Last year we bought an American Bulldog puppy I tried so hard to teach him how to use the potty out side i would walk him every morning mid day and evening bu he never go potty out side every day after his walk he would go potty on a corner by the tv i could never break him from doing this so i clean the corner with clorox and put a small chair there to stop him from going potty on that corner but then he just found some were else to go potty, my husband eventually got tired of the dog pottying in the house he asked me to put him in the back yard were he has been sense now he is a year old and full grown now with winter coming i wanted to bringing back inside but im afraid he will not go potty i wont be able to train him to go potty outside because he is older now

Dog Potty Training: For the older dog that needs to potty train, first you have to know why this is, is there an underlining medical reason? In this case have things checked out by your veterinarian before proceeding. Is it that she has not had an in-door home before? Whatever the reason may be training your dog is not that different to training a puppy to use a potty. The differences that stand out are the quantities of waste and fluid. Having a crate can be of benefit for your dog as they hate to lie in waste or urine. Therefore the crate method of house training may be needed for younger dogs. This means that the dog will be confined to the crate during the times that you are unable to watch them closely to ensure that they don't have an accident in the house. However, if you find that once you have taken your dog out of the crate and they are having accidents once again, this means that you need to use the crate method for a longer period of time. The key to the crate method is that the crate should not be used a punishment. You should make the dog aware of that fact and find another of punishing the dog for any inappropriate behavior. The crate is a place to sleep, much like a den and should be treated as such.

If you have adopted an older dog and you discover that this dog has not be properly housetrained you can still use the create method. How do I go about training our new family member and correcting their "accidents" and bad behaviors? Do I have to crate train them as well? It seems like everyone is these days but the one dog i previously owned, didnt need one and id like to keep it that way.

With potty training you want to take the pup out side on a leash, even if you have a fenced in yard have lots of treats on hand, once pup is out side he will be wanting to play but don't let him sniff around and when he finally goes potty heavily praise him for it "good boy" real uppity and cheerful then give him a treat and let him off the leash to play. then in about 2 hours take him out again and repet the whole thing except when you go to take him out say let's go potty and take him to the exact same spot he did his business. he will go, repeat the praising and treats and let of leash once again to play, puppies love praise and rewards, their minds do not comprehend fully till they are about 4 months old but if you start early so will they. This has worked on all 5 of my dogs so Good Luck.
Crate Training is good for them but is NOT neccesary, if you want to crate train you can but you don't have too. Puppies that are crate trained tend to be really excited when out. If you crate train do not put puppy in there for bad behavior because this will only make him dislike the crate. Put him in there at night to go to sleep with a little blanket or a flat doggy bed you don't want the cage to be huge or too small, if the cage is too big then puppy will more than likely potty in it, You want the puppy to have enough room to be able to turn around and stretch, but you don't want him too cramped up. Only 3 of my dogs are crate trained and I rarely ever use them. My babies sleep with me (even though I am supposed to be the leader in the pack) I know but I cant help but not to let them do it. I have no idea before that I could train a dog to pee or poop to a location or spot where I would want him to. I got myself a regular male breed shih tzu two years ago and I named him Bruno. Bruno was a very cute little pup when I bought him and without any hesitation brought him home and took good care of him like he's my own child. I used to clean Bruno's mess for couple of months because that's the way i pamper him, just like a baby. Until I can no longer stand the stench of his dirt. My house was like my dog's bathroom.


Until I decided to do a dog potty training on him. I read some articles about this on the net until I stumbled on a very effective method and which was also adviced by my friends. It's easy and very basic. Bruno has been unloading in almost all areas in my house. Usually dogs pee or poop wherever they smell a spot that has their own dirt on it. I did cleaned those spots and bought something from a petstore that woudl neutralize the smell so that Bruno won't unload to that area again. Now, everytime a dog eats or drink you should take him outside after 15-20 minutes because this is when they normally unload. So, I patienly took Bruno 15-20 minutes right after he's done with his meal. A good time to take him outside also is when he wakes up on his nap. I had Bruno's last meal at 7:00pm so that he won't urinate or poop during sleeping hours. For a month I did these basic steps and right now Bruno has been potty trained. A lot of times dogs drink to much and that is why they have accidents in the home. You dog needs to stay on a routine and it will help them know when it is time to go outside to the bathroom.


Approximately twenty to thirty minutes after your dog eats it will be ready to have a bowel movement. Again get in a routine and take your dog outside to go to the bathroom. Using this routine will prevent accidents in your home.


