[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate] what kind of dog collar is best for training?
It depends on the breed of dog. Get a book on your breed and find out what they suggest. You can also get on a Yahoo Group that is involved with your breed of dog and see what kinds of success they've had with training. If your city had obedience class, sign up. It's just as much training for you as it is for your dog. You'll learn the right ways to scold your dog, and the right way to make them...and yourself...into a well rounded critter. <*)))><

Dog Training Chewing – How to Stop Excessive Chewing and Save Money
I was surfing the net recently and came across this horrible dog training chewing method. See, this method requires the use of a highly negative training tool in order to stop your dog's excessive chewing behavior. What sort of negative training tool am I talking about here?
Well, shock collars of course! The website claims that this stupid tool effectively renders any other dog training chewing methods "obsolete."
That is absolutely preposterous!
Listen, you don't have to use this tool to stop your dog's chewing behavior. The fact is with proper home training techniques, you can not only prevent your dog from leaving his teeth marks all over your belongings, but you can also "program" him to perform desirable behaviors in near effortless manner.
Also, using proper home training techniques, you can save money because you don't have to hire a professional dog trainer and your belongings won't get chewed anymore. You know, my Lab dog Cheeku chewed on my $100+ toaster power cord and we had to replace the whole unit!
But, this won't be happening to you (at least, not anymore)!
Let me share with you my dog training chewing methods which are very positive. And if you need more training techniques, check out the link below for a clicker course which covers about 30 different behaviors. I've successfully implemented several positive training techniques using this course as my step-by-step reference guide.
Alright! Here's how you stop your dog's chewing habit…
Dogs chew primarily because they are bored and anxiety may be the cause as well. So what you should do is set up an area where he may chew only appropriate items e.g. chewing and interactive toys. Items that aren't allowed to be chewed must be kept out of this area!
This sort of area is vital especially when you're not around to supervise him. And another important thing is to ensure that you leave at least 3 to 5 of his favorite toys in this area.
Now, whenever your dog chews inappropriately, you must promptly stop him and then redirect his attention to his favorite chewing toy. I used a clicker to full reinforce this action. As soon as I redirect his attention, I immediately click the clicker.
Dog training chewing can easily be done using a $2 clicker which you can purchase from your local pet store. No negative tools required!
And if you need a clicker manual with clearly explained instructions, follow the download details link below.
You may be surprised to know that there are many uncommon clicker training methods for shaping desirable behaviors in your dog. Clicker training is not only for teaching dogs cheesy circus tricks like most people think ya know?
There are advanced methods like backchaining and stimulus control for positive behavior development.
[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate] Has anyone had a trainer come into your home to train your dog?
I am thinking about doing that with my 9 month old lab/pit mix. Can you tell me about your experience with it?? Thank you!! thanks to those of you who answered me...I do know that I have to train her, not the trainer... she had been through obedience class when she was 5 months old, and we are consistent with her, but we are also looking into this for a behavioral eval...thanks.
This is pretty common where I live. A trainer will come in once a week and teach the dog a command and you will have to train the dog in following it. Most people who have had that experience have had no problems with it, however, some people wanted to have someone else train their dog and were not aware they would be doing all the training. You need yo understand that and decide if this is what you want.

