How do I begin leash training a 9 month old dog?

I am talking about the kennell dog we just got 2 weeks ago.She has never been on a leash before. And it seems to be a pretty traumatic thing when I've tried. So I 'm scarred to push it. Any ideas?

Make the leash a positive experience for her. Normally, I don't recommend treat-training of any kind, but you may want to use treats for the first few times along with lots of praise. She's going to need gallons of praise!!

First, simply leave the leash on the floor (you should ignore it as if it's not even there and watch her from your peripheral) and allow her to sniff it and investigate it, but don't allow her to bite or play with it. If she checks it out, praise her for it. If she doesn't go near it, try putting a treat near it. Do this several times with a treat, then without--again, praise her if she investigates.

Then, tie the leash around your waist so it dangles where she can be near it. Again act as if it's not there. Praise her for any investigation or curiosity. Next, try calling her to you. Don't go to her with the leash. You want her to come to it. If she seems wary, keep trying. Use a treat if you must. Then carry the leash in your hand and go through the routine again. It's going to take time and patience!! Anytime she even remotely investigates, PRAISE!

You can see where I'm going here...ultimately, you're trying to get her to see the leash as something innocuous yet positive. Work in stages until you can get the leash clipped to her collar. When you are finally able to do this, just clip it and immediately unclip it, praising her again for something even that simple.

If you are still having trouble, I suggest you find a good trainer in your area. You can locate a good one by going to www.dogpro.org.

Good luck, and remember to be patient above all things with her!
