Make Your Christmas Vacation Truly Unforgettable In Whistler

Christmas is nearing. Some may like to celebrate their Christmas at home itself while some would like to go to some other destinations for celebrating Christmas. Do you want to celebrate Christmas this time in a snow filled wonderland while enjoying a number of fun filled activities? Then, the answer would be to visit Whistler.

In other words, this time make your Christmas holidays truly eventful by taking a tour to Whistler - a magnificent four-season resort, nestled between the majestic mountains of Whistler and Blackcomb, and located just about two hours dive from Vancouver in British Columbia and Seattle in Washington.

When you have decided to spend your Christmas vacation in Whistler, it means that you are going to engage in a number of activities, apart from enjoying incredible Whistler Christmas events. For instance, just imagine how much awesome as well as thrilling would it be to journey in a horse-drawn sleigh via the beautiful snowy regions of Whistler backcountry.

Whistler is a year-round playground, providing options to enjoy a myriad of summer as well as winter activities. Golf, swimming, river rafting, canoeing, and fishing are just few among many of the activities that can be enjoyed during summer in Whistler.

During winter, Whistler becomes an incredible skiing destination, with two majestic mountains: Whistler and Blackcomb, each rising up to about 5,250 feet. With more than 7000 acres of skiable terrains, more than 200 runs, 16 efficient lifts including two high speed gondolas, six high speed quads, two triple chairs, five surface lifts, and one double chair - skiing in Whistler is truly unforgettable. No wonder why Whistler has been consistently rated the number one skiing resort by ski magazines.

However, the skiing is not the only activity that can be enjoyed by people touring here to spend Christmas holidays. Endless options are available to enjoy a plethora of other activities such as dog sledding, snowmobiling, cat skiing, winter swimming and fishing, heli skiing, heli-snowboarding, heli glacier walking, bald eagle view, bungee jumping, sleigh riding, and rock climbing with such facilities as the Great Wall Climbing Centre.

When comes to events that can be enjoyed during Christmas, options are truly immense, which among many others, are ceremonies for lighting Christmas trees, dog sledding, village train rides, caroling, reading Christmas-related stories, kids' activities, and much more. It is estimated that Whistler becomes one of the world's busiest destinations during Christmas, particularly the days ranging from the Christmas Day to the eve of the New Year.

Further, in order to make your Christmas vacation in Whistler truly special as well as memorable, many hotels, resorts, and other rental property providers in the region provide superb facilities. Many of them provide superb value packages inclusive of one-week accommodation in a fantastic two or three bedroom (depending upon the number of members) condos or chalets, dining including fresh breakfast and dinner, return flights to Vancouver, facilities and equipments to enjoy Whistler activities, sightseeing, Christmas events, and snowmobiling tour to enjoy Fondue dinner.

There are some service providers rendering Christmas Dinner Party Package in Whistler. In some instances, Christmas packages may be inclusive of skiing tours, apart from accommodation and dining options. Sometimes, packages may cover sightseeing tours to Squamish River Valley to spectacle thousands of bald eagles. Many of these packages can be tailored according to the budget as well as specific requirements of guests.

Apart from hotels and resorts, accommodation choices in Whistler also include mountain chalets, ski in ski out cabins, beautiful villas, and superb condominiums and apartments. Mostly, these accommodation choices are replete with almost all facilities that are available in an upscale hotel.

During Christmas season, many of the hotels, resorts, and other service providers in the area render incredible discount in order to celebrate Christmas in Whistler. However, it is recommended to make bookings for rooms as well as packages early, since last-minute booking may be sometimes chaotic and cost you much.

Likewise, special deals are also offered to those who make early bookings. Since majority of the service providers have their own websites with pictures as well as pricing of the accommodation, this enables you to choose and book an accommodation of your choice and that too even before you reach the destination.

So this time make your Christmas vacation truly special as well as memorable by taking a tour to Whistler.

Are You Interested in a Dog Training Career?

Are you looking for information about a possible dog training career?  Do you also have a sense of community and volunteerism?  If so, then you may consider working with guide dogs for the blind, deaf, and otherwise disabled.  There are many organizations that train and provide such dogs and there are usually many paid and volunteer positions available for anyone interested in a dog training career.