K-9 Patrols are the New Weapon in the War on Bed Bugs
Bed bugs are making a comeback nationwide and the pest control industry is seeking new technologies to combat the increasingly pesticide-resistant insects. Cutting-edge technologies at both ends of the temperature spectrum include Cryonite which uses a non-toxic carbon dioxide snow to instantly freeze and kill the noxious pests and giant infrared heaters that raise the temperature in a room and bake the bugs to death. The University of Minnesota is working on a trap that simulates a sleeping human, the bed bug's favorite meal.
Perhaps the most popular weapon in the bed bug-fighting arsenal – possibly because of its sloppy kisses and wagging tail – is the dog. Dogs, which have been trained to sniff out weapons, arson, drugs, missing persons, termites and cancer, are now being trained to detect and pinpoint bed bugs and their eggs, helping exterminators target treatment areas.
The average dog has 200 to 250 million scent receptors in its nose. Its nasal membranes cover seven square meters. In comparison, human nasal membranes cover barely half a meter and contain only 5 million receptors. A dog's scenting ability is so sensitive it can smell things that can't be detected by the most sensitive scientific instruments. Depending on the dog and its training, a dog's sensitivity to odors is 10 to 100 times greater than man's.
"A dog's nose is cutting-edge technology," Carl Massicott, owner of Connecticut's Advanced K9 Detectives, told the New York Daily News. "Our animals are 100 percent honest and trained to work for food and love instead of profits." It's the dog owners who are raking in the profits. Depending on facility size and travel time, the cost of K-9 bed bug detection is about $200 per hour. Typically K-9 services provide initial and follow-up detection but not bed bug extermination services. Dogs can help pest control experts determine what areas to treat and in follow-up can indicate whether all bed bugs have been killed.
A trained dog can thoroughly investigate a room and locate bed bug infestations in two to three minutes, less time than it takes a human technician who must rely on visual clues which can require a thorough inspection of the home. Typically, dogs can detect infestations within a three-foot radius but may not be able to narrow it down further. For example, a dog may indicate that bed bugs are under a piece of furniture but be unable to indicate whether the bugs are hiding in furniture joints or floorboard crevices. Dogs are trained to alert their handlers to the presence of bed bugs by swatting a paw or barking. Smaller dogs are favored for their ability to negotiate tight spaces.
Pepe Peruyero, owner of J&K Canine Academy, got started in the pest control business by training dogs to detect termites. A former law enforcement officer who worked with K-9 units in Gainesville, Florida, Peruyero assisted University of Florida entomologists in conducting rigorous scientific tests to determine dogs' ability to detect insects. Those tests confirmed that dogs could detect not only termites, but several other types of insects, including bed bugs, and a business venture was born. Employing the same training techniques used to train drug- and bomb-sniffing dogs, Peruyero was able to develop training and testing standards for bug-sniffing dogs.
Today, business is booming. Last year Peruyero trained just one dog to sniff out bed bugs, but this year he has already trained 15 dogs and has another dozen or so dogs on the waiting list. His is one of only six facilities worldwide that train dogs to detect bed bugs. Training takes five days and includes training the dog's handler. Handler and dog teams must prove themselves in simulated hotel room settings, detecting the presence or absence of bed bugs with 100 percent accuracy before graduation. To prevent dogs from spreading bed bugs while they're working, handlers are taught specific grooming protocols that include brushing, cleaning and drying the dog immediately before and after a job.
Insect detection is a cutting-edge business opportunity. "We realize that bed bugs are on their way to becoming part of our daily lives," said Mary Silverson, vice president of Hunter Detection Services on Florida's Gulf Coast and new owner of one of Peruyero's bed bug-sniffing dogs. Trained pest-detection canines cost around $8,000 and their upkeep, including food, veterinary care, handler's salary and transportation, can range from $80,000 to $100,000 a year. To keep their sniffers sharp, dogs must run through their detection paces every single day.
Bed bugs are tiny, blood-sucking insects that feed on human blood. They are easily spread and difficult to detect as only about 50 percent of the people whose beds they share react to their bites. About the size of an apple seed, bed bugs hide in tiny crevices and cracks. They are most commonly found in mattresses, box springs, furniture, baseboards, carpeting, floorboards, behind wallpaper, and in electrical outlets near the bed. Although bed bugs are not known to carry disease, the itchy red welts they raise and the emotional toll of knowing you're being nibbled on in your sleep can cause serious mental distress. Their slightly sweet scent, which has been likened to fresh red raspberries or coriander, makes bed bugs a natural for K-9 detection.
Well-trained dogs can enter a room and within two to three minutes alert their handlers to the tiniest trace of bed bugs. Dogs can be trained to tell the difference between live bed bugs, dead ones, cast skins, eggs and even bed bug fecal matter. Paired with cutting-edge pest extermination, bed bug-sniffing dogs can perform an invaluable service for hotels, hospitals, nursing homes, colleges and universities, apartment complexes, military barracks, camps, cruise ships, airlines, and anywhere bed bugs might be a problem. The dogs quickly locate bed bug trouble spots, allowing the pest extermination experts to efficiently target and eliminate bed bug infestations. Dogs can also be used in follow-up procedures after treatment to guarantee that all bed bugs have been killed.
The exclusive Jurys Boston Hotel is one of 10 Boston hotels that uses canine patrols to check its 225 guest rooms for signs of bed bugs. In its nearly four years of operation, Jurys has never had a bed bug incident. Only twice in those four years have the specially trained canine pest hunters barked, apparently detecting the scent of bed bugs or their eggs. In both cases, Jurys took no chances. They immediately fumigated the room for bed bugs and burned the mattresses. "At the first sign or suggestion of a problem, our reaction would be to treat the room with chemicals, no questions asked," said general manager Stephen Johnston in an interview with The Boston Globe. Johnston calls in the canine patrol for a bed bug inspection every three months.
While guest comfort may be the primary reason hotels contract for pest control, avoiding potential law suits runs a close second. A couple from New Jersey sued the Boston Park Plaza Hotel and Towers last fall after claiming they were bitten by bed bugs during a two-night stay.
Another couple who suffered a similar experience sued the Sheraton Four Points in San Francisco. It takes just one unwitting bed bug-carrying guest to infect a hotel room. Adept hitchhikers, bed bugs can be carried into a hotel or home on clothing, suitcases, linens and used furniture.
The National Entomology Scent Detection Canine Association was formed to develop and set training and certification standards for bed bug-sniffing dogs. Before you hire a K-9 patrol, ask the following questions:
Is the dog certified?
Can it differentiate between living and dead bugs?
Can it sniff out eggs?
How are the dog's findings validated?
Remember, finding bed bugs is just the first step. Exterminating them is what's important.

Many people are interested in getting into agility dog training - it may be cold outside, but don't stop your dog from getting the training it needs. Even with an American Pit Bull Terrier, dog agility training is an excellent activity that can be fun for both you and your dog.
Dog agility training may start at an early stage of a dog’s life. You can begin training your dog for this sport as early as puppy stage (around four months old).
Although a fun sport for both you and your dog, agility dog training is also a serious competition that is well organized and has many guidelines and regulations. Most experts recommend not starting agility training until your dog is at least one year old, at least not to enter in a competition before that age.
Most dog owners that are serious about their dog competing in agility competitions will enroll him in a training class - at least to help teach him the basics - then work with the dog on their own to enhance what he has learned. Agility dog training is one of the more advanced types of dog training, but it is certainly quite enjoyable for both you and the dog.
There are all sorts of important things you should know before you consider signing up for agility dog training, but the most important thing to do is before starting agility training – have your dog examined by a veterinarian carefully.
You can begin to use Buja boards for motion training. Perch training can also be started with young pups. You can teach a variety of skills, drills, and exercises with four jumps.
In a dog agility competition, the obstacles are arranged in various course configurations as deemed suitable by the competition judge. During the agility competition both dog and handler move from each consecutive course to the next, with the difficulty gradually increasing. With patience and practice, your dog could become an agility "nut" and cover the course with a bark of excitement every step. Obstacles like the A-Frame (which is set to 6 feet high), the Dog Walk (two ramps attached to a cross-walk approximately 5 feet high), and the Teeter-totter challenge the dog in balance and fortitude.
You can really be ahead of the pack and have two sets of eight jumps.
Remember, during the cold winter months - don't give up on your agility dog training!

