Should I be certified by CCPDT if I want to be a dog trainer?
I want to be a dog trainer and I was wondering if the CCPDT was something that would help your career or if its just an empty title and a waste of money. I'am already studying under a trainer with over 30 years of experience
I think you should show as many credentials as possible to show potential clients you are a serious trainer. Clients may not know what these things mean but they think it means something. You should also join Association of Pet Dog Trainers, APDT. It can also help to advertise yourself.

I want to do something with dogs and I was thinking about trying to become a dog trainer. I see a lot of the different dog trainer web sites offering expensive course and say you get certified and stuff and I want to know what you need to be certified in to become a dog trainer. I know theres a couple places that call themselves school. Are any of these scams or something bad? Personally, I'd find a dog training facility that I liked, and ask to be an apprentice. If they recommend a course, take that course. Not just what you find on the internet.
I have trained dogs for over 30 years, have many performance and conformation titles, and simply learned by taking a lot of classes and seminars, working my dogs and reading all I could about all types of training -- not just dogs, but marine mammals and exotics as well.
Also, thinking back my college classes in psychology (classical and operent conditioning) were very useful too.
I find that I have NO patience for some of the trainers you see at petsmart/petco and similar places. They have no clue and have never even gotten a CD on a dog, and think they know about training.
Read Jean Donaldson's book "Culture Clash" to get you started. Its an eye opener on dog behavior.
Become an apprentice to a good trainer, you'll get much farther and be a far better trainer!
