It seems like the positive training methods only get you so far. It's a great method to communicate with the dog - have him think and problem solve. But in presence of distractions and other temptations, it doesn't necessarily instill reliable obedience.

Dog Agility Training... an Explanation of What Dog Agility Entails
This is the first article which I wrote and published on my dog agility training blog... you'll find it in the February 2007 Archives.
P.S. I always think blogs are best read from the oldest Archives to the current day! That way you get to read most of the 'on-topic' articles first, and not the other way round!
Introducing Dog Agility
Quite simply, if you are looking for a fun activity to enjoy with your dog, in a friendly atmosphere, with lots of like-minded people, and, which has the added benefit of keeping both you and your pet fit - then surely dog agility training must come out near the top of your list! Once you have tried agility training - it can become seriously addictive.
For those who have absolutely no idea what dog agility training is, perhaps the best way to explain it is to make an analogy with show jumping where the horses have to jump over different types of obstacles, all in the correct order, and within a specific time limit.
Try it out, just for fun, at home with your pet to begin with - stick a few weave poles in your lawn [Sorry! I apologise to all lawn-proud gardeners in advance, but we can have dogs AND be dedicated gardeners too. I know it applies to me too] and see if your dogs enjoy it, or place a telephone directory on the lawn and see if they like to jump.
Do nothing more than that, your pets safety must come first... so you will both need professional training before you go any further. For full safety information please see our article entitled... 'Dog Agility... when, where and how it first began'.
Also please remember agility first requires that you be in complete control of your dog AT ALL TIMES, so basic obedience must come top of your list.
If you both enjoy doing agility, find a local club - you are sure to find someone amongst your local doggy people who knows where the local dog agility training takes place [failing that, try an internet search, or your local library, but a personal recommendation is always best... after all it could come with some useful tips]. Visit the club, or clubs, which are recommended, then decide which one you like and prefer... then why not join it? And who knows how far you might progress!
Should you and your pet progress well within your local club, you could in time represent your club in regional Agility Tests. Then, if the unimaginable happens and you win, your club team could go forward to national finals and it could even go on to compete at the Crufts Agility Trials in front of a huge, and growing, TV audience of the dog loving public - many of whom find the agility, flyball, obedience, etcetera, more rewarding to watch than the 'Main Event'!
That dream is for the top few pairings [of dog and owner] within the top clubs - and you don't have to aspire to those heights to get loads of fun and benefits from agility. Essentially pet agility training is a fun way to exercise for both pets and owners. It is an enjoyable and sociable sport, and a way of spending time with people who are on the same doggy wavelength.
You and your dog/dogs can go for weekends away together at agility club competitions. Many competitors have their own caravans, and attend regular meetings and camping sites, for the round of agility tests which are held year round at the various clubs countrywide.
This is just a basic introduction to what dog agility training entails. I am not going into detail on the ways rounds are judged or points awarded, nor will this introduction cover the different obstacles, and the need to touch the required contact points... we will leave all that, plus answering the often asked question of which breeds of dogs are suitable for agility to a later article.

What are your thoughts on doggy boot camp, where you send your dog off for a week or two to be trained? I'm thinking about doing it with my Cane Corso, He's a great dog but he really needs to work on his manners, and walking etiquette. This is just one of the many options i've been considering... And if he is gone for two weeks would he forget me, and not act as loving as he does now?
Personally I think the OWNER needs just as much training as the DOG, and sending the dog away doesn't do the owner any good.
So you send the dog away for a couple of weeks, he learns how to obey someone else and to respect them, and then he comes back to you and you have no idea how to give the commands. It confuses the dog, frustrates you, and serves no purpose.

