Pet Training Devices

pet training devices
Are ultrasonic bark control systems safe for dogs? Will it cause hearing damage?

We recently purchased the PetSafe Ultrasonic Bark Control Pet Training System for $39.99 from Petsmart. Despite very negative reveiws on the web and Amazon about its effectiveness, we have noticed significant reduction in barking, especially overnight/mornings. We are quite happy about the results but also a bit concerned about our dogs. They are small breed 10-15lbs and we want to make sure they are not being tormented or overly punished for barking. Since we can't hear the device when it goes off, we have no way of knowing the magnitude of the "correction."

When I lived with my dad he had one of these it worked amazingly and it never seemed to bother my dogs when they barked they would stop and continue what they were doing. But it only made his yorkshire terrier bark more lol I was amused by this since she was the reason he bought it lol.

How To House Train A Dog

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]
how to house train a dog

How To House Train a Dog Fast

All new pet owners want to learn how to house train your dog fast. We love our pets dearly, however, we do not care to clean up after them nor do we want them destroying our belongings.

The key to successful training depends on how consistent and patient you are, and if you use praise and reward when your dog pleases you. Dogs are smarter than you think, and you will be surprised at how quickly your dog responds to praise.

The first thing you must do is put yourself in your dog's place. How do you feel when you have to go to the bathroom and can't? Most of us get anxious and fidgety. Your dog does the same thing, but instead of biting their nails like we might do, they get in destructive mode, and will go where ever they can.

There are two important factors that you must keep in mind. One is scheduling what your dog eats, how much and when. Remember with a dog, what goes in, must come out. The other thing you must do is to let your dog know that he can depend on you taking him out on a regular basis so he can relax and be himself. This will also cut down on chewing, because a dog will chew out of nervousness, and they get nervous when they have to go potty and can not.

When you learn how to house train a dog fast you will understand that it all starts with preventing a mistake. Your dog should not have free run of the house until you trust him not to go inside. Keeping him confined until he is house trained is by far the fastest way to train him.

You can confine your dog with either a crate or a tether. The key to either of these methods working is to not leave your dog confined for long periods at a time, and to never use confinement as a from of punishment. It is also never necessary to spank your dog while you are training him. This gives him mixed signals from you.

Another tip that works great, is to have a special toy for your dog, and only give that toy to him when you will be gone for awhile, this way he relates you being gone as a special treat for him.

If you do your part and remain consistent, and use praise and reward, you will be surprised at how fast you can house train your dog.

Training A Puppy Dog

training a puppy dog
What standards are there for training a puppy or dog to be a service animal?

I live in Massachusetts, and I want to train my lab puppy so that I can take her into nursing homes to visit residents as a service/therapy dog. Any information about certification in MA would be helpful.

She will go to obedience training and be taught basic commands like sit, stay, down, off, heel, and stop.

Thanks!

As the others have said, a service dog and a therapy dog are completely different things.

To qualify to have a service dog, you must be disabled. The dog must be trained to do something to mitigate the disability, and to behave properly in public. There is no certification, registration, or licensing requirement for service dogs in the US, and they are allowed in just about any public place that the general public is allowed with very few exceptions.

Therapy dogs are pets that go with their handler to bring joy to others. Therapy dogs are not certified but are normally registered and licensed with a therapy dog organization. There is not a legal requirement to be with a therapy dog organization, but most places will not allow independent therapy dogs because those with organization are insured.

My service dog is also a registered service dog with TDI. We had to take a short test that was given at a dog festival. We had to do a sit stay, the test examiner approached, shook me hand, pet him, brushed him. We then did a down stay, walk on a loose leash, walk with a friendly dog approaching, walk through a group of people using medical equipment (wheelchairs, crutches, walkers). We had to demonstrate a "leave it" command where they put a sausage in a bowl on the ground. We had to walk within 3 feet of it and he had to leave it. Then we did a 3 min thing where I left him with the examiner and I had to go out of his sight for 3 min.

For us, it wasn't a difficult test at all.

Dog Cat Training

dog cat training
How can I train my dog to get along with a cat?

