Choosing and Potty training your puppy - Havanese

Trying to teach your puppy to "Go Make" can be as simple or as complicated as you choose to make it and the best way is to follow a simple procedure, and most importantly, stick to it. If you alter your methods from time to time, you are only going to confuse your pet and training them will take a lot longer.

Havanese dogs are intelligent and a hypo-allergenic breed which means that they don't shed and are one of the best breeds to select if someone in your household has allergies. Of course, if you have allergies, you should still go spend some time at the pet store with your Havanese to make sure that it does not cause any allergies you have to flare up.

When you are potty training your Havanese, keep in mind that like a child, they will need constant praise when they have done "their business" and rewarded in some way, maybe a small treat or the like.

There are many different tried and tested methods that have been used to potty train dogs but the one that 97% of dog trainers seem to recommend is using something like a dog training bell. These are basically a set of bells that are hung from the door handle and your puppy taps them with their paw when they need to go make.

This may sound a complicated process to teach your puppy but by following the simple instructions below, it can actually be achieved within two weeks and is actually quite straightforward.

Potty training your puppy:

Firstly, you would hang the dog training bells from the door handle that you wish your puppy to use when they need to go outside.

The best time to start training is first thing in the morning when you know your dog really has to make! While stating your "Potty Command", take your dog's paw and gently swat it against the dog training bell. Since they will be needing to make urgently, only guide them to ring the bells a couple of quick times. While doing this, give them words of encouragement such as: "Good boy, good bells" and "Ring the bells, let's go make!".

When you have taken your puppy outside and it has "made", make sure that you praise them and give them a little treat so that they associate ringing the bell and making outside as a positive thing.

Remember that this article is geared around Havanese puppies and as they are small, they will only have a small bladder and will not be able to hold this as long as a bigger dog such as a German Shepherd etc.

Conclusion:

This should achieve maximum results in the shortest amount of time, saving you time and money on new upholstery and carpets and giving you and your dog a happy home experience.

The simplest and most effective way of potty training your puppy would be to start off from the moment you bring them home and use the tried and tested method of dog training bells.

Dog Training advice for you

Dog Training Advice

New dog owners, tend to feel lost with the responsibility of taking care of their new pet and with the added task of training them; this is where sound dog training advice comes handy. Training your dog is important not only to enhance the security of your house, but also to create a happy and dependable relationship between you and your dog. The right dog training advice will teach you how to teach your dog the acceptable behavior for a given situation. Following are a few basic commands that you can start with and dog training tricks on how to get your dog to follow them.

Here are some basic commands

  • Sit: gets the dog to be in the sitting position.

  • Down: this gets the dog to be in a position when all four of its legs are down, touching the floor.

  • Heel: the dog's head or shoulder stays parallel to your left side.

  • Stay: the dog stays in the same position (sit, stand, down) and place when you command.

Here is a step by step list of how you can train your dog:

Step 1: incentive for obedience

If you reward your dog's obedience and likewise punish it for disobeying you, it has been seen that, they are likely to learn faster than any other techniques. This is very effective in the initial stages of the training when you want to teach the basic commands.

Step 2: leash it

You can use the leash to train it to understand and obey the basic commands. This is very helpful and highly recommended especially if you are at a public place.

Step 3: employ a firm voice

When you give instructions or command your dog, it is advised that you do it with a firm voice. However, you must not confuse a firm voice with an aggressive one.

Step 4: getting the dog's attention

It is important at this stage that you know how to keep your dog interested in what you say or do because if the dog's attention is straying it might not internalize what you are trying to train it for. It is simple, you must make sure the dog's attention is on you for it to be able to listen to you and consequently follow your instructions.  One thing that is frequent in any dog training advice is calling it by its name to get its attention. Eventually the dog will naturally correlate your command with looking at you.

Step 5: be consistent

Try and be consistent in your training techniques. That way your dog won't be confused and you will gain more respect from the dog and your training would be more effective. Try and come up with a list of do's and don'ts for it to follow, if it disobeys reward and punish accordingly.

Following the steps related in the above dog training advice can be very simple, if you just be patient with the whole process. Do not expect them to learn everything in a day. Give them time and love and you will end up enjoying the time you spend with your dog.

Puppy Training & Tips

Here are a few tips to help you get started with your new pup. Remember, your pup is still a baby, so be consistent and patient and you will do fine. When you work with your pup, work with a lot of praise (good boy/girl) and treats!!!!!! If you need to correct him/her, say NO in a firm voice and say what you want him/her to do (sit) then praise and give him/her a cookie. The same goes for that dreaded chewing stage, say NO in a firm voice then hand him/her one of his/her toys and praise him/her when they play with the toy. For jumping, say NO DOWN and bring my knee up to knock them off, have him/or sit, then praise them for sitting. Puppies are cute  and it doesn't hurt at this point when they jump on you, but, when they get to be 70 or 80 lbs and knock down an elderly person or small child it will not be cute and someone will get hurt, so it is best to stop that habit now then to wait.