For example, Leader Dogs for the Blind, headquartered in Rochester, Michigan, is one of the first and most respected of these organizations that train and then match leader dogs.  Many businesses around their headquarters are used to seeing dogs in training being walked around inside and out.  Their trainers are patient, understanding, and very involved with their dog training career and take their responsibilities very seriously.  When you consider that it costs about $10,000 for this organization to house, feed, train, and then match just one dog, you understand why!  It's also important to note that not all dogs pass their training program, as some are too skittish, playful, or simply don't take direction well.  One of the hardest parts of any dog training career is having to "flunk" a dog and return it to its original owner or find a new one rather than match it to a disabled person.  However, when you do have a dog finish the training and successfully matched with a disabled person there is no doubt a tremendous sense of accomplishment, knowing that you're going to not only have someone be helped in a significant way for years to come, you also know that this dog will have a loyal friend and companion in their new owner.

To get involved in this type of dog training career you probably need a degree in Guide Dog Mobility.  San Francisco University offers such a program and has been graduating students from this Master's program for years, many of which are then matched to an organization that trains guide dogs and helper dogs both.

Of course you don't need a Master's degree for a dog training career; there are many volunteer opportunities available for anyone that loves dogs, is willing to work hard with them, and has unlimited patience and understanding.  For example, most organizations that train guide dogs need constant help with fundraising.  You may be able to organize and host some type of event that would raise money for them, such as a marathon, dinner, and so on.  You may also find that a dog training career involves taking care of the dogs once they're finished with their training for the day.  Grooming them, feeding them, and playing with them can be a very satisfying way of knowing that you're doing your part to make sure these dogs are well cared for.

Anyone interested in a dog training career is to be commended, especially if you're considering such a career in order to help someone that is blind or otherwise disabled.

Do you Need a Meeting Planner?

Whether your business is hosting a one-day meeting in your office or a national convention at a major conference center facility, the importance of selecting a skilled meeting planner to organize the event cannot be overstated.

The success of your event and its impact on your professional reputation hinges on the quality of the meeting planner you've chosen. Meeting planners are responsible for coordinating the hundreds of details that can go into preparing for any given event, from booking the appropriate conference facilities to orchestrating the event's daily schedule.

Whether you hire an independent meeting planner or contract one through a conference facility, your planner should have the expertise required to take the event to the next level. Gone are the days when "the ability to envision and somewhat meander through logistics of a company meeting or event was acceptable," says Evelyn Laxgang, the International Chairwoman of the Board of Meeting Professionals International, in the Los Angeles Business Journal. "[T]he significance and value of a successful meeting planner has risen dramatically within the organizational structure. Today's planner possesses exceptional visionary and procedural skills, patience, and the drive and fortitude to execute strategic, effective meetings."

The Meeting Planner's Role

Let's role-play for a moment. You're an executive at a company that has scheduled talks with a group of investors. Today is the day of your big meeting. Mere hours are left before the event starts. Would you rather spend the remaining time:
A. Preparing yourself to present the day's opening remarks, or
B. Showing the caterer where to set up the refreshments while making sure the welcome gifts for your group's VIPs have arrived

If you picked option B, you should consider a career as a meeting planner. Of course, if you're happy with your current profession, option A seems like the smarter choice. The meeting planner is someone who can focus entirely on the logistics of the event, thereby freeing you to focus on the business at hand.

Event planning involves managing a broad range of responsibilities. A meeting planner is often in charge of managing the selection of a conference facility, organizing equipment, arranging a speaker, selecting a catering service, and so on. An experienced meeting planner knows how to bring all the elements together to create an effective meeting scenario that runs smoothly and makes a good impression.

How to Find a Meeting Planner

Meeting planners can be hired independently or can be arranged through the site that's hosting your event. Many conference facilities provide meeting planners as part of an inclusive event package. A prime example of a meeting site equipped to set you up with a qualified conference planner is Q Center, the premier Illinois conference facility and meetings site.

Q Center offers meeting packages that include a conference planner, who works with you from pre- through post-meeting. The Q Center facility also makes available professional support from Q Center's on-site technology team and offers a hotline that will respond to any last-minute needs.

