What is the most effective way of training your dog to walk beside you and not pull on the lead?

I have a Jack russell cross and it pull on the lead, what is the most effective way to stop this? My friend who has an american bulldog also has this problem, should we use the same method?
Any methods and i will be very grateful. Thank you.

Have you considered the simpleLEASH? It uses a safe correction stimuli when your pup pulls too hard, and it really is effective. I've seen it in action.