I own a 1 year old German Shepard who has only lived with other dogs. Now that he is the only dog in the house I want to get a cat but I am clueless on how to get my dog and cat to be friends.

GSDs tend to have high prey drives. It's important to get a cat who isn't scared of dogs. A cat who runs away is going to tend to be chased and possibly even killed (as prey). Check with friends who have dog-wise cats and ask if you can arrange for your dog to meet their cat. Keep your dog on a leash, of course, for safety, and see how he reacts. Each dog is different. My male will casually sniff a cat and then he loses all interest. One of my girls likes to suck on cat heads. Some cats disapprove of this, but one of mine thought it was actually great fun and they became best buddies. My other girl thinks it's great fun to dip her stuffed raccoon in the water bowl and then mash cats with it, which apparently no cat really appreciates. I wound up taking away the raccoon and now the cat will sleep curled up with her happily when it's cold out. She will tend to chase him when he gets a wild hair and goes running through the house, but I've taught all my dogs "leave it" and then the more specific "no kitty." She grew up with cats in the whelping box so I'm not worried about her hurting him when she catches up (she just thinks they're playing tag).

Once you can get a dog to "leave it" with liver, he'll "leave it" for just about anything if you get the command out fast enough.

I'd go for an adult, dog-wise cat, and set up a dog-free zone for the cat. I have a kitty buffet, a desk in my kitchen, where I give the cats food and water, and they have beds. It's out of reach of the dogs, so if they need time away from getting moistened, they have a place to go.

Dog boarding park offers a comprehensive care for your pets

Dog boarding park is normally a dog boarding and training center spread over a large area of land for the improvement of conditions of canine friends with dog daycare, dog grooming and boarding and many more facilities under one shade. You are able to provide all kinds of services to your pet in the same setting. The main aim of the dog boarding park is to offer comprehensive pet service to make the dog happy and provide the best quality training.
Before getting your dog admitted to any dog boarding park, you should visit the site to have a feel of the place and check all the amenities that they provide. It has the facility where you can spend the night with your dog and judge the reaction of the dog for his approval. There is another way of finding efficient dog boarding park is through websites of reputed pet service providers. You can get all the needful information when you search for them in the internet.
The dog boarding park is a true place for the development of the dog in terms of its physical abilities as well as mental strength. There is enough scope of socializing of the dog. It is not that sort of dog boarding house, where the pets live in cage like rooms without much of playground to play in outdoors with very little room for play indoors. On the contrary, the dog boarding park offers a long playground where the dog gets fitter day by day because of the ample opportunities to play in open through the long stretched strips of grass and wood along with other dogs.
Every dog boarding park has a day care service along with the long staying provisions for dog boarding and training. The day care facility is excellent where you can leave the dog and collect your pet when you leave office and return home. You dog will enjoy the period with pleasure and fun which you can mark out from his behavior. The doggy boarding is also a perfect home for the needy dogs that really require the sanctity of a peaceful shelter.
An elegant dog boarding park has all the sections properly arranged for your dog. A complete day will consist of scientific training, playtime activities, socializing lessons, yummy treats and a special attention to individual dogs before going for the comforts of the bedding in the sleeping quarters. A dog boarding park should maintain a quality hygienic standard and should appear clean and modern. The professionals at the doggy boarding are well qualified in dog training and are considered best canine friends. You should spot an authentic dog boarding park that believes in care of pets as friends and does not treat them as animals.

Dog House Training

I need help with adult dog house training!?

My dog (about a year and 4 months old) will not poo outside. He will willingly pee outside, but he continues to poo inside (and not on the puppy pads we set out for him either.) If you haveany suggestions that will be great, because if he is not housetrained soon, my mom is going to get him a house outside. He is a Teacup Yorkie and only weighs 5 pounds! So please HELP!
By the way, he has no specific poo time. He just poos whenever!!! That is one of the things that is very frustrating...

