Head Collars for training, your thoughts?
Im having a bit of trouble in Dog Obedience with my 6 months old Staffy X always trying to run off and sniff the closest dogs butt or wanting to play. We've been going for about 6 weeks now!
Someone mentioned a Gentle lead head collar, but I thought they were a little cruel. Seeing as if you pull to hard you are pulling the dogs snout and head! The person did mention is really deters your dog from doing it after that first pull to straighten them up.
Your thoughts, experience and suggestions would be appreciated :o)
This is the product I was thinking about getting for him... http://www.petsplus.com.au/pet-shop.asp?id=34
Harness that goes around his chest only makes him want to pull harder!
They aren't cruel, no. They work on the principle that the dog pulls opposite to pressure. When the head collar is properly fitted and the dog pulls, he gets pressure at the base of his skull, and he pulls his head up and back. Tough to go forward that way! If the snout loop begins to tighten, he pulls his head up.
And you are right that harnesses increase, rather than decrease, pulling.
I don't think this collar could possibly used on a training class however, where you are learning how to do leash corrections. You'd do better to learn how to use the leash and collar you have for class, and to teach your dog to settle. Also, if class is the only socialization he's getting with other dogs, he's going to be harder to control in class.
