How does one get started in training their dog to be a search & rescue dog?
What organization would one contact to get started?
You don't have to give a dog away for it to become a search dog, unless you don't want to train it yourself. Try an online search, most states have a search dog association with contact details for local groups. I found a local SAR organization from an article in the paper, and asked if I could bring one of my dogs along to be assessed. They asked that I brought both and wanted the two, so now I am training them both. One is a mantrailer/cadaver/water search dog and the other is an air scenting/cadaver/water/wilderness search dog. I meet with the group for 1-2 days a week, and then train them by myself daily. It is very interesting work but extremely time consuming and physically and emotionally demanding. The dogs love it though, it's playtime to them.
Feel free to e-mail me if you need help finding a group, or with anything else regarding search dogs.
