Aviation Sights of New Jersey

When Pierre Blanchard had ascended from Philadelphia in a hot air balloon on January 9, 1793 and made the 15-mile journey across the Delaware River to Depford, New Jersey, he had made the Western hemisphere’s first aerial flight, sparking a long line of aviation accomplishments in the Garden state.

Charles Durant, of Jersey City, for example, had subsequently become the first American balloonist to fly in 1830 and Dr. Solomon Andrews, constructing the first dirigible three years later, rose above Perth Amboy and flew to Long Island, then an unheard-of achievement by air.

The Boland brothers, of Rahway, built the first fixed-wing aircraft in 1909 and became the first to fly in South America.  Three years later, in 1912, Oliver Simmons carried the first official sack of mail across Raritan Bay, from South Amboy to Perth Amboy, in a Wright Flyer.  The first five World War I flying aces had hailed from New Jersey, earning the title in 1918.  The world’s first dirigible, the USS Shenandoah, had been built in Lakehurst in 1921.  The Barling Bomber, constructed at Teterboro Airport in 1922 by the Wittlemann brothers, had then been the largest aircraft ever designed.

Air-cooled Whirlwind engines, built in Princeton, had powered many early aircraft of the 1920s.  Metropolitan New York’s airmail hub, established in 1925, had been located at Hadley Field in South Planfield.  Richard Byrd and Floyd Bennett had been the first to navigate a Teterboro-constructed Fokker Trimotor, powered by Whirlwind engines, over the North Pole in 1926.  However, the feat had been one of many made possible by the engine: in 1927, Charles Lindbergh had flown across the Atlantic in the Spirit of St. Louis; Clarence Chamberlin had flown to Germany two weeks later; and Richard Byrd and a crew of three had flown to France, all in aircraft powered by the Whirlwind.

Newark Metropolitan Airport, the world’s busiest airfield, had opened in 1928 and became the location of America’s first air traffic controller, William “Whitney” Conrad.

The 1930s continued to see New Jersey aviation achievements.  Fokker, for example, had designed the world’s largest passenger aircraft, the F.32, at Teterboro Airport in 1930, while Amelia Earhart had prepared for her solo transatlantic flight here, and the first aviation high school course had been established in Teaneck.  Glen Rock’s Chester Decker became the National Soaring Champion in both 1936 and 1939.  Naval Air Station Lakehurst had been the mooring point for the Graf Zeppelin Hindenburg.

Between 1942 and 1945, General Motor’s Eastern Aircraft Division built 13,500 Grumman fighter aircraft at its Tilden and Trenton plants for the war effort, while the Curtiss-Wright Corporation produced 281,164 engines and 146,468 electric propellers in six northern New Jersey locations.  Major Thomas McGuire, of Ridgewood, New Jersey, became the country’s second leading flying ACE, having shot down 38 enemy aircraft, while Frderick Castle of Mountain Lakes and First Lieutenant Kenneth Walsh of Jersey City, along with McGuire, had received Congressional Medals of Honor for their feats.

The first rocket engine, developed by Reaction Motors of Danville in 1947, had powered the Bell X-1, the first design to break the sound barrier, while their subsequent rocket engine had powered the North American X-15, the first aircraft to fly in space.

The world’s first hovercraft had been designed by Charles Fletcher of Sussex in 1953.

Beyond the atmosphere, Walter M. Schirra of Oradell became the only astronaut to fly in all three spacecraft in 1968--Mercury, Gemini, and Apollo--while Montclair’s Edwin “Buzz” Aldrin became the first astronaut to land a vehicle on the moon one year later.

New Jersey’s rich civil and military aviation heritage can be explored at several strategically located airports and museums.

The Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum of New Jersey, for instance, founded in 1972 and located on the east side of Teterboro Airport, is dedicated to the preservation of the Garden State’s distinguished, two-century aviation and space heritage.  The first such state facility created for this purpose, it enshrines the men and women whose aeronautical achievements had brought world-wide recognition to New Jersey.

Aside from the Hall of Fame itself, its small indoor display area features several significant engines, inclusive of a two-cylinder, 28-hp, 1400-rpm, horizontally-opposed Model A Lawrence from 1916, which had been the forerunner of the Wright Whirlwind; a J44 turbojet engine model from the Teterboro School of Aeronautics; an XLR99 liquid rocket engine, which had first powered the X15 in 1960; a Curtiss Wright XLR-25-CW-1 motor assembly; a Wright Cyclone R-1820; a Wright Tornado R-2160, which had developed 2,350 bph at 4,150 revolutions-per-minute; and an air-cooled Wright Aeronautical J-5 Whirlwind.

Several rotary wing aircraft are also represented, such as a Super Scorpion helicopter, which had won the 1977 Experimental Aircraft Association Rotorcraft Ground Championship, an H-13 (Bell 47), and an Apache.

A Curtiss-Wright Dehmel Flight Simulator had once been used by Eastern Airlines.

A few significant exhibits are maintained outside.  A M*A*S*H unit, for example, features a hospital tent, an operating room, a mess tent, an ambulance, a truck, and a Bell helicopter, and serves as a living memorial to Korean War veterans.  Two rare, commercial aircraft, also located outside, include a Martin 202A registered N93204, which had been manufactured on July 8, 1950, and the nose section of a Convair 880 registered N803TW.  The quad-engined airliner, the third such Convair 880 built, had been delivered to Trans World Airlines in 1961.

Teterboro Airport, the museum’s location, is equally significant.  Owned and operated by the Port Authority of New York and New Jesey, the facility, covering 827 acres, had had its origin in 1917 when Walter C. Teter had acquired the property for it.  The oldest operating airport in the northern New Jersey and New York metropolitan area, it had once been the site of North American Aviation aircraft manufacturing during World War I and subsequently served as the base for Anthony Fokker aircraft.  It had fielded its first, current-site flight in 1919.

After having been operated by the Army and the Air Force during World War II, it had been purchased by the present Port Authority of New York and New Jersey on April 1, 1949.  Serving as a general aviation reliever airport under Federal Aviation Regulation 139, the airport, with some 200,000 annual aircraft movements, features two runways—6,015-foot Runway 6-24 and 7,000-foot Runway 1-19; 4.2 miles of taxiways; an FAA control tower; and 19 hangars with a collective 412,000 square feet of area.  It is a founding member of the Aviation Hall of Fame and Museum of New Jersey.

