Dog Toilet Training

dog toilet training
we've been toilet training our dog since he was young but he still pees on the floor! what should i do?

He's 8 months old now, we got him when he was 3 months

Crate Training Your Dog
Crate training your dog may take some time and effort, but can be useful in a variety of situations. If you have a new dog or puppy, you can use the crate to limit his access to the house until he learns all the house rules, such as what he can and can’t chew and where he can and can’t eliminate. A crate is also a safe way of transporting your dog in the car, as well as a way of taking him places where he may not be welcome to run freely. If you properly train your dog to use the crate, he will think of it as his safe place and will be happy to spend time there when needed. Always provide water for your dog anytime he is in the crate. Spill proof bowls or bowls that attach to the kennel gate work best.

Selecting A Crate
Crates may be plastic (often called “flight kennels”) or collapsible, metal pens. Collapsible fabric kennels are designed for use when the owner is present and may not contain a dog for long periods while unsupervised. Crates come in different sizes and can be purchased at most pet supply stores. Your dog’s crate should be large enough for him to stand up and turn around in.

The Crate Training Process
Crate training can take days or weeks, depending on your dog’s age, temperament and past experiences. It’s important to keep two things in mind while crate training; one, the crate should always be associated with something pleasant; and two, training should take place in a series of small steps – don’t go too fast.

Step 1: Introducing Your Dog To The Crate
• Put the crate in an area of your house where the family spends a lot of time, such as the family room. Put a soft blanket or towel in the crate. Bring your dog over to the crate and talk to him in a happy tone of voice. Make sure the crate door is securely fastened open so it won’t hit your dog and frighten him.

• To encourage your dog to enter the crate, drop small food treats near it, then just inside the door, and finally, all the way inside the crate. If he refuses to go all the way in at first, that’s okay – don’t force him to enter. Continue tossing treats into the crate until your dog will walk calmly all the way into the crate to get the food. If he isn’t interested in treats, try tossing a favorite toy in the crate. This step may take a few minutes or as long as several days.

Step 2: Feeding Your Dog His Meals In The Crate
• After introducing your dog to the crate, begin feeding him his regular meals near the crate. This will create a pleasant association with the crate. If your dog is readily entering the crate when you begin Step 2, put the food dish all the way at the back of the crate. If your dog is still reluctant to enter the crate, put the
dish only as far inside as he will readily go without becoming fearful or anxious. Each time you feed him, place the dish a little further back in the crate.

• Once your dog is standing comfortably in the crate to eat his meal, you can close the door while he’s eating. At first, open the door as soon as he finishes his meal. With each successive feeding, leave the door closed a few minutes longer, until he’s staying in the crate for 10 minutes or so after eating. If he begins to whine to be let out, you may have increased the length of time too quickly. Next time, try leaving him in the crate for a shorter time period. If he does whine or cry in the crate, it’s imperative that you not let him out until he stops. Otherwise, he’ll learn that the way to get out of the crate is to whine and he’ll keep
doing it.
Step 3: Conditioning Your Dog To The Crate For Longer Time Periods
• After your dog is eating his regular meals in the crate with no sign of fear or anxiety, you can confine him there for short time periods while you’re home. Call him over to the crate and give him a treat. Give him a command to enter, such as, “kennel up.” Encourage him by pointing to the inside of the crate with a treat
in your hand. After your dog enters the crate, praise him, give him the treat and close the door. Sit quietly near the crate for five to 10 minutes and then go into another room for a few minutes. Return, sit quietly again for a short time, then let him out of the crate.
• Repeat this process several times a day. With each repetition, gradually increase the length of time you leave him in the crate and the length of time you’re out of his sight. Once your dog will stay quietly in the crate for about 30 minutes with you out of sight the majority of the time, you can begin leaving him crated
when you’re gone for short time periods and/or letting him sleep there at night. This may take several days or several weeks.

Step 4:
Part A – Crating Your Dog When Left Alone
After your dog is spending about 30 minutes in the crate without becoming anxious or afraid, you can begin leaving him crated for short periods when you leave the house. Put him in the crate using your regular command and a treat. You might also want to leave him with a few safe toys in the crate (see our handout, “Dog Toys and How to Use Them”). You’ll want to vary at what point in your “getting ready to leave” routine you put your dog in the crate. Although he shouldn’t be crated for a long time before you leave, you can crate him anywhere from five to 20 minutes prior to leaving.
Don’t make your departures emotional and prolonged, but matter-of-fact. Praise your dog briefly, give him a treat for entering the crate and then leave quietly. When you return home, don’t reward your dog for excited behavior by responding to him in an excited, enthusiastic way. Keep arrivals low key. Continue to crate your dog for short periods from time to time when you’re home so he doesn’t associate crating with being left alone.

Part B – Crating Your Dog At Night
Put your dog in the crate using your regular command and a treat. Initially, it may be a good idea to put the crate in your bedroom or nearby in a hallway, especially if you have a puppy. Puppies often need to go outside to eliminate during the night, and you’ll want to be able to hear your puppy when he whines to
be let outside. Older dogs, too, should initially be kept nearby so that crating doesn’t become associated with social isolation. Once your dog is sleeping comfortably through the night with his crate near you, you can begin to gradually move it to the location you prefer. Puppies that are healthy can have their water taken from them a few hours before bedtime to help decrease the frequency of potty trips they need to make during the night.

