Most dog trainers believe that the best way to train any dog is using a method called positive reinforcement training. For those who are doing home dog obedience training this process simply entails using positive reinforcement for good behavior and ignoring bad behavior.

A dog's natural instinct is to please her owner. Positive reinforcement uses this instinct and allows your dog to learn what it is you want her to do. This type of training has more meaning to your dog because she is able to learn what you want her to do using her own mental capacity.

Here are some quick tips you can use to implement this training method at home:

1. Pick good rewards. You need to keep your dog's interest level up in what you are doing. A pat on the head or saying "good girl" will lose a dogs interest pretty quickly. Use tempting rewards such as food treats and physical affection to reinforce your dog's good behavior. Dog trainers call these primary incentives and dogs are very responsive to these.

Dog Training and Your Relationship With Your Dog

My best friend is incredible! He's one of those rare types who hangs on every word you say. He's content to be quiet when I need stillness, even though he's one of those high-drive types. All I have to do is call and he's there in an instant, no matter what he was doing before. He puts me ahead of all her other friends, never fails to make me feel special, and is a redhead just like me. But he's not a person, even though he's sure he is. He is a butterfly dog; a Papillon. 

When I brought this eight-week-old bundle of joy home, I didn't know what to call her. I'm not very good at naming anything, so I usually just observe for a couple of weeks and let the animal name itself by its personality. This puppy's name became evident in nothing flat: Tazzie. He whirled around the house, jumping up on furniture five times her size, zooming and zipping and totally charming me. He was, indeed, a Tasmanian devil pup. I quickly realized the athleticism of this dog and knew I'd have to find her a "job" when he got a little older. High-drive dogs, that don't have "jobs," will certainly find other outlets for their energy and those outlets aren't usually things you would enjoy! 

You already have a burning love for your puppy, but what is your relationship like? Does it come when you call it? Does it sit or lay or stay? From your first class, at your dog training school, your relationship with your dog begins to change. I will warn you, however, that anything you want to teach your dog won't come just with a once-a-week class, even if you have the best dog training school in the world. You have to practice with them, just a little bit, every day. 

Tazzie was a very food-motivated dog, so the fact that he got food every time he did something right made training a blast for her, all by itself. And this happened every day! Bonus! He made fast friends at her new dog training school, so going to class was fun as well. He got to where he would whine, as soon as we pulled in the parking lot, until I finally got her out of that car.

So now you're taking your dog to classes in a place they love, and you're working with them every day. During that time, you're paying complete attention to them, teaching them to pay complete attention to you, and they get their favorite food as icing on the cake. This does incredible things for the bond between you and your dog. They learn to focus on you, no matter what, and good things will come. They get praised and fed, or praised and allowed to tug on a toy, whichever motivates the dog more, so your relationship can't help but blossom. 

Ever since Tazzie and I started training together, he has claimed me as her own. When my other two dogs want to sit on my lap, he'll push them out of the way to get the best spot because, I am her property, as far as he's concerned. I do give the other dogs personal time as well, but I have to put her in a sit/stay or a down/stay so he'll let them come get love. 

He is, by far, the one I can trust the most, not only because of her training, but from the bond we gained through the training. He never takes her eyes off of me, since we began at our dog training school, and it serves us well in the agility ring! 

If you want to forever alter and solidify the bond you share with your dog, find yourself a good dog training school, for whatever discipline you prefer, and go for it. With a little time, money, and patience, your relationship will become a forever relationship. If you do, your dog will turn out to be your best friend too!

My 1.5 old dog Harleigh has been responding really well with positive training but occasionally when she feels like I am on the phone too long or not paying her enough attention she chews books and papers up. I don't want to yell at her because it gives her attention that she is looking for but I want a good way to discipline her that is effective so I can save the rest of my paperbacks and bills.

Use a verbal correction, that is fine. I use verbal corrections with my puppy. Just an "ah ah!"

Just give her something else to chew on instead. I like putting some peanut butter in a kong and freezing it. That will take a good hour or two to get out.

This type of dog is characteristically nervous and highly-strung, which condition manifest as a dog with a hair-trigger response to aggression at the slightest perceived provocation (usually more imaginary than real) or a dog that slinks around in a constant state of fear. 3. Bonding: A well trained dog is a happy dog. When you and your dog understand one another well your relationship is going to be that much richer for it.The only way to achieve that level of harmony in your relationship with your dog is if you both work at understanding one another; and that will only be achieved through proper training. As frequently happens with human adolescents, a bored dog is going to be driven to destructive behavior; this is especially true in the smarter breed of dog.

 

Types of Dog Training

1. Reward Training

 

Currently a big favorite in dog training circles, this technique employs the use of treats to reinforce good and desired behavior patterns executed by your dog. When used correctly this is a pretty effective training technique but its downside is that it is fairly easy to abuse the system and thus nullify its effectiveness by giving your dog treats at times other than during dog training sessions.