When you do your obedience work, use one-word commands (sit,  heel, here). When you are correcting them use NO as correction then your command word.

Housebreaking: When you first get your pup home, let him/her eliminate outside before bringing him/her in the house. (Don't forget the praise!). At this point, your pup should be able to go 45-60 minutes at a time before needing to go outside. If your pup has been playing a lot with you, he/she may need to go out more often. This also applies, if your pup has had a lot of water. Their attention span is small and they occasionally forget where the bathroom is!!  Always take the pup out the second he/she wakes up. If the pup has been asleep,  carry them out.  If they are just out loose with you, you can say their "name" outside, come let's go outside. Remember, always take pup to same area to eliminate, then, praise them for going. NEVER play with the pup until he/she has eliminated, then go to a different area to play. This will help them know that they don't play in the area they eliminate; they are out there to do a job!! NEVER leave your pup unattended. This is how housebreaking and chewing problems occur.
If you can't have your eyes on them, put him/her in their crate. It is not a punishment to put them in their crates; they learn to feel it is a safe place.

Crate Training: When first start crate training, the pups go out every 30-60 min. and immediately after napping or eating- and this will increase with age and their bladder control. Do not leave food or water in the crate. This will only cause unwanted accidents. Put a sheet or old towel in with your pup. At this point, they are not chewing on them. If they start doing that, you may need to put in newspaper (which they will shred!). They are also used to having toys in their crates. (Kong, hard chew toys, nylabones) At this age, it should be easy to have them eat wherever it is easy for you. They love to eat!! Important thing to remember when crate training – NEVER use the crate as a punishment. Your pup should feel like this is his/her den or safe place.

Leash Work:  When you first start leash work, most pups will resist. Make it fun and only work a couple of minutes. If the pup struggles, let him/her finish their tantrum then in a happy voice say heel and tug a little on the leash as you start to walk. (Use lots of treats)  When you heel, have to pup on your left side. Give the command "sit". Then, say their name and Heel and start walking with your left foot first. If the pup resists while walking, keep walking, tug a little on the leash and say NO heel, pup should start heeling again and you will say GOOD HEEL. You can repeat good heel several times while practicing. When you are ready to stop, slow down a little, stop on left foot first, then the right foot last. Give the command sit; pull up with leash, down with left hand while saying sit. When your pup has finished his/her vaccinations, start them in a puppy obedience class. This is the best way for you to learn obedience work, so you can continue to work well with your pup. It is also good for continued socialization with your pup.

Retrieving Work: Start the 7 wks old pups in the house in a short hallway with bedroom doors closed. This is the easiest way to get them started learning the command "here", and to pick up the bumper. When throwing the bumper for the pup, make sure you get them excited by saying "hey, hey, hey, hup, hup" and let them see the bumper before throwing it low to the ground. Only throw it a couple of feet out and only do this 2-3 times. You still want them to be excited about the bumper when you finish. If you over do it you will make them stale/bored and they will lose interest. When you throw the bumper, make sure they see it and say their name to "send" them. When they have picked up the bumper, say "Good, here, here". Sometimes they drop it on the way back or as they get to you…that is ok as long as they continue to come to you. It is hard at this age with their balance and teething to get the bumper back to you every time. As the pup matures, they will be able to go out further for the bumper, and hold the bumper in their mouths, so be patient and have fun!!!

Please make sure you finish your puppy vaccinations, this is so important, especially if you are going to have your pup around other pets and people. (Yes, the people can carry viruses from their pets to yours), so please be careful. Spring is "Parvo season", so be extremely careful during this time.

Enjoy your pup and give them lots of love!!!!

I am going to Canada! What is there to do?

Yeah, jokes about hockey and dark nights with sled dogs aside, I am going to Vancouver, and then taking the train to Halifax, Nova Scotia, with a few days in Jasper, Winnipeg, Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal and Halifax. Anyone have any cool ideas? This is a once in a lifetime thing. It's my honeymoon!
Oh yeah, and we're stopping off at Niagara Falls. And we're going the whole way by train.

seeing as you're a goth,

Vancouver's got "Sanctuary" - goth club night, long running...

other things in Van:

- if you puff, check out one of the marijuana cafes, in the area of Gastwon and Chinatown.. in Chinatown check out the Sun Yat Sen Gardens (classical chinese style) good shopping on Pender and Keefer sts there.. Hons Won Ton in Chinatown has good cheap Chns food.. Gastown, the old part of town has lots of tourist ships (crap) but a nice walk.. they have a new interactive underground mulit-million dollar museum called storeyum taht's supposed to be fantastical

If you have a taste for the macabre - Science World (very close to train station ) will be showing the partially dissected humans in various poses, dipped in plastic..called Body Worlds...