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate] Dog training: Where did you take your dog for obedience classes?
I'm a DIY kinda person, so course I trained my own dog through the help of many books, movies, videos and advice from other people. He's very obedient and well mannered, BUT am I missing out by NOT taking him to a formal obedience class? He's good with other dogs besides the occasional bark at dogs jumping at him and some larger breeds we cross paths with.
I have him signed up in a couple weeks at a local kennel club obedience class. I know more information won't hurt but will it be beneficial enough? I've just seen too many people take their dog to obedience class without seeing any results, so I'm a bit weary at giving my money to just anyone. This place should be pretty good since they're a kennel club. Any advice or personal experiences.
It costs $100 which is a lower affordable price compared to the average $189 of other places. The local petsmart charges I think $129 and it's not good. Is it worth it?
Thanks.
Being as I taught classes for 30 years, my opinion is probably biased. BUT, I will say this, it only takes me about one heartbeat to spot the differences between a dog that has been through those classes and one that has not. Those differences are not so much the training, they are the socialization. Most of the time dogs that have not been to those classes act as if they had never been let out of a closet before when out in public.

http://www.tcdtc.com/index.htm
I know nothing about choosing an obedience class. I have a 5 month old puppy who seems more stubborn to listen than our other older dog, so I think she needs professional training. Obedience classes in my area seem scarce, so it seems to be this or Petsmart. I'd most likely go check out a class before I decide, but wasn't sure if anyone here had any comment on it first. Thanks.
Looks like a decent place. They show on their website that you can visit the club...Go visit the club, see how they work with the dogs and the handlers.
I would take my dog there.

Not just a dog you love, but a dog you are so close to communication seems psychic? I've had 2. One was the first dog I raised from a puppy. His mother was a Siberian Husky and his dad was a fence climbing black lab. My sister and I raised the puppies and found homes for all of them
This was a VERY long time ago (I'm almost ancient) before people routinely thought about spay/neuter, and way before I became committed to learning all I can about the training and behavior of dogs.
Now I have my 8 year old Golden Gurl, who is my heart and soul. She and I have trained in Obedience and Agility and Rally. But mostly, I just enjoy being with her. I love my other Golden and my Pittie Girl, but my Golden Gurl has a special piece of my heart. Aha! Of course, I'm not a specieist. Cats, too, can be heart animals. :-) Kyra's Mom? She was beautiful. Your tribute make me cry. :-) Here is the tribute my husband wrote for his Heart dog: http://www.thecanineclub.net/
Yes. I've experienced it. Although non-dog lovers can mock those of us who have shared the life transforming experience of having a heart dog (pet).
Those people who aren't open enough to let an animal touch their heart? I feel sorry for them.

whenever I allow her off the leash, off she bolts, & sometimes I spend several hours chasing her(often through other peoples property)trying to catch her to bring her back home. Does anyone have any answers as to how I can stop this, or shops/companies where I can hire an electronic dog training collar as I think this is best way of resolving my problem,as she is big, strong & very stubborn. I live near Belfast in N.I
Your first problem is that you need to work on recall before you even consider walking your dog off a leash. Your dog needs basic obedience. Try a local PetSmart and PetCo or shelter to see if there are any obedience classes available in your area.
If you absolutely cannot afford an obedience class, contact me and I will help you figure out exactly what your dog needs to learn and how to teach it to her.

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate] still having problems potty training?
bought my dog potty pads and odor remover spray she still wont go on the pads and wants to rip them up what to do canot go outside not fully protected has only one se of shots
1. Step 1
Firstly, the puppy should be kept in an enclosure that is fairly small or in a crate during the times that he is "napping" and at night. This is the First step to housetraining. This is because the puppy normally will not go potty in his "bed area" and instinctively he will keep his bed area clean. 2. Step 2
Secondly, at all times when you do take the puppy outside, keep him leashed, and take along some treats. The treats are only for offering to the puppy if and when he pees or poops. The leash should be long enough to allow him to move freely without being constrained by you, so that he has at least a 12 foot or so diameter area to "investigate". 3. Step 3
Thirdly, keep a "watch" on the puppy during the times that he is not napping and is playing or running around in the house. Do not leave food down for him to munch on (see tips below) but do leave fresh water available. Take him outside about once every hour to two hours depending on his age, when he is active. 4. Step 4
The puppy should be taken outside on a regular schedule, every two hours for sure. And EVERY time he begins to go to sleep, put him in his crate, and when he wakes up, take him outside. Keep a "watch" on him. If he begins to run around in circles and sniff along the floor, take him outside. Put him in his crate every night, do not remove him during the night unless he creates a HUGE fuss. If you do take him out of his crate, take him outside, on a leash, give him a treat if he goes potty, and bring him back inside and put him back in his bed. 5. Step 5
Always give a treat immediately and praise the puppy for going potty outside. Begin to use key words to elicit this behavior, words like "hurry up" or "go potty" just as he is beginning to sniff around. This WILL work. Do not play with the puppy or pay any attention to him UNLESS he eliminates. Be patient. If he has been crated for an hour or two, he most likely will go within 20 minutes. Also if he has eaten within the last half hour, he should go within 20 minutes.

