How do I train adopted dog to come to me when he runs away?
Day 3. Our beautiful new yellow lab rescued from the shelter ran out the door today and we could not recapture him until he was cornered. Thank goodness he had his harness still on. Need to help him learn to come to us when he is loose in case this happens again. Any pointers would be appreciated. He is 1. 5 years old, neutered and belonged to a family who said he need more time than they had. Lovely dog in personality and social skills - with our kids and other dogs. Loves to chase cats. Found this out today! Afraid he might get hit by car!
You'll have to take him to training and work on this. Coming to you when you call will come with time too. The dog doesn't know you well.
Dogs also like to play chase. If you are running after the dog it may think you are playing rather than trying to capture him. My dog (he is very skittish) doesn't come when I call him and he can really outrun me. I found that if I make a loud noise to get his attention - like clapping - and then run in the other direction he will actually chase me!!! This isn't ideal but it might work in the meantime.
Cesar Millan also addresses this issue in the Dog Whisperer. His recommendation is to not chase the dog for the reason above but rather try to "herd" the dog in the direction you want to go. Basically you will have to try to be in front of the dog and redirect it. I've seen him do it but it's never worked for me. The dog is just too darn fast!!!
After training and consistent follow through, length of time with you, and as he ages, this problem will probably pass.
