Your best bet would be to confine the dog to a very small area (crates are ideal) where he only has room to lay down. Dogs don't like to soil their bedding (until they've been taught they have no other choice). Take him outside frequently and offer lots of praise when he potties.
You might want to tether him to you while he is loose in the house. That way, you won't miss him sneaking off to potty. If he gives any indication of having to go (sniffing, pacing, whining, circling, etc.), try a trip outside.
Potty training adult dogs is typically easier than a pup. They have more blatter control and can usually pick things up quick.
Be sure to not scold him in any way when he does go in the house. Just make a mental note to watch him better. :)

I have taken to throwing water on the dog over the fence everytime it barks. that worked on one dog but this other one form another neighbor is too far for me to get it wet. Besides, i might hit my neighbor by accident and there might be some more trouble than i want at this time.

Miniature Horses: The Tiny Horse That Is Hugely Popular
No bigger than a large dog, the American Miniature Horse is less then 34" tall at the withers and weighs between 150 to 250 pounds. This tiny equine is popular in many countries and is known by several names such as the American Miniature Horse, Miniature Toy Horse, Miniature Pony, Falabella or Falabella Miniature Horse, Guide Horse, Minis and Dwarf Horse. They have been bred for centuries by selectively breeding horses and ponies of diminutive size. In prehistoric times, tiny horses were likely the products of having to survive harsh climates with limited food. Today, genetics has made it possible to breed specifically for size.
In 1879, the Falabella family of Argentina bred small horses found on the Pampas south of Buenos Aires, where these undersized horses have since been known as Falabellas. But long before that, many breeders in different countries were trying to create miniaturized horses.
As early as the 1600s, they were being bred as pampered pets for European kings and queens. Later they were used in the coal mines in the English Midlands, northern Europe. The first mention of a small horse being imported into the United States was in 1888. Some of these mine horses were brought in from Holland, West Germany, Belgium, and England in the 19th century and used in some Appalachian coal mines as recently as 1950 since the tunnels were small and full-sized horses were just too big to fit.
Small horses, European minis, ponies, and Falabella miniatures, all went into the breeding of the American Miniature Horse to produce a well-proportioned animal. However, depending on parentage, they may have characteristics of Shetland Ponies, Arabians, Hackney Ponies, Thoroughbreds, and others. This has resulted in a wide range of body types and every color and pattern in the equine palette. In fact, any color or marking pattern with any eye color is equally acceptable.
But over the past 100 years there has been disagreement regarding the origins of the genetic characteristics of Miniature Horses. Some tiny breeds, such as the Falabella horses of Argentina, were developed in a totally separate environment from the tiny European horses of the eighteenth century, and independent breeding programs have been established on every continent on the globe.
Some have noticed that miniature horse dwarfism and congenital defects are more prevalent in the USA than in foreign countries. American breeders claim that because the horses were bred exclusively for size, dwarfism traits have became commonplace in them, while overseas breeders have noted that the rate of dwarfism is less in those countries that have rejected the breeding of tiny horses or ponies with undesirable dwarf characteristics, or achondroplasia, as it is called in humans.
A dwarf is different from a miniature. Its teeth often don't match up properly; the head is too big for its neck; and it may have a pot belly. A horse with some dwarf traits may be perfectly healthy and be a good pet, but others have problems with bones and teeth that make life painful for them. Dwarfs cannot be registered as miniature horses, but as breeding improves, fewer dwarfs are born.
However, it is very clear that dwarf genes have deliberately been introduced into American Miniature horses and some "famous" miniature stud horses has obvious equine dwarfism characteristics. Bond Tiny Tim (19" tall, AMHA Registration number R 00015P) was said to have many dwarfism-related issues, yet he was bred extensively, passing-on potentially crippling genetic mutations to thousands of his descendents throughout the USA, therefore the Dwarf gene is floating around in many bloodlines today, and it is difficult to locate as the gene has not been identified.
Founded in 1978, in Arlington, Texas, the American Miniature Horse Association (AMHA) has registered nearly 160,000 horses and has more than 12,000 members in 37 countries and provinces. The AMHA's goal is to promote a standard of excellence and purity in the Miniature and to that end; they closed the stud book on December 31, 1987, so that only horses with AMHA-registered parents can be registered. Additionally, a foal is eligible to be temporarily registered as soon as it is born and if it is no taller than 34 inches when it reaches the age of 5 years, it can be permanently registered as a Miniature Horse. To ensure the accuracy of pedigrees, all foals born after December 31, 1995 must be blood-typed and/or DNA-tested before any of their offspring can be registered.
