14 Requirements for Becoming a Dog Trainer

Have you ever dreamed of becoming a dog trainer? Here you will find the requirements you should fulfill and the time it may take you to make your dream come true.


Before considering a career in dog training, you should consider some important requirements. You must be aware that loving dogs is not enough to be a successful trainer. You must be proficient in dog behavior, learning theories, behavior modification, first aids (both human and canine), marketing and business management.


In addition, you may want to train dogs for competitions, such as Schutzhund, Agility, Mondio Ring, Freestyle, etc. In this case, you should have a strong knowledge of rules and competitive procedures.


To make a long story short, the list below explains you the 17 most important requirements you must fulfill to be a dog trainer:


1. You must be passionate about working with dogs. Otherwise you will be very unhappy with your job. Taking away exceptional cases, dog training is not a high-salary career. So, you should not expect to compensate frustrations with money. That's why you really have to be passionate about working with dogs. Of course, this passion can only come if you love dogs. If you don't love dogs and are not passionate about working with them, just look for another job.


2. You must feel comfortable working with people. Feeling comfortable working with people is as being comfortable working with dogs. That's because the job of a dog trainer involves teaching people as much as teaching dogs, or even more. If you don't teach people how to handle their dogs in different situations, then they won't be able to control their pets. As a consequence, your dog training business is not going to receive any good publicity.


3. You should be respectful and kind with both people. Acting in an arrogant manner toward other trainers, dog owners, animal behaviorists or anyone, can't help you. Arrogant behavior does not create word of mouth publicity. Even worse, people who attended a training class with an arrogant instructor, tend to not go to the same place when they need help again. So, being polite and respectful is part of developing your dog training business.


4. You should be respectful and kind with animals. This point needs no further explanation. Nobody wants his dog be mistreated by a harsh trainer.


5. Develop teaching skills. Since you are going to teach people how to handle and train their own dogs, you must have some teaching skills. There are lots of good trainers that don't succeed because they can't teach people how to train their dogs.


6. Be patient. Patience is perhaps the most important skill a dog trainer must master. Dogs can't be trained in a couple of minutes. So, you need to be patient to allow the dog (and the owner) learn at their own pace.


7. Sense of humor. You are going to find a lot of problems during training sessions. However, many of those problems are so funny that they deserve a dose of humor. Having good sense of humor allows you to not get buried under a 'problematic job' and helps you to be creative when solving a behavior issue.


8. Be honest. You have to tell the dog owner what really happens. Not what he wants to hear. There are problems that can't be solved by training and, if you face one of those problems, you should inform the dog owner. On the other hand, there could be some issues that you can't handle. Be honest with the dog owner. If you can't address an issue (for instance, aggression) recommend another dog trainer who can.


9. Never underestimate the skills of other dog trainers. It does not matter if they use old techniques that you don't approve. Every dog trainer has his own method and nobody should be underestimated by the way he trains. Of course, you may disagree with other dog trainers, but never underestimate them.


10. Learn about several dog training techniques, even the old ones. Knowing the pros and cons of each technique will let you choose the right ones. This does not mean you should try every technique you've heard about. But reading books and watching videos about different techniques may teach something new and improve your training skills.


11. Keep up to date on the science of animal behavior and learning theories. Dog training is not a science but it is based on some scientific principles. As a good dog trainer you have to be up to date on animal behavior and learning theories to take advantage of recent discoveries.


12. Read a lot about dog training, but don't believe all you read. There are lots of myths and hypes in dog trainer. As a dog trainer you should keep some skepticism and critical thinking.


13. Learn about marketing, publicity and business management. If you are a professional dog trainer, then you have to manage your dog training business. Otherwise you are not a pro.


14. Learn about dog nutrition, health and care. Put a lot of attention of dog first-aids because you will need them sometime. Besides, learn about management of kennels, doggy daycare, etc.

Accident Injures a Blind Man and His Dog

John Cooper and his guide dog, Faith received a nasty shock when they fell into a three foot pothole two weeks ago. They were walking down Gateshead Road in Hertfordshire where a pothole was left open without barriers when the incident happened.

