I'm going to be attending school this coming January in Hutto TX to become a dog trainer. I'm wondering if there are any websites that have active message boards/forums dealing with the schools or students/graduates?

I've looked all over the net & still haven't found anything where current, future or past students attending any sort of dog trainer school, class, workshop can get together & converse & share stories, tips etc...

Does anyone know if a site like this exists?

I don't know of any specific boards relating to Triple Crown, but there are lots and lots of great trainer forums and boards out there.

I doubt you'll find anything that's specific to graduates of a particular program unless it's sponsored specifically by that program, just because it's such a niche audience. For example, I'd bet that Karen Pryor's Academy has a list but that it'd be restricted to people currently enrolled or graduated from the program. You could ask Triple Crown if they have any such list.

Additionally, there are lists for other membership organizations, for example Association of Pet Dog Trainers (APDT) has a list for their members. Dog trainers certified the CCPDT as Certified Pet Dog Trainers (CPDT) can join the CPDT list. Attendees of the Clicker Expo, a fabulous multi-day conference held a few times a year in various parts of the country, are invited to join the ClickerExpo group that extends discussion on topics from the conference.

So basically, these are just a few examples that I've personally taken part in so the kind of thing you're looking for is definitely out there, but it'll be easier to find them as you get more exposure.

As a budding trainer, I'd suggest a membership to APDT (Association of Pet Dog Trainers) where you can have access to their very active list as well as the quarterly (?) publication Chronicle of the Dog.

Firstly im in the UK and the1971 Animals act states that an owner is not legally responsible for a cats behaviour. secondly i will offer my neighbour my car cover (i also own a convertible but the cat doesnt claw mine or at least it doesnt show!). thirdly i have bought a pet alarm that the neighbour can stick on his roof which emits a siren when it detects movement.

Why Discipline Does Not Work

Yes, you read that right; disciplining your cat does not work. If this is what you have been doing, you will see that this statement is correct. Most people are under the notion that you need to catch the cat in the act so you can immediately reprimand that cat for doing wrong. This, in fact, is not correct.

When you choose to discipline your cat, you are only showing them two things. One, when you reach for them, it is a bad thing; and two, whatever you are showing them, whether it be the litter box or object, is bad. These are both concepts that will not make the situation better, but sometimes can make it worse. Moreover, when you catch your cat "in the act", you will see that he or she only misbehaves when you are not around. On the other hand, if you discipline your cat after the offense, they will not associate the incident with the punishment. Remember, cats do not speak English!

Get Your Cat Out of Bad Habits

Shedding more light on this concept; make sure you control the environment. If you are looking to litter train your cat, have them on a regular feeding schedule. By doing this, you will know about when they will need to relieve themselves. About ten to fifteen minutes before the scheduled time, take them to the litter box. Put it in a room where it is just you, them and the box. They will use the box, and when they do, praise them.

3. Make sure the experience is not a rewarding one. Everyone and every animal, including cats, as something they do not like. You need to find out what your cat does not like. For many cats, tape, netting, aluminum, and sometimes scents can deter them. Cats generally do not like sticky or noisy things. They also do not like getting their claws stuck onto items.

In general, the cat training basics listed above are a solid plan for success. They can be applied to any training you decide to go through with your cat. Always keep in mind to stick with the three steps!

Leash training or lead training is the discussion of many dog trainers in this modern age and discussions of how to train your dog in the nicest possible way are aplenty. These discussions are brought about by people and dog trainers believing that pulling on the leash to correct a dog’s behavior is causing injury to the dog.


I’m not here to discus this also, but I certainly don’t believe there is anything wrong with leash training if it is done in the correct way and care is taken not to hurt the dog or give any sudden forceful pulls on the leash.


Leash dog training is equally as popular as any other form of dog training within the expert dog training community because when done properly it gets results quickly and effectively.


Leash training is used by correcting your dog’s movements and gently tugging on the leash to force the dog to go in a way they would not have originally gone and to direct them in the favoured way for the training exercise in hand. Often the problems of leash training are with getting your dog comfortable with the leash and collar so I will briefly discus the key aspects of getting your dog to behave when going for walks on a leash and the problems you might face.


Some dogs are excited to get their collar on and other are not so fond of it, train your dog to sit and stay first before learning to take your dog on a leash, many dogs like to wriggle around and run about wile you try to put a collar or lead on them so the sit stay commands will be essential.


While doing any pre-leash exercises or walks if your dog misbehaves by being too excited you should simply remain calm and not go for walks until they are acting appropriately, this should calm your dog down and act as a light punishment for them.