A dog that small should NOT be kept outside. It is too dangerous. If you cant housebreak him, then I would suggest you give him to someone who can, and who will keep him inside.
Try paying attention to the time of day when he goes (most dogs go about the same time every day, frequently right after they eat).
Make sure you take him outside at that time, then keep taking him back out at regular intervals until he goes. When he goes outside, praise him, and take him back in the house.
If he makes a mistake in the house, tell him "NO", then take both him and the poo outside, and place the poo where you want him to go. That way he will know where the bathroom is supposed to be :o)
You can use something like Natures Miracle to remove the smell in the house, so he is not tempted to go back to the same place.

Puppy Potty Training Tips

Puppy Potty-Training Tips

While your lovely new puppy may have an abundance of licks and cuddles, what it doesn’t have the built-in knowledge to tell you when it needs to go potty. Potty-training can be one of the most challenging tasks a pet owner can face, and without positive training techniques and patience, it can be a very daunting experience! In this article, we’re going to discuss a few tips that can help significantly ease the stress of training your pup.

Before you begin training your puppy, you must realize that it is a learned process for him, and he is, after all, only young. Potty training a dog takes a lot of patience, and you can usually expect accidents to occur for a good 1 – 2 months whilst training. When your puppy has an accident, you have to be willing to take some of the blame onto yourself ("I should have been watching him better.") and pay more attention to his body language. Puppies generally show signs that they need to potty, such as whimpering, restlessness, or the ever-famous "enthusiastic sniffing & circling" of the floor (not to be confused with his sniffing the furniture or walls, which is just his way of getting to know your home).

The first thing you must realize is that 15 – 20 minutes after a puppy eats or drinks, he will usually be ready to potty. The key is to have him in the right place when the time comes. Taking your pup outside about ten minutes after he eats for a ten minute romp around the garden not only saves you from having a mess to clean up indoors, he will also become familiar with the routine and recognize the proper environment for "potty time".

The next tip is to try to schedule your dog’s meal and potty schedule around your availability to take him outside. Try to think of times in the day when you can spare about 30 minutes—that’s roughly the amount of time you should commit per feeding/potty session. As mentioned before, it’s very important that you establish a routine with your dog, and you’re more likely to keep up the routine if it works to your convenience.

When you’re home with your dog, try to keep him with you as much as possible. Not only does this make it easier for you to learn and recognize his signs of needing to potty, but it also helps to establish a bond between you and your puppy.

Praise your pup when he does his business outside. Pick a word or phrase you want him to recognize as praise. Typically it tends to be something like "Good boy/girl". Now is also a good time to begin teaching your pup the word "no". Repeating it clearly and firmly when your puppy has an accident will familiarize him with the phrase and he will eventually realize that this word crops up when he does something naughty.

Lastly, try to make the process as simple as possible. While it’s great fun to romp around the yard with your pup, you’ll want the focus of potty trips outside to be solely for that purpose. Later on you may want to combine walks and play-time with potty breaks, but for the sake of keeping your puppy as least confused as possible, try to separate the activities until he has become housebroken. Also, try making a pallet of newspaper in an area of the house your puppy can find easily but won’t offend family/guests. If you catch your pup in the act but can’t make it outside to correct him, move him to the newspaper quickly to show him that until he gains better control, there is one place in the house acceptable to potty. Some have reported that leaving a small bit of pup urine on the newspaper will encourage him to go there.

Keep in mind that this process can be stressful on the pup as well as yourself, but don’t forget to have fun and work on creating a solid bond with your new family member!

Teaching English in abroad with dogs?

I am looking for an teaching position abroad - do not have too many preferences as to where - but somewhere that has a need for multiple teachers - my soon to be husband and I - and allows dogs without quarantine- we have 2.

We both have a Bachelors in English with a minor in Secondary Education - waiting for our Colorado teaching licenses to process. So we have experience teaching students already and plenty of knowledge and strategies.

Our dogs have been through obedience training and will most likely be getting their Canine Good Citizen certificates this summer.

Any info you can provide would be wonderful, particularly links!

I know that South Korea allows dogs - but they eat them and people will steal pets to sell for meat.... According to my searches, the Czech Republic and Slovakia allow pets without quarantine. But I am not sure how to find a job!!
Heh - that is pathetic - I made a grammar error in my query.

