Im on this forum where ive been told im making things worse for my dog because she isnt housetrained yet.
We took her in when an old owner couldnt properly care for her and she was locked in a crate all day. She wasn't properly housetrained and was allowed to pee and poo in the house without any guidance. Over the last 9 months weve had her (she is now a year and a half) and ive been trying to house train her.
Shes my first dog and we live with my dad and sister. Im only 19 and i feel im the only one dedicating time to this. We managed to get her to stop going in her crate all together and in the day she occasionally will go to pee and poo on newspaper that i leave out.
Ive been told on the forum that this isnt house training and that it must be horrible for my dog.
I just feel so rubbish now, Really upset. I dont know, you guys all might agree but what do you think?
Going on newspaper isn't really housetraining (housetraining means they go outside) but for a dog like this it's a good first step. You can later move the newspaper outside to transition the dog to going outside. Have you tried the puppy pads, which are specially scented to attract the dog?
Also, a good method to housetrain an adult dog is to put the dog on a leash and take it around the house with you. That way you can monitor it the whole time and figure out when it needs to go, and take it out right away.
The thing that people have a problem with is when people start paper training 8-week-old puppies. Some people do this in the winter because it's "too cold" to take the dog outside.... then they act surprised and blame the dog when they have trouble retraining it to go outside in the spring.

Remember to always be enthusiastic while training your dog. Your dog should be sitting with his hips square and not with his back leg tugged behind his hip.
Step 2
Now pull the flat collar towards the left and see the weight of your dog shift towards the left leg. This would leave your dog’s right leg free. Now take the right foot of your dog and shake it by saying, “shake a paw” for the first couple of times. Each time reward your dog with a treat and be enthusiastic about it.
Step 3
Leave the dog free and ask him to shake a paw. When your dog lifts his leg, take the leg and say, “good shake a paw” and reward him again. Do this exercise a couple of times during the day and your dog will understand the command “shake a paw.”
If your dog does not respond to command just repeat step 2 a couple or more times. Don’t force your dog to shake a paw. Remember the objective is to make the training fun for the dog and yourself. So be patient with your dog.

If not, what dog training method do you prefer and use? I use clicker training myself with my dog. In fact, I actually started clicker training when I discovered zsianz1 and kikopup's channels.
People seem to have th wrong idea about clicer training. The clicker sound doesn't /replace/ the reward (food, toy, walk, whatever) it just lets the dog know EXACTLY what earned the reward (as you can mark an exact moment in time) and lets him know that a reward is coming within a few seconds.
The problem with just using treats is that you can sometime reward a few seconds too late and so reward the wrong behaviour. Imagine you're teaching your dog to stand. You lure him up from a sit, he walks forwards, sighs and you give him a treat. You've just reinforced the sigh.
If you do the same thing in clicker training you lure him up and click as he straightens his back legs, he can than walk and sigh all he wants before you treat, you've still reinforced the standing, rather than the sighing because THAT'S when you clicked.
With clicker training you can also reward the tiniest of behaviours. I was having trouble getting my dog to learn to spin by luring him around in a circle. So I sat down with my clicker and waited. When he looked to the left I clicked and followed it with a treat. Next time he looked to the left I clicked and followed it with a treat. Soon he was looking to the left every few seconds so then I stopped clicking that everytime and started only clicking if he turned slightly. Within half an hour he was spinning round in a complete circle without me luring him at all.
You couldn't distinguish such small movements with ordinary training. Your dog would have no idea what it was being rewarded for, with the clicker however (as long as your timing is good enough) you can mark things as small as a shift in weight, a flick of an eye, a tail movement. As long as there's some small behaviour to start off with you can build huge chains of behaviour that are nothing like the original behaviour you started from. Example: I went from clicking my dog for looking at a book to having him do a handstand with his back feet against a wall!
The part where people go wrong in clcker training is they think the clicker /becomes/ a reward, it doesn't, it just becomes a /promise/ of a reward. It says to the dog "I like what you just did, and now I'm going to get you a treat".
You don't /have/ to use a clicker, you can use voice signals too. Both my dogs know that "YES!" also means a treat is coming (useful for when I don't have my clicker to hand). My friends' deaf dog is trained to a flash in the eyes with a torch and a hand clap (as long as he can see it). The thing with the clicker is that it's shorter and sharper so there's less chance of you inadvertantly marking more than one behaviour with it.
I'd reccomend reading "Click for Joy!" by Melissa Alexander. It goes over how the clicker works, how to prime the clicker and how to use it to solve common dog problems and train puppies in basic obedience. It's written in a Q&A format, so it's easy to dip back into when you need reminded of something.
For fun tricks I'd reccomend checking out the users Kikopup and zsianz1 on Youtube. They're both brilliant trainers and their dogs are all 100% clicker trained!