The Air Victory Museum, located in Lumberton at the South Jersey Regional Airport, is another significant aviation facility and focuses on military aircraft and their powerplants.  “An educational organization dedicated to inspiring today’s youth through the technology and achievements in aviation,” according to its mission statement, the museum, which is partially certified and approved by the US Air Force and fully approved by the US Navy and the National Museum of Naval Aviation, seeks to “educate, celebrate aviation advances, and honor those who made them.”

Its aircraft collection encompasses a McDonnell-Douglas A-4D Skyhawk Attack and Ground Support aircraft in Blue Angels livery, an F-4A Phantom, a Lockheed F-104G Starfighter, a North American F-86-D/L Sabre Jet, a Lockheed P-80A Shooting Star, a Ling Temco Vought A-7 Corsair, and a Grumman F-14 Tomcat.  The engine exhibits are equally significant and include a German World War II Rocket Assist take off engine; a Junkers Jumo 004 eight-stage axial turbojet, which had powered the Messerschmitt Me-262; a Curtiss-Wright J-65; a 2,000-hp Pratt and Whitney two-row, 18-cylinder, air-cooled R-2800 radial; a Pratt and Whitney TF-30, its first afterburner-equipped powerplant; and a General Electric J-79.  Centerpiece of the engine exhibits, however, is a working Pratt and Whitney R-4360.  The largest piston ever designed, it features four rows, seven banks, and 28 cylinders, and had been the only powerplant able to develop its 3,670-pound weight in equivalent horsepower.  It had been used by several bombers, including the goliath, ten-engined B-36 Peacemaker.

The Wright Brothers’ contributions are represented by a full-size reproduction of the Wright Flyer, a 1903 Flyer 1 engine replica clearly showing the technology transfer from the bicycle with its chains and sprockets, a Kitty Hawk representation with the Wright Flyer having just disengaged itself from its acceleration track over the sand, and an actual wind tunnel built under their supervision.

Space is represented by an Orbital Space Plane Cabin Mock-Up docking simulator, an ITOS-D Improved Television Infrared Observation Satellite System built by RCA in Hightstown, and the Orbit ‘81 Ant Colony Experiment prepared by Camden High School students and launched on the Space Shuttle.

Research can be done at the Harold Watson Raymond Sleeper Stephen Synder Memorial Library.

The South Jersey Regional Airport, location of the Air Victory Museum, is a nontowered field with a single, 3,911-foot asphalt runway (08-26) and some 113 based aircraft owned by the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

Southern New Jersey is rich in historic Army and Navy air bases.

The Millville Army Air Field Museum, the first of these, is located at Millville Municipal Airport and had been used for Curtiss P-40 Warhawk and Republic P-47 Thunderbolt pilot training during World War II.

Driving into the airport, currently a general aviation facility, is like entering a World War II time portal: several cinder block buildings and barracks, characteristic of the war, stand eerily silent and vacated, as if the area had once provided the stage for some vast performance, but its players had long since departed.  The runways still routinely field take offs and landings, but mostly of single-engined Cessnas and Pipers.  Yet, the location had been an integral part of World War II and therefore remains historically significant.

It had been one of 900 defense airports ordered by the US government to be strategically located round the country in order to be immediately convertible from civilian to military application and to train counterforces in the event of war.  Unlike the others, however, Millville Army Air Field had been the first one and therefore had been dedicated as “America’s first defense airport” by local, state, and federal officials when it had opened on August 2, 1941 amid a 10,000-strong ceremony.

The current, 923-acre Millville Municipal Airport, New Jersey’s second-largest general aviation field, sports an instrument landing system (ILS) and an FAA Flight Service Station (FSS), the City of Millville leasing its administration to the Delaware River and Bay Authority.

Today, the airport echoes of its World War II role.  Of the 100 buildings occupying the site during the four years between 1941 and 1945, 20 remain and constitute the world’s largest collection of original, war-era structures, and the preservation, of the core acreage, two hangars, and 18 buildings, has been ensured by their inclusion on the New Jersey and National Registry of Historic Places.

The Henry H. Wyble Historic Research Library and Education Center, one of them, is located in one of the base’s original warehouses and sports an extensive, war-related book collection, videos, historic documents, and aircraft models, and serves as a large-screen theater.  The facility, which opened in 2007, features two eight-by-ten foot, “faux,” partially-opened door murals painted by local artists on its façade.

The Link Trainer Building, hailing from 1942 and requiring two years of restoration, houses one of only five still-operational link trainers.  Designed by Edwin Albert Link at his family’s organ-building business in Binghamton, New York, to provide instrument training to World War II pilots during poor visibility and night conditions, the device, borrowing the organ bellows to simulate climbs, descents, and banks, had accounted for 6,271 sales to the Army and 1,045 to the Navy and is presently available for visitor usage for a small fee.

A vintage aircraft collection, privately owned by Thomas Duffy and stored in one of the two historic hangars, includes the P-47 Thunderbolt “No Guts, No Glory,” one of only ten still-airworthy aircraft and the very type for which the air base had been created.

The original Pilot Ready Day Room, constructed in 1943, now houses the Ops-Air Crew Lounge of Big Sky Aviation.

Nucleus of the historic field, however, is the Millville Army Air Field Museum housed in the original Army Air Force World War II Gunnery School Administration Building used between 1943 and 1945 and restored in 1988.  The museum, founded by Michael T. Stowe to preserve US military aviation history, mostly displays artifacts, equipment, photographs, and engines contributed by air base veterans.

A Pratt and Whitney Double Wasp twin-row radial engine, which had powered the P-47 based here along with several other Army and Navy designs, emphases the sheer power of this mighty engine and is a highlight of the displays.  A ceiling light had measured cloud height, while a directional gyro had served as a pilot navigational training aid.

The metal, interlocking Mardson Mat, designed by the British, had facilitated take off and landing operations at ill-equipped locations.  According to George Canning, a current Millville Army Air Field Museum affiliate who had enlisted in the Army Air Corps in December of 1941 and had served in the South Pacific, “it’s the best invention of the whole war.  Put it together and you have an instant runway!”

The Philadelphia Seaplane Base Museum, founded in 1915 by the Robert Mills family and relocated to the current site in 2000, displays aeromarine wings, struts, and pontoons.

