thank you
We have never used a crate to train our dogs, but you need to be very diligent to be successful. Young puppies need to go to the bathroom every couple of hours. In addition, they need to go around fifteen minutes after eating or drinking. Taking them out right after they have consumed food or water means they are more likely to go potty outside. Keep the puppy on a leash outside and as soon as s/he starts to go, say a word, like "potty," "pee," "poop" etc and praise lavishly. Having a favorite treat that the puppy only gets as a reward for going outside is a good idea.
If you catch the puppy going inside, immediately scoop him/her up and take her outside. The puppy should stop going when you pick him up. Once outside, wait to see if the puppy starts to go again and then repeat command/praise. Try not to yell when you find the puppy going in the house as you do not want him to start to hide to do his business. The best idea is to keep a leash on your puppy and hold onto it so you can always catch him in the act. Puppies quickly learn that the only way they get a reward is if they go outside.
Puppies bladders mature slowly, so fully house-breaking your dog may take awhile, but I can tell you that my 14-month old Golden has not had an accident in the house since he was 5 months old (got him at 3 months). Good luck.
