Are there any great websites or methods for housebreaking a puppy?
I've been trying to get my puppy used to a schedule, and he's been going outside more frequently, but I really need to figure out how to get him to stop eliminating inside.
Oh geez, there are 1000 websites for this.
But here are the general guidelines, from years of experience:
Feed the dog on a schedule. He will need to eliminate somwhere between 10 and 40 minutes after eating based on age.
The crate is your friend. Most dogs will not soil their quarters if the can possibly avoid doing so, and you can use this to your advantage.
Puppies need to go out at the following times, always: Upon waking (yes, naps count here); within 10-40 minutes of eating; after high activity like running or play; any time they sniff, circle or suddenly just look up from what they are doing; when they get really excited (like guests come to your house).
Corrections: This is where most people just F it up completely. How so?
Dogs only understand immediate reactions. If you didn't catch him in the act of messing in the house, well, shame on you. Forget it. Clean it up, think about how you missed any cue from the dog that he needed to go, and move on. If you correct him AFTER he has made the mistake, he has no idea why you are attacking him. None at all. He just thinks you are a scary and unpredictable MF and all training will be more difficult.
In case it is not obvious, there is NO REASON TO SHOVE THE DOG'S NOSE IN IT!! His sense of smell is, oh, 500 times better than yours. He knows it is there. You are just being a bully, and he will remember that you are a bully!
If you catch him in the act, give a firm, low toned NO, and immediately run him outside. Praise wildly for any attempts at elimination outdoors.
No this is not theory to me--I housetrained my dog in 3 days this way. And no she is not the doggy Einstein. ;)
Housetrained many others as well. It's not rocket science, I promise. It's planning and consistency, always. All training is planning and consistency.
