-8 pups in them. I think the puppy class is def. worth it with them but for the harder training go somewhere else :) Hope this helps.
Btw, I would NOT spend $700 on a puppy class. Show Obedience with a professional handler/trainer, yes.
ADD: No prob., as many thumbs down as I get.. puppy class is the foundation for the rest. If you get your puppy in a class where there are a lot of distractions it actually helps in the long run when you start them in that situation. If nothing else it will socialize your pup and get them used to a busy atmosphere :) which I find has been very helpful since I am just starting to show my 7 month old. Good luck with your pup! I am sure he/she will excel in whatever you choose :)

Obedience Schools
What is the best method for training a very stubborn dog? I am about to go to obedience school for us both!?
This dog is a Welsh Corgi and also has separation anxiety.
Food. Dogs are prey animals, and are motivated by food and praise. A second dog would ease the separation issue, as well as more exercise. The more you walk and play with your dog, the more he will want to just lay by your feet. We have labs. They bounce off the walls until they are 8 months old then settle into a pattern of walk, play then sleep.

Kennel Train Dog
What's the easiest way to kennel train a dog?
Our new dog seems to be claustrophobic. We got her from a shelter, so she's not a puppy. My mom says if we can't get her to use her kennel in a week and a half, we won't be able to keep her. Can any of you help me?
We tried putting her food in it tonight, but our other dog, who loves her kennel and LOVES food, pushed past her and got in the kennel to eat the food first. We are going to buy her a kennel of her own, but my mom wants to make sure she'll use it first...
Lock the other dog in a room! Encourage your newer dog to go into the kennel to lay down for naps, but leave the door open. I put a Kong filled with peanut butter and treats to get her to go into the kennel. You have to show tough love if she cries...don't go running back and comfort her. Put her in and walk away. Maybe turn on the radio so she isn't afraid of every little noise she hears.

Cat Clicker Training
How to train a cat to not bite?
We adopted a 5 year old, de-clawed cat from a shelter. He doesn't hiss, but he bites. I will be playing with him, and he will hug my arm with both paws, then bite my hand, hard. He does this a lot. I have tried tapping him on the nose, and making a startled noise. Sometimes he is the sweetest kitty, purring and loving to be petted. Other times, his ears go back, and he starts biting.
I have successfully clicker trained a dog. I'm wondering if this would be a good method to train a cat. Entice him to bite, then when he doesn't bite, click and give him a treat?
The great thing about cats is that they are independent and hunters much like lions and tigers. The best training I have found is to withdraw all attention when they bite. They will come back for the attention. Cats know their parameters and they appreciate love and respect. I had a great cat for 20 years. She slept on my back when I was trimming the garden area on my hands and knees. She knew where I drew the lines and we had mutual respect for one another. Unfortunately my reward was a dead bird or mouse on my back door step. Have fun with your cat.

how to paper and house train puppy?
I am going to get a new puupy in about 2 weeks. But I dont know how to paper and house train the dog at the same time. And I know how to house break a puppy already. I just need help with both!
Don't.
Pads and Papers don't work. Get a crate and housebreak the dog properly to go outside. Cleaning up poop and piss on the floor for any size dog really sucks.

Potty Training A Dog
How To Potty Train Your Dog - Word Association Method
It is important to potty train your dog for not giving way to their nature’s call anywhere and anytime. Otherwise it will cause you a lot of embarrassment and trouble. Are there any effective ways on how to potty train your dog?
You may think that it is difficult to train puppies and older dogs to take your command to go to the bathroom. Most dogs can pay attention to repeated words, and they are able to associate the words to what you want them to do. For example, if you continue to say "go potty" when your dog is out there relieving itself, it will remember your word.
The best method on how to potty train your dog is by word association. You can make your dog associates the command "go potty" with relieving itself if you do this repeatedly over a period of time. If your dog relieves inside the house, you can say, "No, go outside," then bring your dog outdoors. Over a while, your dog will associate this command with something they should not do inside the house but outside.
In most guidebooks on "how to potty train your dog", it will never mention that you need to spank your dog while you’re doing word association training. Through repeated word command, your dog will link the word ‘no’ with bad conduct, and it will learn to go outside the house.
One important thing you must do is to bring your dog outside the house and tell your dog to go potty. You have to leave it outside the house until it has done with its business. Continue with this instruction to "go potty" until your dog finally does. You should credit your dog by praising it with a little treat for doing a great job. The dog will associate this command with what you want it to do so it can get a treat. After a while, your dog will learn that ‘go potty’ outside the house will make you happy.
You should pick a specific location for your dog to relieve itself as the dog will also associate this location with the command of "go potty". Be very precise and clear on your command when you train your dog on word association. Always be consistent. Do not use different command phrases to mean the same thing as your dog will not understand this and will become confused.