Most goths I know don't generally dig the beach or mountains - but we've got that too.. lots of shopping.. if you're a girl - you might dig the Betsy Johnson store, off Robson

EDIT:

oh yeah, also in Van you might dig the Aquarium at Stanley Park, whales, sharks, otters, octopi, touchy-feely tidal pools of invertebrates - all sorts a stuff..

Hfx, be sure to pay a visit to "Hell" on gottagen st. also the museum there has displays on both Titanic and the Great Explosion (biggest ever pre Hiroshima)

Uncle Matty Dog Training

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]
uncle matty dog training
Is Uncle Matty Dog Training any good?

I was just wondering if anyone has used this service and what results you got and if it is worth checking into.
Sorry for not including more info, so here ya go.

He is a Labrador / ? mix. Probably Boxer or Great Dane.

He is also 5 months old.
I am reading The Dog Whisperer books and am having good success with them. The problem is he gets over excited with my wife and nips at her. He has made her bleed a few times. When he nips at me I put him on his side and make him submit. it only takes a few seconds to get him to calm down and has almost stopped nipping at me. When my wife tries to make him submit, he fights her quite a lot and she can't get him to stay down.

So really the only thing we need to work on with him is this issue. He is very responsive to almost everything else.

So if you guys have tips for that I would appreciate it!

I have not heard his name for years.

I was in an infomercial for him many years ago with my dog.

I don't think much of him as a trainer, he really was ahead of his time in marketing though and was big here in Southern California for a time. He did use an annoying hight pitch voiced with the dogs that made nails on a chalk board sound good.

I totally love the Thumb loop leash he sells on his website. Its what I use in competition and training for obedience.

http://www.unclematty.com/store/closeup.asp?cid=11&pid=9&offset=1

Here is his website http://www.unclematty.com

ADD: If you are looking for a dog trainer in the Los Angeles area where you can train with your dog, I can give you a link here.
I would NOT send a dog to his "training school" or work with one of his so called "trainers". They become trainers by doing an online class...ay yi yi

I can give you a referral to someone who trained with Bill Koehler.

How do I train my CRAZY disobedient cat!!!?

My cat is adorable and all but he drives me crazy. I don't allow him in the bedrooms because of the fur. He is crazy though....I can't walk around my house without him clawing at my ankles. He climbs all over ALL my furniture. He lays on top of my coffee table, couches, side tables, my televison....No matter how many times i spray him with water or yell or take him off..he hops right back on the table right after.
The kitchen counters, the kitchen table....HE is BAD...he climbs on my dress forms and has ruined them by scratching them up...I think hes playing but he treats my house like his own personal jungle jim. I am an artist and evertime i have my books for school or my supplies on the couch he LAYS right on TOP OF THEM....WHILE IM USING THEM...over and over I take him off and he gets right back on....Im litterally going insane I cant get ANYTHING DONE!

This cat needs to be entertained. Does he have things to play on or chase. You would be amazed with what a ball with a bell in it can do. A tree house would help too giving him a place to get up high and see things with out being on the counters or even try window perches. And buy yourself a red laser pointer and give him a few stretches of chasing that around.

As far as training forget it. you can not train cats the same way as dogs I have tried. But you can try tin foil on the counter, my current cat really does not like the sound of that. Double side sticky tape on fabric works well too

Embarrasing training class stories?

So I just enrolled Bella (My 3 month old puppy) into Puppy Allstar class. Some of the trainers there are actually from Super Dogs (My favorite show at the Calgary Stampede). Anyways. I'm a bit nervous with some of the stuff she'll be learning, cause she's not very good at leave it.

I was just wondering if anyone had embarrassing or funny stories about their dogs in any training classes? Neat to read, and it might make me feel better if she does the same.

Let me know!! Thanks!