A Nordon bombsight, the mahogany nose of a Curtiss Flying Boat, an aircraft model collection in memory of Robert Wilinski, photographs, a uniform collection, and a typical Army barracks set up complete the internal displays, while two aircraft are featured outside.  The first, an A-4F Skyhawk, had been assigned to Attack Squadron 192 aboard the aircraft carrier USS Orskary in 1968 during its Vietnam War combat tour, while the second is a Short Brothers SD3-30 named “Kwajalein Atoll.”

Aside from the exhibits, the museum fields World War II pilot reunions, films, school educational programs, aircraft fly-ins and air shows, and veterans’ events.

Millville Army Air Field, time portal to World War II and once a significant gunnery pilot training facility on the east coast with a fleet of P-47 Thunderbolts, is a living history experience which transcends the past and tells its story to the visitor in the present.

The second historic base in Southern New Jersey, Naval Air Station Wildwood, is located at Cape May Airport.  Constructed in 1942, it had facilitated dive-bombing training with a fleet of Douglas SBD Dauntless, Curitss SB2C Helldiver, Grumman TBM Avenger, and Vought F4U Corsair aircraft, at which time its pilots, arranged in air groups, had transferred to their respective aircraft carriers in the Pacific.

When victory had closed the doors on World War II’s theaters in 1945, the Navy had discontinued its training programs at Naval Air Station Wildwood and by December of the following year, it had been deactivated, its 109 buildings having been declared surplus.  Of these, 79 had been offered by the War Assets Administration, which had intermittently acquired the property, for off-site use, while several larger structures had been given to Cape May County, which had resumed operation of the station.  Hanger Number One, which had been designed by architect Albert Kahn and whose construction had commenced as far back as October of 1942, had been one of them.

Formed by bolted wood Pratt trusses subdivided into ten-foot panels at the roof level, the cavernous, 2,558,000-cubic-foot structure had been 290 feet long, 219 feet wide, and 51 feet high, and had been completed with cross-braced vertical supports at its north and south elevations and a center support, which had once provided the division between its two internal bays.  Its east and west elevations had been created by 12 full-height telescoping doors.  Aside from once housing the air station’s aircraft fleet, it had also featured offices, workrooms, and maintenance facilities.

The subsequently abandoned structure, having fallen into a state of disrepair with rotting wood and cracked windows, had been resurrected by Dr. and Mrs. Joseph E. Salvatore in 1997, who had formed the not-for-profit Naval Air Station Wildwood Foundation to save and preserve it as a memorial to the 42 pilots who had lost their lives during their training here between 1943 and 1945, and had subsequently been listed on the New Jersey and National Register of Historic Places at the National Significance Level.  That hangar now houses the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum, which features some 30 aircraft, engines, interactive exhibits provided by the Franklin Institute of Philadelphia, films, a library, and a gift shop.

The hangar, commissioned by the Navy in April of 1943 and one of the few remaining World War II all-wooden structures, is breathtaking in size and magnitude and represents the conversion of resources created by nature for use by man.

Propeller-driven aircraft are represented by the Vultee BT-13 trainer, the OE-2 “Bird Dog,” the Boeing-Stearman PT-17 Kaydet, the North American T-28C Trojan, and the Grumman TBM-3E Avenger, one of only eight designs listed on the National Register of Historic Places, while pure-jet fighters include the McDonnell-Douglas A-4 Skyhawk, the Lockheed T-33 Shooting Star, the Grumman F-14B Tomcat, and a MiG-15.  Rotary wing aircraft encompass the UH-1 “Huey,” the AH-1F Cobra, the Hughes OH-6A “Cayuse,” the Bell OH-13C “Sioux,” and the Sikorsky HH-52 “Seaguard,” while both fixed and rotary wing engines include an Allison J-33, a Pratt and Whitney R-2800 Double Wasp, a Wright Cyclone R-1820, a Pratt and Whitney R-4360 Wasp Major, a T53, and even a 98,000 thrust-pound Pratt and Whitney PW4098, which powers the mammoth Boeing 777.

Aside from the aircraft and engines themselves, the Naval Air Station Wildwood Aviation Museum often hosts fly-ins, veterans’ ceremonies, historical lectures, and school field trips.

The 1,000-acre Cape May Airport, the museum’s location, is itself of historic value, having evolved from the naval air station.  Sporting two 4,998-foot runways (1-19 and 10-28), six taxiways, and three parking ramps, the general aviation facility annually fields 39,000 movements primarily comprised of corporate, recreational, and charter aircraft, and stands as a testament to the location where fields, once cultivating corn, had later cultivated pilots whose dive-bombing skills had been instrumental in Pacific theatre and ultimate World War II victory.

Pierre Blanchard’s hot air balloon ascent in 1793 had sparked a long line of aviation accomplishments in New Jersey, a path which can be retraced today by visiting its significant airfields and museums from Teterboro Airport in the north to Naval Air Station Wildwood in the south.

Crate Training Dogs

crate training dogs
Where's the best room to keep a crate-trained dog? Should two crate-trained dogs be kept in the same room?

I just rescued a crate-trained, fixed, nine month old, female Puggle. My roomate has a 2 year old, not-fixed, female Chiuaua that is also crate-trained. Should I keep their crates in the living room together or should I keep my dog in my room? I don't necessarily have a problem with her not being in a crate, but she loves it, and goes in of her own accord. Also, it wouldn't really be fair to my roomate's dog. I don't know what to do... any suggestions?

Crate training is one of the kindest things a person can do for their dogs..any dog. Simply put, dogs are den animals, they And it doesn't surprise me that your dog loves it. Location of the crate is really personal. I use an upstairs room that has lots of light, and a window, so that if I have company that is afraid of my dog * a golden retriever, lol * or someone that just doesn't like animals that much, the dogs are out of the way, and don't feel too left out.
What location works best for you? I would think two dogs in crates in the same room, might get them "speaking to eachother " very loudly . I think if I were you the crate would be in my room... as long as she has access to it when she wants.

Puppy Training Tips

The big joy a puppy brings around the house may fade a little if you realize you’ve got to waste a lot of time cleaning after it. Therefore, start training the dog from day one; here are some puppy training tips you may find useful at the beginnings of a relationship with your new friend. Puppy training tips are a book subject and they are thoroughly covered by professional sites such as Dog Training Expert where you can find the first steps of teaching new things to your puppy. General puppy training tips apply to all breeds so don’t worry about this aspect, the only problem is that some dogs are more difficult to potty train than others.