Practically anything you can do with a regular size horse can be done with a Miniature, except for riding. Minis should not be ridden by anyone over 60 pounds. They can be shown in classes at halter, in-hand hunter/jumper, obstacle courses, showmanship, single pleasure driving, country pleasure driving, roadster, multi-hitch driving, fine viceroy, liberty, costume conformation, and games. Outside the show world, many owners drive their Minis hitched to carts, wagons, or sleighs singly or in teams. A trained Miniature driving horse can pull two adults for ten miles with no difficulty. Children 3 to 4 years old and up routinely drive at home, in parades and in shows. People even let them come into the house to watch TV with them.
Miniature Horses are very good for visiting shut-ins; senior citizens in retirement homes that have pet visitation hours; and many have been trained as guide animals to assist the blind or the hearing impaired. They are also good for people with health problems or physical disabilities that can make it impossible to handle or ride a full-sized horse, but they can learn to drive a cart and enjoy their horses.
The natural gaits of the Miniature Horse are the walk, trot, canter, and gallop, but other gaits are easily taught, especially when the horses are used for driving carts. For example, the Collected Trot is rhythmic and the horse should look like it could keep this gait up all day; and The Working Trot is brisk and snappy without excessive speed. This gait should be animated and showy with a long stride that makes the horse appear to float off the ground when all 4 feet actually are off the ground.
A Miniature Horse enjoys human company and does not fear strangers, in fact, they are quite eager to please their handlers possibly because they get handled so much. A newborn weighs about 20 pounds and is between 16 and 21 inches tall, and it is easy to pick one up and carry it around. It is hard to resist hugging a fluffy foal as if it were a teddy bear. A small child may be intimidated by a normal sized horse, but that same child will be eager to hug a Miniature foal.
There seems to be a discrepancy in the Miniature's disposition. Breeders may say they are gentle and affectionate so that they can make more sales, but many owners complain they have been bitten by aggressive Minis. Without knowing the circumstances of these complaints, the horse may have been abused by the previous owner; or. it may be simply a case of not being gelded or spayed.
All stallions of all breeds can be aggressive, but gelding is a simple, inexpensive operation that can resolve territorial aggression and a hormone driven lack of manners. Even when no stallion is near, a mare's estrus (heat) cycles can cause unpredictable behavior - the equine equivalent of PMS. Spaying can resolve this also.
Horses do not possess complex reasoning skills, but Miniature Horses are quite intelligent and excel at tasks that require long-term memory skills. It has been shown that the more a horse learns, the greater their capacity for future learning, and with proper training, a horse can be taught to do almost anything, such as sit, lie down, pull up a blanket, turn out the light and go to sleep, or even catch a Frisbee.
The Guide Horse Foundation trains Minatures as Guide Horses for the Blind and part of the basic training includes learning 23 voice commands. Additionally they can be reliably housebroken and trained to paw at the door or make nickering noises. The American's with Disabilities Act guarantees the right of any service animal to use public transportation, so it should be not unusual to see a Guide Horse on an airplane, riding in a taxi, or on an escalator.
Miniature Horses thrive in pastures, and one acre can support as many as three Miniature Horses, but hey are prone to overeat. Ideally they should not share their pasture with the larger breeds since one kick or bite could significantly injure the Mini.
Since owning a Miniature Horse can cost 1/10th that of maintaining a large horse and they can become as much a part of the family as a dog or a cat, they have become extremely popular as companion animals that live 20 to 30 years.

Will Siberian Husky brothers (8 mos old) be alright if left outdoors all year round (NJ)? This will be their first winter and I am concerned that the overnight temps and overall cold weather will hurt them. They are not walked regularly, not socialized, not allowed indoors, no training involved (obedience, potty, etc.) - just kept outdoors under deck - concrete ground (due to digging), fenced in area. Not large space. Little human contact. No exercise.
My brother - 1st time dog owner - purchased these 2 pups from birth. Did no research, has no idea what he's doing and I'm just trying to see that he does as little damage as possible to these 2 beautiful dogs before they end up in a shelter.