During the corporate event planning phase, your organization's meeting planner works closely with a Q Center professional conference planning manager. This arrangement ensures that conference planning is consistent, from concept to completion. The conference facility's mission is to clear the obstacles to productivity so you and your group can focus on your goal. Q Center's meeting planners will do whatever it takes to make a meeting an unqualified success.

There are a number of benefits associated with contracting a meeting planner through a professional conference facility. In many cases, these meeting planners have worked with the facility before. They know the building, the staff, and are aware of the available resources, which leaves them better equipped to respond to your needs. When your conference facility recommends a planner, you are more likely to get an experienced professional rather than someone who works part-time. Facility planners are able to focus their time on your meeting, working on the event from start to finish.

If you prefer to hire an independent meeting planner, the website of the International Special Events Society (http://www.ises.com) features an online tool that enables you to search for event planners by region and specialty. In fact, many businesses are relying more on Internet research than word-of-mouth to help them find a good meeting planner.

To select the right planner, you'll want to look at other events the person has worked on, check references, and consider how their professional skill set meets your needs. Ask whether the person holds any certifications, such as the Certified Meeting Professional (CMP) designation, Certified Special Event Professional (CSEP) or the Certification in Meetings Management (CMM). While not absolute guarantees of quality, certifications show that the person has a certain amount of industry experience and has made an investment to learn the trade.

Here are some tips for choosing a winning meeting planner:
• Check references from other businesses that have used the planner for similar events. This applies even if the meeting planner is recommended by your conference facility.
• Look for someone who specializes in the type of event you're hosting. You don't want someone who plans family functions to organize your important corporate event.
• Consider whether this is the planner's career, or merely a part-time job. This can be a sign of experience and dedication.
• Send the planner a written description of what you'd like your event to be. Then ask for a written proposal outlining the planner's responsibilities and the budget before moving forward.

The time it takes to select a professional who is a match for your business' needs is minor in comparison to the time and effort you'll save later on. Hiring an experienced meeting planner can help to streamline your meeting process and make a lasting, positive impression on business associates. Once you have a top quality meeting planner on your team, you'll wonder how you ever managed without.

Dog Training Ireland

Wheaten Terriers are Naturally Playful and Versatile Dogs

Like most terriers, the Wheaten terriers, or simply called as Wheatens, were originally bred as hunters. Therefore, their physique naturally evolved as strong and healthy. Their hunting instincts have made them agile and alert as most terriers are. However, this breed is more stable and steady as compared to most terriers as they were used as by Irish farmers as all-purpose dogs.

Among the activities that molded their instincts and physical features were herding cattle and sheep, vermin terminators, hunting both in water and on land, and serving as watch dogs that deterred trespassers.

The following are some of the basic facts breeders would really love to know about Wheatens:

Category: Terrier

Living Environment: indoors (highly recommended); outdoors (fenced yard)

Coat: single coat, medium length, silky and soft, wavy Colors: born to have black coats but at the age of two, their coats lighten to achieve the    color of wheat grains

Height: between 17 and 20 inches

Weight: between 30 and 45 pounds

Temperament:

Naturally,

•    they rarely bark especially when it is unnecessary to do so
•    they immediately reflect the moods of their household or those around them.
•    their type requires a great deal of commitment and effort in training them so they should not be given to novice breeders and/or owners

If trained properly, they

•    are generally happy and friendly
•    are easy-going, confident, and deeply dedicated to their family's security
•    can get along well with older children and other animals that have been raised with them or are living within the same household

Breeders should note of the following health issues:

•     Flea allergies
•     Addison's disease
•     Heat stroke
•     PLN and PLE Care and Exercise:

•    They require daily combing to prevent their wavy and thick coat from tangling.
•    They should undergo trimming by professionals at least four times each year.
•    Dry shampooing or even bathing should be done only when it is necessary.
•    Eyes and ears should be checked and cleaned on a regular basis.
•    They should be brought along with family activities such as play sessions, hiking, picnic, and even walking.

Origin/History:

The soft coated breed of terriers, shortly called as Wheatens, originated from Ireland. The date of their existence was obscure but many assumed that their breeds were one of the oldest among other Irish varieties. They were molded as herders, farm dogs, and hunters and terminators of vermin, like the Cairns of Scotland.