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate] INNOTEK dog invisible fence system????
i just bought a innotek deluxe contain 'n' train system for my yellow lab to stay in the yard...it comes with the shock collar part that shocks them when they get to close to the fence...but idk if you have to use the fence to use the shock collar part...has anyone used this system? i got it from fleet farm. is this an okay brand?it was on sale for $90...it was originally like $170
I had the same system years ago. It does two things. Using a perimeter wire around your yard it will contain your Lab ... assuming you have trained him. The training part is used with a handheld remote that will correct him when you push the button. However, if you use the "training" portion while in your contained area you can confuse your dog when he is getting zapped while away from the perimeter of the fence.
I have had the "invisible" type of fence for over 10 years now.
Most of the people who will tell you that they don't work are ignorant about the fences in the first place or they bought one (maybe a junk one like PetSafe and many others), slapped the collar on the dog and then booted him out the door without training him.
The "invisible" type of fence is not cruel like some people on this site will tell you. The shock that it gives is mild (and yes, I have been shocked by it). The shock value is immeasurable. The better type of fence systems collars also give a warning beep when the dog gets near the perimeter well before delivering a shock. With proper training the dog will learn quickly where it can and cannot go. Hence it won't get a shock.
Sometimes a conventional fence is not an option. Either due to the cost of fencing a large piece of property or because some housing developments have restrictions on fences.
Sometimes a conventional fence will not contain your dog at all. He can go over it or under it.
The "invisible" type of fence consists of three things. First is the wire which is buried an inch or two into the ground. This wire defines the outer perimeter of the containment area. You can also block off areas (flowerbeds, pools etc) within the containment area. Some experimentation may be necessary in this. Second is the transmitter which is mounted to the wall indoors and connected to the fence wire, and third is the collar that the dog wears. The transmitter sends out an AM radio band signal that the collar will sense if your pet gets to close to the electronic field. The collar will then deliver a correction. Some of the better ones will give a warning beep prior to delivering a shock. Though it is a strong shock it will not harm the pet in any way. Small marker flags are placed along the inner edge of the field about 5 to 10 feet apart during the training period and removed (every other one) as the pet gets used to the fence.
Huskies are escape artists. We have 14 of them. The only thing that I have found that they can't go over or under is invisible type fencing. Some folks say that it doesn't work on Huskies. They don't know what they are talking about. You can't buy the cheap stuff, like what they sell at Lowe's or Home Depot or PetSmart etc. The best I have found is the Smart Dog 2100 by Innotek. You can find it on line at several sites, discounted for less than $170.00 with 1 collar. Extra collars are about $80.00. The kit has everything needed including 500' of wire and flags, enough to do a quarter acre. Expansion kits (500' of wire and flags) are available for $38.00 and will contain a bit more than an acre. The collars are rechargeable (unlike the "Invisible Fence" and most others where you have to buy the proprietary (one place to get it = expensive) batteries every 3 or so months), has battery backup for the transmitter, run through prevention, waterproof, etc. if you are in an area that has a lot of thunderstorms I would consider a lighting protection module ($50.00). Innotek now owns Invisible Fence brand. Be sure to use heat shrink type splices in the wire if needed. They are available at marine supply stores. Do not use the "weatherproof wire nuts" from Lowe's etc. They will not work for this application. Use an edger to dig the "trench" for the wire. The wire only has to be buried 1 or 2 inches down. The yard will “heal” within a few days normally.
The key is taking the time to train your pet. I have known of people to pay big money to install a fence, strap the collar on their dog and then complain that the fence is junk when the dog blows right through it. Also, you do not mention the breed of dog. Longhaired breeds require a longer contact probe on the collar (these are included with the system above). Training may take awhile, one of ours took 18 months (she was a bit stubborn) before we trusted her, most were pretty good in a month or so and we have one that it only took 3 days! The amazing thing is that we can take the collar off, put them on a leash and when we head towards the perimeter their brakes come on immediately! You can also block off areas of the yard that you don't want them in. When hurricane Isabelle came through we had no power for 3 weeks, the terrain was changed with all the fallen trees, and the underground wire for the fence was damaged and NONE of the kids even tried the fence. As I said earlier, the people who say that it doesn't work don't know what they are talking about. We have 14 Huskies (15 until we lost one over the summer due to medical reasons), all free to run around, contained in our 6 acre yard. And no I am not a dealer ..... just a satisfied customer with 14 hardheaded Huskies most of them rescued as adults. We can leave them outside unsupervised for hours with no problems. However, we do not leave them outside when we leave the house.
It will not keep other animals out including the neighbor’s brats. Neither will a 6 foot stockade fence ... this I learned when I lived elsewhere and was attacked by a neighbors dog in my backyard. As far as people being scared of dogs, well if a 15 to 20 foot barrier field isn't enough, neither would a chain link fence be. Besides, if the pet stays on your property who cares if they are unreasonably scared. As far as a dog running through ... well yes, that could happen, however, with proper training it is unlikely. Huskies have an extremely high prey drive. Where we live we have a lot of wildlife, large and small. The kids will line up along the edge of the field and watch the rabbits, geese, deer etc. They won't challenge the fence. The deer and geese have learned where the kids can and cannot go and will stay just outside "Husky country". Sometimes within 5 feet of the kids. As I said it does work. The key is training. That is the most important part of the installation of the fence.
Some people advocate the “wireless” type of fence. You have little control over the coverage area. The other problem with them is "dead" areas caused by obstructions to the signal by things in your walls, trees and such. Your dog WILL find these areas.
Others advocate tying a pet out “because “invisible” fences are so cruel!” Or “why do you want to electrocute your dog?”, however, think about what could your pet do if attacked by another animal while tied? Where is he going to go to get away? At least with an “invisible” fence or a conventional fence he has a decent chance of evading an attacker or fighting back.
Please note though ..... you MUST not leave your dog out 24/7 with the collar on. You MUST bring him in at night and remove the collar. If you do not remove the collar he WILL most likely develop sores were the probes contact the skin which can become infected quickly opening a whole new can of worms.