When starting leash training, begin in your own home and then work your way up to more populated and new and interesting places, if your dog misbehaves or is pulling on the leash constantly when they are out then discipline accordingly, and as always practice will be the deciding factor to how quickly your dog will accomplish good behavior.

Hi! I personally wouldn't de-claw my cats just because if they ever got into a cat fight they wouldn't be able to defend for themselves, but I would get them a scratching post! They love them. For toilet training your cat I will give you some steps! Ready? First start by training yourself ...
The very most important thing to remember is: Lid Up, Seat Down. Post a note on the back of the door or the lid of the toilet if you think you (or your housemates or guests) might forget. (Nowadays, if I have a guest who leaves the lid down, Misha will usually come and ask me to fix it, but you can't expect every cat to go to this much trouble. Besides, he's been using the toilet for more than six years now; when the whole idea was new to him he'd just as soon pee in the bathtub instead.) And if you are accustomed to closing the bathroom door when it's empty, you'll have to break that habit too.

Begin by moving the cat's current litter box from wherever it is to one side of the toilet. Make sure he knows where it is and uses it. Rest. Next put something — a stack of newspapers, a phone book, a cardboard box — under the litter box to raise it, say, about an inch. (Magazines are too slick; you don't want the litter box sliding around and making Felix feel insecure. Tape the litter box down if you need to.) Rest. Get another box or phone book and raise it a little higher. Rest. Continue this process until the bottom of the litter box is level with the top of the toilet seat. (For Misha I raised it about two inches per day.)

At the beginning of this process, your cat could just step into the box; later he began jumping up into it, until at some point he probably started jumping up onto the toilet seat first and stepping into the box from there. You've been diligently keeping the lid up and the seat down, of course, so by now your cat is thoroughly familiar with tromping around on the open toilet.

Lift the seat on your toilet and measure the inside diameter of the top of the bowl at its widest point. Venture forth and buy a metal mixing bowl of that diameter. Do not (I discovered this the hard way) substitute a plastic bowl. A plastic bowl will not support the cat's weight and will bend, dropping into the toilet bowl and spilling litter everywhere, not to mention startling hell out of the cat.

Now you move the litter box over so that it's sitting directly over the toilet seat. (If your cat has shown reluctance over previous changes, you might want to split this into two stages, moving it halfway onto the seat and then fully over.) Take away the stack of phone books or whatever. Rest.

Here's the cool part. Take away the litter box entirely. (Ta da!) Nestle the metal mixing bowl inside the toilet bowl and lower the seat. Fill the bowl with about two inches of litter (all of this is much easier if you have the tiny granules of litter that can be scooped out and flushed).

Naturally, any humans using the toilet at this point will want to remove the metal bowl prior to their own use and replace it afterward. The next week or two the whole process is likely to be something of an annoyance; if you begin to think it's not worth it, just remember that you will never have to clean a litter box again.

Count the number of feet he gets up on the toilet seat (as opposed to down in the bowl of litter). The higher the number, the luckier you are and the easier your job is going to be ...

...because next you have to teach him proper squatting posture. Catch him beginning to use the toilet as much of the time as possible and show him where his feet are supposed to go. Just lift them right out of the bowl and place them on the seat (front legs in the middle, hind legs on the outside). If he starts out with three or, heaven forbid, all four feet in the bowl, just get the front two feet out first. Praise him all over the place every time he completes the activity in this position.

(Misha is very doglike in that he craves approval and praise. If your cat is indifferent to this sort of thing, you can also reward him with small food treats and wean him from them later when the toilet behavior has 'set.' Just keep the treats as small and infrequent as possible — half a Pounce or similar treat per occasion should be plenty.)

When he is regularly using the toilet with his front feet out (and some cats naturally start from this position), begin lifting a hind foot out and placing it on the seat outside the front paws. Felix will probably find this awkward at first and try to replace the foot in the litter. Be persistent. Move that foot four times in a row if you have to, until it stays there. Praise and/or treat.


Misha demonstrates proper squatting posture. Note the look of firm concentration.Repeat with the other hind foot, until your cat learns to balance in that squat. (There will actually be two different squats, a low one for urine elimination and a high one for bowel movements.) Once he's getting all four feet regularly on the seat, it's all downhill from here.

Which is fortunate, because the last bit is also the most unpleasant. I suggest that you postpone this stage until you have at least a weekend, and preferably several days, when you (or another responsible party) will be at home most of the time. I skipped through this part in about two days; I only hope that your cat allows you to move along that fast.