 

2. Clicker Training

 

Clicker training is a classic Pavlovian technique that utilizes conditional training through sensory association. As the name suggests the clicker, which is a plastic box with an inbuilt metal strip that makes the actual clicking sound, is used in conjunction with a treat or something your dog finds highly desirable to reinforce and encourage a particular behavior. In time the treat reward is removed yet the dog still associates a given behavior with the sound of the clicker and thus performs that behavior in the absence of the treat.

 

3. Whistle Training

 

Dogs have far better hearing than people and can hear frequencies that our ears cannot pick up. It is on the basis of this premise that the ultrasonic whistle functions which means that since you cannot hear it but your dog can (supposedly) it can be a little tricky getting to grips with its use.

 

4. Dog Whispering

 

Yeah sounds a bit corny doesn't it and most likely the name of this method is an obvious offshoot reference from the 1998 Robert Redford movie (starring amongst others a young Scarlett Johansson) titled the Horse Whisperer themed around a man who had an uncanny ability to communicate with horses. Anyway these days Dog Whispering is now a broadly accepted term and its training technique is based on understanding a dog' body language and the many unvocalized signals that are part and parcel of dog communication.

 

These four examples above are just a few of the dog training methods available and in fact there are a whole slew of collar based  training methods that have not been listed here partly because some of them are archaic and barbaric such as electric collar training or prong collars.

In summary, this article barely touches the tip of the iceberg as far as dog training is concerned but the thing to remember is that utilizing dog training in the everyday life of your pooch will greatly enrich the relationship the two of you share.

Dog Training Program

There are so many dog training programs online, anyone know of a trust worthy dog training review site?

I have 3 dogs, my youngest Maya a Boxer/Lab is just a terror, I always have to keep an eye on her, the middle child Stella also a Boxer/lab but unrelated is almost the perfect dog except everything scares her and my oldest Mugli a Golden/Lab barks at everything. I need to get these guy's under control any and all help is welcomed.

I highly recommend working with a trainer in person who can help you. I also recommend going to the APDT website and do a trainer search to find one near you.

What are some easy ways to train my dog?

My dog is really frisky when she see's me and jumps on me.If im eating food she takes my food away.She want sit or roll over.Just barks alot and always hungry.How can i help my dog.She is a year and a half.And is part Collie.

There's your problem! Part Collie! LoL I'm teasing :) I had a Boarder Collie for 18 years.

I taught my dog not to jump on me by FIRMLY saying no and pushing her off of me, then ignored him. If he did it again I repeated the above step. He eventually learned not to jump because he missed his daily attention when I got home.

If he's taking your food from your plate or hands you need to not eat in front of her. Let her know dinner/breakfast/lunch is your time and she does not need to be included.

Dog Training with a Halti or General Leader Collar

Head collars have become an increasingly popular dog training tool in the past few years. Two of the most well known brands of head collar on the market are the Gentle Leader and the Halti, but there are many other brands that incorporate the basic head collar concept.

Although a very helpful tool, a head collar should not be used as a replacement for effective dog training. A head collar is most effective when it is used in combination with strong and sensible dog training methods, such as reward training and other forms of positive reinforcement.

What type of head collar is best?

Many dog owners favor the Gentle Leader design, finding it easier to fit that the Halti. The Gentle Leader is also designed to fasten around the dog's neck, which means that even if the dog is somehow able to wriggle out of the muzzle, it is still wearing a collar. This safety feature is very important, especially during training outside or in novel situations. The Halti, on the other hand, offers better control of the dog, and for this reason it is often favored when working with larger breeds. It is also useful when training an older dog who has developed any aggressive traits.

Training a dog with a head collar has a number of advantages over training with a traditional or training collar. Head collars are often easier to use for beginning dog trainers than are conventional training collars. Head collars are also quite effective at preventing dogs from pulling, or controlling and retraining dogs that tend to pull.

Head collars can also be quite effective at controlling dogs in difficult situations, such as controlling a dog that wants to be with other dogs. Most owners know of some situations in which their dogs are difficult to control, and head collars can be very useful in volatile situations.

Head collars are excellent for gaining control of dogs that are very strong, or for working with a dog in an area that contains a great many distractions. Head collars are great for when your dog is on an outing, or in an area where there will be other dogs and other distractions.

Are there any disadvantages in using head collars?

Well, yes, head collars do have some distinct disadvantages as well. Head collars tend to encourage a dog's behavior to be dependent on the equipment being used at the time. Dogs quickly learn the difference between their regular collar and the head collar, and adjust their behavior accordingly, so you may find yourself having to use the head collar as a matter of course.

If a dog is not accustomed to wearing a head collar, there may be such a dislike of wearing it that your dog may paw at it, try to rub it off or pull excessively. If your dog exhibits this behavior, the best strategy is to keep your dog moving until it learns to accept the collar.