Positive reinforcement in conjunction with crate training is the best way to house break a new puppy. The dog will need to be taken out often in the beginning ( hourly for a 10 wk old, plus 15 mins. after eating, drinking, or playing) When the pup eliminates outside, praise and reward him. The puppy will begin to associate reward with positive behavior. As the pup gets a bit older and muscle control further develops, he can be taken out less often. okay i just got a puppy and it likes to bite on things such as my wooden door etc. but then he also bites my hand,leg,feet,etc. and he's not angry or anything he just wants to play. how can i train him to stop biting things?
I found the best way to get my dog to stop biting things was to make sure she had plenty of toys and treats of her own so that she is not interested in other things. When she is chewing on her toys I would give her alot of praise and when she would attempt to chew something off limits I would let her know I was displeased. After a while she got the picture.
Here is a simple dog training routine in six easy steps. Depending on your dog and the situation, a trainer will vary her training method when she decides that a particular training challenge needs either a little more or less focus. When you know this method like the back of your hand, you can add a personal touch if desired.
Here are the simple six steps for teaching your dog new tricks:
1. Get your dog to perform the behavior. 2. Mark the behavior. 3. Reward the new behavior. 4. Repeat the behavior until it happens 90% of the time or more. 5. Add a verbal cue as your dog does the behavior to associate the word with the appropriate response. 6. Use your verbal cue to elicit the behavior.
You get particular behaviors by capturing, shaping, or luring the behavior. You mark the behavior with an audible click, or some other reward marker your dog has already learned which is understood to mean the reward is coming. Reward the behavior by following the click with her favorite treat or, in some cases, with a favorite toy or other desirable reward, such as swimming or going outside. Repeat the behavior until your pet is offering it automatically before you add the verbal cue, so she will associate the word with the correct behavior response. For instance, by saying "Sit" as she does it, you are telling her that the name of the behavior she is doing is Sit. If you ask her to do it before she's offering the behavior easily, you risk teaching her that the word sit means "stand there and look at me," or worse, "sniff the ground and pull on the leash." After your dog has heard the word at least a half-dozen times during the behavior, depending on how quickly she seems to learn, then you can say the word first to elicit the behavior. Be sure that her attention is focused on you so that she actually hears the word, and keep your body position the same as it was when you were getting the behavior before. If you had been doing the SIT while you were standing and you suddenly start asking for it while you are sitting, she probably will not understand that it is the same thing.
Give her a few seconds to respond. When she sits, click! and reward. If she doesn't sit, use the minimum amount of assistance necessary (through body language or a lure, not through physical assistance) to get the behavior, and repeat the exercise. If you find that she will only respond if you help her, start to minimize the amount of help you give until she is sitting for the verbal cue without any help from you.

Please, bear all of your thought into this. If your a dog expert then that will be awesome. My dog is the nicest Beagle/Jack Russell you will meet. But when he's being punished he retreats under a table and becomes viciously defensive----like bearing teeth and growling. Even snapped at me. See, sometimes when the dog does something awful...We resort to a spanking which is painful for both me and him. I am very ashamed of doing this. The simple truth is your dog WANTS to be led.
All dogs have either Alpha or Beta qualities. If your dog has strong Alpha qualities, he will compete with you for leadership. Let the dog win this battle and you'll be following HIS rules.

As a dog owner, your responsibility is to train your dog to understand that YOU are the "Alpha Dog" of the pack.
By acting like the "Alpha Dog", your dog will be able to instinctively relax and just follow your lead.
Additionally, your family members or other owners must establish themselves on the hierarchy of the pack. Your dog should understand that he is the lowest on the chain and it is his place to follow everyone's lead.
This will create a friendly, obedient and submissive dog that is respectful of your commands. Really the point of all this is to have your dog's respect and obtain control.
Everything you do from the moment you get your puppy will either build upon your Alpha role or take away from it.
That's why it is so important to have a clear understanding of rules before you get your dog.
When you stick to hard and fast boundaries for your dog's behavior, he will begin to understand what he can and can't get away with. This also includes feeding him on a set schedule.
As he realizes YOU'RE the boss, he will comply effortlessly with the kind of behavior you expect.
Part of this strategy involves the immediate correction of disapproved behavior with acceptable behavior. A good example of this is when your dog is chewing on one of your shoes and you replace the shoe with an approved chew toy.
You must also immediately follow the bad behavior with a sharp "No" and ALWAYS encourage any good behavior with "Good Boy". This taps into the power of positive reinforcement dog training.
I expand on this in other articles. But for now, know that these two phrases are "trigger commands". Over time, they will become incredibly powerful so use them appropriately.
Now you have a much better understanding of how dogs think. So don't feel bad about enforcing rules to your dog. It's actually comforting to him.
By establishing your role as the leader, you make your dog's life less chaotic and can train him knowing you are doing the right thing.

Dog Training Courses - Which Method is Right for You?