Begin reducing the litter in the bowl. Go as fast as he'll feel comfortable with, because as the litter decreases, the odor increases. You'll want to be home at this point so that you can praise him and dump out the contents of the bowl immediately after he's finished, to minimize both the smell and the possibility that your cat, in a confused attempt to minimize the smell on his own, tries to cover it up with litter that no longer exists and ends up tracking unpleasantness into the rest of the house.

By the time you're down to a token teaspoonful of litter in the bottom of the bowl, your next-door neighbors will probably be aware of the precise instant your cat has used the toilet. This is as bad as it gets. The next time you rinse out the metal bowl, put a little bit of water in the bottom. Increase the water level each time, just as you decreased the litter level. Remember — if at any point Felix looks nervous enough about the change to give the whole thing up and take his business to the corner behind the door, back up a step or two and try the thing again more slowly.

Once the water in the mixing bowl is a couple of inches deep and your cat is comfortable with the whole thing, you get to perform the last bit of magic. Take the mixing bowl away, leaving the bare toilet. (Lid Up, Seat Down.)

Voila! Your cat is now toilet-trained. ( Good luck and I am so sorry about how long it is! The person who typed it talked a lot*)

There are many kinds of service dogs trained to help humans with differing conditions and in differing situations.  Assistance dogs are put through many kinds of rigorous training before being placed in a home or a job.  Most service dogs are initially raised in foster homes, with human foster parents who work constantly with the puppies to get them ready for serious careers.  They start with the basics that all family puppies must learn:  puppy housebreaking, puppy crate training, and general puppy house training such as not chewing the furniture.  These skills are then built upon by trainers to teach the dogs more complex commands and behaviors.

The advanced skills that service dogs are taught depends greatly on the type of work they will do as adults.  Dogs bound for police work undergo agility training, and specialized training for the type of work they will do.  Beagles and Bloodhounds are often trained to sniff out narcotics and cadavers.  German Shepherds intended for police work usually undergo training in crowd control and suspect detainment.  Most all kinds of service dogs go through a large amount of socialization training.  This includes dealing with crowds and loud noises, as well as dealing with children and the elderly.  Social training is one very important aspect of service dog training that police dogs and assistance dogs both learn.

When most people hear the term "service dogs" they think of dogs that are trained as companion helpers to humans with disabilities.  Many movies have played up the abilities of service dogs and given the idea that they can do absolutely everything for a human, including changing their own potty pads or taking themselves for walks, or even cooking dinner.  While assistance dogs are intelligent, highly trained, and well skilled, they are still canines on four legs.  The purpose of a service dog is to help a person with disabilities handle daily activities more easily, and to provide a companion.  In many ways, simply being a constant companion is the best help a service dog can give.  Some service dogs' jobs are simply to stay with their humans all the time and get help in the event of persistent occurrences such as seizures.  In many ways, these dogs do not just perform helpful assistance, they literally save lives.

Many assistance dogs do help around the house by opening doors and drawers, or fetching specified objects on command.  This can be an enormous help for persons who use wheelchairs.  Still others enable visually impaired people to move more freely through the home and the outside world.  Some assistance dogs are now being trained to help doctors find cancer in humans by sniffing out the cancer cells.  The range of what canine companions are capable of is extensive, as are the number of organizations that help place assistance dogs with people who need them.  For people interested in fostering and training service dogs, becoming acquainted with the most local assistance dog services available is a good first step.  Most all of these organizations have different training programs for people and the dogs.  Just don't expect them to change their own potty pads; at least not without a bit of training.

Aggressive cats can be dangerous, so attempting to resolve a chronic cat aggression problem often requires assistance from a professional who is knowledgeable about cat behavior. Types of Aggression play motivated aggressive behaviors are commonly observed in young, active cats less than two years of age and who live in one-cat households. Most cat aggression problems stem from a traumatic experience that the cat has previously had. For example, perhaps as a kitten your cat was hurt by another person?

The environmental and behavior modification techniques will be the most effective when the causes of the problem can be determined. For example, after moving, providing a new secure territory including an area for elimination, food, and resting is most effective. If you notice anything strange about your cat, it could be a sign of unhappiness and stress, which could very well lead to aggressive behavior. Aggression, Anxiety, and Mental Health are three behaviors that are effectively treated by the natural and herbal remedies.