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate] How can I make my 3 weeks go by faster?
For the longest time, I have wanted a dog of my own. Recently my parents have allowed me to adopt a puppy from the humane society. (They have their mind sets that a one year old dog cannot be trained to be socialble. Which hurts, because one particular dog at the shelter has been catching my eye the last two times I went. Beautiful, kind dog. But a year old... *tear* )
Anyways, we are waiting until late Nov. early Dec. to adopt, and everyday I am told I am bugging the hell out of my parents with constant facts, web pages, and how to's (I am excited... give me a break). Any ideas how to make these next three weeks go by faster?
Also: Does anyone in the Houston area know if the Houston Humane Society as a holiday policy? Like no adopting 2 - 3 weeks prior to Christmas to prevent abuse?
Go to the library and get some good books on dog care and training, and start training yourself so that when you get your new dog, you will know how to start teaching it basic obedience commands. A dog that has been trained some basic obedience is so much easier to live with than an untrained dog is! The more you learn, the better prepared you will be to make a good start with your new dog.

Whether it is for behavior or obedience training, anyone who wants the best for their canine friend must think about dog training. Obviously the best time to do this training is when the animal is still a puppy. Easier said then done, especially since most people get puppies for their children, which means even less time to get the normal household chores seen to let alone training a new dog.
Enter the Internet, Dove Cresswell and Dog Training Online. Dove Cresswell, who also boasts professional Hollywood North dog training credentials, delivers a 7 lesson online dog training course.
While nothing can replace taking your pup on a morning out to a dog training school along with other dogs and their owners, dog training online is quite a novel idea. Like so many other video courses available online, convenience is the point here and if like a lot of people you don't have the time available or there is not a dog training school close by, then Cresswell's course may be worth taking a look at.
Getting past the initial humorous idea of hundreds of people standing in front of their home computers shouting out commands to a puppy in the corner of the room which no doubt will be staring back at them thinking it would rather be back at the pet shop, may be the first obstacle to overcome.
On a more serious note however, if you can ensure the discipline of taking in the lessons and training techniques and applying them step by step on a consistent basis then the dog training online course is worth its weight in gold for the time, money and effort it could save you. . The course includes proven training techniques in the following areas:
Puppy House & Potty Training Dog Obedience Training Crate Training - Keep your puppy safe and your household belongings safer Walking Politely on a Leash - Avoid those unpleasant walks / dog dragging episodes The Recall - Getting your dog to come when called Good Puppy & Dog Manners and; Special Dog Tricks - Because dogs should have fun too
Dog training online won't be for everyone but Cresswell has provided a free lesson so you can find out for yourself. She also claims it works for all breeds and sizes of dogs.
Although, in our opinion, this is by far the best dog training course available online the onus remains with the owner to be the obedient trainer. The ideal solution would be to make use of a dog training online course such as the one Dove Cresswell offers and still get your puppy to a dog training school.
One thing clearly evident from Cresswell's dog training online course is her passion, dedication and love for dogs. Your dog needs attention, love, consistent and regular dog training and this will require discipline on your part to ensure the perfect canine friendship.

Discover The Amazing Winning Secret To Leash Training Your Dog
There are loads of available ways you can use to train your dog however it's crucial to find one that works for you and your family to ensure your dog is as well behaved as he possibly can be. All great dog training methods rely mostly on how you interact with your dog. And to ensure that you follow through with a successful training schedule you first need to gain your dogs attention. It is fortunate that dogs are innately programmed to submit to a leader, it allows them to follow commands and make training easier.
I will be talking about training your dog with the use of a leash or collar.
Leash training has been used to train dogs and puppy's for decades. The method of training that is most effective is dependent on the dog’s breed and his temperament. All dogs are very different and their personality could be either very easy or very difficult to work with.
Most dogs can be very easy to work with however keep in mind that every dogs personaility can be different. Only you, as the dog owner, can make the decision on what will work with your dog as only you know your dog better than anyone else. You will need to work with your dog, the training is as much for you as the owner as it is about your dogs behavior.
Leash/collar training is the best way to fulfill many factions of dog training, especially in circumstances where the dog must be very dependable. For example, certain working dogs, such as police dogs, rescue dogs or guard dogs, tend to gain from leash and collar training.
In leash/collar training, different levels of force can be used, varying from light modifications with the lead to firmer corrections. The level of correction used should be relative to the situation, as too much correction, or not enough, can prove unproductive.
In a leash/collar emphasized dog-training program, the dog is first taught a desired behavior on the leash. The leash will finally only be used to correct the dog when they don't perform the task upon command. The leash is used to communciate corrections to your dog, corrections that your dog will understand and react to.
It is crucial that you gain your dogs confidence and that they trust you. The dog is considered fully trained when the handler is able to show that the dog will follow a command even if he does not want to. And this doesn't mean that they will listen to you through harsh corrective actions. A leash is the best way to do this type of training.
Remember the leash is just a tool to help you train your dog. You should be aiming to be able to tell your dog what to without the dog wearing a leash and collar.
You should treat the leash as just one tool to get your dog to listen to you, you should also be using your voice and body language. The leash is a training tools and not a punishment device, is you punish your dog with the leash you'll only build up fear in your dog and not trust. A properly trained dog should be eager to obey with or without a leash.