Oh my gosh! Come to Prague! It is dog heaven! People love dogs here and they are allowed everywhere! Honestly.

I have been teaching here in Prague for almost three years. I did a 4 week TEFL course here, and just decided to stay. It is super easy to find teaching jobs (there are close to 100 Language schools in Prague) and once you have the TEFL you should be able to work - no problem. I was working about 2 weeks after I graduated.

So my vote is Prague. Great for teachers, great for dogs, and an awesome expat community. :)

Cat Training Tips

Easy Cat Training - Actions Speak Louder Than Words

Easy Cat Training Ideas You Can Use.

Cats are very rewarding pets. They are clever, comparatively easy to care for and can be trained if you know the way to do it correctly . The very first thing to teach a cat is it's name. You'll want it to come to you when you call its name, so repeat this exercise a number of times.
Cats have wants, for example food, water, somewhere to strop their claws and toys or items to capture their interest. If you fail to offer an acceptable scratching post, for example, a cat will use your couch or stereo speakers to strop its claws. Your pet cat isn't doing this'to be naughty' but it doesn't have an alternative.
If the cat starts to scratch the furniture, you can remove the animal and place it at the scratching post. You might want to do this a number of times, but it will eventually realize what the scratching post is for.

Cats naturally chew and play with things. Providing your pet cat with an assortment of fascinating cat toys means she or he is much less likely to munch up your slippers or cushions instead.
It is always a really bad idea to hit a cat. Hitting an animal just makes it scared of you and it doesn't understand the relationship of being hit with behaving in an incongruous way. Often a firm 'no' or clapping your hands will let your pet cat know you disapprove of whatever it is doing wrong.

It's not that the cat understands your spoken word, but the oppressive sound and tone of your voice is sufficient to make it realize something is wrong . Some folks employ a water sprayer to spray the cat's face if it does something wrong. This is also perfectly sufficient and can be used if you're coaching your pet cat.
Some cats like being sprayed ( not many though ) so, for them, an intense noise like a clap can be employed instead.

If your kitty does something good, it is fine to reward it with a cat treat or a minute or two of playtime between you both. It will then associate it's good behaviour with receiving a treat or some sort of bonus.

Cats are naturally nighttime but can be trained to sleep at night. A cat pouncing on you at five in the morning expecting food can be inconvenient! If you get up and feed your pet cat, you are inspiring this behavior.

Having a set feeding time and sticking to it will let the cat know it is pointless to awaken you in the middle of the night because it is not going to be fed. Ensure you play with your pet cat in the daytime and supply it with toys so it is tired enough to need to sleep at night.

Different breeds need slightly different types of coaching. Some breeds can be quiet and shy and others could be more rambunctious. The most important thing is to get to know your particular pet cat and see how it replies best to the training.

The japanese Bobtail, for instance, is very delicate and resilient. This implies it'll keep stropping the settee although you are roaring at it to stop as it is less intimidated by you than, for example, a Persian or Ragdoll cat. You can still train it ? Just change your approach slightly .

Cat coaching is typically about using common-sense and making sure your pet cat has everything it needs for an ecstatic life. Correct training and a lot of adore and care will make sure the two of you have a successful relationship and a large amount of fun together!

With these and more easy cat training tips and ideas, you will learn how to get the very best from your feline friend. Your cat deserves the very best you can give it for it to be a loving and obedient friend. Click here to visit our website.

whats best when training a dog to walk on a leash a collar or harness?

she is my grandparents dog but im going to start helping by alteast training her to walk and taking her often. they dont like they thicker nylon type bucckle collars so she doesnt wear one of them. she has a metal chain one woth the loops so if u hook a leash to it it will pull tight. i dont think that would be good to start training because i dont want to choke her constantly, so would a harness be better or get a nylon collar just for walks? basically which is a more effective and safe way to train?
hmm i never thought of that with her collar all of our dogs wore them....they are really unsafe tho huh.

