Basically I don't want my dog to go around mauling people but I would like to train her to respond to certain commands if I need her to be aggressive and to also show her to be friendly when I want her to be. Start accustoming Duchess to being handled for grooming and veterinary care when she's a puppy. Take her in your lap and gently brush her. Speak softly to her, saying things such as "That feels good, doesn't it, Duchess?" Lift up her ears and look inside them. Run your fingers around the inside of her lips. Stroke her paws and then pick them up and hold them. Although most dogs hate having their feet handled, they can learn to tolerate it if you start early enough and are persistent. A good time for these handling sessions is while you're watching TV.

At first, handle your dog for only a minute or two at a time, then gradually extend the length of time you spend grooming her. When she's cused to having your fingers in her mouth, introduce her to a soft dog toothbrush. You'll be thankful for all of your prep work when her coat grows out and needs frequent combing or when she needs a bath.

Sitting Pretty
The sit command is one of the easiest to teach and one of the most useful. Pups can learn it at an early age, so it's a great way to accustom them to the training process. Requiring your dog to sit is also a great way to reinforce your status as the leader.

The first thing Duchess should learn is that she gets attention when she sits. Not when she jumps up. Not when she runs away. When she sits. Because sit is often the first command dogs learn, it seems to stick more firmly in their brain, and they often respond to it more readily than to any other command. That's why it has so many great uses.

To teach the sit command, start by getting Duchess's attention. Show her a treat and slowly move it upward so she has to raise her head to see it. Most dogs naturally move into a sitting position when they do this. If Duchess isn't quite there, gently push down on her rump while moving your hand back over her head to give her the idea. When she's in position tell her to sit and give her the treat. Practice for only a couple of minutes (puppies have a short attention span) and repeat several times throughout the day. Soon Duchess will recognize that your uplifted hand signals the sit command even if you're not holding a treat.

Practice using the sit command in different situations once Duchess associates it with the action of sitting. Teach her to sit and wait before you pet her, before you feed her, and before you put her leash on. If you're out in the yard and she wanders away from you tell her to sit so she learns to respond even when you're at a distance. This won't be helpful if she's at risk of being hit by a car, but it can be useful in a more controlled situation when you simply want her to wait for you. (A leash, of course, is the best way to keep a dog under control and should always be used in unfamiliar or unfenced areas.)

To teach the wait or stay command, place your dog in a sit. Hold up your hand, with the flat of your palm toward the dog's face, and tell her to wait or stay (whichever you prefer); then back up a few steps. If your dog remains where she is, praise her. Gradually increase the amount of time she must wait before receiving praise or a reward. If she moves out of place, don't punish her, simply put her back in position and start over.

Jumping Up
Jumping is one of the most common complaints people have about their dogs. It may be cute when a puppy does it, but a couple of months later, when her size has doubled, it can become a problem. You don't want Duchess knocking down Aunt Mary or Baby Sue with her exuberant greeting. Replace jumping behavior as soon as possible with the sit command.

Teaching a dog not to jump up doesn't require any harsh tactics. Ignore anyone who tells you to knee the dog in the chest or push her away. Instead, simply pivot so she misses you. Then give the sit command. When she complies, give her a lot of praise or a treat. Repeat this every time she tries to jump up and insist that other people do so as well.

Often, especially with toy breeds, people say that they don't mind, and refuse to participate in the training process. If you have a large dog, that's not really an option because you don't want to run the risk of someone being injured, even inadvertently. It's not so bad with a toy breed, but remember that even small dogs can snag your stockings or scratch your legs when they jump up. It's better if you teach them the same good manners you would teach a larger dog.