If you have a specific spot you want your dog to go to the bathroom in your yard just take your dog on a leash to that spot every time and praise them every time they go. That will become their spot all of the time.


One command you can use is "Go potty!" and they should go. If they do not go right away go back in your house. Do not play with your dog or get them excited at all. Then in fifteen minutes take them out again and see if they will go. Be sure and praise them when you get the results you wanted.

Dog toilet training is probably the most important training that you will ever do with your dog. Getting a puppy or an older dog housebroken will save masses in cleaning bills, effort and embarrassment. But it is important to remember it is also hard work.

A lot of puppies have weak bladders, through no fault of their own. They are often unaware they need to relieve themselves until moments before they do, so it takes time for them to build up the bladder control needed for proper toilet training.

To paper or not to paper?

One of the most common methods of toilet training dogs is to put down paper, or even cat litter boxes, for them to relieve themselves on. You start by training them to use that, inside the house, and then move it outside so they grasp that it is outside that they need to go.

A lot of experts feel this to be a flawed method. Why?

Dogs will always try to 'go' outside of where they live they only use their home if they have to (slightly different for puppies bought from pet shops that keep them in a cage). With the paper method you are teaching it to break it's nature, and then teaching it that what you taught it was wrong.

Better then to constantly be teaching it that outside the home is the place to do it. And that involves not using paper or cat litter.

That is not to say that using the paper method is always the wrong choice. If there are times that you are leaving your dog and puppy on it's own for any length of time (because you both work for example) then it is best that you do teach it to use the paper or tray when dog toilet training - That way the dog will always have somewhere to relieve itself when you are not in the house and it has to go.

How should I potty train my dog?

This is my first dog and we potty trained it when he was a puppy and he was fine. Now the dog for some reason goes potty anywhere in the backyard (before he would go to an area where we trained him to go). This is getting kind of annoying please tell me what I can do about it. So, basically according to me the dog should go potty in the original area.

My dogs always learn by watching another dog, who is already potty trained, go to the bathroom outside. Hope this works for you!!!

Can an adult already house trained dog be trained to go in one area?

If you were to adopt an adult dog that is already house trained, could you train it to go in an a specific area of the yard?

yes! Every time she needs to go out side, leash her and take her to the designated spot where you want her to do her business, try not to let her go anywhere else in the yard. Put a word to her designated spot.. "Go pee" and take her there. Praise her with pats, love and ocassionally a treat. She will get it..as long as Your consistant.

I can let my 3 dogs loose in the yard, and tell them "get over there" and they will all walk over to the correct spots and do their business. Of course it took time, but now I don't even have to step outside the door :).. and they we all rescued as young adults.

House Training Puppies - Crate Training Is The Most Effective Method

When House Training Puppies, crate training is the quickest way to get the job done.  It works so well because when crate training puppies, it's very simple to get a handle on your dog's eating and toilet schedule, while making it very clear to your puppy where the toilet area is.

Some people have a difficult time with crate training because they feel it is cruel, and your puppy may fuss a bit about being kept in the crate, and that's normal. However, dogs like having a den area, and this creates a safe area for your dog that he knows is his "home". Crate training works because a puppy is very resistant to messing up his own space, and will hold off on relieving himself until he can get to another location.

The crate should be large enough so your dog can get up, walk around in a small circle and lie down. As he gets bigger, you can upgrade to a large crate if needed. Dogs don't like to lie in their urine (who would??) so they hold off as long as they possibly can.

Keep track of the times each day your puppy drinks, eats and goes to the bathroom throughout the day. Then put together a toilet break schedule based on the times of day your puppy might need to go potty. Potty times usually happen first thing in the morning, after vigorous play, about 30 minutes after eating, and just before bedtime. For very young puppies a few nighttime time trips might be needed if they cannot hold it all night long.

When you take your puppy out of the crate in the morning, take him right to his toilet area. Simply carry him straight there and set him down in the toilet area if he tends to get distracted or run off. You should just stand there for 10-15 or so minutes, simply watching and waiting. If he actually goes to the bathroom, immediately give your puppy lots of verbal praise and affection, and you can also give a treat. If he doesn't go, then take him back to his crate, and in about 20 minutes or so, try again. Just repeat this pattern until successful, and once your puppy does go, reward the good behavior with playtime.  You want to teach your dog that he needs to take care of business first, then he gets playtime. This sets up good habits.