MAKE THE PUPS KNOW WHO'S IN CHARGE
However, they can be your worst enemy sometimes.
HUNTING THE RIGHT HOUND
But despite what those who breed and sell crossbreeds might try to tell you, these are not, nor will they likely ever be, recognized as purebred dogs. Sporting dogs that are alert, active and intelligent have historically been used by hunters to locate, flush or retrieve game from land or water. That's part of the fun. Its name origins from the Latin terra, meaning "for earth", most terriers were originally bred to "go to ground" after burrowing vermin, larger rodents and even foxes. Children and dogs make potentially blissful partners, but choosing a dog that actually likes to play with children is your best bet in orchestrating a match made in heaven. Scent hounds such as bloodhounds, beagles and foxhounds have historically aided hunters by following the scent trails left by their quarry. The national symbol of England, known for its strength and determination, it has been out of work since bull-baiting went out of fashion in the late 19th century. This is the list of dog Herding Breeds according to The American Kennel Club:Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Bearded Collie, Beauceron, Belgian Malinois, Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Tervuren, Border Collie, Bouvier des Flandres Briard, Canaan Dog, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Collie, German Shepherd Dog, Old, English Sheepdog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Polish Lowland Sheepdog, Puli, Shetland Sheepdog, Swedish Vallhund. Without the right training, some working dogs can be difficult to handle, even dangerous. Belonging to this group are some of the intelligent dog breeds which includes the admired German shepherd dog, most famous for its police work and the Border collies, the most intelligent of all breeds. Both routinely in the top five breeds, the Labrador retriever and the golden retriever together account for nearly one-quarter of the more than 1 million dogs registered with the AKC every year. A pampered, yet surprisingly active companion today, it once was a skilled truffle hunter. Consequently, these owners should also give them "work" that rewards their instincts. Like most terriers, this "king of terriers" has little time for other dogs, and if not properly supervised may engage in some street brawling. Even the famous racer, the greyhound, has proved to be a well-liked family pet.
THE ANATOMY OF A CANINE
In addition, when dogs of similar stature meet up, one often bumps the other with the rear of its torso to get a feel for its potential rival's body mass. A lot of information can be garnered from a quick sniff. The lolling tongue increases the surface area where evaporation can take place. You might as well read the information about it. Special taste receptors on their tongues are believed to allow canids to recognize chemical composition variancessuch as salt and impuritiesin different water sources. Like all mammals, the canid family is able to control body temperature through various physical functions. The long hair of the Lhasa apso is due to a naturally prolonged growth phase that was emphasized by selective breeding for thermal protection and aesthetic reasons. A small stopper pad, located higher up on the back of the leg, provides a better grip for walking or running on slick surfaces. Most mammals sweat to keep cool. Button Ears. Most hound dogs feature hanging or pendant ears, while many terriers have semi-erect button ears in which the tips fold over and hang in a V-shape, partially covering the opening.

House Train Dog
How To House Train A Dog – What To Take Note When House Training Your Dog
Dogs are really cute and even your kids would agree to the idea in having one as a pet. However, training and taking care of these dogs are not as easy as they look. Training them is important so they would not turn out to be a hassle in the household.
Learning how to house train your dog will take time and patience and it is best you start training your dog at a very young age. This is because like humans, as they grow older, it becomes difficult to get rid of old habits.
To start your training task, you should study them very well. Know what will keep them motivated and what makes them follow. If this task is accomplished, then you can now begin your dog’s house training.
Dogs are fun to train especially if they are still young. The very first lesson you should teach is the basic obedience. One of the most effective motivational tricks you can adapt is giving them snacks.
Other dogs go for toys and games. Rewarding them after they have properly done your orders will push them forward to do it more often. You need to give proper instruction and not give the dog snacks unless they have done what you requested such as sit, come and stay. Do not give contradicting commands by giving them snacks even when they have not accomplished their orders.
Of course, when you want your dog to have proper behavior, you need to allot enough of your time in making them follow your orders. The ideal time is two times per day at 15-20 minutes. This is perfect for your pet so they won’t be bored.
Before house training a dog, put a collar and a leash so you can always hold the dog near you. The very first training exercise is the “come, sit and down.” This may not be as easy as it looks as you can sometimes have a difficult time in making your dog follow.
Thankfully, there are many dog training books on the market that you can pick up to learn how to house train your dogs successfully.

