We just got a new 11 week old Rottweiler. I am not a dog person, and I don't know too much about training. Any tips would help. A specific question I have is: He likes to lick hands, and once and a while rubs his teeth on them. A little love nip I suppose. Should I stop that completely, or should I train him to keep it nice and not bite hard?? Im thinking if he keeps it nice, it will get him used to having hands in his mouth for when we need to pull out the rocks he chews on and brush his teeth. Advice?

That being said, a LOT of training is timing and reacting to what the dog is doing. The greatest book, or video in the world can't watch YOU and tell you that your timing is off, or wrong.
VERY basic training techniques can be gotten out of videos and books. If you have any sort of problem, they won't help you much.
Most dog clubs have puppy and beginner classes. Typically, they'll run $10.00/class. Usually you pay for ALL the classes at one time. Typically classes run 8-10 weeks.
I can teach you more in a couple of one hour classes than you can get out of a video, or a book in a few weeks.

What is the best way to train her not to go to the toilet indoors and how old should she be when I start to train her to sit, lay down etc...

After a dog has urinated or defecated in the house, obviously you will clean this up. Perhaps you think that you have got rid of the smell and your friends will possibly confirm this, however you dog will still be aware of a smell. Your dog thinks that your house is a bathroom; dogs have a much greater sense of smell than we have.
In the UK there is a washing powder to use in washing machines called Ariel get the BIOLOGICAL version and clean your carpets and your tiled floors with this. Put newspapers under the section of carpet that you have cleaned.
When you are sure that you have cleaned every part of the carpet that your dog has pooed or peed on, do the following.
Always pick your dog up and carry it into the yard/garden every time it wakes up, after it has been fed or had a drink. Hopefully you have a fenced yard, if not keep it on a lead. IF you dog urinates and when it is in full flow use a catch phrase I say “get one”, always use the same catch phrase when your dog obliges. Then praise profusely afterwards, let your dog sniff around the yard/garden and play with it. Use your catchphrase for the rest of your dog’s life and when it’s an adult it will pee on command.
When you are sitting watching TV. and your dog is in the room with you, keep it on a lead and if it moves pick it up and take it out. Your dog will be unable to control its bladder or bowels during the night, however if it has produced a pee in the garden try to use a sheet of newspaper to absorb some of this. Put this sheet of newspaper on top of several others and your dog will use this as a bathroom during the night.
Don’t give your dog the run of the house and confine it to a small room, hopefully with a tiled floor at night. Do not chastise him when you find pee or poo on the floor when you get up the following day.
It is very difficult to house train a puppy if it’s left alone for a long period of time, try to stay with it as much as possible and restrict your social life for a while. This will pay huge dividends and your puppy will feel more secure.
Other training can start ASAP and if you are gentle, kind and give your dog lots of praise your dog will enjoy training. Do take her to a training class.

How do you know when to start house training a puppy? That depends on the puppy. Usually at about eight weeks old, but a good way to tell is when they start sniffing the floor, indicating that they are searching for a spot to go. The moment you see this, you should put your puppy on a leash and take him out side to the spot where you want him to do his business. You should pay close attention to this if you don't, your puppy may have an accident in the house. When you start house training a puppy, you should give him a treat every time he goes to the bathroom in the correct spot. You should get in the habit of doing this so your puppy will know this is what you want him to do.
The first thing you should do is come up with a schedule for taking your dog out to the bathroom. you will need to do this several times a day, so watch your puppy for sighs of him sniffing the floor. Your puppy will usually need to go to the bathroom;
1 after he wakes up in the morning.
2 After being in his create for a period of time.
3 After he takes a nap.
4 about 5 - 10 minutes after you feed him.
5 before your puppy goes to sleep.
When you start house training a puppy, you should set a schedule for when your puppy will eat. Avoid letting him eat when ever he wants as this will make it much harder to predict when he has to go. write down when you feed your dog and when you take him out to go to the bathroom. keep this schedule and you will start to see results quickly. You should always remember that your puppy may have an accident in the house. If this happens, remember that this may happen, and the best thing to do is clean it up with a pet deodorizer, so that they wont smell it and try to go again.
Using the techniques above, you can start to house train a puppy in no time. It may take a week or two before you start seeing results, but if you are consistent with your training you can do it. It takes time and determination, but soon your puppy will be house trained and you can start teaching him new things.
