Train Dogs

train dogs
How do people train special dogs?

Not special as in mentally challenged, special as in dogs who can sniff stuff, like drugs, alcohol, large amounts of money, ect. I was watching a show about a dog sniffing large amounts of money and thought about it. So, how do they train them? I think it is amazing what they can do.
thats awesome kaper. hopefully he/she gets a lot of drugs out of the streets.

Most are trained much as any dog should be trained. It just needs to be taken to a more dependable, detailed, and sometimes complex level.

It helps to choose or breed a dog likely to be good at the skills needed. Beagles, for example, will be sniffing everything -- the part the humans need to teach is alerting the human to a particular smell -- drugs, termites in a house, fruits and vegetables in bags at the airport, etc.

Often a reward suited to the dog and the behaviors needed is chosen -- treats, a quick game of tug, even a chance to perform an already-trained behavior, as the work progresses.

Then, the dog is set up for success, behaviors are taught, then shaped and/or chained together as needed. In the case of a sniffing job, alerting to a particular smell (often by just sitting down) is what gets rewarded.