i'm looking into having my dog trained in obedience. he's an extremely intelligent border collie, 2 years old, but he's like a stroppy teenager, if i tell him off for stealing a baby toy that he knows he's not allowed to have then he'll throw himself to the floor like he's going to sleep!! he also has days where he decides he's not in the mood to listen to me so will do something naughty, if i tell him no, (i almost never shout at him and never smack him) he'll do it again as soon as my back is turned.
so you can probably tell, he doesn't need all the training like sit, stay, come here and all that, just needs to learn off-limits areas and off-limits things. i'd like to think one day i can come home and find he hasn't 'pinched' anything.

firstly contact your local vets, they usually have the numbers of local trainers, they really dont cost much our trainers are 50 pound which must be paid at enrolement, this is for a course of ten lessons, the reason they ask for all the money upfront is to ensure you turn up, some clubs train for specialist things ( flyball etc and may be a little more) good luck

I am all for positive reinforcement training. I agree with you on the Petsmart and Petco thing. This group looks like a something to check out. They have the qualifications and philosophy I look for.
When my beloved dog's appetite, lethargy and dyspnea appeared, I realized that without veterinary care I can not do. Nylon leads
This is the cheaper option of dog lead, the simplest form of dog leash available, often causes rubbing and digging into your dog’s skin. Nylon leashes are best avoided.
Bungee leads
These leads help to eliminate the slack that other leads cause so that your dog does not trip over the leash and there is less pulling on your arm from a dog in the training process.
Leather leads
This is a popular type of lead that is comfortable for your dog and gives you full control of how far your dog can wonder. A good lead for training but can be tiring on your arm if your dog tends to try and pull you around.
My Conclusion
It is the preference of the trainer in hand at the end of the day but I feel leather leads are best for me and show your dog sum gentle authority when starting to train. Letting your dog wonder too far on walks can give your dog too much freedom and chance to misbehave.
If you are interested in training then I would go for a leather lead to begin, if you just like going for walks in the park or your dog is well behaved then you could maybe opt for an extendable leash.

One of the easiest ways is to put her on a long line, like a washing line and let it trail, unclip her lead so she thinks she is free and tell her free, you need to practice this so do it in an area where she can't go too far and there are not any or many distractions and no trees or anything the line could get caught up on until you get your recall 100% , when she starts to go away from you say nothing, don't look at her, just go and stand on the line nearest to you, you now have control, that is when you call her, lift the line and gently pull her as you call her name as soon as she is near you, praise her and tell her free letting the line trail again, you need to do this numerous times, each time she comes back, lots of praise then free.............dogs will often not come back as you are stressed ( as they are running off) you are possibly chasing after them, so that makes them feel comfortable as you are keeping within their working distance..instead of running off the other way and they get told off when they eventually do come back or you get them, they are put on a lead and it is the end of their free time...........so all very logical in dogs eyes. You will find very quickly you don't need to pull the line to you for her to come, however keep it on her as it is easier to get control once there is distraction, which is what you then want to practice...the same method with distraction and you will keep calmer as you know you can get control quickly...the key is not to speak until you are standing on the line....there are lots of other ways however this is simple and works well.
What you see on TV from these TV trainers is a tiny part of the training dogs need and what is done by trainers who work on the shows with the dogs and sort out the dogs issues ( and the peoples issues) before the film is spliced...so the 15 minutes of training they do looks impressive, however it is not the full story, it is TV, they do not show the amount of work required or the trainers that do that work.

