Deterring bad behavior?
I have a kitten appx 3 months old and I am using a squirt bottle of water to give him a quick spray when he does things like grab onto my curtains, trying to get into garbage can, etc. Does anybody know if this will really work in the long run or am I just wasting my time? Any other suggestions are welcome.
The spray bottle will work to some extent, but time will help, too. Your kitten is going through a phase that will last another month or two. Right now he's obsessed with climbing and jumping and stalking and pouncing and biting and scratching. It's instinct preparing him to start finding and killing prey -- instinct hasn't caught up with the fact that cats are no longer living in the wild.
In a few weeks he'll get over this phase and be much more socially acceptable. In the meantime, diverting his attention is better than punishing him with a squirt bottle, because he literally can't help himself. Give him lots of toys to stalk and attack, such as feathers on a stick, pull-toys on a string, rattle mice and jingle balls, toys inside a paper sack that he can discover and "kill." A toy called a Cat Dancer is cheap and cats go bonkers for it. Don't let him attack your hands...if he does, just say "No!" loudly, put him down, and walk away.
Don't worry...he'll be a sweet kitten again.