Potential Problems
Too Much Time In The Crate
A crate isn’t a magical solution. If not used correctly, a dog can feel trapped and frustrated. For example, if your dog is crated all day while you’re at work and then crated again all night, he’s spending too much time in too small a space. Other arrangements should be made to accommodate his physical and emotional needs. Also, remember that puppies under 6 months of age shouldn’t stay in a crate for more than three or four hours at a time. They can’t control their bladders and bowels for longer periods.

Whining
If your dog whines or cries while in the crate at night, it may be difficult to decide whether he’s whining to be let out of the crate, or whether he needs to be let outside to eliminate. If you followed the training procedures outlined above, your dog hasn’t been rewarded for whining in the past by being released from his crate. Try to ignore the whining. If your dog is just testing you, he’ll probably stop whining soon. Yelling at him or pounding on
the crate will only make things worse. If the whining continues after you’ve ignored him for several minutes, use the phrase he associates with going outside to eliminate. If he responds and becomes excited, take him outside. This should be a trip with a purpose, not play time. If you’re convinced that your dog doesn’t need to eliminate, the best response is to ignore him until he stops whining. Do not give in, otherwise you’ll teach your dog to whine loud and long to get what he wants. If you’ve progressed gradually through the training steps and haven’t done too much too fast, you will be less likely to encounter this problem. If the problem becomes unmanageable, you may need to start the crate training process over again.

Separation Anxiety
Attempting to use the crate as a remedy for separation anxiety will not solve the problem. A crate may prevent your dog from being destructive, but he may injure himself in an attempt to escape from the crate. Separation anxiety problems can only be resolved with counter-conditioning and desensitization pocedures (see our handout, “Separation Anxiety”).

How To Train Your Dog To Walk On A Leash

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]
how to train your dog to walk on a leash
How to train your dog not to pull when on a leash?

I have two labs and neither of them know how to walk on a leash properly. I take them for walks 2 or 3 times a day (separately) and no matter what i try, they will not cooperate. I have tried punishing them for pulling, rewarding them for not pulling (which never happened), trying to keep their attention... none of it seems to be working. Does anyone have an idea that has actually worked? I have the time to devote to training them, I just need the right strategy.

yes, my family has had german sheppards for years
my borther even lives next to e GS training farm for troopers

but anyway

get a leash called the "gentle leader"

it solves their issues. they have a problem with YOU, they think yer a subdominant dog, and wont listen to you

until u show them yer higher in rank, they WILL never be part of yer stupid leash thing.

the gentle leader naturally forces the dogs snout lower than normal... just like a dominant dog would push it when hes telling the sub dog to back down.

its NOT a choke chain, its safe and humane, but its gets that damn animal to obey

Dog Training Clubs

Worst piece of dog training advice you have been given?

When my current Dobermann b*tch was a pup she has the annoying habbit of grabbing trousers legs {usually mine} & more often that not pinching the skin in the process {she was corrected & gave the "game" up}

I mentioned this to the ex police dog trainer who helped run the obedience club I attended & he advised that I let her carry on uncorrected & she would soon get bored of it!

When I had an overly dog aggressive Boxer I was trying to socialize & work on her focus and control, with intentions of eventually being able to bring her into the Obed ring....

Somebody actually suggested REALLY harsh collar corrections, practically "hanging" her, front paws off the ground....with a PRONG COLLAR. Lady who gave me the advice was an Obedience competitor with a lot more experience than me, so I figured she knew what she was doing. She even asked to "borrow" my dog so that she could demonstrate exactly what she was talking about. We were in a public place with other dogs around, so all she had to do was put my dog in a position where she was triggered to lunge and snarl at another dog. Her snarl went immediately to a scream and her feet came up off the ground...but the whole time she was fighting, gagging, trying to growl and bite at whatever she could. It certainly didn't neutralize the situation, it only served to help her associate other dogs with fear and pain :(.

I have nothing against prong collars when used PROPERLY and this was definitely not what I consider proper use of one. I felt so bad that I actually put my dog in someone else's hands & let this happen to her, And I vowed from that point on, I'd NEVER let anyone else handle my dog. Ever.

Fortunately, another person who saw what happened, took me aside privately and put me in touch with someone who was better equipped to help me & my dog. I learned that day that just because someone's got a few dogs with an "alphabet soup" of titles, doesn't mean they know everything about training.

It took about a year of hard work, but I was able to teach her to focus on ME and ignore other dogs, without inflicting prong-collar puncture wounds on her.

guard dogs training
Does anyone know where I can find a guard dog trainer?

I'm going to make this as clear as I can: If all you're going to do is blab about why think it's a bad idea then don't even answer because I don't give a fuck. Now I'm looking for a guard dog training school for my 6 month old Rottie, do you know of any? Again, if you don't know of any then don't answer.

I know of and use several in my area but have not idea where you are. Google it to find a trainer in your area. The United Schutzhund Club of America is primarly for GSDs but they have clubs all over and do train any stable sound breed capable of the work.

Dog Boarding And Training

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]
dog boarding and training
I have a few choices and I need help deciding?