Types of Dog Training Courses
Reward Training: Emphasizes positive reinforcement -- instead of punishing or yelling at your dog for what you don't want him to do, you reward your dog for doing what you want him to do. Clicker Training: This method takes a hand-held clicker, which oddly enough makes a "clicking" noise when squeezed. During clicker training, a dog is reinforced in behaviors with doggie treats paired with the clicking noise. At some point, the treats will be eliminated and the dog will know it has done something right simply by hearing the clicking noise. Very effective.
Electric Collar Training: As the name implies, this type of training involves your dog wearing a collar in which you are able to administer an electric shock to discourage certain behaviors. this method should only be used by professional trainers in the most extreme circumstances. If you are reading this blog, collar training is not for you -- or your dog.
Ultrasonic Whistle Training: You know of the dog whistles that you can't hear but a dog can - right? This method uses these whistles to get your dog's attention as well as to train him. You will need to be trained in this method first.

Going out and purchasing a scratch pad or ball of yarn might be a good idea in that your cat will be able to release his or her energy in the process of playing rather than damaging your belongings or possessions. Dealing with Aggressive Dog Behavior and how to prevent it
On the whole dogs are not born aggressive. After all they are pack animals and usually quite sociable. Aggressive behavior in domesticated dogs is generally caused by a poor environment, lack of proper training or abuse in the pups formative years. However, as in humans there are also the exceptions to the rule and some dogs are just aggressive bad dogs.
Whatever the cause of aggressive bad dog behavior, it will be in your interest to manage this behavior in your dog. Aggressive dog behavior can be costly both financially and physically, sometimes with terrible consequences. This is why it is imperative to get a handle on this type of bad behavior in your dog.
Aggressive Dog Behavior- First 14 weeks
Within the first 6 weeks your pup should be well on his way to being socialised. If this is not accomplished early on, it could lead to aggressive dog behavior later on. This could result in your young pup biting people and behaving in a very anti-social way.
A good rule of thumb is to allow your pup to spend at least the first 8 weeks of his life with his litter. This will embed some instinctive social skills in your pup and lay a solid foundation for a more stable and balanced pooch later on. Always try and approach your young pup in a controlled and quiet manner. Avoid being loud, angry and abusive with the new young pup as this could instil fearful aggression in your pup. Just as with a new human baby, one needs to be gentle and calm around them. This will bring about a more confident and stable dog later.
By the time your young pup is 14 weeks old he should be well aware of his place in his new pack. Effectively, the young pup should be well socialised with humans as well as with other dogs. If these traits are not clearly visible, it may well mean that professional help may need to be sought to dispel any aggressive dog behavior. Bottom line is that you should use the initial few weeks with your pup to build a solid foundation for a stable and properly socialised dog going forward.
Aggressive Dog Behavior- Possible causes
There are unfortunately some other reasons for the onset or display of aggressive dog behavior.
If the dog is continually exposed to bad treatment and abuse it stands to reason that aggressive dog behavior will be the result. An abused dog will try and protect itself. It will lash out at its tormentor or any perceived threat. If you are not able to respect the dog's right to proper decent treatment then perhaps it may well be better to forgo dog ownership. Dog's are willing and trusting companions to man and this trust should not be abused.
Genetics also plays a role in the display of aggressive dog behavior. Some breeds are just more pre-disposed to being aggressive. It may be worthwhile to do some homework prior to selecting a pup to bring home to your family.
Dogs will instinctively try and assume a dominant role in their pack. This can be seen in the posturing and nipping that a young adolescent dog may display from time to time. Just as with teenagers, the young dog is testing your resolve to assume the dominant role. This is when you need to ensure that your young pup understands that you are the Alpha Pack leader. If you do not get this aggressive dog behavior under control, it could lead to an uncontrollable and vicious mature dog down the line.
Aggressive Dog Behavior- Addressing the issues
There are very many professionals out there who could cost you an arm and leg to get your dogs aggressive behavior under control. Here are some basic ideas about how to accomplish a properly socialised and obedient dog.
Firstly, do some research and arm yourself with as much knowledge as possible as to ascertain the reasons for the aggression. Sometimes the aggression could be brought on by things that one may never be able to change such as genetics. So choose your breed well.
Generally, a neutered or spayed dog will tend to become more docile and aggression will become less of an issue with dogs that have undergone this treatment. This is not for everyone, and should not been seen as a cure for aggressive dog behavior.
Never reward your dog's bad behavior. By this I mean, you should never seem amused or show by means of your body language that you are pleased with him when he is behaving badly. Such as when he jumps up on you and barks at you when arriving home. This will just imprint in the dogs mind that his aggressive bad behavior pleases you.
Always be sure to get all people who interact with your dogs on a daily basis, to maintain continuity as far as the dogs training goes. There is no point in you maintaining a strict training regime with your dog only to have it undone by the kids are friends.
Certainly there are very many in depth studies and training programs which will assist in training your dog. If the issue is really dangerous or threatening, then it is always advisable to seek professional help. Yes, this may cost some money, but that is nothing compared to what a rampant ferocious and aggressive dog could do to other people or even your family.
Nobody wants an out of control pet. So spend some time in getting to know your dog and dog mentality in general. Remember a dog is a dog, no matter how human he may behave. Dogs will always revert to their instincts. Dogs are far more perceptive of your body language than your voice.
If given the chance your dog will want nothing more than to be your best friend. Please be his by getting aggressive dog behavior under control.

