Can I give puppy treats to a dog under 4 months old?
I am getting a puppy in 2 weeks time and have started collecting bits and bobs, including treats, which are clearly marked for puppies and as an aid to training, also stating that they have been designed with small dogs in mind. However, upon reading the back of the packets when I've got home, they say not to be given to dogs under 4 months! Does anyone know why this is, as I do not plan on waiting till he is 4 months before toilet training etc? He will be 9 weeks when I get him. The brands I have so far are "Pedigree" Puppy Markies and Pets at Home training treats.
There absolutely no reason not to give them to a puppy of 8 weeks or more. If they are eating solid food they are ok with treats. Depending on the type you might even cut them into small piece so they go farther without adding a lot of calories to his diet. As soon as you can stop the treats as you do not want your puppy doing his tricks because you are treating him. He should do them because you love him and he loves you. My puppy at 8 weeks could sit, down, shake, high five and target and he would preform for a friend and then come to be to be paid.