Train My Dog
How to train dog to pee on pee pad?
I have a 7 year old pom who is trained to pee outside but i now live in an apartment and i have to leave her in my room when im at work because she barks to much and she pees on the carpet.. how can i train her to pee on a peemat or to wait for me to get home?
I just have to wonder that if your dog was already potty trained, then why are you having issues with the dog now. It sounds as if the dog wasnt trained enough in the first place. I would suggest not to train her to pee on the pee pad unless she is too elderly to hold her pee which doesnt sound like the case as most dogs will confuse this with being able to pee in the house period. If she is able to hold it without any medical restrictions then you should skip the pad and train her to pee outside. First she should be put on a strict schedule. Whether training puppy or dog, start by using this schedule.
As soon as you wake in the morning, be sure to take the dog straight outside to the where you want her to relieve herself. Being the morning, she should go quickly. Lavish her with a lot of praise to make her know that she did a good job. Then inside it is to go eat. As soon as she is finished eating, outside again to relieve herself. Be sure to stay there until she relieves herself or she will get confused and think that she doesnt have to go. Again lavish her with a lot of praise. Seeing you work during the day, you may want to invest in a crate rather than let her wander in a whole room. This usually helps a dog to not urinate while you are away.Be sure that the crate is large enough for the dog to stand and comfortably turn around in. If you get one too big, then it will not work and she may relieve herself in the crate. Ask a pet associate to help you if unsure of what size to buy. Also you should watch her water intake as she is a small breed and small breeds have small bladders and once this fills, small dogs have a tendency to be harder to house break due to this. Remember her bladder is usually smaller than her bowl so dont let her overfill with water and water and food should also be taken up at 6 pm and no later to prevent nighttime accidents. Once you get home, straight out to the potty place again and again lavish praise on her. Then after that it should be every hour she should be taken out until you can figure out how long she can go comfortably without peeing. The less accidents in the house the better obviously. So watch for those signs such as sniffing excessively, pawing, circling, and hind end low while walking. And always clean up spots as soon as they happen and be sure to use a cleaner that will get rid of the odor so the dog can not smell it at all as to not be confused. Be strict about this schedule and soon your dog should be all set, but i would also suggest taking her to the vet to be sure there isnt a medical problem underlying also. Good luck

Obedience School Dogs
Advice - Dog Obedience School?
HELP!! I have a neighbor with a big dog that barks not stop from 4am - 8am. The bark is loud and no one in a 1000 vicinity of her property can sleep. The owner doesn't care. She is well aware of the problem but says she can't do anything - it is a dog and dogs bark. I want to suggest that she send the dog to training school (not that she will but I want to at least suggest it). Where and how do I go about finding a school or trainer who can teach this animal to be quiet in the morning? Is such training possible? Should I look in the phone book? Any info will help. The neighbors all hate the dog but it is not the animals fault. I am afraid someone will eventually hurt it. HELP.
We have already called the town and she has been cited several times. The town has strict noise ordinances but she just pays the ticket. She is loaded so she doesn't care about the money.
Oh, how annoying! However it is not your responsibility to locate a trainer for this rude, selfish neighbor. And if she won't doesn't care about how you all feel, why would she go to the bother of having the dog trained? It is not clear by your post if anyone has actually spoken to her personally. That should be your first option. Speak with your neighbors and make sure they are behind you on this, approach her and ask her if there is any way she can control this problem. Try to be nice about it. But if she is rude or non compliant then please continue to call the police/animal control. Let her rack up tickets. There is a point at which the amount of tickets will allow the municipality to deem this poor dog a nuisance and perhaps threaten to confiscate. Maybe she will do something then! And if not, maybe the dog will be rehomed from the shelter to someone who will work with it and produce a well mannered pet.
There is a website you can access called DECC. They tell you about the federal noise ordinances and what you can do. They offer mediation and claim a high success rate. They also say that if mediation is not successful you do have the option to sue in court. Maybe if she is faced with more than a ticket, she might change her behavior!
If I were you, I would speak to the other neighbors and get them on record as regarding this noise as a violation of code. I would tape the noise and document the time of day, length of noise. Keep track with animal control of the number of times they are called, the number of tickets she receives. Please don't hesitate to call the police at 4 am if the dog has been barking for more than 15 minutes...in most ordinances they are not allowed over that limit. If you call the police, show them the tape and have them ticket at 4 am. That will surely get her attention!
I wish more people would be responsible pet owners and train their precious pets to be well behaved.
I wish someone would confiscate my 20 something weekend partyhound next door neighbors for excessive noise. I would be happy to keep their dog!
Good luck.

