I need help for training my dog?

I adopted an amazing puppy back in Feb. and he is now about 7 mos. He is probably the smartest dog I've ever owned and its very simple to teach him sit, lay, speak. But I don't know how to teach him to stay or don't chew. I don't want to pay the price for a dog training class because I know Diesel, my dog, can learn if I myself learn how to teach him. I want to be able to take him outside without him running off and I want to come into the house knowing my clothes and shoes are safe. Please help =)

If he is as smart as you say, you will have lots of fun clicker training him. At this age, he is entering puberty, so he will probably be a bit more rambunctious and defiant. Be patient, keep the rules the same for him, and be sure he has access to good chew toys.

Give him attention for having the right toys, not the wrong ones (i.e., shoes, paper towels, etc.) And of course, neuter him if you havent' already.

Add: Ah, clicker training, I love it! A clicker is a kid's noise-maker toy, sounds like a cricket. When a dog is doing something right, you 'click' and give the dog a treat. The dog hears the click and thinks 'wait, what did I just do, I got a click, I want another click' and tries to repeat the behavior. Of course, the dog has to learn that 'click' means food, you don't just start clicking a dog. You 'load the clicker.' A click is just a unique noise that really stands out, you can use a verbal marker like 'yes' instead. Clicking a behavior requires that our timing is really good, so we're paying very close attention to the dog.

Dog Training Price

Do you know a reasonablly priced dog boarding and training school in san antonio? I have a lab pup in need.?

I have a lab puppy that needs basic obedience training. Looking for somewhere I can drop her off to be trained. I found one at The Palms but its $850.

You are the one that needs most of the training - I never recommend anyone ever drop their dog off to be trained. I have been training and trialing dogs and people to train dogs for over fifty years and this is the LAST thing I would ever recommend. This will be an utter waste of time and money and who knows what will be done to the poor dog. A good 90% of dog training is the owner learning to train and interact with the dog - the dogs learn very fast but owners are not terribly adept at being consistent with their interaction and always tend to think in terms of people interaction rather than canine interaction. Please don't waste your time and money and potentially leave the dog open to abusive techniques - they ALL sound good -- that is their JOB, to sound good. There are a number of training alternatives in SA.
