How should one go about training and disciplining a very lively and tireless young Labrador-cross Dog?
I use Cesar Milans method:
Exercise -- Makes the dog calm
Discipline -- Make the dog submissive
Affection -- Praise for the above behavior
Its so simple but it actually works. Walk the dog first, then when you get home work on discipline. A dog that has high energy and isnt tired out is not going to be open minded and learn what your trying to teach it. It possible but this method is more efficient.
Walking your dog is the single most important part of training, it teaches your dog that your the leader, it allows your dog to be exposed to a number of different scenarios, it serves as physical exercise and mental stimulation. It also simulates the migration of the "pack"
I also use treats but more to enforce the training and obedience the dog already knows, I dont use treats for discipline, only for training (come, sit, stay, down, etc)
I also use the NILF (nothing in life is free) method, it helps keep the training sharp. An example would be making the dog sit and stay before I let him in from outside.