Your dog is considered as one of the most popular around the world. Basically, a dog is loyal to a kind master and due tot his has been thought of as man's best friend. For a dog, class distinction or race is not important. It can be a loyal companion to a master who is either rich or poor.
For the most part of human history, the dogs have been tamed and domesticated. Over the years, this made them all the more endearing to us humans. There are stories that depict how brave dogs served in war or even sacrificed their lives to help people in danger. For example, when Pompeii, an ancient Roman community that was destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79 AD was excavated, archaeologists found some dog remains lying across a child, an obvious effort on the dog's part to protect its young master. There are probably a few million dogs that have been so heroic at the same time give delight to the people who own them.
Fitting easily into a household or a family life is common dog information. The reason dogs can adjust hassle-free into family life is because they thrive on affection as well as praise. Every time a master praises a dog, it gladly wags its tail in response. However, when a master scolds his pet, the dog goes away looking sheepishly and with the tail usually tucked between the legs.
Most people whether in the city or otherwise enjoy having dogs as pets. But for those living in cities, you may want to have a small or medium-sized dog because the larger ones need some exercise over a larger area.
In spite of these good things about dogs, during recent years some dog owners have been criticized for letting their pets soil their neighbor's lawns or sidewalks. There are some cities which made it a point to have the pet owners walk their dogs along sidewalks or street curbs. Dog owners still consider their pets as protection against burglars and vandals therefore protecting both the dog's detractors and owners at the same time.
Any person who decides to own a pet dog should be ready to take care if its needs. Dogs will only stay healthy provided they are fed correctly and groomed appropriately. Medical conditions or needs should not be ignored. If you would like a canine that is well-mannered, training should be in order. Dogs should not be mishandled or ill-treated because they may fight back by biting to defend itself. This is so because dogs, although these have been domesticated, descended directly from ancestors who were hunters. This is good dog information that pet owners should remember. The fact that dogs descended from hunters means that they have retained some of their wild instincts or instincts necessary for survival.
Dogs come in different sizes, colors and temperaments. Just the same way, most dogs can fit into a household without much problems provided you have studied their behavior before buying a pet dog.

There are a few places in the town I live in that take your dog for (1) month and train them to sit, stay, and follow basic commands like that and they also teach them good behavior... not to bite, be aggressive, or to bark without neccessity. As an owner, I have to go visit the dog for one hour on Saturday each week. Other than that, I am not allowed to see the dog.
I don't have a dog right now that needs training, but my chihuahua is getting really old. All she ever wants to do these days is sleep... play a little bit, but primarily sleep. She's not sickly or anything... just old. Anyway, I've started looking into other dog breeds (not necessarily small), and I was wondering about these training programs.
Yes they do work, but once the dog is home you have to be willing to continue the training. We had a dog that went for training and came back GREAT. But we had to work with her everyday after she came home. Sorry about your dog and hope your search for a new dog goes well.

Electric Dog Collars Put Your Pets On Their Best Behavior
The use of electric dog collars has been an effective tool for training dogs for years. It's a proven fact that dogs learn from both negative and positive stimulus. Slapping, hitting, yelling at your dog aren't the best ways to teach them proper behavior though: By introducing electric dog collars into your dogs behavior training, the dog won't be able to attach the negative (minor electric shock) to you specifically.
Many dogs do have excellent memories, particularly where physical or emotional abuse are involved and it isn't unreasonable to assume that hitting or slapping them will make your dog feel resentment toward you and further rebel. Electric shock therapy will get your dog's behavior in check quickly, while they will often be none the wiser that you're somehow involved.
The success of the "Electric Fence" product is well-known for it's ability to teach dogs their property boundaries, to keep them safe. The electrical pulse put out by electric dog collars isn't enough to cause harm to a dog, but causes them enough discomfort that they stop and wonder what's going on. They learn by negative reinforcement that crossing the line doesn't feel as good as standing behind it.
This same time of training can be transferred to a handy remote control that you hold on to. Young puppies may not realize how scary it is for you, or your children when they bare their teeth or growl: The use of a remote-controlled electric shock can quickly cure them of this and many other problems.
Both cheaper models and more expensive ones have equal effectiveness. Pricing differences will depend on the name-brand, battery life and the range of the collar and trigger (either remote or boundary trigger). Over a short period of time your dog will become so conditioned to the effects of the collar they will rarely get shocked.

I`m getting a beagle in a few days, and I want to train it before i do anything. Does anyone know how much it costs to train a dog at Petco? What is the price range for them? I am getting a small 3 month old Beagle, does anyone know how much it costs? PLEASE HELP!
I'd recommend calling your local Petco and ask them. I just completed a class with PetsMart for $99 and it was awesome. However, I'd recommend you pick up the book "The Loved Dog". It has some great info on training and it's all with positive reinforcement. Great resource. I've trained several of our dogs and it's always good to go through a class with a new puppy. Socialization for them and reinforcement for you.

Bird Hunter's Supplies - Must-Have List Of Supplies For Every Bird Hunter
A few things should be on every bird hunter's list before he begins planning his hunting trip. Whether the hunter is looking for geese, ducks, turkeys, or quail, there are a few necessities to make every hunt a success. Some supplies will differ depending on the bird sought after, and many supplies cater to two types of birds, those that live on the ground, and those that fly. A hunter should know which supplies apply to the type of bird he's seeking.
A hunter wanting a challenge who's looking to shoot birds that fly will need a rifle with at least ten cartridges. There is no time for a hunter to pause between shots to load his gun. Also necessary will be a camouflage shirt, and a boat for goose or duck hunting. If hunting with a dog, a decoy will also be a handy tool. In a hunter's off time, the decoy makes a good tool to keep the dog well trained. There are also the basic supplies needed for every hunting trip; a tent, extra clothing, supplies for cooking, first aid, waterproof bags, and a mounting area for your game. The mounting area will be essential for keeping your prizes safe at night from other predators; a mount that is raised above the ground is often the best choice.
A few other supplies, depending upon the bird that is sought, may greatly increase a hunter's chances of success. Bird calls prove an essential tool in any hunting trip. Each call is specific to each bird, so if a hunter enjoys hunting many different species of birds, a different call will be necessary for each. A call, while sometimes expensive, is well worth the money when used properly. While most bird hunters hunt exclusively with guns now, hunting with a bow and arrows was once a popular way to hunt land birds. If a hunter wants to try his hand at this type of hunting, the local outfitter can advise the type and size of arrow to hunt with for each species of bird. There are also many instructional videos available for the hunter that is just starting out. These videos can be an invaluable resource, even to the experienced hunter. Also, for many duck hunters, a boat is essential. While shooting from land is an option, duck hunting from land doesn't often make for a successful hunt. While spending the money on a boat may be difficult, for the dedicated duck hunter, it is his most important piece of equipment. There is no better place to find ducks than on their turf.
The local outfitters store will have all the supplies listed above, with many more to choose from. The employee's at the store are often extremely knowledgeable about their products and can help with any questions a hunter may have.