Collect your puppy early in the morning; this will enable you to have several rehearsals for bedtime. It will help him settle and get used to his new surroundings. If you carry out the following he will not cry during the night and it will prevent separation anxiety for the rest of his life...
If you bring your dog home by car take someone with you who will do the driving and let him lie on your lap, (not the driver, the puppy) this will help him to recognise you as his best friend. Do not let him into the house until he has been into the yard/garden and when you put him down he will probably urinate. If he does, use a phrase like “get one” and use this phrase every time he urinates. Eventually he will pee on command. After he has a pee let him wander around your yard/garden, if it’s not fenced keep him on a lead. After this take him into the house.
If you do the following you will be able to potty train your dog and prevent separation anxiety. Dogs get separation anxiety if they are left alone. Hopefully you realise that you cannot leave your puppy all day, some dogs get very stressed if they are left alone for just a short time. You cannot take them shopping or to the dentists, consequently YOU MUST TRAIN THEM TO BE CONFIDENT WHEN THEY ARE LEFT AND PREVENT SEPARATION ANXIETY.
Puppies need a lot of sleep and he will be tired after sniffing around the garden, he will need to rest and sleep in peace. Do the following to ensure that he does not suffer from separation anxiety and does not miss his mum and his litter mates. This is also vital if you want your dog to be clean and potty trained.
Put your dog in a separate room if possible, then go out of this room and close the door. Open the door immediately and go into the room again, ignore your dog whilst pretending to clean the counter tops or pretend to do something else for a very short time. Go out of the room and immediately go back in again, keep doing this and gradually increase the amount of time which you stay on the other side of the door.
Timing is vital and you must get back into the room BEFORE YOUR PUPPY CRIES. Eventually your puppy will go to sleep and will be convinced that you are just on the other side of the door. When you know that he is asleep stop going into the room, however you MUST LISTEN FOR HIM WAKING UP.
When you know that he is awake, go into the room lift him up and CARRY HIM into the garden for a pee and whilst he is doing this say “get one” and praise him profusely. Puppies need feeding about four times a day, although he may have a pee before his feed you should also take him out again afterwards. You must always take him out when it wakes up and after he has had food or drink. It’s also a good idea to let him explore your yard/garden afterwards and play with him. Before you go to bed, take him out again and when you wake up take him out immediately

It is vital that you continue with the door thing for the first few days. This will stop him crying during the night because he will think that you are close by. To ensure that you have a happy puppy, try to devote all of your time to him for the first two weeks. This will help with potty training, however he will not have any control for the first few months and he will pee during the night... To help him, use newspaper that you have rubbed in one of the pees that he has done outside and leave several layers of newspaper on the floor. Hopefully he will toilet on the newspaper during the night.
You should also encourage visitors as this will help with his socialisation. Later when you able to take him out, walk around supermarket car parks and the perimeter where there are lots of people. Stand at the school gates and watch the children coming out and you MUST take him to puppy classes to get used to other dogs.

Aggressive dog behavior is one of a dog owner's worst nightmares. The last thing you want to see in your beloved dog is aggressive dog behavior.

The natural reaction to dealing with aggressive dog behavior is outrage and even panic. So many dog owners yell at their aggressive dogs or hit their dogs to try and get control of canine aggression.

With aggressive dogs, it's easy to mistakes that can lead to big problems. Here are four mistakes you want to avoid you're dealing with an aggressive dog:

1. One of the worse mistakes you can make with an aggressive dog is keeping the dog penned up. Not exercising an aggressive dog is not a good idea!

A bored dog is far more likely to be an aggressive dog. Most dogs have a lot of pent-up energy. Dogs are simply designed to be active. When you don't allow your dog to be as active as he or she wants to be, this can lead to problems.

The best way to avoid dog aggression is to work off all that pent-up canine energy. Be sure you take your dog on daily, long walks. Play with your dog frequently. The more you interact with an aggressive dog in a playful, fun way, the less aggression you'll see.

2. Another big aggressive dog behavior mistake is hitting the dog. Training an aggressive dog requires touch, but not hitting! You never want to hit any dog, but least of all not an aggressive dog. Violence encourages aggressive behavior.

To correct an aggressive canine, pull at the scruff of the neck or gently nudge the dog. Using a firm voice and a specific gesture that telegraphs your displeasure will work too. Your goal in correcting an aggressive dog is to surprise and get across your message. You're not trying to hurt or punish the dog.

3. Being a wimp is a big aggressive dog care mistake. Dealing with an aggressive dog requires you to be the boss. Dogs need guidance. They need a leader. Dog care doesn't simply mean nurturing. It means leadership too.

To establish leadership with an aggressive dog, be sure you're the one in control. Enter a room first unless you give your dog the okay to go ahead of you. Establish that you're head honcho.

4. Dealing with repeated dog biting yourself is a big mistake when dealing with an aggressive dog. If you have a canine kid who bites, you need aggressive dog training from a professional dog trainer. Don't try and deal with a biting dog yourself. The consequences are too dire. If the above tips don't help control aggressive dog behavior, get some help.

Your dog deserves to be well-socialized so he or she can have a happy life. Take steps immediately to deal with aggressive dog behavior.