Well, the first time I took my dog to a training class was when he was a year old.
Before then, i'd independantly trained him with a few other dogs.
The first class, when we were getting to know the trainer, my dog jumped on his hind legs and tried to knock the trainer over! (she was only 5 feet tall, and on his hind legs, my dog was already taller than her) everyone in the class.
Later that night, we were trying to get our dogs attention with squeaky toys, when she told everyone to be quiet. I didnt realise this at the time, but my dog had gotten the toy away from me, and right when the trainer tried to speak, this extremely loud squack came from my dogs mouth. Everybody looked at us before they all cracked up laughing. I got the toy away and the trainer tried to speak again, again, we heard this loud squeak and it was my dog!
Apparently the toy I had brought contained two squeakers, one of which, he had ripped out of the toy and kept in the back of his mouth.
We were labelled as the squeaky team.
We went on to graduate at the top of our class though =)

Austin Dog Training

An Austin Dog Trainer to the Rescue

By teaching your dog how to behave and correcting their problems you will not only make things easier, but also safer for both your family and pet as well. An Austin dog trainer is the perfect solution to the common problems that dogs have. Maybe you worry about your dog getting outside and running in the road or attacking other animals or people. Some dogs go crazy when they are outside on a leash and drag their owners everywhere or choke themselves up.

It is common for dogs of all ages to need special attention and training. Whether you have recently adopted a puppy or adult dog, or have had your family friend for years there may be some issues that need to be addressed.

One of the most common dog problems that people have is that their dog jumps all over house guests, barks threateningly at the doorbell or guests, chews items that are not supposed to be chew toys such as shoes and furniture. This is where an Austin area dog trainer steps in top the rescue so that you can truly enjoy a well trained, well mannered pet.

There really aren’t and bad dogs, just those who misbehave because they are very nervous, unhappy, or just don’t know any better. All dogs that are happy and comfortable in their homes with their owners, as well as the outside world are safer pets than those who act out in ways that aren’t appropriate.

When you have a properly trained dog they are far less likely to cause trouble or develop habits that are detrimental to their health such as chasing after cars and eating things that are harmful to them. Dog training is a must. Parents spend years teaching their children the correct ways to behave so it only makes sense to train your pet good manners too.

Dog Training Schools

So you've had it up to your here with your dog and they just don't do anything that you try to get them to do. Fear not there are plenty of schools around that can help your pooch learn the ropes of communication so that you and your dog can live peacefully together without all the yelling and negative energy.

So where do you even begin to look for those dog training schools? Any even more important what should you be aware of when you are reviewing each site to see if that school is the right place to have your dog trained?

In this post I am going to be going over some of the things that you will need to understand and look for when choosing dog training schools.

What to look for in dog training schools?

1] The age of your dog will determine the course of action that will be needed. Some trainers will not take a dog while they are in their puppy stages while others will only take puppies. When you're searching around be sure to ask what the age limit is for their training programs.

2] What types of behavior training do they offer in their services? Many times trainers love to try new things out so be sure that your dog isn't the guinea pig for their purposes. Be sure that the trainer has past experience with the behavioral training that you wish to correct before landing your pooch in their care.

3] Do they have a course of action that they expect to use during the training? Try to gather as much knowledge as possible from the dog training schools that they will be using to correct the needed behavior. Many times trainers will have brochures that you can take home to look through to help you make your decision on whether or not their program is needed for your dog.

4] Price of services is always something that you want to take into consideration. With price you should also factor in how much experience the trainer has had with other dogs with same behavior pattern that your looking to correct in your dog. Out of the majority what is their success rate of those trainings?

5] Size of dog and breed. Some dog training schools have a weight limit that they will accept for animals because they may only like to train smaller or larger dogs because they have a higer success rate with those types. The breed of the dog also will determine whether or not the trainer will take on your dog. Some breeds are easier to train than others and this can be used to your advantage to shave off some money on the overally cost. It may also work against you if the breed of dog aggressive or known to resist training.

Now that you have a good ballpark idea of what you need to be looking for when you go out into the wonderful world of dog training my next post will focus on some things that you can do at home to possibly train your dog for free using an easy system before heading out to the dog training schools.

Now that you have a good ball park idea of what you need to be looking for when you go out to choose dog training schools.

Obtaining your dog from a dogs for sale enterprise shows that you are really concerned about the animal and you are aware of the fact that the animals who do not find homes finally end up in an official animal shelter, waiting to be euthanized (for those who are unaware, euthanization means murder). Bringing a dog from dogs for sale to home is always a matter of heart and an inherent concern for animals because if you are not caring about the animal, then the helpless animal might have nobody else to take care of it. Dog Behavior Training Techniques-Lets Get It Done

Like anything else in this world, dogs come in various sizes, colors, paws, tails, fur, teeth and others.

Dog Behavior Training Techniques save you and your dog stress

Due to some unscrupulous breeders and unmindful owners, a few breeds within the terrier group have developed rather notorious reputations. This group has a variety of both behavioral and physical-a history of hunting assistance often being the only regular bond among some of the hound breeds.

This group houses the sheepdogs and cattle dogs, including the amiable collie breeds and those regal kinds, the corgis. Unfortunately, these are the dogs you're likely to find at the local shelter or dog pound, often the result of accidental breeding between two un-sterilized dogs.