The dogs can survive the temperatures. But, they are not living a life. Living includes being with their human family, being loved, socialized, trained, and enjoyed.

How To Find A Search And Rescue Dog Training School
There are many things dogs can be trained to do but, of all the tasks a working dog can perform, search and rescue ranks the highest for needing qualified, professional trainers. A Search and Rescue (SAR) dog's performance, quite literally, can determine life or death to a human in need.
As shocking as it may sound, there is no set of standards for rescue dog training. Subsequently, rescue clubs, teams, and individuals emerge as trainers, when, in fact, they may know little, or nothing at all, about training a SAR dog. Attending seminars and reading books on the subject are worthwhile endeavors, but they do not constitute being a SAR dog trainer. Sadly, in a large percentage of cases, this is an assumption not only made, but followed, and replicated. In some cases, those touting themselves as SAR dog trainers scarcely have enough knowledge to teach a dog simple parlor tricks, let alone promptly and accurately scenting or tracking skills, where a human life hangs in the balance.
Even when the topical qualifications are in place, this is no substitute for failing to research the validity of those qualifications. You will hear the term "qualified instructor" often from those with police/military backgrounds. While this sounds impressive, keep in mind that there is no "qualification" standard to begin with, so the very title is misleading. Further, there may be a very good reason that the individual is no longer training/handling outside of the police/military venues. That reason may be a desire for work in the private sector, or it could be indicative of poor performance.
Now, I'm not trying to paint a bleak picture; there are a number of incredible SAR dog trainers out there. All of these great instructors hold one thing in common: they can bear your scrutiny with flying colors. If you're making the huge step towards training your dog for SAR, then you really need to make the right choices. Here are the top things to consider when choosing a SAR dog trainer:
1. Experience. There is no substitute and there is no better gauge of a trainer's value. Look for trainers who have years of experience in a wide variety of disciplines, not just SAR. Demonstrated ability, in more than a single focus, means that the trainer will be able to administer a wide variety of training methods to accomplish the end goal. Other potential disciplines to look for include: agility, obedience, hunting, or herding. This experience is easily verified by titles such as: Companion Dog (CD, CDX) Agility Dog (AD, MACH, NATCH), Schutzhund (I, II, II) to name a few.
2. Actual SAR experience is a must. SAR dogs perform a number of tasks that your instructor MUST have real-world experience with. They need to be well-versed, from first-hand experience, on how lost or fleeing people will act, how a crime scene needs to be preserved in cadaver searches resulting from criminal acts, etc.
3. The trainer should be well-versed on all breeds and capable of assessing and advising on the limitations and capacity of that breed.
4. Separate marketing from proven performance. If your trainer is good, you can bet he or she will have references. Contact those agencies and inquire about the specific services the trainer was hired for and their thoughts regarding the trainer's services. Just because they have a polished web site, well-designed brochures, etc., does not mean they're the best pick, by default. In some cases, a smaller organization may actually yield better references.
The decision for you, and your dog, to become involved in SAR is a big one. Take the time to do your homework. Your success and enjoyment will not only be richer but it may, in fact, save a life!

If your dog is truly house trained not to go the the bathroom in the house then he should realize that the same rules apply here even though he does not get to run outside as much as he used to.
To be on the safe side, I would recommend crating him during the day while you are not home. If you are moving to a totally new environment this will also help him feel safer until he gets acclimated to his new home.

There is something immensely satisfying in taking in a rescue dog, in many cases someone else has either been unable to cope or it had became a burden or a nuisance, in some cases it is because of a marriage breakup, bereavement or for allergy or medical reasons. The decision to take on a dog should never ever be taken lightly the whole family must buy into the idea or the problems it can cause can be terminal for a relationship that may already be creaking.
I have had clients that told me that they bought a dog so as not to look out of place when walking, they clearly hated the animals and the dogs sadly knew they were unloved and unwanted. In most of these cases I recommended re-homing.
Dogs can be incredibly perceptive they can suffer from loneliness, anxiety, stress depression, and often grieve for lost pals and owners. Sometimes they give up the will to live and die from their grief. The owners do, not always reciprocate this total and utter loyalty,, they sometimes take on dogs without thinking through just what a commitment long term dog ownership really is.

