Dog Training Chewing

How do I stop my new dog from chewing everything?

We adopted a 1 year old terrier mix/chihuahua from the SPCA. He is a good natured dog and I don't really want to spend a lot of money training this dog. Is there a way to get the dog to stop chewing on everything? I discipline him but it doesn't seem to work. It is beginning to cost us money, and I am not willing to continue on this path too much longer. Any good advice well appreciated, thanks.

Some dogs are very easy to train.. get a book or google.
My newest dog has been impossible to trust completely.
I crate trained her. The crate is never a punishment. You crate train with treats and it is her safe place.
She doesn't so much chew expensive things, but things that could kill her or cost me a fortune in vet bills.... so, she stays in the crate when no one is home.
