Training to be a dog groomer, uk.?

I would like to train as a groomer, after searching the web there are courses that reckon you can learn from scratch to run your own business in 4-6 weeks. Could any experienced groomers please say if this is correct. I would have thought that there was far too much to learn in such a short space of time especially with all the different breed specific cuts. I would rather set up on my own but would like to know if I should pay for the course & then look for a job to gain experience. Does anyone know of a course in South West England. Any help would be much appreciated.

Hi, thanks for the replies so far. Have spoken to groomers & googled. All answers seem to be the same, can do the course & off you go. Not C&G level, that takes around 18 months working experience. So that's the way I will go, I don't think I'd get an apprenticeship as by the time that was completed it would be almost time to retire.

There is no way that you can learn to be a groomer in 4-6 weeks. Every breed has a different cut and you will need to learn how to cope with dogs who hate being groomed.
There are large organisations, which will employ you and where you can learn the skills. There is a centre in Sunderland called "My Pet Stop", they have branches in Manchester and Leeds. My geography is hopeless, consequently I haven't a clue how far away this is from you. I think that you should phone them, even if it's too far away from you, they might suggest other places which offer apprenticeships.


New employees start with shampooing, sweeping the floors and doing basis stuff. If they have any free time they assist a qualified groomer. You need to start from the bottom up.