Which Rescue Group?
Rescue societies come in all shapes and sizes and with a variety of policies. Some rescue groups have no facilities to keep dogs; they make referrals from the current owners to potential adopters. Others such as Battersea have enormous resources and large kennel facilities,
All try and help owners find new homes for their dogs, give advice for solving problems, maintain a list of available dogs, and screen potential owners. Most rescue societies are anxious to place dogs in good homes. A few are over-anxious and skimp on temperament evaluation, health issues, or sterilization. And a few have such strict contracts and adoption procedures, that it is easier to adopt a child. These are the ones that place very few dogs. And it is the poor dogs that suffer because of this. If you have gone through an exhaustive interview process only to be turned down because of some minor rule, it can be very annoying in the extreme and puts some really good people off taking on rescue dogs,
Some rescue societies go overboard in establishing guidelines for responsible dog care. I recently lost a much-loved dog to cancer; I have two other dogs and decided that I would like to take on another rescue. This well-known rescue centre (no names) insisted on a lengthy interview and a home visit, even though they knew me and regularly contacted me for advice. Given what I do for a living I found that somewhat institutionalised. They even said that the staff at the centre would have to go through this same procedure.
Please try and support your local small rescue charity. In my area. "Hounslow Animal Welfare Society" (HAWS) do a brilliant job with all types of animals, including cats, dogs, parrots, rabbits, etc, As does "Dogs in Need" click on either to go to their sites
All are run on a shoestring budget and run by unpaid volunteers. These are the charities you should give too, not the big multinationals whose vast charitable donations are eaten up by enormous running costs, and political agenda's. See my links for local and national charities. "Rant over"
Rescue dogs should always be spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and at least relatively healthy before purchase. A dog on medication for an ear infection or arthritis can easily go to a new home; a dog with heartworm or an active respiratory or intestinal infection should stay put until the disease is cured to avoid the stress of relocation while under treatment.
Good rescuers try to match each applicant with an appropriate dog. They know if a particular dog likes kids, can get along with other pets, needs lots of exercise, plays rough, is easy to train, is afraid of men, jumps fences, etc. They cannot make a good match if they don't ask questions about the type of home the adopter will provide. So be prepared for the following questions . . .
Why do you want this breed? Do you have enough time and energy for a Border Collie (or a Jack Russell Terrier, Labrador Retriever, or any dog for that matter)? Do you have a fenced garden? Do you plan to walk the dog a mile or more every day? Will the dog live indoors or outside? Do you have children? How old? Do you have other pets? Do you plan to visit your Vet at least once a year? Etc etc etc.
Choosing the Rescue Dog
Most rescue dogs have had at least one home and sometimes many. It will normally come with behavioural baggage and problems, purely from the fact that it has been rejected at least once.
Some will have been in Kennels or the Rescue Centre for some considerable time, that has an effect on the dogs, especially those that are normally used to family life and constant attention. The dog may have been put there because of behavioural problems, which may include aggression, toileting, excessive barking destructive tendencies etc.
Rescued dogs are usually more than six months old, are housetrained, and mainly past the chewing-everything stage, they are normally happy to be placed in a loving home. Many have been precipitously uprooted from a loved family by some misfortune, and some will have been abused or neglected and need lots of patience and tender loving care, to overcome the trauma they have suffered in their short lives.
The initial adjustment can sometimes be difficult as the dog may need to learn to trust again, or even for the first time. Separation anxiety, fear of noises, and attempts to run away are common. But once past the first few months, when the dog learns to depend on the kindness of his new owners, then the bond is forged.
Here are some points to keep in mind when choosing a dog.
If your time is limited, choose a dog that needs little grooming, minimal training, and only moderate exercise.
If your budget is tight, choose a small-to-medium dog that needs little grooming and minimal training ands less food.
If you are an inexperienced dog owner, do not choose a large dominant dog or a dog with high energy level unless you are committed to six months of steady, patient, consistent training and a dozen years of daily walks of a mile or more.
If you have children or elderly people in your home, do not choose a large, dominant dog that needs lots of training and exercise or a high-strung dog that is fearful of high-pitched voices and childish behaviour. Be prepared to walk the dog at least twice a day and to clean up his/her waste.
They may not be any background or information on the dog not even the dog's original name or age or even what crossbreed it actually is. Many will have been found wandering the streets cold and hungry. Whatever the case there are a few principles and rules you should adhere to.
Rule 1. Do your homework decide on size and basic type of breed before you even start looking. Look at your working and time commitments. Can you really afford the time and expense of dog ownership?
Rule 2. If you have children under five I would strongly recommend against taking on a rescue dog, the temperament may be unknown or masked by the environment of the kennels. In most cases responsible rescue centres will not allow their dogs to be re-homed to couples with young children.
Rule 3. Never buy on impulse or because you feel sorry for a frightened and timid dog, especially if you are not an experienced and confident dog owner.
Rule 4. Discuss what you want in a dog (e.g. an active dog that will play willingly, happily go on long walks, or a homely laid back breed of dog that will happily sit for hours by the fire, and only requires gentle exercise.
Rule 5. If you have decided on a pedigree check the breed requirements and possible problems, discuss the positive and negatives of that breed with breeders and the rescue staff.
Rule 6. Don't expect to walk into a rescue centre and walk out with a dog. They will need to check your suitability to own a dog including your home, garden, and work commitments, in many cases they will pay a home visit and will require you to complete a long questionnaire.
Rule 7. Once you have decided that you are going to re-home a dog then prepare the home and garden well before the arrival
Remember your new dog will be 'Stressed', worried and uncertain of you, your family and the new surroundings/environment. He/she must have time to adjust. By taking on a rescued dog, you will be taking on his/her past too, and this could be an unhappy one.
Among companion animals, dogs are unmatched in their devotion, loyalty and friendship to humans. Anyone who has ever loved and owned a dog will confirm that. The excitement your dog shows when you come home, the wagging tail at the sound of the lead being picked up, the delight in the games and it's head nestled in your lap, these are just some of the rewards of keeping a dog.
Having said that owning a dog is not just a privilege it's a enormous responsibility. These beautiful animals depend on us for at the very minimum, food, water and shelter, but they deserve so much more. If you are considering taking a dog into your life, think long hard and seriously about the commitment that dog ownership entails.