This is the list of dog Herding Breeds according to The American Kennel Club:Australian Cattle Dog, Australian Shepherd, Bearded Collie, Beauceron, Belgian Malinois, Belgian Sheepdog, Belgian Tervuren, Border Collie, Bouvier des Flandres Briard, Canaan Dog, Cardigan Welsh Corgi, Collie, German Shepherd Dog, Old, English Sheepdog, Pembroke Welsh Corgi, Polish Lowland Sheepdog, Puli, Shetland Sheepdog, Swedish Vallhund. Some indiscriminate breeders have inflamed congenital problems by careless over-breeding, and have created unstable temperaments through simple neglect.

This is the catchall group for breeds that did not seem to fit in elsewhere, from the cuddly Bichon Frise, a little too big to be considered a toy, to the striking Dalmatian and the stunning but difficult Chow Chow. A retired racer should be tested with small children or other pets, as some of these dogs make a habit of chasing them as they have chased mechanical rabbits in their earlier career.

Today the slow, prodding bloodhound is usually used by law enforcement to track renegades or missing persons. Children and dogs make potentially blissful partners, but choosing a dog that actually likes to play with children is your best bet in orchestrating a match made in heaven.

When these dogs bite, they don't let go. These breeds generally and originally assisted hunters in the field with either excellent scenting abilities or incomparable speed. That's part of the fun.

The national symbol of England, known for its strength and determination, it has been out of work since bull-baiting went out of fashion in the late 19th century.

The Anatomy Of A Canine

But an absence of sweat glands on the canid's skin forces it to rely on other means. Like all mammals, the canid family is able to control body temperature through various physical functions. Hairless. Pendant Ears. Wire-Haired. How would our dog eat?

Take their mechanical grinding machine into your consideration too- their teeth. In some breeds, such as Shelties, the button ear is not always natural and must be trained from puppy hood for the proper tipped look.

You might as well read the information about it. Pricked Ears. How about their hearing? It is, of course, essential, especially when you're giving your commands. Button ears can been seen in Shetland Sheepdogs and many terriers.

What Is It About The Pug Dog?

Have you ever wondered why so many people are choosing the pug over any other dog to own as a pet? First impressions aren't really all that appealing when you think about it. Some people would even go as far as saying that they look like they have just run flat into a wall and that's how they're gotten their appearance. So why do people still choose the pug over any other…

Don't Judge A Book By Its Cover

It it widely known that pug dogs have one of the best personalities out evry domestic dog breed in the world. Experts believe that they are especially good for young children as they are unlikely ever to bite or attack in any way, shape or form. The fact that they are a very hardy dog also makes them a good choice for families with small children. They love to be played with and thrown around as long as you are not too rough with them ofcourse. in fact they are one of the only smaller breeds of dogs that can take a bit of playful agression.

The trait that the pug dog is most commonly known for however is its constant loving nature to every living creature. "The wouldn't hurt a soel". This is something most pug owners will tell you when you ask them what it's like owning a dog such as a pug.

Things To Be Wary Of For New Pug Dog Owners

The first and most important thing that new pug owners should be wary of is the fact that pugs can have problems breathing at times. It is important to keep them cool at all times, especially in summer. It's a good idea to cary a water bottle with you everytime you walk you pug down to the park. Better still, fill up an empty water-spraying device like the ones from detergent bottles and whenever you see that your pug is becoming dehydrated and you notice it is panting heavier than usual, spray your dog on the face a few times. I guarantee he/she will love it!

The second thing to look out for as a pug owner is their bad smell. Pugs have different glands than most other dogs and therefore give off a more distinct smell. It is suggested that you wash your pug twice a week and purchase a fragrance of some sort to couteract the smell. This is especially needed if you are deciding to keep your pug dog indoors.

How To Train Your Dog Not To Bark

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]
how to train your dog not to bark
How do you train your dog not to attack other dogs?

I set up a play date for my lab puppy and just as the other dog got near her she started to bark viciously and growl. I tried to gain control of her but her nails scratched me up really bad.It is the same with walking her,she is fine walking until another dog passes by she'll get really mean and growl and bark. What do I do?

Your dog needs to know who is in control. Try getting your puppies' attention by hitting its body, of course not hard but hard enough that your dogs attention is at you. If that doesn't work grab and hold your dog towards the ground. The hold should be firm and place one of your hands on the neck or collar. If your dog tries to move just hold it there longer and repeatly say "NO".