In the initial stages, crate training puppies takes a lot of time and focus. If done right, you should see improvements quickly. Your puppy will need frequent breaks playing throughout the day, but for the most part he should stay in the crate during the early stages of the training process.

Whenever your dog is out of his crate, keep your eyes on him at all times. If you catch him about to have an accident on the carpet, shout No! and whisk him up and take him immediately out to the right area. This can be messy and chaotic, but it is really the only chance you have to help him understand where to go.

When you are in the middle of house training puppies, you should understand that accidents will happen, just be prepared not to call attention to it. Quietly clean it up  without letting your dog see. You'll want to use proper dog mess cleaning products that take care of the smell of urine. It will take time and patience for your puppy to learn proper potty habits, so be patient with him.

When potty training a puppy, does it help to have them with a dog who is already house broken?

Will having a potty training puppy trainee together with a dog who is already house trained help them catch on quicker? How much time do you give your puppy outside when taken out to "potty" My puppy will sometimes start playing, so I just take her back in and try again a little later. Is this the right thing to do?

but here are some tips for you if your finding yourself having a hard time to potty train your puppy

The first rule is... Never let the puppy out of your site.

The second rule is... The first rule is impossible, so expect mistakes.

The third rule: Your puppy needs a separate small space of its own in which to eat and sleep, and a potty area separate from the designated “puppy space,” so that you can break the first rule when necessary.

The fourth rule: Start out having the puppy sleep, eat and play in his own area. Stay nearby at first until it is used to being in its space alone. Expect a few mistakes at first, but if the mistakes continue that may mean the sleeping and eating area are too large.

The fifth rule: Create a potty schedule so Puppy can get to the area in which you intend it to relieve itself for five to ten minutes at a time, as often as it needs to which at first will be every few hours. As the puppy poops and pees during the day, look for a pattern in the time of day. The length of time between poop or pee breaks will increase with your puppy’s age. At eight weeks old, Puppy may not be able to go more than four hours during the day or six hours at night without a potty break.

The sixth rule: You control your puppy’s playing, eating and drinking habits to help you manage the fifth rule more conveniently. You will notice there is a predictable amount of time between your puppy eating and/or drinking, and its need to poop and/or pee. Additionally, puppies almost always have to go potty after a vigorous play session. Again, the amount of time it takes for digestion to occur will usually increase as the puppy ages.

The seventh rule: Let your puppy know how unhappy you are when it goes in the wrong place. Make sure your reprimand is not over done, thus causing Puppy to be afraid, or underdone, causing pup to continue making mistakes. Most importantly, praise Puppy lavishly when it goes in the designated area. If Puppy still does not quite understand, put a “sample” of what you want him to do in his potty area. Never let him see you clean up his mistakes.

The eighth rule: Consider the location of designated potty area in relation to the distance between where you usually are and where the puppy’s area is located. You should not have to run a marathon between where you are, your puppy’s area, and your puppy’s potty area. The sleeping/eating area, and potty area, should not be so close that it conflict with the puppy’s natural instinct to go as far away as possible from where it sleeps, eats and plays to relieve himself. As much as possible, these two areas should generally be where they will remain for the life of the dog. Try to use the same “potty exit” whenever possible, not just any door.

The ninth rule: Begin to notice what the puppy “does” when it needs to go potty. When trying to teach puppy how to let you know when it needs to go out, it is often easiest to expand on the puppy’s natural signals. If your puppy gives no apparent signals, teach the puppy to run to you and to the door as a signal. You do this by running back and forth with puppy, from where you are at “potty time” to the door used as the “potty exit.” This signal will also serve to stimulate elimination upon arrival at the potty locale.

The tenth rule: As Puppy begins to understand your “bathroom etiquette” requirements, slowly begin to expand its sleeping, eating and playing space until all it has left is sleeping, eating and playing space, i.e. your entire house and yard, and ITS OWN, SEPARATE, POTTY AREA.

Stick to the rules without variation, except as instructed by a professional trainer. Do not assume that a friend who has raised a dog, or the pet store clerk, knows how to help you with your new puppy, or that you can combine multiple recipes for housebreaking and get the same end result. This method works--if followed exactly. Then you can focus on all the fun stuff--obedience training, agility courses, hikes, etc. Oh, and don’t forget to call the trainer about that garbage raiding habit, or that leash pulling issue. After all, if you follow the 10 EZ steps to the letter, you certainly will not need us for housebreaking.