The first puppy training tip is not to allow it to eliminate everywhere; you don’t need such kind of accidents when the dog becomes an adult. Yet, mention should be made that no puppy training tips are going to turn the pup into a reliable dog until it is at least six month old. Training only creates a good habit that requires constant reinforcement. There should be permanent access to the potty area. The puppy training tip here is to never allow your dog to eliminate on carpets, tiles or hardwood.

Then the next very important puppy training tip is to teach it how to love and respect you, and this has very much to do with learning self control. Just like with small children, puppy training tips insists that you don’t give in to every whim of your puppy; you are the leader and you set the rules. Up to a certain point, there is dominance, only then, we’re talking about respect and friendship. Beware, by respect we mean love and attention combined with discipline. Puppy training tips are not for bullying and terrorizing your pet.

Probably the top puppy training tip of all is to make your dog as sociable as possible. Dogs that develop fear are likely to show outward signs of aggression too, and this should be avoided at all costs. You can socialize the animal by inviting people to meet the pup. The puppy training tip is that the pet get friendly and accustomed to having strangers around the house. Seeing that guests are no threat to you and the house environment, lies at the basis of this puppy training tip. Keep it in mind and you won’t see your dog attacking anyone!

Training You Dog

training you dog
Poll: dog trainers how long have you been training dogs n how old are you?

why do you train dogs
what it like working with dogs
would you recommend your job to someone interested in dogs?
how many trainers on here get paid enough to train dogs full time without doing another job?

N this is for qualified dog trainers not people who just train their own dogs

I have been training working dogs for almost 30 years..29 and change to be exact. I am old enough to know better!!!!
I train dogs because I love taking an animal that has great potential and turning it into something that will serve humankind.
I also love the action of bite work and I love competing.

Working with dogs can be very rewarding, if you have the right dogs to start out with. I could not train civilian dogs for example because I do not have the temperament to deal with marginal dogs on a regular basis.
My job can be fun if you are dedicated, competitive and always want to produce something better then the last dog you trained.
I do not know any dog trainers here in the USA that are STRICTLY training dogs and making enough to live on.
Everyone I know that trains also breeds or sells or imports dogs or does something that is dog related..working a detection dog or a patrol dog somewhere.
Hope I helped!

Home Dog Obedience Training Using the Positive Reinforcement Method

Most dog trainers believe that the best way to train any dog is using a method called positive reinforcement training. For those who are doing home dog obedience training this process simply entails using positive reinforcement for good behavior and ignoring bad behavior.

A dog's natural instinct is to please her owner. Positive reinforcement uses this instinct and allows your dog to learn what it is you want her to do. This type of training has more meaning to your dog because she is able to learn what you want her to do using her own mental capacity.

Here are some quick tips you can use to implement this training method at home:

1. Pick good rewards. You need to keep your dog's interest level up in what you are doing. A pat on the head or saying "good girl" will lose a dogs interest pretty quickly. Use tempting rewards such as food treats and physical affection to reinforce your dog's good behavior. Dog trainers call these primary incentives and dogs are very responsive to these.

2. Timing is important. Good behavior and obedience needs to be rewarded the moment it happens. This way your dog begins to understand what behavior is being rewarded. This is where clicker training can be used. Using a small metal device that emits a click when pushed you click the clicker the moment your dog follows a command successfully. To reinforce the meaning of the clicker a treat should also be offered.

3. Use the same commands consistently. If you want your dog to sit don't use "sit" one time, "sit down" the next, or "down" later on. This is confusing for a dog because they learn through repetition. Pick a command and stick with it for each behavior you desire.

If you are training your dog at home you will need to learn to reward your dog in a meaningful fashion. If you know what your dog likes as far as physical attention and treats you will know what works as far as rewards go. Some dogs prefer edible treats while others enjoy playing with a favorite toy.

If you are using food treats for your home dog training reinforcement you need to be aware that many dog trainers have found that dogs actually respond better if they receive treats in a more sporadic fashion. Apparently it keeps their attention better because they remain interested in what you are teaching them if rewards are given intermittently.

Positive reinforcement training is a great home dog obedience training process to use because it is relatively easy. Ignoring bad behavior is the cornerstone of this method because a dog being ignored is an unhappy dog. This can do more to motivate your dog to do what you ask more then just about anything else.

Electronic Dog Collar Training

[simpleaffiliate source="chitika" results="0"][/simpleaffiliate]

Appropriate age to use an electronic collar?

I am looking for an appropriate age to use and electronic collar on a dog, specifically a Dalmation. It is going to be used only for last resort training/correction. No PETA answeres, only FACT based information please. No PETA statement is ever based on facts, so please, only those who actually know what they are talking about. Most specific use is to prevent the dog from running out of the back yard and getting ran over. Better to be shocked than flattened!
Common sense would suggest that maybe I am not in a position to put up fences. Dogs get off of tie outs. Electric fences will not stop a beagle or dalmation. They are too wired to hunt. Another prime example is last night, the beagle got ahold of the cat for no good reason. I can smack her with whatever is close or use a shock collar to correct the problem immediately. So far, the pup is ok with other animals, but I would prefere to be able to stop something like that immediately.

Whats a PETA answer? They don't exist here.

How do I leash train my dog?

We live in a rural area and in a small town. Oliver is usually the only dog in public unless we go to a dog park. Oliver is good at stopping and going, being around people and cars, but when there is another animal on a leash, he makes a ruckus until they get to sniff butts and do the doggie dance.

I want to take Oliver on a trip with me to Seattle, but I need him to behave on a leash. Either that to he is riding in my purse, but I think he would be happier walking.

First thing to keep in mind-this is YOUR walk...he just gets to go. What that means to him is you make the decisions regarding where, when, how...what it means to you is you decide when to stop, when to go, which direction you will travel, when he gets to sniff, etc.

Start walking when he is focused on you-if he is distracted it will be much harder for him to learn the correct position. Move forward ONLY when he is beside or behind, and the lease has some slack (hold the leash at a place where the is just a few extra inches between your hand and his collar). If he starts to move ahead or is taking up the slack-STOP!! Immediately...do not walk while he is doing this-every step is like a treat...think of how many he could get in just 5 feet. Replace him in the proper position and give him some slack in the leash-if he takes it, put him back in the proper position and give him some slack in the leash-if he takes it, put him back in the proper position and give him some slack in the leash-you get the point! Until he is staying in place, do not walk. When he finally gets the idea, reward him with forward motion. As he gets better, reward with praise and/or treats for longer distances with him in the correct position.