However, all dogs, big and small, young and old, can benefit from dog training. Dog training can take your puppy from a cute little mess to an ideal housemate and beyond. The start: puppy training The majority of dog training for puppies is designed to make them better household companions. Most family pets will not extend their dog training beyond this phase. For working and competitive dogs, this aspect of dog training is only the beginning. Dog training on the puppy level can encompass a variety of styles.
The most popular dog training (so popular, in fact, that many people do not even realize that it is training) includes things like training your dog to walk on the leash, house training your dog, and simple commands like "sit" and "drop it," as well as basic social behaviors. First and foremost, you must have a routine for your Terrier to follow daily. To be really successful in housetraining, you must have a schedule to take your terrier outside to potty and, over weeks to a few months, it becomes ingrained in their every day life.
Most people want to go to the bathroom right after they wake up. Your Yorkie is no different and this is where the routine begins. As soon as you are up in the morning, take him outside for his first potty trip of the day. He has been holding it all night, so go out quickly without any disruptions or distractions.
Make this potty trip a short one. Let your Yorkshire Terrier do its business and then come right back in for breakfast. Let him eat while you get ready for your day. By the time you are all dressed and have eaten your breakfast, it will be time to take your Yorkie out to potty again.
Hopefully your Yorkie's food and water has settled enough so that he is ready to go back out and do it again. Your Yorkshire Terrier puppy will need potty breaks at mid-morning and mid-afternoon. If your job or school takes you away from the house during the day, then you will need a friend or family member to keep to the routine.
Your Yorkie will need to be taken out again as soon as you return home. Again, a schedule or routing needs to be followed consistently. It may be helpful to keep a chart with times of day for potty breaks. These can be adjusted gradually as you make note of your puppy's natural elimination patterns.
Feed your Yorkie dinner at the same time every evening, early enough to have his food settled enough to have a successful potty break before going down for bed for the night. And in the morning, begin the whole routine again, keeping to the same schedule.
Potty trips should be kept short (ten to 15 minutes at the most) and low keyed, and do not let your Yorkie confuse these breaks with playtime. Give your Yorkshire Terrier plenty of praise and affection when he does his business. A small treat and verbal praise work good for this purpose, and will reinforce his good potty habits.
At one time, negative reinforcement was the rule. If your dog had an accident in the house, he was scolded and punished. This has proven to be less effective than positive reinforcement. Praising the good behavior works because your Yorkshire Terrier wants to be loved and to please you. If you are late getting home and find an accident, just go right to your normal routine.
After taking your Yorkie out on his potty break, you can clean up the mess without any fanfare. It is best if your puppy doesn't even see you doing it. You both just let it pass and do better tomorrow.
Your Yorkshire Terrier is dependent on you for almost everything. One of the most important is a firm foundation of potty training, which is only possible by following a routine from the beginning, and will result in a happy Yorkie and a happy owner.

