How do you use a clicker to train pets?

I'm getting a pet rat and wanted to know how I can use a clicker to train them.
For example, when do I use the clicker - when giving them the treat, before they get the treat ect...

And also, what tricks can I teach rats to do?

The basics of clicker training are click, then treat. Then you look for a certain behavior, click, then treat.