“Play behavior aggression” is considered a rehearsal of adult roles and is helpful, though not absolutely necessary, for kittens' future development. During the process of rough and tumble play, kittens exercise just about every sense and muscle in their bodies, helping to prepare the youngsters for the life that lies ahead.

If sudden introductions lead to aggression, this can set the stage for future battles and may not go well for the future. The way to circumvent this problem is to gradually introduce unfamiliar cats to each other across a closed door. Be very careful of picking up strays and feral, not only because of potential diseases (which you could spread to your other pets, if you have them) but to avoid future problems. It is sad, but a feral cat does best being feral, as long as it is safe. Try restoring cat friendships damaged in this way using the same techniques used for inter-cat aggression, reintroducing the cats to one another by mixing facial pheromones or using wire mesh pens. Redirected cat aggression by following two steps: 1. the strange cat must be kept out of the yard 2. Defensive, territorial, redirected and idiopathic (meaning the cause is unknown) forms of cat aggression can be quite serious and usually require professional help to resolve. You should never attempt to handle a fearful or aggressive cat.

A way to deal with Social Cat Aggression is to take control of all rewards. Teach your cat that an obedient behavior is the way to get the reward. Territorial cat aggression can be exhibited with addition on a new cat to the family, some change in the environment or an already established pecking order. If a new cat is to be added to the family, the introduction process should be gradual and may take 2-3 weeks. However, there are other causes of cat aggression and they include over excitement and illness.

 "Fear aggression,” is a defensive behavior towards unfamiliar people, animals, noises and even new places. Unpleasant experiences, like a trip to the veterinarian's office, may also trigger fear aggression in your cat. We hope that this will help you to understand why the behavior occurs, what you are dealing with, and how to correct it. In order to correct this behavior, you need to redirect your kitten's aggressive behavior onto acceptable objects. Drag a toy along the floor to encourage your kitten to pounce on it, or throw a toy away from your kitten to give her even more exercise by chasing the toys.

Training an older rescue dog to be off leash?

We adopted a 6 year old Bull Terrier in October and his listening skills while off leash are not great. He is awesome with other dogs and people, but not street wise. Our worry with allowing him off leash is that he will run into traffic or get lost. We have an off leash dog park that is mostly fenced in, but has an open entrance. Our goal is to allow him off leash and not worry that he will run for the exit. In the one time that we let him off leash, he ran until he got tired and then came back. During the winter, we took him to a fully enclosed baseball diamond and he listened very well.

This dog park is in a small town where there are rarely other dogs. I do not take him to the fully fenced one in the city as he has been attacked by other dogs. He goes for a minimum 45 minute to 1 hour walk daily, but he enjoys running as a reward.

My question is:
Are there any techniques that have worked for you while training a dog to be off leash?

I had the same problem, but my dog was a hard headed 3 year old.

I put her on a long rope and let her wander off. When she was about to hit the end of the rope, I'd call her back and when she did come back to me, I'd make a big fuss of it and give her a treat.

If you can do this well, move onto doing it without the rope.

If you keep practicing all the time, soon enough you will be able to call your dog back from anywhere.

As for the road, teach him to be aware of traffic. Make him sit whenever you get to a road and wait. If he runs onto the road, tell him off and make him sit next to you. He will learn that he is not allowed to cross a road without you.

I'm still trying to teach that one, it doesn't seem to be getting through her head.

Female horses, called mares, carry their young for approximately 11 months, and a young horse, called a foal, can stand and run shortly following birth. Most domesticated horses begin training under saddle or in harness between the ages of two and four. They reach full adult development by age five, and have an average lifespan of between 25 and 30 years.

Horse breeds are loosely divided into three categories based on general temperament: spirited "hot bloods" with speed and endurance; "cold bloods", such as draft horses and some ponies, suitable for slow, heavy work; and "warmbloods", developed from crosses between hot bloods and cold bloods, often focusing on creating breeds for specific riding purposes, particularly in Europe. Does Cesar Millan, the Dog Whisperer, Really Have it Right When it Comes to Dog Training?

I know it sounds crazy, but I love AND hate that Cesar Millan Dog Whisperer show.

It's fascinating to watch him re-shape dog's behavior, but it's really hard to understand his concepts and how to actually make the dog change his behavior.

I have trained dogs before, and I have watched Cesar's TV show and read his books.

He brings a lot of "intuitive energy" to dog training. He talks about doing "centering" exercises and meditation at home. He says it's important to have calm and positive thoughts in your mind when you are interacting with your dog. However, I think he falls short on a lot of communication to people in general, about how to get their dog to do what they want.

