Dog Obedience Training - Dog Behavior Training

The addition of a new puppy to your family is an exciting event. A puppy brings joy and never ending fascination. But, it is easy to get caught up in all the excitement and forget that your new dog also brings with him the responsibilities that go with being a dog owner. Every year thousands of dogs are abandoned by their owners because they can no longer handle them. The dogs have become a nuisance, uncontrollable or dangerous to society. But, things do not have to end this way. These tragedies can be easily prevented by following a few simple rules of responsible dog ownership.

While your new puppy quickly becomes a member of your family, it is important to understand that dogs are not humans and attempting to treat them as such will only confuse your dog. By nature dogs are pack animals. Every pack has a leader, commonly referred to as the "alpha" dog. When the dog enters your family, he is looking for leadership from the alpha of the group. It is very important to establish your dog's status in the pack early on. Your new dog has to look to you for guidance. If you begin to treat your dog as an equal, he will sense the lack of leadership in the pack and attempt to take over this role. A lot of common problems such as dog aggression and dog biting can be traced back to this lack of leadership. If your dog growls at you or tries to bite you when you attempt to take away his toy, he is doing it because he thinks that he is higher up than you in his pack. Why does he think this? Because by treating him as a human, this is exactly what you have conveyed to him.

Dog behavior training plays an important role in establishing your leadership. Something as simple as training your dog to sit can have a profound impact on your dog's behaviour. How? You are commanding your dog to sit and he knows that if he obeys your command he will be rewarded with a tasty treat. This establishes the very important, but powerful dynamic of the dog and his master.