From Ireland, they were brought to the US in the year 1946. Slowly they gained popularity as pets and as entertainers. However, the extraordinary appeal of this breed to the Americans at present would not be possible if Patrick Blake did not save its lineage from extinction in1932. They were registered by the American Kennel Club in the year 1973. Though their types have hunter instincts, they can get along well with older children and other animals within the household through proper training and attention. Like most terriers, they easily develop close affinity with family members so they normally appoint themselves as watch or guard dogs.

For professional breeders, why not appoint them as well as your pet especially when you are looking for a playful yet reliable companion and guard dog? To this effect, you can say that what you own is one heck of a dog-a dog that can work and play as well!

Training a Dog not to Bark

When first bringing a new puppy home it is an exciting feeling, I know because I have experienced this myself. However you will soon learn that their is much responsibility that is needed to have this puppy and that the puppy must learn a few things him or herself.

Your new puppy will be quite dependant on you. The way you guide and train your dog will affect the way your puppy turns out when they are older. You are the person in charge of shaping the puppies temperament and behavior habit. If you train your dog, show it what is right and wrong from young as well as teach it different techniques then it will soon learn and be an obedient dog.

However if you do not teach your dog anything and let the puppy walk around the house and do whatever he or she pleases then you will not have an obedient dog. Various things such as house training, crate training, the way your dog interacts with other puppies, leash training and basic obedience need to be taught right from the very start.

Just like a child it is very important to use positive reinforcement and even rewards when training your puppy. It is best to start your training sessions as soon as your puppy gets home. Training sessions should be kept short consistent and both of you should always have fun. It is always best to start off with easy commands such as sit.

It is important for you to remember that you are training a very young animal so you must have realistic expectations and be quite patient. Your puppy will not automatically know how to do a command and there will be quite a lot of mistakes through out the training. Just follow these dog training techniques and you will soon have a well trained puppy.

Dog Training Cork

dog training cork
Is there any dog training classes in East Cork?

I have a 8 week old Samoyed girl and want her properly trained. won't be able to train her in a class till she has had all her shots in 4 weeks time.

Shes a lively pup that loves to bite feet and bark, as in snap to you. Her barking doesnt bother me too much its the biting that does. She has plenty of toys to chew, but she must like my feet more..

just search east cork dog training and you might find one closer to you

http://www.irishdogtraining.com/

you could also contact your local animal charity and they could give you some guidance on training classes in your area

you could try distracting her with toys and treats to get her of your feet.

hope this helps

p.s. if you leave toys down all day the dog will get bored of them and wont want to play with them when you want them to, so you will constantly be using treats.

Give Your Pet Care Knowledge a Boost with Dog Training Schools

Are you a serious dog lover? Do you want to make a career out of taking care of pets? Perhaps you'd like to be a certified pet first aid expert, or the manager of a dog day camp or kennel. How else should you start on your dream, but to check out the dog training schools in your home town?
Dog training schools are always in great demand. In fact, the most popular ones are always fully booked! Sometimes the students are merely pet enthusiasts, eager to learn how to take care of the dogs they already have, and would like to have in the future. But sometimes, the students are serious-minded academicians, ready and willing to plunge into the world of pet psychology.
But these schools are in demand precisely because pet care experts are needed everywhere. Licensed and qualified dog trainers are indispensable to dog owners who breed pedigree dogs, intent on raising them to become champion performers. Dog training schools are also great launch pads for those who are seriously thinking of a career in veterinary science.
What can you get in dog training schools that you won't be able to get all by yourself, off the Internet, and for free? Well, the biggest thing waiting for you in schools is the privilege of getting hands-on experience. You get practical training in things that would remain theoretical, otherwise. Practical training gives you the experience you need, so you are never caught short-handed in case of emergencies on the job. You are able to exercise all your senses and learn how it feels to put your back into your work.
Another thing is, you get to mingle with certified professionals, as well as other pet enthusiasts. Nothing beats being able to see pet care professionals in action, getting to talk to them and sometimes even participating in their basic and advanced exercises. This interaction is the best way to supplement your stock knowledge. Plus, you are able to network with other pet care professionals who may be able to help you get jobs, or further your pet care education.
There may be schools offering distance certification in pet care, via the Internet, which allows you to study from home and just submit proof of your achievements online. But this does not come with the benefits of enrolling in dog training schools and attending classes. If you really want to be an expert, spend time and money on your training: it's worth it!

