How can I train my Maltese 3 year dog to behave?

My little 9 pound Maltese is a very sweet lovable intelligent dog EXCEPT while walking her. She barks and jumps at every person or dog that walks by us. I have tried scolding her, straying her with bottle of water, and shacking coins in a can at her. Nothing works. We have friends that we visit that have dogs and she is fine with that. Also friends come over with their dogs, no problem. Please do not say stop walking her. Any suggestions?

Scolding her insecurities, etc is not the way to go. You need to learn the skills to know what to do and going to training classes will be your best bet. But you have to find the right trainer that deals with only positive reinforcement. I recommend getting a book by Emma Parsons, called Click to Calm (Healing the Aggressive Dog). It will help with desensitize your dog to approaching strange dogs. Using your own body language when under stress as a cue for your dog to remain calm. Find a trainer who is up on the latest in canine behavior. I like the trainers: Patricia McConnell, and also Brenda Aloff. Both are great with aggression. I go to their seminars and just love them. I have seen Brenda Aloff twice and will see her again next year with two other trainers here for 3 days. PetSmart trainers will be unable to help you.

The Australian Terrier is a small sized breed of dog of the terrier dog type. The breed was developed in Australia, although the ancestral types of dogs from which the breed descends were from Great Britain.

Appearance

The Australian Terrier is a small dog with short legs, weighing around approx. 6.5 kg (14 lbs) and standing about 25 cms (10 ins.) at the withers, with a medium length shaggy harsh double coat that is not normally trimmed. Fur is shorter on the muzzle, lower legs, and feet, and there is a ruff around the neck. The coat colours are shades of blue or red with a lighter coloured topknot, and with markings on face, ears, body and legs of a colour described in the breed standard as "tan, never sandy". The tail was traditionally docked. As with most pet dog breeds, all proportions and aspects of the body and head as well as colours and markings are extensively described in the breed standard.

History

The Australian Terrier is descended from the rough coated type terriers brought from Great Britain to Australia in the early 1800s. The ancestral types of all of these breeds were kept to eradicate mice and rats. The Australian Terrier shares ancestors with the Cairn Terrier, Shorthaired Skye Terrier, and the Dandie Dinmont Terrier; Yorkshire Terriers and Irish Terriers were also crossed into the dog during the breed's development.

Development of the breed began in Tasmania about 1820, and the dogs were at first called the Rough Coated Terrier. The breed was officially recognised with the founding of the first breed club in 1887, and the breed was recognised as the Australian Terrier in 1892. The Australian Terrier was shown at a dog show for the first time in 1903 in Melbourne, and was also shown in Great Britain about the same time. The Kennel Club (UK) recognised the breed in 1933. The American Kennel Club recognised the Australian Terrier in 1960, and the United Kennel Club (US) in 1969. It is now recognised by all of the major kennel clubs in the English speaking world, and also is listed by various minor kennel clubs and other clubs and registries.

When, where and starting time for Melbourne Cup 2009:

Melbourne Cup Day 2009 also called Melbourne Cup Derby takes place on November 3, 2009 at Flemington Race Course in Victoria Australia. Sponsored by Emirates, Cup Day will attract thousands of spectators who will be dressed up to the “Ts’ looking all fashionable and smart. Champagne will flow and canapés will be handed around, as millions of dollars in betting sweeps will change hands all around the nation.

Melbourne Cup Race Time:

Starting on the first Tuesday in November as always, the Emirate Melbourne Cup 2009 will commence at 3pm for the main race, the Cup. While the actual Melbourne Cup is the race of the moment, the day starts out with many smaller races and attendees can enjoy a great build-up to the main race – the Cup.
