Can You Clicker Train Your Cat?

Clicker training is a reinforcement or reward for a cat when training them. Clickers are use most often for support when training a cat for a reward. Cats associate the clicker with a good behavior they will use for a long time. Clicker training is associated with classical condition were they associate the sound with food. and operant conditioning (cat will do certain movement to receive food).

Why use a clicker and not tell a cat or make a sound to get your cat to do a trick? A clicker has a sound a cat can hear and associate good behavior. With words, our tones in our voice can change from time to time, which a cat can become confused with the training. With talking for the commands, a cat could mistake the commands. With using a clicker, it is more of a training tool to get the behavior started with the cat. Then you can put the clicker away for that behavior or trick once a cat has learned the behavior

When taking the cat out for a walk or on a trip, the clicker is a good item to carry along with you. Cats can get distracted with other people, or animals in the area. With using the clicker, it will reinforce the behavior that you have taught them. In addition, a clicker can help you with having your cat walk with you instead of wondering around.

With the clicker, a cat can be trained using three easy steps: Get a behavior, mark a behavior, and reinforce the behavior. Get a behavior is the first step. A good example would be for the cat to jump a hoop. The cat will have to know that when you click that they get a treat. Start with very small treats in your pocket. Clicks, Treat, Click Treat do this for a few times until you see the cat coming for the treat on the click.

 Next marking the behavior: You will have to show the cat the hoop. Once the cat touches the hoop, click, treat. Then show the cat to go though the hoop once it does click, treat. Continue to do this until the cat goes though the hoop on its own or your command. Reinforce the behavior Remember to have snacks handy so when you do see your cat go though the hoop a snack is available.

Training a cat with a clicker can be fun for both you and the cat. Taking steps in training will be rewarding to you and the cat. Try not to rush a cat in training, as they can become confused especially if they did not get the step before down. The training will take time and steps to achieve this behavior. Patience, love, and rewards will be the key factor in training your cat.

The clicker is a good exercises tool for a cat. 10 to 15 minutes a day you should get your cat to exercises. For exercising, you can have the cat use a hoop, play with a toy, and climb on the scratching post or something that focus on the cat getting exercise. Exercises will help the cat to stay healthy and help to keep it out of mischief.

Clickers can come with books to help you train, treats, and a clicker. Clickers come in many different size shapes, and color. You will want to research the clickers out. Check out a pet store, Internet sites give lots of information on training and using a clicker. Check out companies that make the clicker by using Internet to see what kind they offer and any additional information that you might need to get the process of training done. Once you have used a clicker, the cat will get good exercise and be a healthy cat. The cat will be happier and you will be happier with the new behaviors that you have taught your cat.

German Shepherd Training

Scent-training German Shepherd.?

I am currently working with my WONDERFUL german shepherd female on scent training. I was wondering if anyone had some in depth instructions and techniques that would help me with this. I want to train her to be able to sniff out people, her cookies, her balls, something with maybe my scent on it such as a dropped set of keys or cell phone, teach her to hunt out people like hide and seek. Please any in depth instructions would be appreciated.

Dog/puppy House Training HELP Please?

Hi, i just got my lovely new dog/puppy she is very calm and good, shes 6 months old and is very aware of training like sit, fetch etc. BUT i have one problem, what is pooping in my kitchen, either when I'm in bed or out she will poo, i have tried to walk her up and down my garden for ages and she will not go, i have walked her in the street and she will not go, i have left her out the garden on her own and she will not go, she will go out there in the day when I'm aound. what can i do?
i have been told not to rub her nose in it and smack her and send her out i have been told to catch her in the act but she only does it when i'm in bed or out.
i understand shes still a puppy but coming home or downstairs to a big pile of poo isn't very nice lol
any sort of help of what i should do would be great!

there r sum sorta sprays that r too smelly for dogs n if a place be smelly n tease theyr nose they wont poop or pee in there.... so go to a petshop and ask for those sprays or if u coulden find any wash ur floor with sum bleach/water ... it helped us with our puppy ... he used to pee on da bedroom floor rite behind the bed since we were gone ..... specially when he was mad at us was left alone or bored ... !!!