Crate Training your Dogs - Ultimate Dog Training Method

They say that the Crate Training method is the most effective way to train dogs. How do we crate train our dogs? Is it harsh to confine a dog or an adorable puppy in solitary confinement so to speak? Crate Training was once seen as cruel and inhumane but it has gain popularity in recent years. Crate Training can be a useful tool to train a puppy or even a stubborn old dog.

The crate can be a place of sanctuary and security when needed by our dogs. There are people who find success in doing crate training but there are also dog owners that find it so hard to do crate training with their dogs. A simple reason why this happens could be a dog’s past negative experience, such as being left in a small cage or crate for a long period of time, or having the crate used as a punishment. We need to fully understand that inorder to be successful in crate training we need to let our dogs understand that the crate is for his sanctuary, retreat or his den.

What are the advantages of crate training? The thought of leaving your dog alone in your house having a peace of mind that he won’t destroy any personal or household items would be one very good advantage of crate training, especially for those dog owners who are always out. Whenever you leave your home you will be assured that somehow your dog will not ruin anything inside your house since he is confined in his crate You can also attain a better relationship with your dog by anticipating and preventing unwanted behaviors whenever you are not around to supervise him.

With Crate Training, housebreaking your dog will be much easier and faster. A dog can now have a safe and cozy place that he can call his home. Dogs naturally have that instinct where they have to seek out for a shelter. Your dog can now have security and privacy while relaxing in his crate after a strenuous activity. After you successfully crate train your dog, he will know when to go outside his cage to do elimination. You will be having a peaceful environment once you crate train your dog because he will have fewer behavioral problems like unnecessary barking and chewing.

Another advantage of crate training is during traveling, it would be easy and safe for your dog and also for you since inside the crate he will not be able to play with you while you are driving. It will also serve as a mobile indoor dog house which you can move from one location to another whenever you want. Crate training helps teach your dog to have bladder and bowel control. He learns to hold it and go at right scheduled times, instead of going whenever he feels like it.

I would like to share to you the wonderful advantages of crate training and also the steps on how to do this. And you will then know why crate training is the ultimate dog training method.

K-9 Training in Indo Tibetan Border Police, Border Security Force and Central Reserve Police Force

National Training Centre For Dogs

Indo Tibetan Border Police

Police/Paramilitary Dog

Chapter 1

Police/CPMF Working Dog Program

Section I

Intorduction

1 Purpose

This book explains policies, procedures, and responsibilities for the direction, management, and control of the Police and Paramilitary K9 Squad that includes ITBP,BSF,CRPF,CSF and civil Police organizations.

This treatise provides extensive guidance, standards, and information regarding training and utilization of K9 teams, controlled substances and explosive training aids, veterinary care, kennel facilities, dog equipments and points to be kept in mind while conducting inspection . It provides the commander with the information needed to maintain a proficient and operationally effective Police/CPMF working dog squad.

2. Explanation of abbreviations and terms

Abbreviations and special terms used in this pamphlet are explained in the consolidated glossary.

3. Historical basis

Dogs have been used by people to help protect themselves and their property since ancient times. Trained dogs have been used by most of the world’s military forces since the first military units were organized. The actual utility of a working dog had been for the first time tested on a large scale by the German Forces during the Second World War followed by the utilization of dogs for the war effort by the allied forces. From these ancient beginnings, the dog training has been continuously refined to produce a highly sophisticated and versatile extension of the soldier’s own senses. Even the most complex machines remain unable to duplicate the operational effectiveness of a properly trained dog. The dog’s unique capabilities are used by the police and CPMFs to very broadly encompass the following areas:

a. Secure human life, installation and property.

b. Help enforce laws .

c. Increase the effectiveness of the combat support.

4. The role of Paramilitary/Police Dog

Like other highly specialized items of equipment, dog’s complement and enhance the capabilities of the soldier. When used by organisations, K9 teams enable the men to perform their mission more effectively and, in many cases, with significant savings of manpower, time, and money. K9 teams also provide a strong psychological deterrent to potential offenders and ANEs (anti-national elements). The dog is tolerant of people and can be used in almost any area of an installation including vehicles, parade grounds airfields, housing, shopping, industrial areas, railway stations etc. Patrol dog teams are used with law enforcement and security patrols to enhance the rear area protection capability. Dogs can be effectively used to search, scout, track and observe from listening or observation posts. Detection dog teams are trained to detect controlled substances or explosives used to construct explosive devices that threaten, damage, or destroy personnel or property. The use of dogs in search and rescue (SAR) is another upcoming though nascent field in India. The K9 team’s specialized capabilities make it one of the most effective tools available to the commander for combat support, security, and law enforcement. As the only live equipment employed in security endeavours, the dog’s continuing proficiency depends on realistic daily training and care. Skills which are not practiced or used can be lost. The assignment of dogs and handlers together as active teams is critical to their continuing effectiveness.