This is an extremely tedious and patience testing technique with most dogs. Think of it this way, would you rather spend 1-2 weeks not getting anywhere, or the next 10+ years getting dragged by your dog? It seems your is small-so not as much dragging, however the lack of respect pulling you shows is setting a precedent for all other behaviors.

BTW-thank you for asking this. I have been meaning to write up an article for my website, and you just motivated me to do it! LOL

Dog Training Tips for Training Your Dog

The Alpha Myth - Do Dogs Really Think We Are Dogs?

A new Understanding and Training Method.

The last time I looked, I definitely did not have anal glands, fur, mobile ears, a tail, four legs or a nose than can detect smells 100,000 times better than any humans. I don't really smell like a dog or even look like one. Though I am sure there are people who know me, that may just question the last two statements.

Click for Dog Obedience Training to Solve Dog Behavior Problems

What I am saying is that my dogs know I am not a dog. It does not matter how many times I eat before them, or how many times I come in and ignore them, I still cannot convince them that I am a dog.

Lets look at it another way, if we managed to convince a dog that we are a dog, then all the dogs that are aggressive to other dogs would be aggressive to us. Which is clearly not the case.

In simple terms I cannot be the Alpha. Dogs are conspecific that means they can only truly pack up with their own kind. Unlike birds, dogs do not bond and lock onto the first thing they see when they are born. Therefore dogs know when they meet other dogs that they are dogs and when he meets humans he sees them as a different species.

Even if I dressed up as Scooby-Doo and ran around barking and peeing up the walls, I would not convince even the most naïve of pooches. They would easily seeing through my cunning disguise and know that I am not a dog. I would also imagine my family and clients would not be overly impressed

Why? Even in our most fevered imaginations can we believe that gesture eating, ignoring them when coming back in, or going through doorways first will be the magical formula to convince them that we are an Alpha dog, and therefore leader of the pack.

It is my humble opinion that rank reduction programs, where we are told to act like an Alpha does not work in changing behaviour over the long-term. In the short term you will see some changes in behavioural patterns, but long term then will be very little change or benefit. In reality quite the opposite can happen. By ignoring and isolating your dog for long periods you can cause confusion, distress, anxiety, and distrust, which can detrimentally affect the bond and trust you have with each other.

Do wolves ignore each other or stand in line?

Have you ever see Wolves, Dingoes, Coyotes, or Wild Dogs ignoring their pack members when they return from a hunt or a foray? In reality they have an intricate and stylized greeting ritual, which does not include sending each other to Coventry. They may shun a badly behaved pack member, but that is only temporarily and never when greeting after an absence. I use this shunning method later in this article as the "naughty step"

Do you ever see wild dogs or wolves lining up in rank order to eat? Just imagine all the timber wolves in an nice orderly queue with numbers on their backs. The Alpha male bellowing, " come in number four it's your turn to eat, now what would you prefer Antelope or Buffalo?"

That's more like a Gary Larsen farside cartoon than the reality of what happens in wolf or wild canid packs. They all just get stuck in and grab whatever they can. It may involve some snarling and ritualized aggression; however this is generally from the middle to lower end of the pack.

The problem with the people who advocate the Alpha and rank reduction route, is either they do not understand or they choose to ignore the fact that behavioural problems in dogs often has wide and differing backgrounds. Pack dynamics only involves approximately 15% of the cases that I have to treat.

These proponents of rank reduction would have us believe that pack dynamics is the answer to each and every behavioural abnormality, they are sadly and frighteningly wrong. If only it were that simple.

Resource Controller

Though I clearly cannot be an Alpha ( after all I am not a dog), I can be a controller of resources and a leader of sorts. I can change the behaviour of my dogs from unacceptable to acceptable. I can also initiate programs of change using psychology and sometimes just simple basic obedience training. My actions, and how I relate and communicate with my pets is the basis of how I work and why I get the level of success with my clients.

To be a controller you need to convince your dog that mutual respect is required, that includes your body space. I may not want to be leapt on every time I come in. Greeting is fine as long as it does not include jumping all over me or my friends, which is considered rude and inappropriate in wild dogs and wolves.

I believe we should strive more for democracy than outright autocracy, or the opposite which is totally ignoring the bad behaviour and only praising the good, which appears to be the misguided belief of the so called positive reinforcement trainers. I use operant conditioning methods. And if these trainers understood "operant conditioning" they would know there are four parts to it. Not just positive reinforcement in isolation.

How can any animal, including humans differentiate between right or wrong, if they are not shown or told?

Most good trainers and behaviourists are aware that there is not just one Alpha male and female in the pack. Scientists and biologists no longer use the term Alpha they tend to use the word "breeders" to describe the leaders of the pack. These breeders can constitute any number of males and females in each group or pack.

The breeders are the only ones that actually breed. The other females do not come into heat and the males do not cock their legs, unless of course they become a breeder at some stage. This is a form of hormonal neutering far more effective than anything that humans can come up with.

How do I become a controller?

What we must first ascertain is what is an important resource to your dog. In many cases food is extremely high on the agenda, especially very tasty treats. But not always. A resource can also include toys, games, access, and anything else you dog may consider important.

I tend to start with food and use either sausage or mild cheddar cheese, because they tend not to create crumbs. Which tends to distract the dog's attention at a time when you need it to be concentrating on you.

I use a training aid called "The Jingler" which helps with many training and behavioural problems, including walking to heel, jumping up, recall, sit stay, mutual respect, some types of aggression and even car and bike chasing. Even more importantly it sets your position as a resource controller.

What these techniques actually do is to realign in the mind of your dog that you control vital resources. you are actually saying is this is my bone/treat, I am prepared to share it but only when I give you permission". You are actually training control initially, of one of the greatest resources of all FOOD.

Once you have completed these exercises you have set into your dogs mind that you are a resource controller, then all other training will become much easier. The dog will come to respect your body space and not abuse or invade it without being invited. You can then start working on the lead work, recall and many others behaviours you wish to work on.