Aggressive dog behavior is one of a dog owner's worst nightmares. The last thing you want to see in your beloved dog is aggressive dog behavior.
The natural reaction to dealing with aggressive dog behavior is outrage and even panic. So many dog owners yell at their aggressive dogs or hit their dogs to try and get control of canine aggression.
With aggressive dogs, it's easy to mistakes that can lead to big problems. Here are four mistakes you want to avoid you're dealing with an aggressive dog:
1. One of the worse mistakes you can make with an aggressive dog is keeping the dog penned up. Not exercising an aggressive dog is not a good idea!
A bored dog is far more likely to be an aggressive dog. Most dogs have a lot of pent-up energy. Dogs are simply designed to be active. When you don't allow your dog to be as active as he or she wants to be, this can lead to problems.
The best way to avoid dog aggression is to work off all that pent-up canine energy. Be sure you take your dog on daily, long walks. Play with your dog frequently. The more you interact with an aggressive dog in a playful, fun way, the less aggression you'll see.
2. Another big aggressive dog behavior mistake is hitting the dog. Training an aggressive dog requires touch, but not hitting! You never want to hit any dog, but least of all not an aggressive dog. Violence encourages aggressive behavior.
To correct an aggressive canine, pull at the scruff of the neck or gently nudge the dog. Using a firm voice and a specific gesture that telegraphs your displeasure will work too. Your goal in correcting an aggressive dog is to surprise and get across your message. You're not trying to hurt or punish the dog.
3. Being a wimp is a big aggressive dog care mistake. Dealing with an aggressive dog requires you to be the boss. Dogs need guidance. They need a leader. Dog care doesn't simply mean nurturing. It means leadership too.
To establish leadership with an aggressive dog, be sure you're the one in control. Enter a room first unless you give your dog the okay to go ahead of you. Establish that you're head honcho.
4. Dealing with repeated dog biting yourself is a big mistake when dealing with an aggressive dog. If you have a canine kid who bites, you need aggressive dog training from a professional dog trainer. Don't try and deal with a biting dog yourself. The consequences are too dire. If the above tips don't help control aggressive dog behavior, get some help.
Your dog deserves to be well-socialized so he or she can have a happy life. Take steps immediately to deal with aggressive dog behavior.

Protection Dog Training - Vicious Animal or Family Pet?
I was recently in a social setting where I was asked about my dog, Rocco. Rocco is my Rottweiler who has undergone extensive protection dog training. We were engrossed in a discussion about his training and capabilities when we were overheard by another person.
“Oh, you shouldn’t train your dog to do that stuff. That makes them vicious,” was her statement injected into our conversation. I was initially a bit taken-aback and annoyed; not only was her comment unsolicited but it was based on a lack of knowledge. As I thought about it more, however, I came to realize that this is a common style of thinking. There are many misconceptions about protection dogs and protection dog training. Let me dispel some of the myths of protection dogs and talk about protection dog training at its root to combat some of the more prevalent misinformation.
First, let me do a bit of defining. There are many terms thrown around that are often interchanged incorrectly.
Attack Dog- A poorly trained, typically anti-social, and fearful creature. Ineffective except for looking tough.
Guard Dog- A dog that is trained to guard an area. Guard dogs are often used on estates, warehouses, or open areas that need guarding. Guard dogs may or may not be good with people and may or may not have obedience training.
Police Patrol Dog- A dog that is trained to work chasing down criminals. They are trained to be used on the offensive.
Protection Dog- A dog that is trained to be used first and foremost as a defensive deterrent. A protection dog is trained to show aggression on command and turn off on command. A protection dog is trained to attack on command or if the aggressor is not deterred by the show of aggression. A protection dog has high levels of obedience training.
So now let me return to the original statement. Does training a protection dog make him vicious? I understand why many people would assume this. After all, you are training a dog to show aggression, bite a person, and do what is necessary to combat a human. Protection dog training does not, however, make a dog vicious.
There are several styles and methods for protection dog training. At its root, however, there are two instincts, or drives, that protection dog trainers harness time and time again to achieve results. Let’s examine them.
Prey Drive
Prey drive is a drive that most dogs possess, not just protection dogs. A Labrador retriever chases a tennis ball because of prey drive. The local mongrel chases a car because of prey drive. Essentially, prey drive is a dog’s desire to chase and capture a fast moving object. Nothing vicious about it. A good protection dog trainer will harness this drive to teach a puppy to chase a rag. As the puppy grows older he graduates from a rag to a tug. From a tug the trainer teaches the dog to bite a sleeve or a dog training bite suit. All the while the training is approached as a game. As a fun way to use energy and satisfy drive. Basically, the decoy, or guy wearing the bite suit or sleeve, is not viewed as a ‘bad guy’ but as a partner in a fun game. As training progresses, a good trainer will train the dog to discount the presence of equipment and view the person as the prey object. All of this training is done on command only. As training progresses the dog is taught to only respond when he hears the dog training command from his owner. This ensures for safety and control.
Defense Drive
All creatures have some sort of defense mechanism. Dogs have three ways of dealing with an aggressor: fight, flight, or avoidance. In protection dog training a good trainer will utilize a dog’s defense drive to build on what he has learned with prey drive. The trainer will show the dog that in certain situations a person is a threat and can be dealt with using the skills taught in prey drive. In this way, prey drive and defense drive work together. In essence, a dog is taught that when given a command that the aggressor is a real threat and he should use his skills to fight the threat. As with prey drive these skills are taught only under command and with high levels of control and safety.
There are not many dogs capable of this level of training. A dog that can accomplish this is a strong and very confident dog. This level of confidence is what often makes protection dogs safe and good with people. They are so confident that they don’t view people as threats unless told to under command by their owner. Protection dog training often bolsters this confidence as these dogs learn the power that they have and their innate abilities.
So are these dogs vicious? Absolutely not. Their natural drives have merely been harnessed to teach them new skills. I like to compare a well trained protection dog with a well trained soldier. Is a soldier more of a danger because of his training? Many would argue that he or she isn’t. The advanced levels of training turn a soldier into a person who is extremely confident. A soldier is capable of being a loving and caring family member in one setting and tool of battle in another. Just because a soldier is capable of using weapons under one setting does not make that person ‘vicious’.
Confidence is the opposite of fear. Fear is what causes many problems both in dog and human alike. When you combine the confidence and high levels of control in a well trained protection dog, I contend that you have a dog that is safe to be around and definitely not vicious.

