Tips on training my 13 week old cocker spaniel x poodle.?

I have a 13 week old black 'spoodle or cockapoo' as they are called in the Designer Dog world and I would like to get some tips on training him. I will be enrolling him in Puppy Classes in a couple of weeks but i wanted to start training before that. I have taught him to sit on command already which he learnt very quickly so i tried teaching him 'Drop'. All he does is jump on the hand with the biscuit and lie down and chew my hand, should i reward him or keep trying to make him drop correctly? Also, i live in Australia, so it can get quite hot in the Summer, he feels the heat quite a bit because he is black, how can I cool him down? Any other training tips would be great!! And i didn't get him from a Pet Shop or Designer Dog Breeder, I rescued him from a shelter. :D Thanks.

You should wait until he's older to teach him drop it. Don't reward him for doing something other than what you told him to do. Get him groomed well in the Summer and keep him inside during the hot times of the day. Remember to not walk him on sidewalk when it's hot out, that'll burn his paw pads.

I have the same mix, and I got him from my shelter. He's all black and he caught on right away with training.

Tips For Puppy Training

What are some important tips for training a new puppy?

I just got a new puppy (Black Lab mix) and I need some important tips when I'm disciplining and training her. Please give full responses. Thanks!

You need to make sure that your lab pup knows that good means good before you do anything. Its so easy, simply good followed by a treat, repeat, repeat, repeat many times until your pup isn't looking at you and you can say good and she comes running to you for a treat. Then you will know she has made the association with the word and this will allow you to reinforce good behaviours easily. So when you see her lie down for example a good actually lets her know that is what you are looking for. Most people think dogs understand the word but you actually have to teach it.