Dog Training Las Vegas

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]
dog training las vegas

MLM Training Material For St. Louis - The Odds Are Against Us! In A MAJOR Way!

The odds are against us. More than a Las Vegas casino. In fact, the house is stacked when it comes to MLM.

MLM distributors are forced to go with a compensation plan that doesn’t qualify anyone to make any money until around $20,000 in sales volume is moved. As MLM distributors, we are roped into a compensation plan that can only be minimally exercised because the “house” made the rules. And the “house” is our own MLM company.

So how do we counter? How do we make MLM work for us rather than the other way around? How do we increase our UP-FRONT cashflow so that we are making money instead of losing it? How do we shift our “business” into an actual BUSINESS, where it’s an asset and not a liability?

First, change your up-front cashflow by controlling the transaction value. If what you sell now only gets you a small commission, sell something else that gives you a higher commission... or switch to a *High-Ticket* MLM that sells products that allow you to earn $500-$2000 PER SALE. Think about how many small items you would need to sell in order to make $2000 a month?

If you chose your MLM right, you could be making that commission in ONE sale!

Second, when you learn how to market your MLM (through the internet), you leverage a TREMENDOUS amount of your power and time. You generate your own leads, you make sales on the internet that go straight to your paypal account, and you leverage back your power from the MLM company. YOU change your up-front cash flow by controlling the volume of ads that you put out.

Having training from Industry Maestroes is an investment the majority of MLM owners have missed... and that lack of knowledge and lack of training on how to OPTIMIZE multiple sources of cash flow and run your business as a PROFESSIONAL business wo/man has been the root of the increasing drop-out rates in the industry.

For example, it is estimated that your chance of making a six-figure income in MLM is much lower than winning in Las Vegas. Most people in MLM lose money rather than make it, which explains the drop-out rates.

The bottom line is that there are MANY pitfalls along the road to MLM success. And most MLM recruits have not received the ‘road map’ from industry leaders who have made it. We’re not talking about the seminars your MLM company puts on you; those are all contained within the bubble of ONE specific MLM. It doesn’t teach you how to play the ENTIRE MLM field. It doesn’t give you the right perspective as an open-minded business wo/man.

So take this small advice as your first step in the right direction in MLM. Focus on your up-front cashflow and finding ways to MAXIMIZE that. Instead of being roped into your ONE MLM, broaden your market and focus on the MLM industry as a whole. You must have the proper perspective which is this:

Earn Money Up-Front, Lead With Cash-Flow, And Put People Into Your MLM As An AFTER THOUGHT And As Source Income # 4. Don’t wait around for people to join you! Make money BEFORE and after the process! To quote a ‘big-dog’ in the MLM industry,

“You use the cash from your sales to fund more advertising.
You use big pay days to pay bills and to stay in the game.
You use the leads that buy courses from you to join your MLM.
You earn $1,000 to $3,000 before the MLM part even kicks in.”

Success in this industry is ONLY possible when you learn what is going on and integrate the level of knowledge it takes to get there. Success in this industry is only possible when you take power back for yourself and stop playing for only ONE MLM team. Start playing the entire field instead.

Private Dog Training

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]
private dog training
Is private or group training best for my boxer puppy?

I have a 7 month old boxer puppy that is extremely hyper. She goes crazy when she sees another dog or person and starts to jump all over them and I can barely control her. I was just wondering which type of dog training would best fit her temperment. I am afraid that she will betoo distracted in a group training class and will try to jump all over the other people and puppies there...
Wow, awesome answers you guys! I really appreciate your help and I have decided to go ahead and do the group classes as recommended. Thanks again!

First, I'd start with private training. That allows you to become a better handler.

Second, after you've done private training, I'd definitely look at a group class. That's because your boxer is going to have to learn how to be around other dogs (and you'll need to learn to management it).

Third, get a copy of Leslie McDevitt's "Control Unleashed." While it's written with agility competition in mind, the focus is on reactive dogs (ie: your dog). It is a series of practical and hands-on activities you can do with your dog in every-day life and settings to manage this behavior. For instance, there is a game called "Look at That" that sounds like it would be perfect for your Boxer. And I know what I'm talking about--this is because the dog I have now is reactive. We took a CU course based on Leslie's book and I read her book first. It made a HUGE difference for us.