These are great questions, and I agree with you a bit about not starting in a state of constant choking. Some dogs learn quickly from the chain collar, my dog would just choke herself.

I recommend starting the leash training in the house, then move to the yard, then walk the drive way, etc... You can use the chain collar as long as you start small (Dog's should NEVER wear a chain collar all the time). Just start by walking back in forth in the living room, rewarding all loose leash behavior with treats. This will be very easy, and chances are, she'll trot right along with you. I recommend going slow, using the house for a few days. Then, move to the yard. do the same training. Then, up and down the street, same training. You'll be well on the way!! Remember, never take another step on a tight leash. If she pulls all the way to the end, just stop and wait for her to look back, and relax the leash tension, then go forward. Good Luck!

Oh, note: harness, unless designed as a no pull harness, can increase pulling.

Dog Whispering Really Works

Let's look back at our childhood... you're in your room reading a book and you hear " Johnny come here right now!" It's your mom yelling at you. Would you gladly run over to greet her? Probably not! You would be shaking in your boots, and reluctantly head over. the same applies to dogs!

Instead of being a big intimidating owner, why not trying telling your dog to come in a calm voice. Dogs read our energy, and the more calm we are, the more calm the dog is.

Always, remember to practice this tone IN YOUR HOME. This way you can practice in an controlled environment, avoiding distractions such as small animals, people or other dogs.

When practicing in your homw, be sure to praise your dog constantly as he is making the right decision. Make yourself a fun place to be with lots of pats and praise :)

Dogs read our body language as well, so it is important to show them submission signals at the right time. This way we can encourage them to follow our command, showing them with our energy, body language, and verbal tones to make the correct decision.

to find out how to practice these stategies and more be sure to look for a bark busters trainer in your area. They are only a phone call away!

To Whom It May Concern:

We were recently hired by Jim & Serena Pritchard who live at 3083 Warren Lane, El Dorado Hills, CA 95762 to evaluate and train their two Standard Poodle dogs.

Our evaluation is that the male dog is territorial and has nipped at ‘new people' in an effort to chase them away from the family home. The dog is not aggressive, but a little over-protective of the Pritchards with strangers walking by.
Super Dog Training
We have spent approximately four hours at the home so far training the Pritchards how to effectively and safely manage their dogs so there will be no more incidents. Additionally, a behavioral training regimen with the dogs has been started in an effort to further dissuade the male from being over-protective in the future.

In my opinion, the Pritchards have the right attitude and have pretty much done everything reasonable and possible to mitigate the problem here. I don't expect the Court to have to deal with the Pritchard dog problem in the future.

Respectfully,

Dog Grooming - Groom Your Dog Yourself

Stop paying for expensive grooming services when you can buy your own equipment for a one off payment and groom your dog yourself. Dog grooming is easy to learn and will not only help you bond with your dog but will give you sense of achievement and satisfaction as you look at your groomed dog and then look at the money you’ve saved.

Follow these 7 steps to a professional dog grooming:

 1. Brush you dog before washing to loosen any dirt. This will make it easier to wash out.
 2. Use warm water and a good non irritating shampoo to wash your dog. The warm water will make the experience more enjoyable for your dog and ensure they are not scared or hesitant next time you want to partake in dog grooming.
 3. Gently clean eyes and ears with a clean, damp cloth. Do not poke too far into your dogs ears as they are sensitive- same goes for the eyes. Remove visible dirt and grime.
 4. Trim your dogs nails using specialty dog clippers. Most dog clippers will come with instructions so follow those closely to ensure your dog is not hurt.
 5. Dry your dog with a towel. If you dogs coat is long or think they may benefit from a blow dry. They may even enjoy the extra warmth and attention.
 6. No dog grooming session is complete without the final brush. Not only will this beautify your pooch but they will enjoy the attention.
 7. Always reward you dog for good behaviour. Give your dog a treat at the end of their dog grooming session as this will teach them that if they behave while being groomed they will get a treat. If you are in the process of training your dog then they will know that a treat is good, and no treat is bad.

It’s that simple. So save you money, bond with your pet and prove to yourself that you can do it.