I have a lot of choices that I need to make, and I have no clue what to do. I'm 16, and I don't have a car. I'm home schooled and I babysit, making $60 a week. I love dogs and horses. Here are my choices:

-I can take one horse riding lesson every week. (about 7 minutes away)
-I can do volunteer work at the humane society for 2-3 hours every week. (is 45 minutes away)
-I can volunteer at a dog training/boarding kennel 5 hours a week.(live less than 10 minutes away)

I want to become a dog trainer, but I also want to start horse-back riding again. This is hard for me to choose. The lady at the kennel told me that once she gets to know me more, that I could possibly get a job. The guy at the horse stable said the same. But, I also want to help animals in need. What would you do, and please give a reason?
This is very hard for me to choose. I have my drivers license, and a car that I can use. I would bike to the dog kennel and horse riding lessons during the spring/summer/fall.

Thats a hard choice. Because you will be relying on others for rides, walking, or taking a bike, the decision has to be yours. I know that as soon as I got my car I volunteered at an animal shelter and it was great. You have to do what you are able. You have to choose the thing that is easiest for you to get to. Maybe you could ask the humane society if you could come every other week instead of every week. They need all of the help that they can get.

leash training
How do I leash training my Husky?

I've just got a Siberian Husky puppy and I read you need to start leash training at the age of 8 weeks or so.. and its really hard o.O he always bites the leash.. and just sits whenever he wants.. and he won't continue walking.. I got him before 2-3 weeks.. I really love him, help anyone >:?

and it will be awesome if you can tell me how to teach them to poop and pee outside.. that little puppy is a shitting machine >.<

As far as leash training you can go to youtube and type in how to train a puppy on a leash and the videos will pop up. There are quite a few of them. Now, to train him to do the business outside, take him out every hour and tell him every time "go potty" so he knows what you are talking about. Have some treats with you to so when he does go potty you can give him the treat on the spot and praise him and tell him good boy.Rubbing his nose in his mess will not do any good. Any dog trainer will tell you that. You can use those potty training mats and put it close to the door where you want him to go out. Don't put them all over the house. That will only confuse him. If you can't watch him the whole time, you might consider getting a crate for him and crate train him. It should only be big enough for him to turn around in. Puppys and dogs will not mess where they have to sleep. It's a good way for him to learn how to hold it until he can go outside.

House Training Your Puppy

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]
house training your puppy

How to House Train a Puppy

There's quite a selection of different dog and puppy potty training techniques you can use, but they all focus on the same outcome - which is the goal of preventing accidents in your house. When training a puppy, one technique used in the more effective house training methods is in encouraging your puppy to do his business outside of the house. Sounds obvious I know, but surprisingly few methods actually have the positive focus.

Whichever methods you decide to use, the main requirement from you is to remain patient and focused - house training a puppy or new dog takes time, and cannot be rushed.

People often feel that older dogs cannot be house broken, but his simply isn't true. Any dog at any age can be taught how to use the bathroom outside of the house. It is important that you keep your dog on a set schedule just as you would a baby. If you are trying to train a puppy then you should take the dog outside every couple of hours and definitely the first thing in the morning, after a meal and after playtime. Puppies under the age of three months are more likely to have accidents around the house because at this age the puppy is still unaware of the fact that they have to go the bathroom until they actually go.

Therefore the crate method of house training may be needed for younger dogs. This means that the dog will be confined to the crate during the times that you are unable to watch them closely to ensure that they don't have an accident in the house. Over time, the puppy is taken from the crate and left around the house because it has learned to use the bathroom outside.

However, if you find that once you have taken your dog out of the crate and they are having accidents once again, this means that you need to use the crate method for a longer period of time. The key to the crate method is that the crate should not be used a punishment. You should make the dog aware of that fact and find another of punishing the dog for any inappropriate behavior. The crate is a place to sleep, much like a den and should be treated as such.

If you have adopted an older dog and you discover that this dog has not be properly housetrained you can still use the create method. However, you must keep in mind that this dog may require a larger crate so that they can move around and sleep comfortably. Puppies need only a small space to sleep, whereas older dogs often like to move around. If by some chance your dog does have an accident in the house it is never a good idea to hit the dog on the nose or rub his or her nose in the mess on the floor. This has been found to only confuse or scare the dog. Scaring the dog is not a method that has been found to be effective when attempting to housetrain your dog.

When training your puppy, you should always keep the dog's food the same until you know that you can trust the dog not to do anything in the house. Changing the dog's food suddenly can have a negative effect on the dog's digestive system, sometimes causing frequent bowel movements. If you do this before the dog is fully house broken you are sure to have a few accidents in your house.

Dog Training Housebreaking

dog training housebreaking
Has anyone ever tried Cardinal's Housebreaking Aid to train their dog where to go?

I'm in the process of trying to house train my adopted dog. Generally, he's pretty good but sometimes in the morning, he pees while we're waiting for the elevator (I live in an apt building). I've tried getting up earlier and I'm always careful to clean up his mess with odor remover (so I don't think its a matter of marking) -- so I'm thinking of using this Cardinal Housebreaking Aid to train him to use a wee wee pad. Any suggestions? Thanks much!

I live in an apartment too, with 2 dogs. Because it's not possible to take them out EVERY time they have to go, I have trained them to go on "puppy pads."

I don't use the flimsy, plastic puppy pads you buy especially for dogs, I use FULL-LENGTH CRIB LINERS (not the fitted sheet style with elastic) that you can buy from the baby section at Target (only $8.99).

They're made of thick cotton (top and bottom) with vinyl lining in between. They're completely waterproof so it doesn't go through on your floor. I bought a few of them so I could replace them easily while the soiled ones are soaking in bleach water.

