best service dog lab or golden retriever?
I am getting a service dog. The training facility has labs and golden retrievers. I need to know which is best for me.
I would prefer that it not shed much (so I don't leave too much hair at a friends house), and is the most allergy friendly for others who might be around him. I might put a shirt on him if we are in an enclosed space like an airplane.
I am willing to bathe and use the furminator often. But can either dog be bathed often? Or how can I reduce shedding and allergies for others when I go out?
I would personally prefer the lab as short hair fits me better. I think we are leaning toward a lab. But which would be best?
I am not worried about hair at home. Just other places and other people's allergies.
I think I'll get a lab.
I am also very surprised your program is suggesting the possibility that you can pick what breed you would prefer before you even meet the dogs that are available. I also agree that breed does not matter as much as making a good match.
Don't fixate on bathing your dog too often, THAT should not be a primary concern. Be open minded and meet the animals they have in their facility and you will know what animal will be best for you.
They will educate you in how to handle your animal in areas such as Airplanes, they will most likely suggest a vest, NOT a shirt...In the years of my working with service dogs and numerous flights with handicapped individuals we have been fortunate enough to have never encountered anyone claiming to have allergy issues with any of the dogs. It does happen but they can teach you how to cope with that.
Be open minded. get what is best for you, this is why whenever possible to work with a trainer that can be objective and not blinded by trivialities like fur color when choosing what animal is best suited to work with a new owner....
...yes its great to have a handsome animal proudly standing by your side, but isnt it MORE important to have a loyal companion that knows how to be there and always be willing to help you to make your life less inconvenienced ?