Attention on Demand

The second part of being a controller is to control attention on demand. Many of the behavioural issues I see involving what the owner believes is dominance is in reality a form of attention seeking. Barking, growling, jumping, destruction of objects, (especially in you presence) some toileting problems and object stealing may be forms of attention seeking behaviour.

Now we are going to effectively mimic the naughty step type of behaviour training used in rearing children, except with a dog you have to effectively isolate them when bad behaviour occurs. It is important to understand that social isolation should only ever be for very short periods. And remember this is nothing to do with ignoring when you come it is about non-reward for bad behaviour.

Keep the dog on a short house lead preferably 3ft long made of nylon. I would only use this size and material for use as a house lead, not to walk to heel. I use my own leads which are manufactured for me and made of an incredible material called cushion web for use outside.

If the dog is misbehaving such as barking nipping, biting or other behavioural problems, simply pick up the lead with no command or visual acknowledgment and take the dog to another room (a downstairs toilet is ideal). Place the dog in the room and shut the door trapping the lead in the door so the dog cannot move too far away from the door.

Leave for two minutes (unless still barking) then go and let him out, If he continues with the behaviour he was displaying before, repeat the exercise until the behaviour stops. It will not take too long for the dog to realise that it is getting non reward for its behaviour and gradually the problems will subside. Praise for good behaviour but do not ignore bad behaviour act on it and be consistent and fair in all your training.

Obedience Training Resolves Bad Dog Behavior in Most Cases

There is nothing worse then a dog that jumps on anyone who walks in the front door, barks all day long, doesn't listen to your commands, or relieves himself in your house. These are just a few examples of the sorts of bad dog behavior that drives owners crazy. If you are having these types of behavioral problems with you dog then it might be time to try some basic obedience training.

Dogs are very social creatures and they love attention, even if it's for doing the wrong thing. Dog obedience training is the best way to re-program the way your dog goes about seeking attention because it them a positive outlet to please you. It also teaches them the difference between good and bad behavior because once they understand what you want from them they will always work to earn your praise.

There are two ways to approach training your dog to correct bad behavior; you can do it your self or you can sign up for a dog training class. If you are having a particularly hard time with your dog's behavior then a class run by a professional trainer may be your best bet. Not only do you get their years of experience working with just about every kind of behavioral problem you also get a chance to find out exactly how to best deal with your dog's problems. Dog obedience classes also give you the opportunity to socialize your dog with other dogs, which is a big part of solving many of his behavior issues.

If you don't wish to train your dog in a class setting then you can still use the services of a professional trainer. Many trainers will provide private lessons, either at their place of business or at your home. Again you will get their experience working with all sorts of dogs but it will be more cost prohibitive.

If you would rather train your misbehaving dog yourself there are plenty of resources available to help you. Your local pet or book store will have plenty of books on the subject, some even specific to your particular breed. This can be important because not all breeds respond as well to the same training methods. Getting a better understanding of the intelligence level, mood, and temperament of your dog can give you insight into why he might be misbehaving.

There are also good training methods available on the internet. Most of these are downloadable ebooks written by professional dog trainers. They cover a wide variety of bad behavior problems and give you the insight of a pro without having to pay to see one in person. One of the nice things about going this route is the ability to email the trainers with questions and problems you may be having. This personal touch makes the low cost of these products a good way to go.

Bad dog behavior in the majority of cases is simply a case of a lack of proper obedience training. No matter which training option you choose your chances of turning your misbehaving dog into a model doggy citizen are greatly increased if you take the time to train him properly.

Dog Training Equipment

DIY Dog Agility equipment?

i want to make my own dog agility training equipment
so i can make it custom and a its a fun weekend fun project :)
were can i find i site were i can make these at home?
dog walk, collapsed tunnel, A-Frame, Tire Jump, AND I NEED A site were i can train my dog to use this equipment

First, the best resource out there for making your own agility equipment is "Do it yourself agility equipment" by Jim Hutchins. I have that book and it's great. Blueprints, several options (like a aluminum vs. plywood vs. composite A-frame). He covers all agility equipment except for a couple of the UKC obstacles.

Second, get some PVC and a PVC cutter. With that you can make all of your jumps, most of a pause table, the base for a teeter, frames for a tire, frames to hold the chute.

Third, in terms of actually how to use the equipment, my first and best advice is to take an agility class. Here's why: without a good instructor you're likely to learn a lot of bad habits. Habits which turn dogs off to particular equipment (like the teeter or A-frame or dog walk or chute or even the tunnel). Besides, learning how to use the equipment is the easy part. And for most dogs, doing the obstacles isn't really that fun--it's the combination of doing a full course and taking your instructions at speed. The real test to agility isn't doing obstacles it's working as a team. And just doing obstacles won't give that for you.

There really aren't any free websites that will teach you how to do agility. Steve Schwarz' website (agilitynerd) is the single best resource out there for learning agility but it assumes at least a basic knowledge. Otherwise, he talks about the merits of a front-cross vs. a rear cross vs. a blind cross or pushing the line as a particular handling manuever and a novice would be "huh?!?" Helix Fairweather has a cyber agility course but you have to pay money to sign up for it. The two best intro agility books I can think of are by Laurie Leach and Margaret Bonham (available through Borders, Am.azon)

Dog Obedience Class

The Significance of Dog's Obedience Classes

Dogs are unquestionably good and are also reliable companions; because of this, they are identified as "man's best friend." On the other hand, we can't take the certainty that our pets can also be our best enemies because of their bad behaviors like biting, destructive chewing, digging, begging, excessive barking, threatening aggression, and also their inappropriate peeing and defecation which can often really annoy us and cause us to hate our dogs. Because of this, most of us prefer to enroll our dog or puppy in dog obedience classes (when they get their new dog or puppy) to make sure that their pet will become an obedient dog which is often what a lot of us dog owners are looking for.

A dog obedience class helps us by way of educating our dogs or puppies to be able to act pleasantly in varying cases which our dogs or puppies might encounter. Dog experts educate our pets on how to react appropriately to exact or properly-delivered orders which actually means that your pet already has ideal characteristics and is now well-trained. Dog experts will also educate your dog or puppy on common dog orders such as sit, stay, heel, drop, and also orders which could entertain you and your family just like dance, hop, roll, and more. In dog behavior training, pets are also taught to walk properly on a leash while making sure that at the time you and your pet will go out to the park just to have a walk, your pet won't pull you down the road ever again; instead, your dog or puppy will probably walk close to you calmly and even take a seat close to you once you stop walking.