Train Puppy Biting
How to Stop Dachsund Puppy Biting
Dachshunds are an old German dog breed, bred to pursue badgers. They needed to be able to work alone, be brave and intelligent so they could chase down and kill their prey. These characteristics can still be seen today in Dachshunds, showing themselves in behaviors including barking and biting. They can rapidly become problematic if Dachshunds are not well taught as puppies. The first time you see any sort of dominance or aggression in your Dachshund puppy, especially biting, must take action.
Often owners will express amusement at their Dachshund puppy biting them, thinking it is amusing or endearing. What they don't realize is that these small nips are shows of dominance that can grow to outright aggression later on in life. The final consequence is that dogs end up being taken to a shelter or, even worse, being put to sleep.
Start Young
Before you adopt a Dachshund puppy go and look at a few litters. Note how the puppies play and test out behaviors with, and get feedback from, each other. With puppy biting watch how if one puppy nips another, the one who was nipped will most likely bite back. This lets the first puppy know that biting is not acceptable and, after a few repetitions, the behavior stops and the puppy understands not to bite.
After you bring your Dachshund puppy home you have to be constant and not let the biting restart. The initial occasion you notice your Dachshund puppy biting you must take action and begin training. In young puppies the biting you glimpse is still play biting, testing out behaviors to glimpse which are reasonable and which are not. Never hit any Dachshund, especially not a young puppy. They are still in their socialization and learning stage and will not recognize what has happened. Striking Dachshund puppies will just startle them and might result in further behavioral issues later in life.
The best technique to stop Dachshund puppy biting is to provide unambiguous, straightforward guidance and be consistent. Use positive training techniques. Reward progress and behaviors you desire, and be certain that everybody involved with your Dachshund is on the same page and not providing mixed messages. Think about your daily interactions with your Dachshund puppy. If you have an issue with Dachshund puppy biting then you may want to stop any games of tug. Dachshunds still have a hunting urge and can be rather ferocious when grabbing and pulling on a tug toy.
Stopping a Dachsund Puppy from Biting
When your Dachshund puppy nips you is your first thought to hit them? If so, think again, this is not the right action to take. The best thing to do is to demonstrate to them biting is not all right. Say "No" in a firm tone, or make a loud yelp (this is an effective way to interrupt biting as it mimics the sound that another puppy would make when bitten). Give them one of their own toys to play with, praising them when they start to chew it.
If you are consistent with this approach you will soon observe that your Dachshund puppy stops biting you, only chewing on their toys. You can use this method with any dog of any age, however it may take longer before you see results if your Dachsund is older.
If your Dachsund is more aggressive than just giving the odd nip or gentle bite you have to go to puppy or dog training classes or get the advice of a veterinary behaviorist. Training programs offer an environment where your Dachshund can be well socialized with new dogs and people, and where your Dachshund puppy biting problem can be addressed by a professional. As a responsible Dachshund owner you need to provide for the physical and mental wellbeing of your Dachsund. This involves training them and addressing any problems that arise before they become severe.
About the Author
Working on issues such as Dachshund puppy biting as they evolve will develop the bond you have with your Dachshund as well as reducing the chance of more significant issues later in life.

Kitten House Training
Litter training a kitten that is new to my house?
Im getting a kitten who has been litter trained by the breader, however when she comes to my home the litter will be in a different place and will be a different litter box. How do i teach her where it now is so she can start using it as soon as she gets here.
The breeder is providing me with some of her soiled litter so hopefully that will help. Shall i put her in the box straight away?
Thanks
The first thing you should do when you get the kitten is put it directly into the litter box. Let it find its way around from there.

Adult Dog Training
Dog Training Equipment for House Training
One of the most well-known forms of training dogs for proper behavior and obedience is the leash and collar training. In fact, this practice has been going around for years and is almost considered traditional by trainers and owners alike.
Generally speaking, it is best to train puppies more than the adult dogs as they already have a background of experiences and established foundation of behavior, along side it are the disagreeable dog behavior problems. However, it is not true that you can't teach old dog new tricks. If you are to use dog training equipment such as the clicker, you have to condition the mind of the dog to responding to it. You can use a method called operant conditioning whereas the idea is to associate a thing with the dog training equipment, for example treats in the form of food. See to it that every time the dog follows the command imposed by the dog training equipment, he perceives it as corresponding with a command with a reward. Also, it is important to associate your dog's name with something positive. Again, this may be in form of a reward or a treat. To fully get his attentions to the dog training equipment, get him used to hearing the clicks following his name, afterwards the treat. This process with of the dog training equipment won't take much time, but can be very substantial and constructive in the end.
