whats best when training a dog to walk on a leash a collar or harness?

she is my grandparents dog but im going to start helping by alteast training her to walk and taking her often. they dont like they thicker nylon type bucckle collars so she doesnt wear one of them. she has a metal chain one woth the loops so if u hook a leash to it it will pull tight. i dont think that would be good to start training because i dont want to choke her constantly, so would a harness be better or get a nylon collar just for walks? basically which is a more effective and safe way to train?
hmm i never thought of that with her collar all of our dogs wore them....they are really unsafe tho huh.

These are great questions, and I agree with you a bit about not starting in a state of constant choking. Some dogs learn quickly from the chain collar, my dog would just choke herself.

I recommend starting the leash training in the house, then move to the yard, then walk the drive way, etc... You can use the chain collar as long as you start small (Dog's should NEVER wear a chain collar all the time). Just start by walking back in forth in the living room, rewarding all loose leash behavior with treats. This will be very easy, and chances are, she'll trot right along with you. I recommend going slow, using the house for a few days. Then, move to the yard. do the same training. Then, up and down the street, same training. You'll be well on the way!! Remember, never take another step on a tight leash. If she pulls all the way to the end, just stop and wait for her to look back, and relax the leash tension, then go forward. Good Luck!

Oh, note: harness, unless designed as a no pull harness, can increase pulling.