Pet obedience training is the best program to change your dog's bad characteristics which you go through with your dog every day. It's very beneficial for avoiding household problems because with this you'll be able to assure yourself that your house is safe for you and your family, especially for your sons and daughters. Not only this, though, because dog or puppy obedience training also helps you so that you can build a formidable bond together with your dog or puppy. Because there are several programs, when it comes to dog obedience class, there are also times when they need to have the pet owners' participation, so both you and your pet are going to do several exciting exercises and teamwork. For this reason the both of you will frequently interact and, as a dog owner, you are going to learn how to understand your dog or puppy better.

Dog or puppy training classes do not really solve your whole pet's manner problems, yet, this is an excellent solution to solve a number of these problems and it is an easy way to create good communication and a strong bond between both you and your dog or puppy. This isn't simply beneficial for your dog or puppy, it is also for you, mainly because through this training you will know more about your dog's world and you can be one of many proud pet owners.

How To Potty Train Your Dog - Word Association Method

It is important to potty train your dog for not giving way to their nature’s call anywhere and anytime. Otherwise it will cause you a lot of embarrassment and trouble. Are there any effective ways on how to potty train your dog?

You may think that it is difficult to train puppies and older dogs to take your command to go to the bathroom. Most dogs can pay attention to repeated words, and they are able to associate the words to what you want them to do. For example, if you continue to say "go potty" when your dog is out there relieving itself, it will remember your word.

The best method on how to potty train your dog is by word association. You can make your dog associates the command "go potty" with relieving itself if you do this repeatedly over a period of time. If your dog relieves inside the house, you can say, "No, go outside," then bring your dog outdoors. Over a while, your dog will associate this command with something they should not do inside the house but outside.

In most guidebooks on "how to potty train your dog", it will never mention that you need to spank your dog while you’re doing word association training. Through repeated word command, your dog will link the word ‘no’ with bad conduct, and it will learn to go outside the house.

One important thing you must do is to bring your dog outside the house and tell your dog to go potty. You have to leave it outside the house until it has done with its business. Continue with this instruction to "go potty" until your dog finally does. You should credit your dog by praising it with a little treat for doing a great job. The dog will associate this command with what you want it to do so it can get a treat. After a while, your dog will learn that ‘go potty’ outside the house will make you happy.

You should pick a specific location for your dog to relieve itself as the dog will also associate this location with the command of "go potty". Be very precise and clear on your command when you train your dog on word association. Always be consistent. Do not use different command phrases to mean the same thing as your dog will not understand this and will become confused.

Cat Psychology

The Benefits of Owning Cats

Without a doubt, pets are very popular among first-world countries today. In many western countries, cats are actually the most-owned pet, even more than dogs, fish, or birds. Cats are affectionate but less demanding than dogs, don't have to be exercised daily, can use litter-boxes instead of having to be let outside. Many folks feel that felines have a certain "aura" of cleverness and mystique.

But can cats actually have a beneficial effect on a person's health? Research shows that having a pet cat can affect a person's emotions and psychology in a positive way. Quite a few people that have depression, stress, or old age can find comfort in stroking a happy, purring cat in their lap. Cats can be great friends and companions.

Cats can boost confidence. Taking care of a pet can teach a child to be caring and responsible. When ill or old people have a pet cat that depends on them, it keeps them from feeling useless and helps boost self-esteem and confidence in themselves. By taking care of a pet, you can learn to take care of others too, and help them when they're in need.

Pets can be a source of stress-relief too. The Society for Companion Animal Studies has reported that patients often recover from their illnesses or live longer lives if they are an animal's caretaker, or through their companionship. It has been discovered that those with mental illnesses, or physiological or psychological impairment do better when accompanied by a pet.

If you're hesitant or shy in public, bringing a cat along can help spark conversation and introduce you to new friends. Lots of other people love cats and in a small crowd, you're sure to find someone else who shares your interest in cats and other pets. Keep in mind that some people are allergic to different kinds of animals, especially those with fur. Make sure it's okay to take your pet when you're invited to a social gathering.

Cats have wide ranges of personalities, much like people. Adventurous, playful, clever, mischievous, maybe even nifty. Some cats are content to sit on your lap, others have two speeds--high and sleeping. Kittens and young cats tend to be more energetic and get less so while they mature. But they always seem to keep their dignity and attraction. There are many different breeds of cats with different appearances, sizes and attitudes. Some cats are bred for beauty, some are rescued from off the street. Maybe you'll adopt a rescued cat one day.

Even if you don't adopt a cat, many other animals make great pets. Dogs, fish, and birds have their own attractions and places in your life they can fill. Some people find others interesting, reptiles, amphibians, hamsters, gerbils, or snakes. Horses have a "club" all their own. Beware more exotic pets though--zoo animals can make very poor pets, many cities have ordinances against them, and it usually takes very special care to keep one. Zoo keepers have lots of work to do and the organizations they work for spend lots of money to keep exotic animals healthy.

Whether for comfort or companionship, business or hobby, pets brighten millions of people's homes and lives. Will they brighten yours?

Three Questions On Selecting A Dog Training Collar And Dog
Behavior

Judy wrote to me with the following question:

"Hi, Adam! I enjoyed your website, but still need help choosing
the right collar for my hard headed Jack Russell. She does go
swimming to chase and catch my ducks in our pond, she chases
cars, and she sometimes sneaks up behind visitors and bites them
on the leg. She does not listen at all when she is so intensely
concentrating on doing what she is not supposed to do...ignores
us completely. Other than being so aggravating 1/4 of the time,
she is a good little dog. But, when she is bad...she is BAD!

What collar would be best for such a small dog...she is not a
fat Jack Russell...she runs to much for that. She is probably
around 12 - 15 pounds, but I am just guessing. I want a collar
that goes at least 1/2 mile. We live out in the country and she
runs around our 10 acres.

Thanks so much, - Judy"

Dear Judy,

When choosing a training collar, the pinch collar is the best
choice. It communicates with the dog in it's natural language,
using the "teeth" of the collar similar to how an Alpha dog
would correct a subordinate or a mother dog correct her puppies.
The small size would probably work best for your Jack Russell
terrier.

By not listening to you, she is showing her disrespect of your
Alpha position in the family "pack." When you get the pinch
collar, you must keep it and a leash on her all the time when
supervision is available so you can correct any behaviors you
don't want. A good place to start learning about how to train
yourself on how to train your dog is my book and videos.