Start training early, when your dog is still a puppy. Make sure that you use the same gestures, body language, the same command words (i.e. "sit", "roll over", "come here", "fetch" etc) consistently in order to allow the dog to associate these words or motions with what he is supposed to do. Practise, practise and practise.
* Heel - it is important to teach your dog to learn how to walk beside you on a loose leash, neither pulling ahead nor lagging behind.
* Down - lying down on command is more than just a cute trick; it is a key component of any successful dog training program. This is also to make sure that your dog obeys your order as the leader of the pack.
* No - make sure that you train your dog to respond to the word "No". This, of all the command words, is the one word that all dogs MUST learn. Training your dog to respond to this word will stop your dog right in its track from doing what it is about to do, sometimes this could mean in life and death situations.
* Stay - a well trained dog should be able to remain where it is when this command word is used, no matter how excited or threatened it feels.

She is a bird dog & yes I know about their innate love of things that can leave the yard. Unfortunately she can also jump a 6ft privacy fence. We adopted her a couple of months back, taken her to generic training classes, rigged the top of the fence with lattice & yet she treats the fence like a berm on a BMX track. Does anyone have any advice on how to deter her or the squirrels without harming any of the parties involved? Pellet guns are not an option! My dog is a german shorthair/vizsla mix. Don't listen to anyone who tells you this is a training issue. Even the most obedient, well-trained dogs will still jump the fence for a critter when you're not around. The invisible fence is probably the most practical way to go, but I gotta admit it'd be fun to see the squirrels trying out the roller :)

It should be mentioned that while this method works with the majority of dogs if your dog is overly aggressive no amount of beeping, citronella, or electrical shock will keep him from running through an invisible fence boundary.