If you come into the trade for the wrong reasons, you may be disappointed, and quickly. I believe the best reasons to become a dog trainer include multiple factors among which are: You love dogs. You have great people and communication skills. You’re a motivated self-starter. You are entrepreneurial with an interest in sales and marketing. You like to teach.
Yes, loving dogs certainly comes into play. But that affection for the species is only part of the equation because you don’t get to train a single dog until you persuade the owner to hire you. That’s where your sales and marketing skills come in. Training dogs can be a fun hobby, even a profitable one. But if you intend to make a full time career of it, you’ll be answering your own phones, working crazy hours including most weekends, and take client calls at night. You’ll also arrange your own liability and health insurance, make your own tax deposits, and be ready to devote years to honing your craft.

It is somewhat less highly rated on the part of some practicing dog trainers, less because it is competition, and more because the franchisee takes a course of only six to eight weeks, a course which is confined to only to the franchisor’s method. Some dog trainers believe this leaves you lacking exposure to other methods and lacking skills. Still, if you have fifty to seventy-five thousand dollars to invest right now you, too, can become an instant dog trainer. And with the franchise’s national marketing campaign, you won’t have to sell nearly as much as other dog trainers.
Second, you can attend one of the many schools designed to assist you in living the dream. Perhaps the only difficulty is sorting through all the schools to determine which actually give you what you need. Enrollment fees, quality and duration of study vary widely. Some schools are longtime institutions with good reputations. Others are fly by nighters with no credentials. Almost all offer “certification” to their students. How to Take Back Control with Aggressive Dog Training
If you have an aggressive dog, training is critical. An unreliable dog is a social menace - and an unreliable companion. Your dog may guard its food bowl, growl at men, bully smaller dogs, bark at cars, snarl at your friends or lunge at runners. Regardless of what triggers your dog's behavior, start aggressive dog training right away.
Aggressive dog training helps by treating the cause and by teaching you corrective techniques that will help your dog's behavior. Keep in mind that with a physically threatening, aggressive dog, training might require an expert. Here are some of the steps you will need to take.
Visit the vet. A dog aggression flare-up can result from an inconspicuous health issue in your dog such as a neurological problem, hormonal imbalance, lead poisoning, diabetes or mineral deficiency. Brief your vet fully on the aggression problem so the doctor can test for diseases that can cause the behavior you described. Aggressive dog training will not help much if the underlying health cause remains untreated.
Correct rather than punish your dog- Fear can be overwhelming for your dog, resulting in fear aggression. Do not add to your dogs fears by using punishment to control its behaviors. Correct the wrong behaviors rather than punishing for them. If you forcefully discipline an aggressive dog, training with any kind of correction may make its behavior worse rather than stop it.
Take an obedience training class. Your dog will develop respect for you when you learn to enforce your commands and not let your dog ignore you. Obedience training teaches your dog to follow your instructions and teaches you how to handle your dog so it understands what you want. You will be able to get your dogs attention and reward it correctly, when the dog responds appropriately to your commands. You will be able to control your dog without brute strength if you make obedience training part of your aggressive dog training plan.
Regulate your dogs nutrition. Inadequate nourishment can cause troubling behavior and snap changes in attitude. Make sure you feed your dog a quality, all natural dog food. If your dog eats dry dog food, its aggressive behavior might be made worse by non-food fillers and few or no vitamins and minerals. You can check your brand's rating here. Even some premium dog foods are severely deficient.
Regain Alpha leadership. Often, dog aggression is an attempt to be the pack leader. Your dog may want to be dominant, trying to intimidate you into giving up Alpha leadership. On the other hand, your dog could be afraid because it senses a lack of leadership and attempts to fill the void by becoming dominant. You will not be able to train your dog successfully, let alone work on aggressive dog training, without establishing Alpha leader status first.
Avoid situations that spark your dog. If it gets aggressive toward people, keep it isolated until you deal with the aggressive behavior. Remove toys or other objects that your dog protects forcefully. In general, keep your dog away from triggers whenever you can.
Bring in an aggressive dog training expert. If you are concerned that your dog could hurt someone, turn to a professional immediately. There are trainers who specialize in aggressive dog training. They help correct the behavior before your dog causes harm. Don't wait until it is too late. Your veterinarian can refer you to a specialist that will help.
Do not wait until disaster strikes. Do whatever it takes to keep others safe. If you can't supervise your dog, confine it, either in a dog crate, a kennel or a yard with a tall fence. If you take it out in public, restrain it with a wire muzzle. However, these are temporary fixes. Aggressive dog training will not reduce your dog's strength. If you can't physically control your dog, you have no business owing the dog.
Aggressive dogs are a serious problem. Aggression will not go away by itself. take your dog to obidience training and all the people that you want your dog to be loyal to, they should come as well. you can also train your dog by making sure it is good around family and friends and that strangers on your property are not welcome just make sure he is very loyal to only the people you want him to be loyal to