By keeping up a regimen of tough love and obedience, you can
correct her negative behaviors and don't forget to praise her
whenever she does something right. Mental stimulation is as
important as physical and she will be glad to be working for you
in obedience.

Jason wrote to me with a similar question about training collars:

"Hello Adam- I have recently purchased the full package of your
book and DVD's that you offer which I have found to be very
useful. I have two questions that I hope you may be able to
answer:

1) How old must a dog be before training with the pinch collar?

I have a 4 month old chocolate lab that is very intelligent.
Prior to your instructions, I was already able to teach her to
shake, sit, and roll-over all with food as the reward.

However, down is a different story-she only goes down when I
point all the way to the ground-finger pointing and touching the
floor-since having food in my hand when the training began she
only responds to my hand as a signal and not the word. This is
at best inconsistent and a bit frustrating. I have begun the
down-stay but the spike collar I have is only using 3 rings and
does not seem very efficient. I feel compelled to break this bad
habit which I have helped create, and look for your suggestions
on this topic.

2) How do I use a ball drive (which is extremely strong in my
lab) to make my dog not only retrieve (which she does) but catch
a Frisbee in the air?

I have already started bouncing balls of the wall and she is
getting better at catching the ball on the run, but I don't know
how this can evolve into a Frisbee catch and was a bit shocked
not finding this in your book.

Thank you for anything you can do or suggest for me to do,

-- Jason"

Dear Jason,

To be at it's best efficiency, the pinch collar should have at
least 5 links with pronged tips. You might want to find the next
size down for your dog and remove links until you have the
proper fit. Remember that the pinch collar is recommended for
the dog usually when she gets her adult teeth (usually around 4
to 4.5 months). If you do need to use it before then, be gentle
with your corrections, as training at this age is usually done
through positive reinforcement, motivation, and light
corrections (vocal, not giving a treat, etc).

Make sure she knows the command "Down" as well as the hand
signal. If you have to start from square one in teaching it to
her, do it. Praise her when she does anything right and let her
know when she needs to give you a little more effort.

Instead of using a ball for teaching her how to catch a Frisbee,
use a Frisbee; the two toys are very different in dimension.
Make sure she's excited about the Frisbee and gently throw it to
her from a few feet away, aiming for her chest, and tell her
"Catch!" If she even attempts, praise her. Keep trying and use
the word "Catch" whenever you throw it and as she learns to
catch it, throw it from farther away and have her run short
distances. However, be careful of how hard you exercise her, as
her joints are still growing. At a future point, you will know
when you can stop using the word "Catch" and simply ask her if
she wants to play Frisbee.

Whereas Marie wanted to know how to incorporate the use of the
training collar into fixing her dog's problem of ankle biting:

"Dear Adam: I have a five month-old Maltese and I'm having a
problem with him nipping at my ankles and pulling on my pant
legs. Also could I use a pinch collar on him? He only weighs
4lbs. Thanks for any help you can give me.

Regards, Marie"

Dear Marie,

By biting your ankles and pulling your pant legs, he is asking
for attention. I find it hard to think that he is trying to
dominate you at this age, so the behavior is probably more
related to attention. You need to eliminate this behavior verbal
correction IN CONJUNCTION WITH grabbing the scruff of his neck
and giving a firm pull.

If it's easier, use a prong collar on because the collar only
pinches the skin instead of constricting against the neck. While
they are very hard to find in conventional pet stores, they are
available online and can be found by typing "micro prong collar"
into a search engine. It will help you communicate with your dog
in a way he understands. However, it's unlikely

Dog Training and Your Relationship With Your Dog

My best friend is incredible! He's one of those rare types who hangs on every word you say. He's content to be quiet when I need stillness, even though he's one of those high-drive types. All I have to do is call and he's there in an instant, no matter what he was doing before. He puts me ahead of all her other friends, never fails to make me feel special, and is a redhead just like me. But he's not a person, even though he's sure he is. He is a butterfly dog; a Papillon.

When I brought this eight-week-old bundle of joy home, I didn't know what to call her. I'm not very good at naming anything, so I usually just observe for a couple of weeks and let the animal name itself by its personality. This puppy's name became evident in nothing flat: Tazzie. He whirled around the house, jumping up on furniture five times her size, zooming and zipping and totally charming me. He was, indeed, a Tasmanian devil pup. I quickly realized the athleticism of this dog and knew I'd have to find her a "job" when he got a little older. High-drive dogs, that don't have "jobs," will certainly find other outlets for their energy and those outlets aren't usually things you would enjoy!

You already have a burning love for your puppy, but what is your relationship like? Does it come when you call it? Does it sit or lay or stay? From your first class, at your dog training school, your relationship with your dog begins to change. I will warn you, however, that anything you want to teach your dog won't come just with a once-a-week class, even if you have the best dog training school in the world. You have to practice with them, just a little bit, every day.

Tazzie was a very food-motivated dog, so the fact that he got food every time he did something right made training a blast for her, all by itself. And this happened every day! Bonus! He made fast friends at her new dog training school, so going to class was fun as well. He got to where he would whine, as soon as we pulled in the parking lot, until I finally got her out of that car.

So now you're taking your dog to classes in a place they love, and you're working with them every day. During that time, you're paying complete attention to them, teaching them to pay complete attention to you, and they get their favorite food as icing on the cake. This does incredible things for the bond between you and your dog. They learn to focus on you, no matter what, and good things will come. They get praised and fed, or praised and allowed to tug on a toy, whichever motivates the dog more, so your relationship can't help but blossom.

Ever since Tazzie and I started training together, he has claimed me as her own. When my other two dogs want to sit on my lap, he'll push them out of the way to get the best spot because, I am her property, as far as he's concerned. I do give the other dogs personal time as well, but I have to put her in a sit/stay or a down/stay so he'll let them come get love.

He is, by far, the one I can trust the most, not only because of her training, but from the bond we gained through the training. He never takes her eyes off of me, since we began at our dog training school, and it serves us well in the agility ring!

If you want to forever alter and solidify the bond you share with your dog, find yourself a good dog training school, for whatever discipline you prefer, and go for it. With a little time, money, and patience, your relationship will become a forever relationship. If you do, your dog will turn out to be your best friend too!