Due to the lack of barriers, Faith missed the hazard. While she is trained to recognise signals such as cones and barriers she was unable to prevent Mr Cooper from falling into the open pothole.

The pair both suffered minor injuries and discomfort after falling into the hole which was full of sewage. Mr Cooper says he feels lucky not to have been more seriously injured.

The accident comes just weeks after a partially sighted man, 93 year old Jack Gardener, received £8,500 compensation after experiencing a similar accident in the same area.

Mr Gardener tripped on an uneven paving stone in Shenley Road, after which he suffered injuries and pursued an accident claim against Hertfordshire County Council.

Mr Cooper’s accident is believed to be the fault of engineering company Balfour Beatty, who were carrying out engineering work at the time. Balfour Beatty are carrying out an investigation into what happened.

Mr Cooper spoke of his and Faith’s experience:

“I went to A&E and had to have injections for tetanus and diphtheria. It is not life-threatening and I will recover, but I have leg injuries, cuts and bruises. We had to take Faith to the vet. We have been together for five-and-a-half years and have not had an accident before.”

Dog training courses can mean the difference between having a happy dog and happy life - or not. Dogs are happier, healthier and safer when they have loving boundaries set for them and that's what dog training courses help you learn to set for your dog.

First let's take a look at the overall methods that dog training courses use. If you find a method that suits you best, you will know the type of course that will best for you and your dog.

Types of Dog Training Courses

Reward Training: Emphasizes positive reinforcement -- instead of punishing or yelling at your dog for what you don't want him to do, you reward your dog for doing what you want him to do. Rewards consist of praise and petting as well as treats. Treats are especially used in the early learning stages of a new behavior.

Dog Whispering: Dog Whispering is more of a general philosophy than a method. This is a more advanced method that should taken on by dog lovers who feel very confident in their connection with their dogs and are interested in learning about canine behaviors, motivation and body language.

Choke or Check Collar Training: Choke collars are collars that slip over a dogs head onto it neck and tighten down on the dogs neck when it pulls too hard on its leash. Choke collars were designed for professional trainers and for limited use - there is a health risk to your dog's neck and trachea when using them. In general, dog training courses that emphasize choke or check collar training are not recommended.

Prong Collar Training: Don't even think about this method. A prong collar has metal ends that stick into a dog's flesh and digs into its neck when it pulls on its leash. Inhumane period!

Head Collar Training: Very humane collar that gently redirects a dog's attention or the way you want him to go instead of punishing or hurting him as the two methods directly above do. Very effective especially when used with Reward Training.

Clicker Training: This method takes a hand-held clicker, which oddly enough makes a "clicking" noise when squeezed. During clicker training, a dog is reinforced in behaviors with doggie treats paired with the clicking noise. At some point, the treats will be eliminated and the dog will know it has done something right simply by hearing the clicking noise. Very effective.

Electric Collar Training: As the name implies, this type of training involves your dog wearing a collar in which you are able to administer an electric shock to discourage certain behaviors. this method should only be used by professional trainers in the most extreme circumstances. If you are reading this blog, collar training is not for you -- or your dog.

Ultrasonic Whistle Training: You know of the dog whistles that you can't hear but a dog can - right? This method uses these whistles to get your dog's attention as well as to train him. You will need to be trained in this method first.

Moving to London

London is a great place to live and work, with a lot of cultural diversity and a huge range of attractions, making it an exciting and fun place to live.

If you’re planning on moving house to London, then you’ll find that property prices vary significantly from one part of London to another and you if you’re moving to London for work, you may consider instead buying or renting somewhere in one of the surrounding counties – Essex, Hertfordshire, Buckinghamshire, Berkshire, Surrey or Kent (starting to the North East of London and finishing South East of London).

Here, property prices will be significantly cheaper and you’ll be able to commute to work for £1,000 - £2,500 or so a year, depending on your location.