1. Get Your Dog's Attention: Getting your dog's attention is very important in order to successfully train him. Getting his attention is the easy part, keeping it is an entirely different matter. Dog's have short attention spans so you should keep your training sessions short so your dog doesn't become bored or distracted during the session. You can get your dog's attention by speaking to him or offering treats. Dogs love treats and they are great for getting your dog's attention.


2. Use the Proper Tools: Having the right training tools can help you tremendously in your dog training. A training leash and regular collar works for the majority of dogs but some dogs need special training collars. If you use a training collar it is vital that it fits your dog comfortably in order for it to be safe.


3. Teach Your Dog to Be Safe Around Cars: Teaching your dog basic commands such as sit, stay and down is important. You need to be able to properly control your dog around cars to keep him safe. Keeping your dog crated while he's in the car helps protect him in the event of a car crash.


4. Always Use Positive Reinforcement: Dogs respond to gentle handling and you should always praise him profusely when he does something right. Dogs love pleasing their owners and when your dog sees you pleased with him, this is a reward in itself for him. You can never praise a dog too much, just make sure you only praise good behavior and never enforce bad behavior.

Redirecting your dog's attention from anything he's doing that he shouldn't be doing to something positive works much better than scolding your dog.


6. Play With Your Dog: Playing with your dog regularly helps strengthen the bond between you and will make your dog more eager to please you. This is an important part of your dog's training which shouldn't be neglected.


7. Work With Your Dog on a Daily Basis: Work with your dog every day and don't try to teach him new things before he has fully comprehended what you are teaching him. Daily training helps your dog learn and remember what is required of him and keeps him sharp.


8. Try to Understand Canine Communication: Try to read up as much as you can on how dogs communicate. Some people tend to humanize their dogs and this isn't realistic as dogs have their own way of communicating. Step-by-step Guide to Potty Training Your New Puppy

One of the most frustrating elements of acquiring a new puppy is preparing for potty training. To assist with this nagging issue, we’ve outlined a few of our favorite potty training techniques. The three key components to successful potty training with a new puppy are: Be Prepared, Be Consistent and Be Patient.


Be Prepared

Establish a “Potty command”

This is the phrase you’ll use whenever you’d like your puppy to do his business. When taking your puppy to the designated spot where you want him to eliminate, you should stand with him and tell him “Go potty” or whatever phrase you’ve established as your “potty command”. Having one phrase you use repeatedly will help your puppy understand what it is you are asking him to do. Important tip: make sure everyone in the family is using the same phrase (this is very important so the puppy does not become confused).


Establish an “Elimination spot”

Choose a location not too far from your door to be the designated “elimination spot”. You can create a spot by outlining an 8x10 area with a clothesline. This will help to give your puppy a visual clue where you’d like him to go. Always take your puppy to the same area and give him his “potty command”.


Choose a “Praise” phrase

The easiest way to teach your puppy good manners is to wait until he does something you like and reward him with kind words and a treat. Choose a “praise” phrase to use whenever your puppy is behaving in a way you like; such as, playing with a toy, greeting visitors nicely, lying quietly or eliminating outside. The phrase can be something as simple as “Good Boy” or “Nice job, Duke.” Your puppy will very quickly associate the “praise” phrase with a positive experience and want to please you. Again, make sure everyone caring for the puppy is using the same phrase.


Select a “Confinement” Area

If your puppy is not reliable in the house, don’t leave him unattended. Whenever you cannot supervise your puppy, he should be confined to an area small enough he won’t want to eliminate there. It should be just big enough for him to comfortably stand, lie down and turn around in. This area could be a portion of a laundry room or bathroom blocked off by baby gates or a dog crate or kennel. Remember to immediately take your puppy outside to potty after spending extended time in his “confinement” area.


Be consistent

Be aware that young puppies physically need to eliminate every 2-4 hours. Establishing a consistent routine for your puppy is critical. Initially, you should take the puppy outside at least every 2 hours, immediately after he wakes from his nap or is released from his confinement area and about ½ hour after eating. As you get to know your puppy better you’ll recognize the signs your pup needs to relieve himself and can reduce the number of trips necessary. When your pup is playing in the house, keep a close eye on him. If he starts to sniff around or turn in circles – pick him up and carry him to the spot where you’d like him to eliminate, give him the “potty command” and stay with him until he relieves himself. Once he does, immediately congratulate him with his “praise” phrase and a tasty teat. Don’t wait until you’ve returned to the house. Immediate gratification reassures the puppy this is the behavior you want from him. If you aren’t able to attend to your puppy every 2-4 hours, enlist in the help of a local pet sitter. He/she can help visit your pup whenever you are not available and decrease the time it may take to get your new pup potty trained.