When you're walking your dog with a head collar, you may find that many people think that a head collar is a muzzle, and react to the dog with some trepidation. While this is not necessarily a disadvantage of the head collar, many dog owners do find it troublesome.

So training with a head collar is much like training with a training collar or any other equipment. While the head collar can be an important and useful tool, it is important to fit it properly, use it appropriately, and to combine its use with solid training methods. The eventual goal of dog training with a head collar should be to have the dog behave as well with a regular collar as it does with the specialized head collar. And because some dogs behave differently when in the head collar and a regular collar, this goal may take considerable work to achieve!

Dog Training – Dog Punishments

There are many different punishments for getting your dog to learn the difference between right and wrong, and there are many dog trainers that will tell you that their method is the best way or that a different type of punishment, whether it be positive or negative punishment, is better than the method you’re using now.


Dogs need punishment to keep them in order and to teach them what is acceptable and what is not, without some form of punishment there would be no way of showing your dog these things, and no way of training them.


There are two types of punishment for your dogs; there are positive punishments and negative punishments. Positive punishments are punishments when you give you dog something, for example giving a tug on the leash or verbal correction. Negative punishments are when you take away something your dog needs or expects such as treats or toys or having the dog be taken away from you.


I am a strong believer that positive punishments should only be used in moderation or not at all, serious injuries to your dog’s safety and health may occur by over using or incorrectly using positive punishment. There is no dog training exercise that cannot be accomplished by using the negative punishment.


For dog safety reasons I will only talk about negative punishments and dog punishments that I would use and are fully safe for your dogs. 9 times out of 10 positive punishments cause your dog to react in a similar way towards other people or the owner. If you are going to use positive punishment it is highly recommended that you consult a professional dog trainer before doing so.


The most popular and some of the best negative punishment are listed below and should be enforced within 10 seconds of the crime being committed to have any affect and avoid confusion


Time out:


Take your dog to a room cut off from other family members and any attention for a short period of time.


Take away toys:


Stop your dog from having any toys for a short period of time.


Ignore your dog:


Totally ignore your dog for a period of time so they get no attention, fuss, or eye contact.


No treats:


Don’t give your dog the treat he would have normally had for good behavior

Is Reward Training or Dog Collar Training the Best Dog Training Method To Train Your Dog

Reward training is considered by many dog training professionals as the most modern method of training a dog, but reward training is probably a lot older than other methods of dog training. It may be that reward training for dogs has been around as long as there have been dogs to train. It is believed that the early humans used some informal kind of reward training when taming the wolf pups that eventually evolved into modern dogs.

Reward training or positive dog training generally consists of keeping the attention on what the dog is doing right, is usually recognized as not only the most effective method, and as a method that a positive experience for the dog, but also the most modern method of training a dog, but reward training probably is likely older than the other dog training methods, and probably goes way back thousands of years. It is quite conceivable that reward training for dogs has been around as long humans have interacted with dogs.

The earliest known domestic dogs go back to the domestication of abandoned wolf puppies the early humans took in from the gray wolf several tens of thousands of years ago. These early domesticated dogs were trained to do task for humans that included acting as a guard animal, or to herd animals. Early humans probably used some kind of reward training when they started taming the wolf pups that would eventually evolve into modern dogs.

This unique connection existing between dog and man continues up to today. Dogs now usually perform many tasks for their owners, like herding, guarding, hunting, and rescue work or special assistance.

Many advocates of reward training are far less enthusiastic about other methods of dog training, such as those that involve the use of the traditional leash and dog collar training method. However, as far as many other experts are concerned, the best way to train any individual dog is usually a combination of leash/collar training and reward training.

Something that complicates thing a bit is that a training method that works well for one dog may be totally not be appropriate for another dog. Some dogs will only respond well when it comes to reward training but not very well with dog leash training or even dog collar training. It the same time there are other dogs that can respond to leash/collar training but may not be motivated by reward training. It is believed that most dogs will tend to fall somewhere in the middle of these two extremes.

Clicker training is considered to be one of the most popular forms of reward training used today. While clicker training may not be the correct form of training for every dog, it can be a really effective method of training many dogs. How clicker training works by teaching the dog to associate a clicking sound with a reward, like a treat.

You can actually teach your dog the learn without any physical compulsion or correcting at all. The clicker is just a toy-like device used in the initial stages of dog draining. The trainer clicks the clicker when the dog does something good, and is followed immediately by a treat. Over time, the dog will soon learn to respond to the clicker alone.

Positive reinforcement using treats and unlimited praise is the all important key to proper dog training, whether it is with reward training, or dog leash or dog collar training, because it is effective at getting your dog's respect and attention. Both you and your dog will benefit, since in time you will have a faithful companion you can be proud of.