For removals to London, parking is often an issue, so we recommend obtaining a parking permit for your removal van and perhaps planning your house or office move for a relatively quiet time of day. Choosing which area of London to move to

Many people say that when you relocate to London, you will always be a ‘Northerner’ or a ‘Southerner’, depending on which side of the Thames you are on.

North London has more tube stations and public transport and has always been considered more up-market.  The majority of London’s business and corporate world is based North of the river, so when you’re in North London, there is a feeling of industry.

North London includes Archway, Hampstead and Highgate, which have more of a small town atmosphere, with several large parks and a good selection of pubs and restaurants.

North West London includes Camden, Kilburn, Notting Hill, Willesden Green and Wembley, where there is an active night life with busy markets and up market restaurants and bars. The most popular markets include Camden and Portobello Road.

West London (but still North of the river) includes Acton, Hammersmith and  Shepherd’s Bush, where a large number of Aussies and Kiwis have relocated.  The houses in West London are more affordable than the rest of North London.

The history of South London is that it used to be outside of the city walls, so it was once a rural location.  As a result of this, South London has more parks and greenery.  You’re also closer to Brighton and the seaside.

In South London you find Battersea, Brixton, Clapham and Wandsworth, where many old factories have been replaced by modern apartments.  Battersea is home to the Dog’s and Cats home, the New Covent Garden Market and Battersea park, containing 83 hectares of greenery.  While the whole of the London underground is crowded and busy, Clapham Junction is the busiest station in the whole of Europe, with trains transporting people to a wide range of destinations.

South West London is the location of Earl’s Court, Fulham, Putney, Wimbledon and Southfields.  Earls Court in Kensington and Chelsea has a thriving social atmosphere and is home to the Earls Court Exhibition Centre, one of the country's largest indoor arenas and a popular concert venue.

The area of London best known for its industry is perhaps the South East, with Canary Wharf, the Docklands being home to numerous businesses and huge office blocks for banks and other major industries.  The relatively new Docklands Light Rail is fairly prices and offers a quick route to the center of London from the South East.  Canary Wharf and the Docklands are comprised primarily of commercial enterprises, so for more of a social and historical atmosphere, we’d recommend Greenwich instead.

Pet Grooming Training Courses

Dog Grooming?

I am interested in working with animals as a career. I really seem to like the Dog Grooming "industry". I've heard its extremely physically demanding (and I should know I groom, if you'd call it that, my own dog- a 115lbs bouvier). I also have heard it can be extremely hardwork, but i think I'm up to the challenge. Do you have any advice for me as a high school student on where i should get a job, reccomended schools to study at and any other information you could provide. Also, if you can inform me about what i should do if i pursue this career and possibly start a grooming business with other services such as dog walking and pet supply? (I'm willing to get certified as a dog walker as well). There is a shelter close by that I can volunteer at, that also offers pre-training courses for dog walking and registering CGC & therapy dogs if that matters. I appreciate any answers or other suggestions for occupations within this field as well. Thanks so much

right now there is no certification to be a groomer...there are a lot of schools for it, but you can save your money and get hands on training at a groomer by becoming their bather for awhile...i went to the library 15 years ago and got some books on standard breed grooming, bathed dogs for a couple months and basically bullshitted my way in....just takes a LOT of patience....i repeat, a LOT of patience! good luck! i think a lot of the schools take the compassion for dogs out of it and too many groomers are just money oriented..don't sell out, do it for the dogs!

Timid dog- I have a German Shepherd, she is very timid PLEASE HELP. x?

My dog is lovely with the family and very affectionate, she has been away on a 3 week residential training course, she has come back but we cant really see many improvements, she is aggresive towards humans and dogs that she is not familiar with, we watch the dog whisperer and have picked up techniques which are helping e.g- not looking her in the eye, this seems to be working, but does anyone have any more advice?

Yep. Don't send your dog away for training, as *you* need to know how to handle the dog as well.

The dog may be genetically "shy", or have socialization problems. Your best resource is your vet, who can give you trainer recommendations.

If it is a genetic issue, then there is no fixing it, only controlling it. If it is a socialization issue, it's not too late to turn your dog around, but you need the help of a great trainer. Good luck.