Basically, whenever you notice your dog has to go, walk him over to the pad. If he goes right away, treat him immediately. Just be consistent, treating him every time he goes on or near the pad. After about a week, he shouldn't require treats anymore, it will just be a habit of his.

Cat Behavior Biting

cat behavior biting
Any way to stop a cat from biting everything?

My cat is about 7 months old and bites anything: he has bitten through various wires and extension cords. He bites through ear phones, shoes and even plastic ipod cases. Please tell me a way to stop this behavior. It was tolerable before but now its driving us mad.

Young kittens between the ages of 3 weeks old and 8 months old will be teething off and on, and will have very strong needs to bite. Just like baby children, kittens are born without teeth, start getting their first baby teeth at about 3-4 weeks old, then they will lose their baby teeth and have their adult teeth come in up until the age of about 8 months old. So the trick here is not to keep them from biting; but rather, to provide them appropriate items to bite. We use heavy-duty plastic drinking straws with our kittens, (being careful to cut off any bitten ends and discard the entire straw before it becomes dangerous, as with any toy), and train them from the start that toys and straws are purr-rectly fine to bite, but human body parts are off-limits! If a kitten learns this from the start, there is hardly ever an inappropriate biting behavior as an adult. Some cats start biting out of frustration after they have been declawed. Some cats start biting out of misplaced aggression, which usually can be countered by providing the cat a feline playmate, and/or providing them more cat toys, cat furniture, and making their environment more stimulating for them. Any time the kitten bites you make a loud “yowling” sound. If you’ve ever witnessed a cat get hurt, you will probably know what this sounds like. After you yowl, walk away and ignore the kitten. Never yell at or hit a cat. At all times, it is critical that you be thinking and acting on the firm belief that "toys and straws are for biting; human hands are for giving and receiving love.”

Teach your kitten from an early age that hands are for feeding and stroking and NOT a toy!
Avoid playing with your bare hands
Use a fluffy toy or a feather on a string instead
In case it grabs your hand, draw it away slowly and do NOT punish your cat, it will understand it as an attack and make matters worse.
Anytime your cat scratches or bites you, make a loud yowling sound to show that you have been hurt, (even if you really aren’t hurt). Your cat will understand.
If your cat is a "leg biter" try to spend more time playing with it and redirect its attack to a toy. Leave toys lying around so that he can also amuse itself, particular when you keep your cat indoors. Cats need a wide variety of toys to keep them interested, so don’t expect a couple toy mice to help.

Dogs Training Series Where to Find the Best Food for a Nutritious Dog Diet

If you've owned a dog for awhile, you most likely are aware of the benefits of a healthy and nutritious dog diet. With so many excellent dog foods on the market today, how do you decide which are the best?

It's a difficult question to answer because dog food scientists are more aware that dog diets are equally as important as our own. Dogs need proper vitamins and minerals every day. They need a balanced diet, one that contains meat and vegetables.

We often don't think of it, but dogs are carnivorous, but they also eat berries and vegetables if necessary for survival in the wild. These products provide nutrients that are not readily available from protein-rich diets.

Researchers also know that certain ingredients can produce negative reactions in dogs that are sensitive to them. As dog food manufacturers improve on their products by adding more of the nutritious elements and less of the harmful ones, dog owners can rest a little easier.

Many excellent products are on the market today. They come in a variety of forms, including canned, bagged and as individual treats that provide extra benefit such as teeth cleaning. Chain stores that once focused more on providing moderately adequate economical food are now beginning to offer dog foods that are higher in quality yet still at a low cost.

While economical food is better than it once was, it still doesn't match up to the superiority of premium dog food that has a price to match.

If you would rather not risk your dog's health, consider stores that sell feed for other animals and that regularly deal with customers interested in excellent nutrition for their pets. They would undoubtedly be able to help you decide on a specific brands that suit your dog's particular needs.

Look online and you will find companies that specialize in organic and natural dog diets. Some of the merchants will deliver the food right to your door, making it extremely convenient for you to find and purchase the best option for your dog.

Some people are still reluctant to buy online which is always a risk unless the company is well known and established. Take whatever steps you can to check them out. See how long they have been online and in business. Look for reviews of the company and their products to see what users might be saying.

Barring the internet, do not overlook your veterinarian as a good source of information. He will be able to make a recommendation based on your particular dog's breed, size and any health conditions that might exist. The food you choose can help or hinder your dog's condition, especially if he is in a weakened state.

Many vets sell specific brands and varieties of dog food from their office. The price might be a bit higher, but the value is worth to your dog's health is worth it.

Buying from your vet is handy as you can collect the food during your pet's check-up or when going to get your dog's monthly medication in the case of heartworm or other condition. If the vet recommends a particular type of diet for your dog due to health reasons, he likely will be the best person to talk to about finding the exact food your dog requires.

Of course, what better way to guarantee your dog gets only the freshest food than to grow your own. Since dogs require vegetables as well as meat and grain, you can prepare some recipes yourself from your own garden stock. Choose green beans and carrots which provide are excellent food value.

For quality meat and ideal bones, check with your local butcher who will have fresher food than you will get from processed dog food. Once you have decided on a specific diet for your dog, take advantage of the healthiest and most convenient method available to you.

How can I fix my barking dog problems?

