Well, this is actually a different situation than most may have. This dog, we've just rescued from being put down at a kill shelter, has apparently been spoiled like crazy, even though it ahd never been indoors and had never had a bath in 6 years. Still, it must have gotten lots of attention or something because everyone will be sleeping at night and all of a sudden the basset hound will start barking at 4 in the morning or 5 in the morning wanting attention. It doesn't know when to stop. It'll do it for hours. Everyone has said to ignore it and that giving in is the WORST thing to do because it'll think that by barking it will get it's way. So someone insisted a no bark collar.

Sure, doesn't mean it's any good. There are alternatives. ANYBODY can slap 'PRO' in front of their name. Remember, you don't NEED schooling to become a dog trainer.

what would be the best type of training collar for a dog under 10lbs?

i want them to learn not to bark. ive been told that a shock collar is good. but i want to know what kind i should get for a small dog.
or to be more humane... a dog silencer.

If you do get a shock collar. . . what I would actually do is get the kind with a remote instead of the kind that your dog's barking is just supposed to set off.

It takes a bit more effort on your part, I know, but then you can control when/how strongly the dog gets shocked. Try it out on yourself as well -- that way you'll know exactly what levels equal what level of sensation. A lot of the automatic ones will get set off by all sorts of things other than barking (regardless of what they say. . . it can be hard to differentiate), and this way you can also use it if your dog is doing something else that you don't want it to be doing. Your dog's not getting zapped unless you say so, as opposed to if the little box says so. Unless you're very trigger happy, it's pretty hard for your dog to get "scorched" accidentally.

I'd also advise getting one that has a tone-only option, as you may find that just the noise gets you the results you want once your dog associates the little beepy sound with an upcoming shock.

On a side note. . . I highly doubt my dog would care one bit about high-pitched noises or funny smells, at least, and even the collar is even hit-or-miss on occasion. She's VERY persistent when she wants to be -- shocks or no shocks. I sometimes just have to pick her up and carry her off (whining at me all the way!) until whatever's outside goes away. I can all but guarantee she'd hurt herself if I didn't have control over what the collar does.