I've read tons of info on puppy training and watched videos. I'm really losing my patience. Buddy my baby Lab is awesome when I can give him attention. When I'm out of the room for more than 15 seconds, he starts crying. I understand that I need to exercise him and do some training such as "sit" and "down". That's great and all, but I can't commit more than 2 hours a day. Another major issue is that he's not fully vaccinated. It'll take another 3 months before I can even walk him or take him outside for some good exercise. So what are my options?
My nephew's Alakskan Malamute is the same way. As soon as she hears that front door close, she started crying. But after a few days she got used to it. And her whing and crying stopped almost 90%. Who doesn't love a puppy? They are cute, fluffy, and playful. However, don't let those innocent puppy eyes fool you - all puppies grow up to be dogs, and puppies growing up without the benefit of puppy training often grow up to be bad dogs. Here are some easy tips for puppy training to make the transition from puppy to dog easier on both of you. 1. Puppies grow up - act accordingly. Many puppy parents hold off on puppy training because, after all, they are just puppies. They think that puppy antics are incredibly cute. However, every time your puppy does something, remember how big your puppy will be as an adult. While a 10 pound lab puppy might be cute playing tug of war with your pant leg, chances are it won't be nearly as cute when your 100 pound adult lab does the same thing. Basic puppy training means setting guidelines about appropriate behavior from the first day home.
2. Make the crate a second home. Another part of puppy training is to give the puppy his or her own space. The easiest way to do this is with a crate. The crate provides the puppy a place to sleep, a place to keep the puppy safe when you are not around, and an easy way for you to travel. Puppies do not like to go to the bathroom where they sleep, so a crate can be a very useful tool when doing puppy house training. The crate should be large enough that your puppy can stand up, turn around, and lay down comfortably, but not so large that he or she can poop in one corner and lay down in another. Do not leave puppies in the crate for extended periods of time - a puppy can hold his or her bladder for about as many hours as it is months old.
3. Never hit a puppy. It is a common misconception that hitting a puppy is part of puppy training. However, hitting a puppy during puppy training more often than not will lead to only one of two things - a dog that is afraid of you or a dog that is aggressive. Neither is the desired result of puppy training, and this will lead to a dog that does not make a very good pet.
4. Make puppy happy for coming. Getting puppy to come to you when called is one of the first puppy training steps that you should take. Doing this step of puppy training will have many uses - it will allow you to distract puppy from wrongful behaviors, it will allow you to find puppy if it becomes lost, and it can keep puppy from dangers activities like running into traffic. During puppy training, reward puppy every time he or she responds and comes when called. Small treats and lavish praises and pats will teach puppy that coming when called is a good thing.
5. Socialize. An integral part of puppy training is training your puppy the proper behavior around other dogs and people. Take puppy out often, exposing him or her to new situations and new people and pets. Reward the puppy for desired behavior, and reinforce simple commands like sit and stay. Remember to stay calm, as puppy will read your emotions and act accordingly. Starting puppy training early will lead to a lifetime of good times with your dog.

Battersea is home to the Dog’s and Cats home, the New Covent Garden Market and Battersea park, containing 83 hectares of greenery. While the whole of the London underground is crowded and busy, Clapham Junction is the busiest station in the whole of Europe, with trains transporting people to a wide range of destinations.
South West London is the location of Earl’s Court, Fulham, Putney, Wimbledon and Southfields. Earls Court in Kensington and Chelsea has a thriving social atmosphere and is home to the Earls Court Exhibition Centre, one of the country's largest indoor arenas and a popular concert venue.
The area of London best known for its industry is perhaps the South East, with Canary Wharf, the Docklands being home to numerous businesses and huge office blocks for banks and other major industries. The relatively new Docklands Light Rail is fairly prices and offers a quick route to the center of London from the South East. Canary Wharf and the Docklands are comprised primarily of commercial enterprises, so for more of a social and historical atmosphere, we’d recommend Greenwich instead.

Patients enter the program for medication management, life skills training, along with physical and occupational therapy. Janice didn't stay with us long at the Center, several months of group therapy and one-to-one counseling with scheduled follow-up and family support proved to be enough. Biting for puppies is a second nature, but when dogs are around people we have to teach them what's right and wrong. We don't want puppies to accept biting and then when they grow up wound somebody. One of the things any dog owner has to do is train the dog to stop doing it. No one likes a biting dog. Puppies can't actually hurt a person, but they can instill fear of dogs into a child.
One of the things you have to teach your puppy first is the simplest commands like sit, stay, come… These will come into handy when training other more difficult things. The most convenient time to teach a puppy is when it's still young. If your puppy still bites even when it grows up, you run the risk of your animal injuring somebody. You don't want to get your dog put to sleep because of that.
Easy Puppy Training Biting Technique You Can Do
Whenever the puppy bites you or somebody else, show your disapproval in a very obvious way. With a loud command say No!, repeat it many times and also push the puppy away from you. Don't ever get aggressive or intend to inflict pain to the dog. Aggression is only going to make everything worse. After around 2 weeks, your puppy should completely stop with biting.
