My dog is agrressive to other dogs, not people. She barks, growls and leaps forward. How do we train her?
We have a neighbor with a dog and is willing to help. But her dog lunges forward when our dog starts barking or growling. We were able to get our dog to walk by her dog and not pay attention to it. But she will not get closer without going nuts. We tried a trainer that uses electronic collars, but that does not work with socializing. She is very good with people.
She is a Lowchen and she is 5 years old. I love "It is me or the dog" . We can get her to walk by the dogs, still with a bit of grumbling. But I would love for her to greet the dogs socially without anger or frustration. We got her very close to the neighbor dog, but as soon as he made a move she escalated way more than he did. There is a basset hound that barks but acts submissive down the road that we may be able to train with. We also have some friends with a shepherd like dog that may be able to work with us.
There are two trainers especially that I admire. One is Brenda Aloff and the other one is Patricia McConnell. I have gone to two Aloff's seminars and she deals with dog to dog aggression. I am working on buying every thing that from their books and DVD's on these two trainers.
First you need to work on your foundation training with your dog. Without that you will not get far with your training with the aggression. My rottie will be perfectly fine if the other dog is calm, but if they lunge at him, he will react. You would not use an electronic collar on my rottie with his temperament. It would do more harm than good and I refuse to give them pain to get them to do what we want.
You need to work on attention with your dog. You need to learn how to do the Be Still Cue, and you need to learn how to do the Back Aways. This is the Brenda Aloff stuff. She has a book called Get Connected with Your Dog and it comes with a DVD on how to do these. Amazon.com is your cheapest. $32 and no shipping charges. Its a big book. Lots of illistrations. You need to learn how to switch your dog from hind brain to front brain. Very interesting stuff. I would be working on the foundation stuff, before I would ever test them on another dog. Steve White (trainer) uses a tap root for practicing behaviors, so I have my clients use the same thing. People think that you have to spend alot of time in training, but with the tap root, each behavior is like 1 minute long, but the repretitions is like 20-30 in that minute. Everything comes back to Attention. I am really happy on the method. All postitive reinforcement. Dog's are just amazing creatures. It's why I love training so much.