5. Quality assurance

Every level of command within the organisation has specific responsibilities for making sure that the K9 program is properly established and efficiently managed. This includes ensuring that operational units are provided with trained dogs and handlers to form teams, and the necessary equipment and facilities to maintain effective local K9 programs. The constant honing and maintenance of professional skills of dogs and their handlers is a continuous process, therefore the importance of regular mock drills and dry runs is paramount.

Section II

Understanding Police/Paramilitary Working Dogs

1. Advantages of dogs

A dog can be trained to respond consistently to certain sensory stimuli (odors, scents, and so forth) to alert the handler. If the dog’s reaction to selected stimuli is always rewarded by the handler, the reward reinforces the dog’s behavior, motivating the dog to repeat the actions. A properly trained handler learns to recognize the dog’s reactions and to recognise the source because of the characteristics of the reaction learned during training.

2. Superiority of senses

Under almost any set of circumstances, a properly trained dog can smell, hear, and visually detect movement better than a person. Trained dogs respond to selected stimuli and alert their handlers to that which they have been trained to detect. The dogs’ detection abilities can be inconsistent; however, some variance is normal and must be considered when evaluating a dog’s performance.

3. Identifying Role for the K9 Squad

The following should be considered when evaluating the possible use of K9 squads:

a. The task to be performed.

(1) Deterrence. The obvious presence and well–published activities of the K9 Squads can successfully deter ANEs, trespassers, vandals, violent persons, and so forth.

(2) Detection. If the desired task is to detect unauthorised or suspect individuals, the dog-handler team should be assigned to a location and during a time of day or night when visual, sound, and odor distractions are at a minimum. Examples include patrolling of shopping or industrial areas after normal operating hours, patrolling a housing area during duty hours or at night, patrolling an airfield or aircraft maintenance area after normal duty hours, or searching a supposedly unoccupied building. Narcotics and explosives detector dogs (EDDs) are trained to perform their detection skills under an extremely wide range of conditions so that location and time of day are not critical factors. Detection of victims during natural and man made disasters is another task performed by SAR dogs. Patrol dogs also are trained to apprehend suspects at or near a crime scene, stop those who may attempt to escape, and to protect civilians from harm. Some dogs may be able to track suspects who have left the scene of a crime.

Section III

Starting a Police/Paramilitary Working Dog Squad

1. Determining need

The specific needs must be determined and the costs of the program must be justified. There is no easy formula to determine the number and type of K9 teams needed at any particular installation or area. The decision process involves a thorough risk and crime analysis, and an accurate evaluation of the requirements of the entire project. Normal, emergency, and contingency conditions will be analyzed for all security, law enforcement, and combat support missions.

Some of the factors to consider when determining the need for establishment of K9 squad could include:

(1) The unit mission.

(2) The size of the unit’s area of responsibility.

(3) The size of the population or the number of personnel to be served by the unit.

(4) Incident rates for appropriate crimes against property (for example, housebreaking, burglary, vandalism), crimes of violence (for example, assault, rape, bomb threats, and incidents), and drug usage (criminal cases, quantity of substances seized, level of self–admitted drug abuse, urinalysis test results, and so forth).

(5) Present capability and the commitment of a portion of the manpower resources as dog (K9) handlers.

(6) The types of terrain or in the probable areas of deployment.

(7) The types of combat support missions for which teams can be used.

(8) The number of installation facilities or areas that can be more adequately protected because of the availability or use of K9 teams.

(9) The capabilities and limitations of teams when assigned to certain types of duties.

(10) Additional considerations or guidelines to use in determining the need for a dog program or for determining the number of dogs needed in a program.

(11)Probably the most difficult obstacles to overcome in order to establish a K9 unit or concern the cost and construction of required kennel facilities. Kennel facilities should be constructed before dogs begin to arrive. Therefore, planning requires an early commitment to provide resources and construct the necessary kennel facilities. When planning for a K9 program, commanders should weigh that the advantages of adding dog teams to the force and that the associated costs are justified by reasonable expectations of reduced crime rates and increased security. Accordingly, the justification should consider such factors as the following:

(1) Increasing the effectiveness of the General Duty Troops.

(2) The additional areas that can be protected using K9 teams.

(3) The additional tasks that can be done with K9 teams that cannot be done, or cannot be done as well, with present manpower and equipment resources.