Be Patient

If your puppy does have an accident, don’t punish him or rub his nose in the waste, doing so will only make the pup afraid to eliminate in your presence. Your puppy didn’t make a mistake –you did! Remember, when your puppy is not confined, you should be supervising him. If you catch him in the act, carry him outside immediately and give the “potty command”. If he finishes outside, praise and treat him as you normally would. If you discover an accident after the fact, do nothing except clean the spot with a good enzymatic cleaner so it isn’t labeled as a “potty place” and supervise your puppy more closely.


If you make all the necessary preparations, remain consistent with your training techniques and stay patient with your pup –he should be potty trained in no time!

Potty Training Puppies – The Sure-Fire Process of Potty Training Puppies

Some folks claim that potty training puppies can be a real chore, but I beg to differ. In my experience, potty training puppies are so my much easier than potty training an adult dog. Have you ever tried potty training a grown dog?

Now that's a real chore!

So we have to start training them early on. Listen, I'm going to share with you my ‘sure-fire' process of potty training puppies. I also use a clicker as a training tool to further reinforce good habits in all my puppies.

See, I discovered a comprehensive list of dog behavior training tactics from a clicker guide which I downloaded to my computer a few months ago. The guide mostly focuses on positive behavior shaping tactics with the aid of a clicker.

Okay look, if you're having some slight trouble potty training puppies, then try following the process below:

Step 1

Establish ‘relief zone' for your dog. This zone can be a small room where your puppies are allowed to relief without being reprimanded. Now whenever you bring the puppy to this section, please remember to enter via the same room access.

Step 2

Introduce your puppy to the clicker. The aim here is to help your puppy connect the clicker with something positive (treat, praise, etc). So here's what you should do: offer your puppy a treat. When he eats, you click.

Conduct the treat and click process a few more times. Try experimenting with the placement of treats e.g. put a treat on the floor; also try putting one on a target stick or on a crate. And make sure you click accurately.

Step 3

Now whenever you see your puppy attempting to relieve himself in an inappropriate spot, promptly bring him to the relief zone and give him the potty phrase.

When he potties in his relief zone, take out the clicker and click. Praise your puppy for a job well done or if you have a treat in your pocket -- give it to him!

Chewing Disorders in Cats

There are cats, which are universally characterized as finicky eaters, who orally obsess upon objects such as fabric, string and plastic.  They can proceed to suck, chew or ingest these materials as well.

 

Some animal behaviorists believe kittens that are orphaned or weaned too early were never taught by their mother to stop nursing.  Consequently, later in life the cat may pick up where it left off using a synthetic mother-substitute.  A little chewing or sucking is absolutely normal for inquisitive kittens, however, it can be a problem when the behavior is repeated over and over again or damaging to the cat and/or household that has been thought to be an obsessive-compulsive disorder.  The disorder can occur with any cat breed of any age, but wait; animal researchers now believe there appears to be some genetic components to these behaviors.

 

Some veterinary behaviorists believe that when it comes to chewing disorders, wool sucking and chewing in Oriental breeds (the Siamese and Burmese Cats) are the number one problem seen for diagnosis and treatment on the behaviorist's couch.

 

Kittens are much like human toddlers, therefore, many of their weird chewing or ingestive behaviors can be related to their natural desire to play and put things in their mouths for exploration purposes.

 

It is the adult cats that suck, chew, or eat strange things who are more likely afflicted with a compulsive disorder.  Some veterinary behaviorists theorize these cats may be simply following the saying of, "if it feels good....do it!"  Others theorize that the act of chewing releases endorphins in the brain that gives cats a "meow high."  When these cats suck or chew, the happy-hormones are released, and consequently these cats become happy-hormone addicts.