It is so difficult and annoying to deal with the dog who seems don't care no matter what you ask it to do. Instead of enjoying a quiet time with your baby, you keep screaming out of heart trying to shut off this barking machine. If this is your case, you are at the right place to find the answers to all your questions. You don't want to spend a lot of money for private lessons, but still want to train your dog to civilized behavior, right? Keep reading and I'll show you how and where you can find all those answers and fix yor barking dog problems.

When we talk about barking as a behavior dog problems, we mean barking that's nuisance barking, which is disruptive and annoying. Listen carefully to your dog's bark and you'll discover that the barks have different meanings. Many dogs will give an alarm bark when someone enters pack territory. They are far more tuned in to the environment than we are. It's possible that the dog is aware of activity that the humans don't know about and is responding to that. This is normal.

Some dogs, however, bark at nothing: out of sheer boredom or stress at being left alone. The barking can get excessive, to the point of neighbor complaint. This type of behavior dog problem needs the holistic approach of increasing the dog's exercise and obedience training to provide mental stimulation for the dog.

Remember, the punishment rarely works to fix your barking dog problems and can make the situation even worse by increasing the dog's anxiety. Often, teaching the dog to bark on command can go a long way toward preventing barking dog problems. Barking on command puts the owner in control and allows the owner to tell the dog when to turn it off.

With highly territorial dogs, prevention might be the best option to solve the barking dog problems. Block their view of activities that are likely to turn on a bark fest.

Since some barking dog problems are also brought on by boredom, make sure the dog is exercised daily. Dogs that get enough exercise and mental stimulation rarely sit around barking all day.

In some cases, bringing the dog inside the house can solve the barking dog problems. After the dog has been moved indoors, obedience trained, and exercised appropriately, a corrective antibark collar may be a reasonable option if the problem still fails to resolve. Training should always be the first option.

Dog Potty Training Tips

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]
dog potty training tips
Potty and house training tips for new dog , please?

How do I go about training our new family member and correcting their "accidents" and bad behaviors? Do I have to crate train them as well? It seems like everyone is these days but the one dog i previously owned, didnt need one and id like to keep it that way.

With potty training you want to take the pup out side on a leash, even if you have a fenced in yard have lots of treats on hand, once pup is out side he will be wanting to play but don't let him sniff around and when he finally goes potty heavily praise him for it "good boy" real uppity and cheerful then give him a treat and let him off the leash to play. then in about 2 hours take him out again and repet the whole thing except when you go to take him out say let's go potty and take him to the exact same spot he did his business. he will go, repeat the praising and treats and let of leash once again to play, puppies love praise and rewards, their minds do not comprehend fully till they are about 4 months old but if you start early so will they. This has worked on all 5 of my dogs so Good Luck.
Crate Training is good for them but is NOT neccesary, if you want to crate train you can but you don't have too. Puppies that are crate trained tend to be really excited when out. If you crate train do not put puppy in there for bad behavior because this will only make him dislike the crate. Put him in there at night to go to sleep with a little blanket or a flat doggy bed you don't want the cage to be huge or too small, if the cage is too big then puppy will more than likely potty in it, You want the puppy to have enough room to be able to turn around and stretch, but you don't want him too cramped up. Only 3 of my dogs are crate trained and I rarely ever use them. My babies sleep with me (even though I am supposed to be the leader in the pack) I know but I cant help but not to let them do it. But don't let them sleep with you unless you want to make it a permanent habbit, If there is anything else I can help you with feel free to e-mail me. Good Luck

Does someone know of good websites on very simple puppy training?

We have a 9 week old sheltie. He's smart, but we cannot get him into puppy training until April. In the meantime I would like to work with him on very simple commands---like no, come, and fetch. Does anyone know of sites that have ideas on training these simple commands?

Thanks!

Best Dog Training Dvd

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]
best dog training dvd

Reason Why You are Better Off with a Dog Training DVD

There are a couple of reasons why it would be better for pet owners to just buy a dog training DVD rather than to enroll their pets to an expensive training school. The first reason is the most obvious one: money. Obviously, it is a lot cheaper to just purchase a DVD and do the training at home than to pay for training fees. These dog trainers have gone through a lot of training themselves so it is just natural for them to ask for really high fees. While you would still have to buy dog training DVD from dog training experts, there will be a lot of difference between the fees that you would have to pay.

Another reason why you would be better of buying a dog training DVD is the assurance that your pet will only follow you and the other people at home. In training schools, what they use is the universal dog language; hence, as long as other people can copy their methods in the schools, they would be able to control your dog. This is a threat to your safety as this means that other people can use your dog against you.

Your pet should be your best friend and protector and not the other way around. By getting a dog training DVD, you can make sure that you do not pay much money and the training is personalized. Training your dog would require just a few minutes of your time so it would not be such a bother on your part.

Obedience Training Puppies

Obedience Training Puppies - Five Techniques For Obedience Training Puppies

When is the best time to start obedience training puppies?  Puppies are ready to learn from about 10 weeks of age.  You should start with the very basics, and not expect too much from your puppy too soon.

Puppies are babies, just like children, so keep this in mind when you start obedience training puppies.  It shouldn’t be all “business”, you should definitely include plenty of playtime or your puppy will not listen when you try to teach it some commands.

One of the most important thing about obedience training puppies is to make it fun.  Don’t yell at your puppy or be negative.  Positive reinforcement and praise are the best ways to teach a puppy a new behavior.