2. Kennel construction approval

Once the need and justification for a K9 squad are established, the commander initiates a request to engineering branch/CPWD to develop the kennel facility design. Extensive guidance on kennel design and location that will meet local conditions and requirements are also explained in this book in the following chapters. The standard designs significantly lower the cost of kennel facilities. Cost must be kept as low as possible to ensure that funding can be provided; therefore, kennels should not use expensive construction materials when less expensive materials accomplish the same purpose. (Some features such as the separation between kennels, ventilation, and safe electrical connections are necessary.) Before the kennel design has been finalised, the veterinarian should be consulted to ensure that minimum

veterinary requirements are included in the final design. After kennel designs are completed and construction costs estimated, the kennel project is submitted for approval and funding to Directorate General. The request for authorisation for establishment of K9 squad must include the statement that the commitment has been made to fund and build kennels.

It has been proven a lot of times that their presence is really entertaining with all the jumping, running in circles and some tricks to entertain their owner. For many, it is more than entertainment but peace and friendship to their pet dog.

With all these great benefits, many pet owners have treated a dog like a real member of their family and they are most willing to train a dog to act properly or send their dogs to a professional dog trainer. Dog training is not hard at all especially if you are training your own pet. It will only take a lot of dedication, perseverance, patience and love to your dog or of its kind.

I have listed below some simple and practical tips to follow to train a dog whether training a dog is a profession or just a passion.

1. Teach a dog as early as possible or while they are puppies. Like humans, it will be a lot easier to train young dogs of tricks and rules since they got vacuum memories and you will be the ones to fill in first.

2. Make them feel they are loved. Dogs have a strong sense not only of smell but of your feelings hence; maintain a positive attitude towards them at all times. Being mad or angry would be easily detected on your voice while giving commands; eye contact and simple gestures.

3. Train them one command at a time. Make sure that your dog has mastered one command before moving on to the next to avoid confusion. It will also help that you teach the basic first before trying to train him on complicated moves or tricks.

4. Use the reward system. Like any animals, dogs love appreciation and love rewards too! You may incorporate giving him food or praises if he did the right thing. This will also make the dog master the moves faster once he recognizes the things he is applauded to.

5. Have consistency. Traditional teachings of dogs should be done in a constant velocity and at the same pacing to avoid stress and confusion. Dogs can adapt easily if the giving of commands are consistent, in the same direction and even the same props or materials.

6. Have one person at a time to train the dog. Dog easily recognizes their master hence; it is vital that one person will train the dog first and once he has fully recognize that person you could eventually introduce other trainer one at a time.

Having a dog at home is indeed fun especially if he is well behaved, knows where to pee and careful not to break anything while playing inside the house. They are good companion too and it is always possible to walk with them without a leash with a good dog training programs.

Advantages of Training Your Cat

Advice on the advatages of training your cat

Despite all of the stereotypes, kitties are not completely self-sufficient creatures. They still need their human families to feed and water them, and to shelter them. And, despite all of their protests against it, kitties need their humans to love them just like any other animal. Adopting a cat can be a very good feeling, as well as a major challenge at times. We want our family life to be calm and warm, not frantic and frustrating, so we need all of the members, including the small furry ones, to be at their best behavior. Training your cat can ensure that you have a gentle, loving pet that does not eat your furniture and pee in your houseplants. Training your cat does not only protect it from potential threats, but keeps your belongings safe from destruction as well.

Cats claw, scratch, bite and chew for many reasons. If they are doing these things to food items or their cat toys, that is great, but many times they will find something else. Cats that chew on the new carpet or the electrical cords are not only destroying your possessions, they are also endangering their own lives. Kittens will chew on things for the same reasons that puppies and human babies do- they are discovering their world, as well as teething. Give them substitutes and reward them for chewing on the right items. If an older cat has suddenly developed a urge to gnaw on things other than food or usual toys, then consider whether he is bored, or if it is possible that he has a nutritional inbalance.

Poorly trained kitties will often start using the entire house as their personal litter box. If you have ever walked in the house when the litter box needs to be changed, you know how disgusting that can truly be. If your cat is using items like your bed or favorite chair to potty on, he might be sending you a message. Does he dislike the new litter you bought? Did you move his litter box? Or, have you started spending too much time with that guy in 2A that stomps his feet at kitty when you are not in the room? Although most cats will train well to the box and never have issues, some are more stubborn and this behavior can often be the deal breaker for many families.

A well-trained cat will charm and amuse your guests when they come to your home. He will make your days seem warmer and brighter. Because he knows what is expected of him, he will not have as much stress, leading to a calmer more easily controlled cat. Calmer cats are more affectionate because they are not nervous or high-strung. Training your cat allows him to focus on good behaviors and the things that make a cat's life a good one; napping, eating and stalking dust motes in the sunny patch by the window.

As a cat owner myself, I have learned the benefits of training my cats because it just makes my life much easier. My cats are well-behaved and are very passionaite these traits are wonderful and I hold them dear to my heart.