 

If you are experiencing a cat with a chewing disorder, the experience is certainly a challenge.   You may find yourself trying to cat-proof your entire house very much like you would do for young human toddlers.  And it may seem, regardless of how good you cat-proof things, the cat still finds something "unusual or abnormal" to chew on or eat.

 

The most favorite kind of materials for cats seems to be "wool fabric," especially in the winter season.  Fabric chewing cats like the crunch of the fabric.  This is especially true of cats fed only soft foods.  Behaviorists theorize that cats start this bad habit because they are bored, anxious, stressed or inadvertently rewarded for the behavior.

 

Tips for owners of cat chewing disorders:

 

• The best preventive for chewing disorders and strange appetites is to provide kittens with proper chew toys and interactive forms of exercise
• You can teach kittens good habits by praising him or her for good chewing and healthy, desirable behaviors.
• Nutritional deficiencies are seldom the reason behind chewing and strange appetites

 

Cat chewing disorders can be a serious health and medical problem.  For example, imagine if your cat chewed and swallowed something such as your daughter's hair crunchy.  The cat would probably require a major surgery to remove the foreign object.  Eating substances that can cause intestinal blockage are the most dangerous, and can carry a high fatality rate.

 

Experts recommend:

 

• Stopping the nasty chewing habits before the cat gains a substantial appetite for them and stops being a cat with regular routines of playing, resting and grooming itself

 

Treatment might include:

 

• Keeping household changes to a minimum
• Switching "good chew" objects for bad ones
• Using repellents or other deterrents around taboo areas
• As a last resort, drug therapy
• Remove wool or plastic or any other foreign objects for the cat and give them dry food, lettuce or whole baby carrots
• Provide alternative oral stimulation in the form of rawhide soaked in chicken broth or other dog chew treats
• Create a cat-tractive window box filled with catnip, grass and other items designed to lure your cat away from the offending items
• Bored cats can become destructive cats.  Provide plenty of places to climb, crept, leap and race, use cat activity centers and the newer interactive toys to engage kittens mind and body
• Consult with a veterinarian at the earliest signs of a problem as treatment is always easiest in the early stages of any kind of problem

This method differs from crate training which is excellent for puppies, but some large dogs find a crate way too confining.

It is important for the master to spend as much time within the training area with his or her puppy as possible. It is important for the owner to play with the puppy in the this area, and to let the puppy eat and sleep in that area. The puppy should be given a special bed there, anything from a store bought bed, a large bath towel,or even a big box. To start with, the puppy may eliminate in this area, however once the puppy has acknowledged it as his or her very own living space, he or she will be reluctant to soil it.

Once the doggy has gotten used to sleeping in this bed, the master may move it throughout the house, relocating it from room to room. The times when you are not with your puppy, it ought to be limited to the training area.

Establishing the toilet area

The second part of house training a puppy is the set up of the toilet area. It will be important for the puppy to have access to this place whenever it needs to relieve himself. It is also important for the master to go with the puppy every time until he or she gets into the habit of only using the toilet area. This will ensure that the pup has established that area for her potty needs.

A regular feeding schedule will make house training your puppy that much easier for both the owner and the puppy. Feeding the puppy regularly will result in a better schedule for the pup's potty habits. Continuing the house breaking process

After the puppy is regularly relieving within the toilet area and not messing in the training area, it's high time to extend that training area to the rest of the house. This process needs to be carried out slowly, beginning with a single room and gradually extending to the rest of the house. The area should only be extended when you are sure of the puppy's ability to handle its bladder and bowels.

First expand the training area to a single room, let the puppy eat, play as well as sleep in that room, however only when closely watched. When it is not possible to supervise your puppy, place it back in the original training area. Then, right after the pup has accepted the space as an extension of the original training area, the area may be extended.

Accelerating the process

If this process is too long for your requirements, it may be speeded up, however it is important to continue cautiously. It is easier to spend some time at the start than to retrain a problem pup afterwards. One of the ways to successfully speed up house training is to praise and reward the puppy every single time it utilizes the actual established toilet area. It is also essential not to punish the pup for slips. Abuse is only going to confuse the doggy and slow down the pace of the house training process.

How does someone become a certified dog trainer?