Here are the basic things you should be doing with your puppy:

1.        Immediately from when you get your puppy home, you should regularly bathe and brush him.  Trim his nails and brush his teeth.  Put a collar on him and attach a leash.  This will get your puppy used to the idea of being handled and also lets him know who is boss.

2.        When you feed your puppy, take his food dish away several times.  This will teach him to not be aggressive when he is eating his food.

3.        Socialization is very important.  Take your puppy out for a walk where you will encounter other dogs.  Allow your puppy to explore those dogs and play with them, if possible.  Make sure your puppy’s vaccinations are up to date.

4.        When your puppy is about 1 month old, you can start to teach him simple things like “come”, “sit”, “wait”, “don’t touch”.

5.        Teach your puppy not to bite.  If your puppy nips or bites you, you should have a toy ready in your other hand to put in their mouth and then praise them.

Obedience training puppies requires a great deal of patience and love.  Never get angry with your puppy or hit your puppy.  Make sure that you spend a great deal of time playing with your puppy and never leave it alone with small children.

As your puppy grows older, it is ready to learn more complicated commands.  Around the five month mark, you can teach your puppy manners with commands such as “off”, “stand”, “down” and “stand”.  Never use punishment as a training method.  Any good training method uses rewards to motivate your dog to behave.

Lucy's Dog house wonderful dog collars

<!-- @page { margin: 2cm } P { margin-bottom: 0.21cm } -->

There are numerous types of dog collars in the market, ranging from the stylish to the normal dog collar types. There are also various types of material that are used for the manufacture of the dog collar. Further, we have different colors and designs to fit any given occasion or season.

The most common type of dog collar is the one made from nylon fabric. Nylon is mostly used for dog collars because it is very durable and water or weather resistant. It is also very easy to color nylon fabric and so your dog collar can come in any color conceivable. With nylon fibre it is easier to come up with dog collars of any size or which are adjustable and which are very useful as a dog grows up. Other types of material available include leather and hemp and more recently specially formulated synthetic materials that are super strong and completely waterproof. Dog collars come with wonderful built in accessories so lighted dog collars and cooling dog collars are now more available.

Some dog collar manufacturers offer personalization services where you can have a dog collar manufactured to your specifics. This type of customization is very useful especially for different seasons. You can have a dog collar for the Christmas holidays, Valentine's Day and so forth. A customized Valentine Day dog collar can have hearts on it while the Christmas dog collar can have jingle bells and snowflake designs on it. There are even dog collars that are designed so that you can customize them yourself and change out letters, buttons, and designs giving you a different dog collar every day.

The dog collars market is big business such that renowned designers have joined in the making of what were once just really simple collars. It therefore not a wonder to find a dog collar embellished in expensive jewels and which can cost a fortune.

A good point to consider when you want to purchase a dog collar is the age of the dog. It is not very advisable to buy an expensive dog collar for a young and aggressive dog; in most cases, the dog or its friends will most definitely tear apart the dog collar into shreds in a few days. Old mature dogs are less aggressive and thus they can accommodate any customized dog collars without involving any major risks.

The main function of dog collars is to help you control and train your dog more easily. The dog collar should allow you to have a simple time when, for example, walking with your dog. We have different categories of dog collars which may include: head, halter-type, chain slip, pronged and dog harness collars. Whatever the type of dog collar you choose for your dog, you just have to ensure that it is first of all functional and then all other aspects will follow. We have added two new lines of dog collars, Dublin Dog collars and the Flying Dog collars. Both brands are simply awesome with great designs combined with strength and durability.

Lucy's Dog house donates a portion of their sales every month to different charities and dog rescues.

Potty Training Older Dogs

Dog Potty Training Older Dogs

Dog Potty Training older dogs is more likely difficult than training a 6 month old puppy. I have a first hand experience on this, trust me. I have no idea before that I could train a dog to pee or poop to a location or spot where I would want him to. I got myself a regular male breed shih tzu two years ago and I named him Bruno. Bruno was a very cute little pup when I bought him and without any hesitation brought him home and took good care of him like he's my own child. I used to clean Bruno's mess for couple of months because that's the way i pamper him, just like a baby. Until I can no longer stand the stench of his dirt. My house was like my dog's bathroom.

Until I decided to do a dog potty training on him. I read some articles about this on the net until I stumbled on a very effective method and which was also adviced by my friends. It's easy and very basic. Bruno has been unloading in almost all areas in my house. Usually dogs pee or poop wherever they smell a spot that has their own dirt on it. I did cleaned those spots and bought something from a petstore that woudl neutralize the smell so that Bruno won't unload to that area again. Now, everytime a dog eats or drink you should take him outside after 15-20 minutes because this is when they normally unload. So, I patienly took Bruno 15-20 minutes right after he's done with his meal. A good time to take him outside also is when he wakes up on his nap. I had Bruno's last meal at 7:00pm so that he won't urinate or poop during sleeping hours. For a month I did these basic steps and right now Bruno has been potty trained. Dog Training: Tame your Pets at Ease

If you have a new puppy or dog, then you need to provide some sort of basic training for your pet. You can train your dog yourself or can get it trained through an obedience instructor. As dogs are like kids, they need proper training to mould them into obedient pets. With the required training, your dog can learn how to behave. You can be a happy owner if you have a trained dog. Dog training involves learning to communicate with a dog properly. You can train young pups within 2 to 3 weeks while for an older dog it can take about 7 to 8 weeks for training. Basic training can be started for pups when they are about 8 -12 weeks old for teaching commands and tricks. From about 3 to 6 months, formal classes can begin.