Coober Pedy is on the way to nowhere, located in the heart of South Australia's Outback, approximately half way between the South Oz city of Adelaide and the outback oasis of Alice Springs, and hundreds of miles away from anything else.
But for those with a nose for hidden gems, this place is a diamond in the rough. Coober Pedy is actually the “Opal Capital of the World.” And is also its hell hole where temperatures climb so high between November and March the town disappears into the earth for comfort. So far, what the Aboriginals named the “White Fellow's Hole in the Ground” might not sound like a place to drag the kids for a summer vacation. But in fact, it is just that. Coober Pedy is the face of the real Australia -- a small town with all the crazy characters one would expect to find out in the middle of the moonscape; a place where hotels are built into underground caves, golf is played on grassless fairways and fortunes can be made simply by digging beneath your feet.
* Check out the largest opal find in town – in tact and for sale at the Old Timers Mine and Museum. The Painted Lady, in three pieces and weighing between 176 and 220 pounds, is worth about $50,000. It was originally found in 1983, when it was last displayed but has since remained in a secret location until now, when the miner who discovered it decided to put his prize on the market.
* Tour the Moon Plain -- a vast expanse of rocky plains unlike anywhere else that has been used as the setting for such films as “Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome,” “Priscilla Queen of the Desert,” and “The Red Planet,” among others.
* Then there is the Dog Fence-- the longest continual construction in the world. Stretching some 3,200 miles, it begins east of Surfer's Paradise in Queensland and ends up north of Ceduna on South Australia's far west coast. It was originally built to protect the sheep farms in the south from the Dingo (native Australian dogs) in the north.
* A visit to the underground abode of Crocodile Harry may be the order. The great old story teller is all that one would hope to find in this harsh spot. He declares himself to be Arvid Von Blumentals, a Latvian Baron who was forced to leave his country after World War II and claims to have worked as a crocodile hunter in Northern Australia before coming to Coober Pedy to find his lost fortune in opals. His underground digs were featured in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome and the film crew left a singing sculpture out of metallic trash, which they called 'The Orchestra,” for its rattles in the breeze.
* Other scenic highlights include Underground Catacomb Anglican Church at the eastern end of Coober Pedy, made out of materials local to the area. The altar resembles a winch and both the crucifix and the lectern are made out of mulga bush wood. Behind the altar are two air vents. Nearby, the Serbian Orthodox Church is cut from solid rock and detailed in ornamentation.
* Visit one of Coober Pedy's few trees, welded together from scrap iron and on a hillside perch overlooking the town. The graveyard is a site of interest as well, with beer keg headstones for those miners who died too poor to afford stone. And, of course, there are the mine tours where visitors can see the layers of operations and even do some “fossicking” and “noodling” on their own for opal strikes.
It is estimated that more than three-quarters of Coober Pedy's population lives beneath the earth, in domiciles called dugouts, first created by soldiers who returned home from the trenches of France after the First World War. Miners later introduced the idea of living underground in these homes to escape the extreme heat.
Most of the town's hotel, motel and cottage rooms follow the wisdom of subterranean living where temperature maintain at 73 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The Desert Cave Hotel is Coober Pedy's top choice in accommodations and harbors the world's only truly underground bar and gaming room. Rooms are quiet, cool, dark and airy, tombs of cavernous comfort. (Visit desertcave.com.au).
Other properties to consider have names like Mud Hut Hotel, the Underground Motel and Fred & Wilma's And Barney & Betty's B&B. Rooms average $75 to $150 per night.
Getting there is half the fun. Drivers can follow the Stuart Highway to arrive from Adelaide. The highway is a sealed road, which parallels the railway of the Ghan train, which runs from Adelaide to Alice Springs as well as the desert routes of camel drivers of an earlier time. Approximately 528 miles from Adelaide, the drive takes 9-10 hours. But The Ghan railway leaves the driving to others so passengers can relax in cool comfort and enjoy scenery usually only available to the most intrepid of travelers. Trains leave from Adelaide and disembark at Manguri, which is approximately 25 miles out of Coober Pedy and easily accommodated for transfers by the town's hotels and tour companies. The train journey takes approximately 12 hours on its weekly departures from Adelaide to Darwin. For more information, go to gsr.com.au.