I've trained my dog and several others, but I would like to have some sort of certification in it. I work with a rescue group and would like to offer volunteer services of dog training to people who adopt from this group, but I want to be as good as I possibly can at it and I want it to be completly legit.

Are there classes here or there to become trained, or do I go to school for it?

There is no such thing as a "certified" dog trainer. Schools are a waste of money. You want to learn to train, then you need to earn competition titles on your dog.

Are You Ready For The Responsibility Of A Doberman Pinscher?

Many of us have grown up hearing that a Doberman Pinscher was a very aggressive animal that should be owned only to be a guard dog and not a family pet. We've all seen the movies with the vicious guard dogs chasing the villains and most likely decided that the breed would not be for us. As you can probably tell from reading this far, owning a Doberman Pinscher will require a big commitment of your time. Therefore, find a trainer who will help both you and your dog become both a contented and an obedient pet. As a caution, remember that the Doberman Pinscher is still often seen as an animal that is not to be trusted, so you will need to make sure that this breed will be accepted in the environment in which you live. While each Doberman has a different disposition, they shouldn't be left alone with small animals until after they have proven they are gentle 100% of the time. A Doberman can make a great addition to your household, just make sure you have the time and training ability to control one.

Where to get good info on trailing & tracking training for a Bloodhound?

I have a Bloodhound Pup who is about 6 months old, I am very interested in the man-trailing training. I have trained & competed in AKC obed. but now I am eager to learn how to train a rescue dog.

Your best bet is to read about trailing and how to get the dog started, then join a local club that teaches man trailing. The bloodhound already knows how to trail - you have to learn how to work with him as a team and understand the signals he gives you and help him understand what it is you want him to do.

When I first started out training with my bloodhounds, I didn't really know the difference between tracking and trailing. In tracking, the dog follows the footsteps of the runner, while in trailing, they are following the skin rafts of the runner, which may or may not be right in the footsteps. Bloodhounds are more natural at trailing, and in my opinion trailing is much more effective and successful in locating the runner or victim. The dog training is started differently for trailing than it is for tracking, so make sure you've read up and decided which you want to do.

Do some reseach in your area on the opportunities to put your dog to work. There are several organizations in my area which use man-trailing dog, including one who does searches for lost alzheimer patients. Usually you work for free as a volunteer unless you get into a law enforcement organization.

Another area you can look into is FEMA Search and Rescue. They do training for the full search capabilities - like searching rubble, trailing, air-scent, cadaver search.

The American bloodhound club (ABC) gives titles in man-trailing, and the AKC gives titles in tracking.

4 Steps For Effective Cat Litter Training

Training your cat to use a litter box is an essential part of being a cat owner. Aside from the obvious things to teach your furry little friend, you may wish to consider behavioral type training in which you allow your animal to socialize with others even though you do not already have other pets in the home. This allows life to be much easier if you should decide to get a new kitten at some point of if you have any intentions of getting a dog as well.

There are four main stages to training your cat to use a litter box. A couple of these stages will be basic common sense while one or two of them may be useful toilet training tips that you may not have thought of. Either way, these could save your sanity and your carpets!

1. Buy 2 litter boxes. Why I hear you ask? Well, the first one should be shallow and small, perfect for little kittens to be able to climb in and out of and still have room to do its business happily. The litter needs to be deep enough to cover and solid matter as well as being shallow enough to stop the cat from scattering it all over your floor. The second litter box should be much bigger, for when your kitten gets older. As it grows, your cat will need deeper litter and also a bigger tray to be able to move around in.

2. Buy your cat litter from a reliable source. This is one of the least known toilet training tips but is also one of the most important. Your cat can grow to recognize the litter you have bought and when you buy a different brand he or she can refuse to use it. By buying a brand that is well known that you know you can always buy, you can ensure that your cat will never stick his or her nose up at the litter you are buying. (For a great money saving tip, try using a cheaper brand right from the beginning as you may not be able to swap it for a cheaper brand later on!)

3. Whenever your cat or kitten squats, scratches or generally looks as though he or she is about to use your sofa, bed, carpet or any other area of the house as a toilet, pick them up and move them to the litter tray. This will take a couple of go's to get it right but you will soon learn the signs and the cat will soon learn to use the litter tray.

