I'm having a tough time with leash training my dog. What has worked for you? Can you recommend any resources?
When you start leash training your dog one problem that you will run into is that your dog is not going to like it at all. You will have to spend a good deal of time getting the dog used to the Gentle Leader. It will also appear that your dog is wearing a muzzle. This might give the impression that your dog is aggressive.
But once the dog is used to the Gentle Leader, you will find that the walks are much easier and enjoyable.

Please, bear all of your thought into this. If your a dog expert then that will be awesome. My dog is the nicest Beagle/Jack Russell you will meet. But when he's being punished he retreats under a table and becomes viciously defensive----like bearing teeth and growling. Even snapped at me. I want to solve this but I know that this is my own fault.
See, sometimes when the dog does something awful...We resort to a spanking which is painful for both me and him. I am very ashamed of doing this. I know this won't happen if we try other methods but what I fear is that if I go another way with my punishments, then he won't know how to measure how bad one is to another. Please show me a good way on how to punish them well and if this change in behavior could be from a disease or, most likely, me.
And please don't preach to me how bad it is to hit my dog, I feel awful enough as it is. He is about 2 years old.
Your dog will forgive you quickly if you quit hurting him, so step 1: don't punish him physically any more.
I highly recommend that you sign up for an obedience training class. Not only will you and the dog learn something, but you will change the nature of your relationship from the negative (punishing bad behavior) to the positive (rewarding good behavior). You will learn to teach him what TO DO instead of what NOT TO DO.
Good news - a Jack/Beagle mix is a very smart dog, and he will learn quickly.