I have watched the show a dozen times or more, and I just don't have a solid grasp of how he would train a dog to do something simple, like Sit.

Maybe Cesar focuses more on rehabilitating dogs, not just training them. But for most of us, we need to learn solid dog training techniques that can get our dog to behave a little better at home. We're not trying to heal him from some traumatic past or redress other major problems. We just want the simple things - come when called, don't beg for food, stop barking, etc.

One thing that I do like about Cesar's dog training ideas is that he focuses on helping your dog get exercise and meet his other "breed" needs - like playing fetch, scent tracking, and so forth.

Truthfully, I think a lot of neurotic or anxious dog behavior can be traced to people just not having enough time to spend with their dogs to get them a good variety of routines in their day that are active (we Americans aren't very active, are we?).

For every person who jogs 3 miles with their dog after work, there are probably 10 others who just let the dog out into the back yard and hope he runs himself around.

Unless you have a dog breed that doesn't need much exercise, this can be a real problem.

However, all this and more is covered in the dog training manual I recommend. It is much more concrete and actionable than the "philosophies" that Cesar discusses in his books. I think Cesar's techniques are fascinating to watch, but not very duplicable for the average dog owner.

For a real easy-to-understand and implement dog training system, I think Cesar's approach is a little too murky.

What is my dogs behavior?

I have an australian shepherd. When he see's a dog he will perk up and be very tall and all the sudden he will get very low and walk slowly toward the dog and he is walking in a straight line walking towards the other dog. He looks straight at the dog and with no hesitation. He walks and looks at the dog as if he is concentrating on the dog. And remember he gets very low to the ground to wear his stomach is touching the ground.
What does this mean? I heard this could be herding instinct but not sure.

How To Stop Cat Spraying

You may have witnessed your cat lifting up its tail, intensely quivering its hindquarters and directing a stream of urine on to a surface. (Perhaps your new George III Polychrome decorated satinwood Pier tables?) What can you do about spraying…  a common problem faced by most cat owners?

Let’s first look at why a cat will engage in this behavior.
Cat urine has a strong odor because it contains that a fatty ingredient that allows it to cling to object and because of this, it has a particularly strong smell.   Spraying is a marking behavior used to tell other cats of their presence in that area.  The urine of un-neutered male cats is particularly pungent and unpleasant, but both male and female cats mark their territory by spraying.   Male cats spray more often due to their heightened testosterone-driven territorial agendas.

Stop Cat Spraying due to Illness
If all is well and your cat suddenly engaging in spraying behaviors, it is important that you take him or her to the veterinarian to rule out any medical problems.  A cat may suddenly begin to spray due to physical problems such as Feline Lower Urinary Tract Disease (FLUTD). A simple urine test performed by your vet can determine if your cat has FLUTD. Thankfully, this it is very treatable illness.

Stop Cat Spraying due to Stress
Again, if all is well and your cat suddenly starts to spray, you should ask yourself some lifestyle questions.  Have you and your cat moved recently or introduced a new human or animal member to your household?  If so, the stress of such changes may trigger spraying behaviors as a response.  Male cat spraying and female cat spraying can be triggered by stressful events.

How to stop cat spraying?
OK, now we know why our cat is spraying, but how do we get him or her to stop?  
Get Your Cat "fixed" to Stop Cat Spraying
The number one remedy for cat spraying is to get your cat spayed or neutered.   This immediately stops the problem in 78% of cases. 9% will stop in a few months. Unfortunately, 13% don't stop.

Medication to Stop Cat Spraying
If you are unlucky and your cat is among that 13%, there are other treatments. Your veterinarian may recommend you give your cat an anti-anxiety drug to curb the stress that may be causing spraying behaviors. Valium and Clomicalm are common prescriptions, as is Buspirone, a drug that has been used with success in spraying cases involving territorial stress due to competition between cats in the home.
You may want to consider this if the problem is persistent and you are at the end of your rope. The sad fact is that inappropriate urination problems and cat spraying and are among the most common reasons for pet cats to be surrendered to cat shelters and/or put to sleep.  It is better to have a medicated cat in a good home, than a non-medicated cat in a shelter cage.
Of course, medication options must be discussed with your veterinarian.

Natural Pheromone Sprays Stop Cat Spraying
Pheromones are part of a cat’s communication repertoire.   As spraying is a marking behavior, there is a new product on the market that according to the Humane Society of Wisconsin, has had much success in stopping cat spraying.
The product is called “Feliway” and it mimics a cat’s facial pheromone.