Best Uses For Use A Puppy Training Crate

As a new puppy parent getting a puppy training crate can help to housebreak your puppy and keep her from chewing things up. Using a training crate can be the most effective method in house breaking your puppy and doing it at a record speed. As a rule, dogs do not like to do their business where they sleep and do not like to do their business in a confined area. Have your puppy with you when you are home and awake and get your puppy used to a walking schedule. Everyone has a different schedule due to work or school, but ideally, a dog should be walked at least two or three times a day. Walking your puppy and placing him in the training crate when you are not home or in bed, go hand in hand. When you walk your puppy, encourage him to do his business on the walk and compliment him when he does. At the same time, the puppy will realize that he is in the puppy training crate because he cannot do his business inside your house.

So how big should a puppy training crate be? Well, this all depends on the size of your puppy. You need to realize that most puppies do not stay small and cute forever. When a dog turns one year old, he is as developed as a seven-year-old child. This means that a puppy will develop and grow very quickly and at one to three months, a puppy will already whine, bark, growl, and do other things that dogs do. At six months, your puppy will already grow to twice or three times the size it was when it was born. By nine to ten months, your puppy will already be almost full-grown. You need to take this into account when you buy a puppy training crate. It should be big enough for your puppy to move around comfortably and it should be big enough to be able to place your puppy's food and water dishes inside. Remember that if you don't have the conditions right, your puppy will whine because it will be uncomfortable. You don't want to start another problem by solving the first one.

Never keep your puppy in the training crate when you are around unless it is for punishing him for misbehaving. Remember, your puppy will become part of your family. As your puppy grows, he will become a four-legged companion for the whole family and a great playmate for the kids. Hence, you should get your puppy used to every member in the family and it should be around everyone in the family. Only when you are all away or asleep for the night, should you keep your puppy in the training crate. Furthermore, take your puppy for frequent walks, especially when young. Younger puppies tend to eat more because of their rapid growth and development, so they also tend to use the bathroom more. Get the puppy accustomed to the idea that he needs to go outside to use the bathroom. The puppy training crate should be big enough for the puppy to be comfortable, yet small enough for the puppy not to use it as a bathroom.

Remember, your puppy should eventually be weaned off the training crate as it learns that it's bathroom is outside, when you walk him. By the time your puppy turns one year, it should already be house broken and should not need the puppy training crate anymore. Once your puppy is house broken, you should encourage him to sleep in a doggy bed or in a place where the puppy feels comfortable.

Very involved! My husband and I do not gave any human children (yet), so the dogs are with us all the time.

I do not jog with my dogs, being a Saint Bernard and a Newfoundland, they would not appreciate that too much. However, I do walk them twice daily. And when it is warm outside I will also swim with my dogs. Exercise for us all!!!

My dogs do go to work with me often :) They like to either hang out at the front desk of the office with the receptionist, or like to join the other dogs (our vets and techs usually bring our dogs with us) in the back where they can run around and have fun in a safe environment.

I do not show my dogs (both adopted out of rescue), but I do work with both of them individually where they excel. For example, I do obedience with my Saint Bernard. She would LOVE to do agility, but due to her bilateral hip dysplasia... I have to hold her back! My Newfoundland passed her water and drafting test this past summer, so we put a lot of work and time into that!

I am a member of both breed clubs (American and local) and am very active in rescue and fostering for both breeds.

Any recoomenationds on HRD dog training aids?

I have a 18 months old dog that I am training for HRD. I am working with SEVERAL instructors who have said she has AMAZING drive and will make a fine dog with more training. My only problem is that my closests intructor lives an hour away, so i have no regular access to training aids.. and as we all know consistency is everything! We had scheduled a trip to visit the "body farm" in knoxville TN but a recent abuse of privaleges (by some one else) has caused them to pull all support. Are there any good places to obtain training aids? I have heard of sythetic aids, i think its called SIGMA? is it worth it or should i hold out for something better? I really want to be able to work with her DAILY instead of once every few weeks when i can gain access to training aids. Any info would be greatly appreciated!

They used to use fetal pigs, harvested from the nearest hog farmer. Now, they claim that the pigs lead to a confused training. That is likely true. But, it has worked for many years, as that was what was available..
I'm hoping that those books will give you some good ideas.
