Dog Obedience Training - How to Stop Puppy Biting

Dog Obedience Training - How to Stop your Puppy Biting

There are a number of reasons why puppies and dogs start biting or showing aggression. Below we have listed some of the reasons why this behavior may start happening.

Play - Puppy biting is a common aspect of play when they are surrounded by their litter mates. However, it's fine that they exhibit this behavior in the litter with their brothers and sisters but it becomes a problem when this behavior continues when they arrive home and start biting members of the family.

Fear - Biting problems become more of an issue as your puppy gets older and bigger. The more fearful he is may lead to him to start biting when he is unsure of situations. The problem escalates when he realizes that biting or snapping works and gets him out of this fearful situations - this is when puppu biting becomes a big problem.

Dominance - Your puppy may be trying to prove himself as the leader of the pack (the alpha male) - biting is a method that some puppies use to show their dominance and command of the situation.

Dog Food Agression - Puppies that have come from a rescue homes and/or experienced a lack of food in the past may start exhibiting guarding behavior around their dog food. It goes back to when dogs were in the wild and would guard their prey after hunting and killing it.

Prevention & Cure

  1. Start by learning how to understand canine body language as this will teach you how to predict negative behavior and to prevent it from happening in the first place. For example if your puppy likes to bite at your legs, skirt or trousers put him in a play-pen or crate as this will get him used to you walking past and he won't be able to do anything and before long he will stop the biting and negative behavior.

  2. Use basic and more advanced dog obedience training techniques to train your dog or puppy to respond to your commands - this will not only stregnthen your bond and relationship but it will also train your puppy to understand what is appropriate and what isn't.

  3. Purchase some toys to keep your puppy stimulated - this will train your puppy to understand what is acceptable to bite and what isn't.

  4. If your puppy is still biting - when he nips you make a loud noise as if it really hurt - then stop the play-time stand up and ignore him (this will tell your puppy that biting means with the end of play).

  5. Start puppy socialization from an early age and the more your puppy gets used to fearful sitautions the less likely he will display negative behavior such as biting.
