Dog Obedience Training Exercises: Developing A Well-Trained Dog
Have you seen the movie "Marley and Me"? If you have, then you've seen how annoying Marley can be. He's the type of dog that any dog trainer will not be too happy to meet. He pees everywhere, chews on the living room set, and jumps on people. Actually, his owner, portrayed by Owen Wilson, even brought him to a dog training class to turn him into a well-trained dog. Unfortunately, the dog trainer easily gave up on him because he was the worst dog she had ever seen. He made a total chaos in the class, so he was not allowed to finish the course. That was kind of frustrating on the part of his owners. Now, if you have a dog like Marley, what will you do? Why not try these dog obedience training exercises to develop a well-trained dog?
Sit
You have to note that your dog must always sit at your left side with his shoulder at your left knee. To make him obey the sit command, you have to first fold the leash in your right hand. Then, call your dog's name and command sit. Push down on his hindquarters using your left hand and jerk up on the leash with your hand. When he does the sitting position right, praise him and give him a treat.
Heeling on Leash
When walking your dog, his right shoulder should be about even with your left knee. Once the leash turns loose, simply call out your dog's name and give the heel command. Walk forward as soon as you can and then give a hard jerk on the leash. Do not drag your dog when you do this. Once you jerked him into position, praise him with words like "Good boy!"
About Turn
When you turn away from your dog, do it to your right to reverse your direction. And as you do it, make sure that you keep your eyes on your dog and then give several short and quick jerks.
Stay
To make your dog stay where he is, command him to be in a sitting position. Afterwards, hold up your hand with the flat of your palm facing him, then tell him to stay. If he does, again give him praise but if not, put him back in position and start again.
Down
Just like in the stay command, you can make your dog obey the down command by putting him in a sitting position first. With him sitting, give the down command, then slowly push on his shoulders and wobble him off balance at the same time. But there's another way to do this. You can also place the leash between your sole and shoe heel. Then, give the down command and pull up on the leash.
So these are just some of the dog obedience training exercises that you can do to develop a well-trained dog. At first, they may seem difficult. But once you tried them and see effective results, you will realize how rewarding these dog obedience exercises could be not only for your dog but also for you.
Why is there a bias against pro dog trainers on YA?
Every time I read a concerning question and I recommend pro training for the dog, it seems to get negative feedback?
To me on this topic you culd compare good trainers to good auto mechanics. There is a lot you can fix yourself, but it comes to the point where it would be more productive, and safer, to let a pro handle the problem.

maybe part of the issue is that just about anyone can become a certified dog trainer. in many places, you don't even have to be certified to be a dog trainer or to operate as one. thats the problem to me right there.
same as with handling horses, there are just as many dog trainers who use approaches that others find disagreeable and vice versa. in the end it seems to come down to whatever works, as each trainer - reputable or not, certified or not - have their own methods. nothign worng with having different methods - but then you see one "trainer" attacking the other because they cannot agree to disagree on what they feel are the correct methods. not everyone agrees or disagrees with the dog whisperer.
this lack of cohesion and continuity in the entire dog training circuit builds mistrust with dog owners who feel, myself included and i have worked with dog trainers and thousands of dogs - that you have a 50/50 shot at best getting reliable assistance, so in many cases, why bother...
the end result is another dog in the dog pound due to human ignorance.

I am all for positive reinforcement training. I agree with you on the Petsmart and Petco thing. This group looks like a something to check out. They have the qualifications and philosophy I look for.
The question people most often ask me is “How do I stop my dog from jumping?” The second most frequently asked question is, “How can I become a professional dog trainer?”
Before making any life altering decisions, I always advise people to first ask themselves not “how” to become a trainer, but first, “why?” There are excellent reasons to join this profession. Then there are not-so-good reasons.
The worst reasons to become a dog trainer are because you want to be self employed and make a lot of money. Or because dog trainers are in charge and get to be powerful people. That you love dogs, although critical to your eventual success as a trainer, is not necessarily the best reason either.
If you come into the trade for the wrong reasons, you may be disappointed, and quickly. I believe the best reasons to become a dog trainer include multiple factors among which are: You love dogs. You have great people and communication skills. You’re a motivated self-starter. You are entrepreneurial with an interest in sales and marketing. You like to teach.

Still, if you have fifty to seventy-five thousand dollars to invest right now you, too, can become an instant dog trainer. And with the franchise’s national marketing campaign, you won’t have to sell nearly as much as other dog trainers.
Second, you can attend one of the many schools designed to assist you in living the dream. Perhaps the only difficulty is sorting through all the schools to determine which actually give you what you need. Enrollment fees, quality and duration of study vary widely. Some schools are longtime institutions with good reputations. Others are fly by nighters with no credentials. Almost all offer “certification” to their students. To receive certification from some schools is an honor requiring much learning and testing. Other schools certify everyone who pays the fee. So when shopping schools, Let the Buyer Beware.

If you don’t decide to continue on the path of becoming a professional, you’ll have beautifully trained dogs. If you do continue, you’ll have an enormous head start due to all that practical experience.
Becoming a dog trainer need not take years to achieve. Becoming a great dog trainer always requires a commitment of time and effort.