With understanding and patience, the trainer can impart efficient training to resolve the behavioral problems of dogs. For adequate training of your dog, you do not require any strong language or physical discipline. There are a number of methods for making training enjoyable for both your dog and yourself. Certain specific trainings are also available for dogs for doing tasks such as rescue dogs, guiding for the blind, hunting dogs etc.

When providing training for your dog, ensure that the place is open and quiet without any distractions. You can make the training experience an enjoyable one for both of you for ensuring that your dog stays happy, gains confidence and behaves well. The way and tone of speech is important in dog training. You need to use a friendly and happy tone for commands like 'come' and ‘heel’. Your voice can be firm and low for commands such as ' stay' and ‘Sit down'. You need to appreciate your puppy or dog by offering some toy or food when it obeys the command. After the training class, you can take a little time to play with your pup or dog and this can develop a bond between both of you during the training. You should have good endurance to train and always should avoid harsh punishment.

Remember that food is important in dog training, as most dogs will love to eat. Some foods are tasty for dogs and it is also convenient for the trainer as bits of food can be kept in bag or pockets. Also note that giving food brings positive associations while training. You need to just know which food your dog likes. Never use food for behavior control; instead food should support a behavior. Never train the dog on a full stomach.

Keep the leash a bit loose when you walk with your dog because a tight leash could teach the dog to pull. Do not punish the dog after calling to you. Only one command should be given at any one time. Dogs cannot differentiate the good and bad deeds, as they know specific behavior to certain situations; therefore name a behavior to reinforce some control. Behavior will increase with reward.

You can also choose online dog training if a dog trainer or dog training school is not accessible. You can enroll for some online dog training classes and know all the secrets and techniques used by professional dog trainers for activity training, behavior training and obedience training.

Aggressive Dog Training Tips

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]
aggressive dog training tips

Things To Know About Aggressive Dog Training

An aggressive dog can illustrate signs like snarling, barking, growling, baring teeth, and in the worst cases, biting. This nature of dog needs dog training as soon as possible to help control its behavior and make it a happier dog.

A dog's aggression is caused by different reasons. These include fear, jealousy, bad treatment by previous owners, being territorial, or other unknown reasons. A number of dog breeds are more susceptible to being aggressive than others such as Rottweilers or Chow Chows.

Dogs are defensive and when they perceive a threat to their or their master's territory, they would like to defend it. Dogs are pack animals so they also want their place in their pack known.

Dogs that were previously abused will be scared of strangers and may bark, snarl or bite strangers that get too close. This does not mean they are bad dogs, it is just that they are scared and want to defend themselves.

Socializing might be of importance to puppies and if puppies are not socialized, they are more likely to be aggressive. A dog that had a previous owner that yelled and hit him for negative behavior can be another cause of dog aggression.

Aggressive dog training will teach dogs what behavior is acceptable and what behavior is not. With time and effort you can train your dog to stop the aggressive behavior.

It is imperative to start training an aggressive dog right away because people are scared of them and forobvious safety reasons. Not a soul wishes their dog to bite someone.

When a dog displays aggressive behavior, give the dog a loud and firm "No!" and put the dog in time out. Dogs love attention of their owners and this time out will cut it off from its owner after the bad behavior.

Release the dog after the designated time and the next time the dog becomes aggressive, do the same thing and the dog will understand that this negative behavior makes his master upset.

Another tip in aggressive dog training is to not chain up your dog for long periodof time as this may also make a dog have aggressive behavior and make sure your dog obtains enough exercise and attention.

Trained Protection Dogs

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]
trained protection dogs
Anyone know if Guide Dogs for the blind are also Protection trained?

So I was thinking as I was driving to work today... I saw a blind woman and her German Shepherd guide dog. I wondered in this day in age, it isn't out of the question for some awful person to mug a blind person..... my question is, All the money and training and time that goes into Guide Dogs... Do they get trained in protection/bite work as well?

Just curious... thanks Dog Section.

Guide dogs are NOT trained for protection and bite work.

The point of a Guide Dog is that it is also suppossed to be socialized and tolerant of the general public. What if their blind master needed physical/medical assistance? That would not be good for the dog to bite and attack anyone who is trying to help his master.

Guide dogs are not suppossed to display ANY aggressive behavoirs.

Shepherds are naturally proctive tho.. Im sure if the dog felt his master was in danger, he would protect him/her.. but the dog is not trained to do that.

Pet Cat Training

Cat Training: Scratching

Cats have a odd way of saying that they like you, they leave marks in a lot of places of your home. You will usually know if the home you're in has a cat for a pet even without seeing the cat. You will be able to see scratch marks in more or less each corners of the house. Scratching is very common behavior for kitties and there are loads of reasons as to why they do this. A number of cats scratch home furniture and flooring in order to release pent up energy inside of them, they scratch so they become fatigued instead of restless. One more reason they scratch is because they want to eliminate some parts of their claws or they want to sharpen their claws. Cats also mark their territory with scratching surfaces or leaving their odor on it. Cats additionally scratch surfaces as they want to flex their bodies and move their muscles.