Demystifying The Modern Myths And Misconceptions About Electronic Training Collars
Electric dog fences, bark collars, and dog training collars have become a popular method for pet owners to control the behaviors they find undesirable in their pet. With prices of these training systems becoming more affordable and pet owners finding them to be safe and effective, product sales have dramatically increased. As the widespread availability and increased sales of these electronic training collars grow, so do many of the myths and misconceptions about them. These myths are often based on misinformation or ignorance of the facts. Unfortunately, many people believe these rumors and miss the opportunity of using a valuable dog training tool.
Myth #1: Electronic training collars are not safe One of the most common questions asked by pet owners is "Will this hurt my dog." When used correctly, Absolutely Not! Today's electric dog fence collars, bark collars and dog training collars are more humane because they only emit a very mild electric stimulation. The "shock" produced by these electronic training collars is not painful, physically jarring or harmful and is nowhere near the level of intensity that some people think. In fact, the electric stimulation is actually a static correction similar to what happens when you rub your feet on the carpet and then touch something. The response is usually surprising and uncomfortable but, by no means, painful or harmful.
The following chart compares the energy discharge of electronic training collars with many common items. With proper training and a good understanding of product use, these electronic training devices are very safe to use in achieving effective results and minimizing risk. However, incorrect use can put your pet at risk to some extent either physically or psychologically. Before using these training devices, pet owners should read ALL instruction manuals and education materials that are included with the product. Since every animal will react differently to correction, you should always begin training on the lowest setting and watch the dog closely to monitor its response. When used appropriately, electronic training devices are a safe and appropriate tool for most behavioral and containment issues that often frustrate pet owners.
Myth #2: Electronic collars can cause burns This myth is not true or even possible. You cannot get burned by a static shock. Electronic training collars are still not as powerful as a static shock from carpeting on a dry day, even when set to their highest levels. Veterinarians often misdiagnose a condition called "Pressure Necrosis", which is responsible for this burn rumor. Pressure Necrosis occurs when the electric dog fence collar, bark collar, or dog training collar is fit too tightly on the pet's neck and/or left on too long. The continued pressure of the two metal probes on the dog's neck, along with the dirt and oils around those probes will cause the skin to break down and die. The result is two marks at the point of the probe contact that look and smell like hot spots or sores, which are often mistaken for burns. To help prevent this problem the electronic training collar should be removed from the pet when not being used. You should also clean the dog's neck with shampoo and the contact probes with alcohol at least once a week. Robert E. Schmidt, D.V.M., Ph.D. stresses that "prevention of Pressure Necrosis is the best treatment. If reddening of the skin is noted, the tightness of the collar should be evaluated." He also urges pet owners to "check for proper fit and irritation on a daily basis."
Myth #3: Electronic training collars are difficult to use and only professional trainers should use them Keith Benson of Triple Crown Dog Training Academy (The largest canine training and behavior center in America) states that "With today's advanced collars that is certainly not the case. Improved technology has made them much easier to use and understand." He also said that "Almost any dog owner can understand the operation and use and will be able to communicate with his dog with 15 or 20 minutes of instruction. It is however important to understand how to use them before you put it on your dog. If you do not fully understand, then seek help from an experienced professional."
Education is the answer! Before making an opinion about the use of electric dog fence systems, bark collars and dog training collars as training tools, it is important to educate yourself and find someone who has had a successful dog training experience with them. When you are training a pet, you need to have as much information as possible. As you select an electronic training collar, make sure you choose one that provides you with instruction manuals and/or videos. Owners, who use the equipment correctly and spend a significant amount of time working with their dog, will see an overall improvement in their pet's behavior.
