Service Dogs?????

I have a few questions to ask about service dogs. This is just plainly to feed my curiosity.
Are service dogs puposefully bred?
Do people source dogs to train from other avenues ? If so where?
What type of dogs are good services dogs?
What do you look for in a good service dog?
Who trains service dogs? (general people or is it like an academy)?
If you were in need of a service dog where would you get one?

Are service dogs puposefully bred? No some breeds are used more often than others, mostly labs, some shepherds. Any dog if properly trained from a young age can become a service dog. Usually a larger dog is chosen as they can be more useful to people with disabilities. I have an 11 1/2 pound mixed breed I am training her to be a service dog, I have multiple sclerosis.

Do people source dogs to train from other avenues ? If so where? This isn't usually done

What type of dogs are good services dogs? Mostly labs and occassionaly Shepherds. Depending on the needs of the person requiring the dog any dog can be trained. Smaller dogs are very useful as seizure dogs and "alert" dogs

What do you look for in a good service dog? Temperment is key. The dog cannot be people or animal aggressive. They need to be of a gentle nature. They also need to be trainable. Some dogs by breeding or nature are difficult to train. You need to look for an alert dog who learns quickly and is a willing learner; not resistant to commands. You also need a dog that is sociable, needs to be able to handle a variety of situations and noises without getting freaked.

Who trains service dogs? (general people or is it like an academy)? There are formal training programs and trainers for Service Dogs and a Service Dog will need to pass the Canine Good Citizen Test as well as Accessibility testing but even the owner can teach the dog the commands they need. I am training my dog but also taking her to formal obedience classes. The obedience classes are a tremendous asset to socialization.

If you were in need of a service dog where would you get one? I am in need of a service dog, my need will increase in time. I am training my own dog.