Most owners take time to train their cat to alter this sort of damaging behavior. Kitties can be disciplined to follow commands so they can also be trained to change their behavior towards objects and people. When cat training scratching should be one of the areas you must focus on. Because this is a natural trait for them, you can not actually prevent them from scratching but you can change where they do it. You can provide your cat with items that it can scratch freely. You have to observe what types of objects the cat likes scratching, look at where it is located and try to figure out what its texture is. You will have to make the cats preferred scratching thing seem unappealing by covering it or by spraying it with an scent that cats do not enjoy. Look for a scratching post that will go with the consistency of the thing your cat likes scratching and place it close to the area where this much loved object is located. Make certain that the new scratching post has the exact same feel as the favorite object and keep in mind to make it steady. Once the cat uses the scratching post give it goodies and pet it warmheartedly. If that cat actually comes to like the scratching post, you can little by little move it to a better location. These movements must not be big jumps, consider that you need to take it slow with kitties. The favorite scratching object of the cat has to remain unattractive until you are in no doubt that the cat will not go back to using it and has really taken to the scratching post.

You will frequently improve with shifting this behavior slowly but surely. Just stick to it and you will see results in no time.

Dog Training Pads

dog training pads
How do i train my dog to pee and poop on her training pads?

I have a two month old pomeranian, she's not an outside dog so i can't be relying on someone to take her out to use the restroom. We bought her some training pads so she can go potty inside but she doesn't use them. She just pees and/or poops in any random area of the living room or my room.I tried moving the pads to where she mostly uses the restroom but instead she just goes somewhere else.I also tried picking up her poop and placing it on the pad and letting her see it there, but it has no effect on her.She has sorta begun to use the pads, but only when she has to pee sometimes.I honestly don't know what to do,i don't want poop or pee stains all over my carpet.
Any GOOD suggestions?

You need training to be faster to react hen the pup wants to go.
It really isn't difficult to teach them to go outside, you just need to realise when she wants to go, how long after her feed and a young pup will normally pee immediately after it wakes up.

Has anyone taken their puppy/dog to McCann Professional Dog Trainers in Flamborough, ON? Do you Recommend it?

I don't live in Ontario, so I can't tell you about them, but I can give you one helpful suggestion.

Ask the staff at McCann for references. It's certainly within your right to ask them for names of some of their customers who have given permission to give their name/phone number out as a reference, so potential customers can ask questions of existing or past customers.

Another thing to do is ask to be allowed to sit in on a class to see how they do their training.

I don't consider either of these requests to be unreasonable -!-

Why You Should Consider Hiring a Professional Dog Trainer

The majority of us don't have the expertise, experience or time to properly train our dogs and this is where enlisting the services of a professional dog trainer can come in handy. Professional dog trainers have the experience necessary for understanding and dealing with dogs. They have had a wider exposure to canines than most dog owners and can usually help owners with behavioral problems train their pets to be good canine citizens.

Dog trainers are well versed in various dog training methods and techniques that can help cure problematic behaviors in your pet. Attempting to train your dog yourself may have an adverse result if you don't understand the root of the problem and how to handle it; this is where a dog trainer's experience comes into play.

If you lack patience and consistency and attempt to train your dog, you will only serve in confusing him. Dogs require infinite patience and persistence to understand what is expected of them and you should never lose your temper while training a dog. Professionals understand this and are able to deal with dogs in a gentle and calm manner. If you hire a professional dog trainer and find they are using harsh training methods, you should remove your dog from their care immediately as dogs respond to gentle treatment.

Hiring a trainer is a good idea if your dog has behavioral issues such as aggression. You are legally liable for your dog's actions and an aggressive pet can result in legal action being taken against you if he harms others. Aggression is a difficult behavioral problem to treat and you may not have the experience needed to cure aggression in your dog. As there are many different root causes behind canine aggression professional dog trainers are generally better equipped in dealing with these types of pets.

Some dog breeds are more problematic to train then others. Labradors and Retrievers are well known for their friendly and mellow personalities but canines such as terriers and guard dogs may require more specialized training. Some professional dog trainers specialize in training certain breeds of dogs and this type of trainer can really help you jumpstart your pet's training.

There are many different levels of dog training ranging from basic commands to higher level obedience training which you can choose from. You can choose to leave your dog with at a trainer's facility for a period of time or enroll in obedience classes and learn to work with your pet. Whichever you choose, do your homework properly, ask about the trainer's credentials and try to meet with previous customers to see if they were satisfied with the trainer's methods.

Can I litter train my pug?

So I just moved into my own place and I'll be getting a pug puppy in about a month, so it will be the first time I (instead of my dad) will be house training my dog. Back home, we could let the dogs outside and let them run around in the yard but I'm in an apt now in dt Toronto so it's a bit different. I'm wondering if I can litter train my pug instead of running down 15 stories to take him outside several times a day. If so, can you guys give me any tips? How do I let him know that he' supposed to go in there.. I know I should reward him after with positive reinforcement, but how do I actually get him in there in the first place? (I have visions of myself running with him in my arms, trying to get the the litter box and pee flying everywhere lol!)
Also how long should the training take? Is it extremely difficult? Or should i just stick to making the trip downstairs all the time.
I would really appreciate any help or advice you guys can offer! Thanks a lot!! :)

If you do not have the energy or desire to get you and your dog outside to go to the bathroom then a dog is not for you.

If you want something that uses a litterbox, get a cat.

Either commit to being a good dog owner and making the trip downstairs all the time, or forget the dog.