I want to get a german shepard dog?

i live in orange county ca and umm how much do they normally cost and are they easier thn golden retrievers to train thanks
how old do they usually live
a puppy is the age

The lifespan for a German Shephard is a 7-10 years. They are considered to be the third smartests dog behind Border Collies and Poodles. So, they are smarter than Golden Retrievers but they are much more aggressive and terrioral than a Golden Retriever. I think if you know how to train dogs well then you may find the German Shephard easier but for the beginner, the Golden Retriever would be much better because the Golden loves to please.

Dog Training Online - Secrets of the Pros Revealed

The value of learning effective dog training online can be seen on many levels. While the vast majority of us pet owners are well-intentioned, we most certainly are not professional dog trainers. That can mean great frustration when trying to teach our dogs proper obedience and behavior, to say nothing of all of the tricks and commands that we love so much.

If you've ever searched the web for tips and information on how to handle your disobedient pooch, you've no doubt discovered that much of what you find doesn't really help. There is an eBook available, however, that you can download onto your computer and even print out and put in a binder if you like, that uses the same techniques and methods as professional dog trainers.

You can then use that knowledge to train your dog in the comfort and convenience of your own home. There are several benefits to doing this, some more obvious than others. First off it is much, much cheaper to purchase an e-book and train your dog on your own than it is to pay a professional dog trainer. The e-book will cost you around $40 while the trainer can cost you hundreds of dollars.

One of the biggest advantages of dog training online is the very fact that you can train your pet in his own environment. Not only is he more relaxed and comfortable at home, but you will be teaching him behaviors that he will need to perform again in the same location in the future. He will become accustomed to performing the behaviors exactly where he will need to again and again. This makes the training process more effective in the long run.

While different dog breeds have different behavior characteristics it is, in the vast majority of cases, not necessary to seek out dog training that is tailored specifically to any one breed. The exception to that would be highly specialized and intensive training for guard dogs, aid dogs and the like.

Training your dog is largely about training you. Be sure when you choose a dog training online manual that you choose one that makes sense to you, that is easy to follow and understand and has been compiled by a professional dog trainer with a solid reputation. A manual that offers all the information you need in a way that helps you communicate with your pet, will be most effective.

If you are interested in modifying your dog's behavior, for example, training him not to nip your heals or bark at the cat, a well written dog training manual will provide step-by-step instructions how to teach you how to accomplish this.  The same is true if you want to teach your dog commands like "sit", "stay" or "fetch".

Dog training online is only as effective as the professional dog trainer who provides the information. He or she must have the knowledge and experience necessary and the ability to convey it to the reader. With the right help, you can train your dog to be an enjoyable companion. A well trained dog not only makes for a happier owner, it makes for a happier, better adjusted dog as well.

Dog Training In Houston

How can I make my 3 weeks go by faster?

For the longest time, I have wanted a dog of my own. Recently my parents have allowed me to adopt a puppy from the humane society. (They have their mind sets that a one year old dog cannot be trained to be socialble. Which hurts, because one particular dog at the shelter has been catching my eye the last two times I went. Beautiful, kind dog. But a year old... *tear* )

Anyways, we are waiting until late Nov. early Dec. to adopt, and everyday I am told I am bugging the hell out of my parents with constant facts, web pages, and how to's (I am excited... give me a break). Any ideas how to make these next three weeks go by faster?

Also: Does anyone in the Houston area know if the Houston Humane Society as a holiday policy? Like no adopting 2 - 3 weeks prior to Christmas to prevent abuse?

Go to the library and get some good books on dog care and training, and start training yourself so that when you get your new dog, you will know how to start teaching it basic obedience commands. A dog that has been trained some basic obedience is so much easier to live with than an untrained dog is! The more you learn, the better prepared you will be to make a good start with your new dog.

Knoodling In The Aussie Outback

Coober Pedy is on the way to nowhere, located in the heart of South Australia's Outback, approximately half way between the South Oz city of Adelaide and the outback oasis of Alice Springs, and hundreds of miles away from anything else.

But for those with a nose for hidden gems, this place is a diamond in the rough. Coober Pedy is actually the  “Opal Capital of the World.” And is also its hell hole where temperatures climb so high between November and March the town disappears into the earth for comfort. So far, what the Aboriginals named the “White Fellow's Hole in the Ground” might not sound like a place to drag the kids for a summer vacation. But in fact, it is just that. Coober Pedy is the face of the real Australia -- a small town with all the crazy characters one would expect to find out in the middle of the moonscape; a place where hotels are built into underground caves, golf is played on grassless fairways and fortunes can be made simply by digging beneath your feet.

* Check out the largest opal find in town – in tact and for sale at the Old Timers Mine and Museum. The Painted Lady, in three pieces and weighing between 176 and 220 pounds, is worth about $50,000. It was originally found in 1983, when it was last displayed but has since remained in a secret location until now, when the miner who discovered it decided to put his prize on the market.

* Tour the Moon Plain -- a vast expanse of rocky plains unlike anywhere else that has been used as the setting for such films as “Mad Max: Beyond the Thunderdome,” “Priscilla Queen of the Desert,” and “The Red Planet,” among others.

* Then there is the Dog Fence-- the longest continual construction in the world. Stretching some 3,200 miles, it begins east of Surfer's Paradise in Queensland and ends up north of Ceduna on South Australia's far west coast. It was originally built to protect the sheep farms in the south from the Dingo (native Australian dogs) in the north.

* A visit to the underground abode of Crocodile Harry may be the order. The great old story teller is all that one would hope to find in this harsh spot. He declares himself to be Arvid Von Blumentals, a Latvian Baron who was forced to leave his country after World War II and claims to have worked as a crocodile hunter in Northern Australia before coming to Coober Pedy to find his lost fortune in opals. His underground digs were featured in Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome and the film crew left a singing sculpture out of metallic trash, which they called 'The Orchestra,” for its rattles in the breeze.

* Other scenic highlights include Underground Catacomb Anglican Church at the eastern end of Coober Pedy, made out of materials local to the area. The altar resembles a winch and both the crucifix and the lectern are made out of mulga bush wood. Behind the altar are two air vents. Nearby, the Serbian Orthodox Church is cut from solid rock and detailed in ornamentation.

* Visit one of Coober Pedy's few trees, welded together from scrap iron and on a hillside perch overlooking the town. The graveyard is a site of interest as well, with beer keg headstones for those miners who died too poor to afford stone. And, of course, there are the mine tours where visitors can see the layers of operations and even do some “fossicking” and “noodling” on their own for opal strikes.

It is estimated that more than three-quarters of Coober Pedy's population lives beneath the earth, in domiciles called dugouts, first created by soldiers who returned home from the trenches of France after the First World War. Miners later introduced the idea of living underground in these homes to escape the extreme heat.

Most of the town's hotel, motel and cottage rooms follow the wisdom of subterranean living where temperature maintain at 73 to 77 degrees Fahrenheit. The Desert Cave Hotel is Coober Pedy's top choice in accommodations and harbors the world's only truly underground bar and gaming room. Rooms are quiet, cool, dark and airy, tombs of cavernous comfort. (Visit desertcave.com.au).

Other properties to consider have names like Mud Hut Hotel, the Underground Motel and Fred & Wilma's And Barney & Betty's B&B. Rooms average $75 to $150 per night.

Get There

Getting there is half the fun. Drivers can follow the Stuart Highway to arrive from Adelaide. The highway is a sealed road, which parallels the railway of the Ghan train, which runs from Adelaide to Alice Springs as well as the desert routes of camel drivers of an earlier time. Approximately 528 miles from Adelaide, the drive takes 9-10 hours. But The Ghan railway leaves the driving to others so passengers can relax in cool comfort and enjoy scenery usually only available to the most intrepid of travelers. Trains leave from Adelaide and disembark at Manguri, which is approximately 25 miles out of Coober Pedy and easily accommodated for transfers by the town's hotels and tour companies. The train journey takes approximately 12 hours on its weekly departures from Adelaide to Darwin. For more information, go to gsr.com.au. For time-bound clients that want a taste of this region, Regional Express Airlines offers flights from Adelaide to Coober Pedy five days a week.
